Brought home the DLINK DIR-685 last night. At first all seemed to go well. Initial configuration was a breeze. Was able to quickly connect several PCs, NAS & VOIP devices. Right away I noticed that two wireless PCs were dropping their connections intermittently. Speed goes up and down considerably without moving wireless devices and with little activity on the network.NAS performance is a disappointment. Even with a wired eth connection from the NAS to the router AND to the PC, the NAS drive was completely unusable (15+ seconds for a clicked folder to open only to have the NAS stop responding completely ... video streams freezing and dying). After poking around on support pages, I updated the router's firmware, which improved the NAS performance to mediocre. The same NAS performed better on my old Lynksys WRT54GS.Using the print server is cumbersome. Was hoping to be able to drop print jobs from multiple PCs into a queue without having to fiddle around with another program.I was planning on adding a 2.5" 1TB SATA drive to the router, but other reviewers' comments about the noisy fan leave me hesitant to do so. 2.5" drives are more expensive per GB, so if performance is not considerably better than a 3.5" USB or eth connected drive, the SATA port may not be much of a benefit.I upgraded primarily to stream video and music from the NAS and now I feel like I may have wasted $200. If my impression doesn't improve in a few days, the router is going back.EDIT:After 5 days a problem surfaced with the DHCP server that prevents several devices (previously assigned static IP addresses) from connecting to the network.

EDITED 07/23/09: After using the router all day, I have noticed that the wireless connection speed to my laptop is not consistent like the router I was using prior to this one. The speed constantly changes and has gone from 54mbs to 11mbs repeatedly. The previous router did not do that. Perhaps it is a positioning problem, but this takes the router down one star. I cannot change the star rating on the review, but I consider this a 3-star router now.The D-Link DIR-685 is an excellent router that is extremely easy to set up for a novice, yet has enough advanced features to satisfy all but the most demanding experts. The basic setup on this router took me no more than 10 minutes, including cloning my MAC address and handshaking with my modem. It worked quickly and easily right out of the box and I was impressed with the ease of setup. I have had other routers with a much more cumbersome setup that would confuse a novice. This router should not cause any problems for anyone. There is a helpful "hints" section on the right side of the setup screen that will help with many questions. The display on the router is sharp and easy to read and you can view settings and status on the device itself. The FrameChannel feature is pretty neat, as you can set it up to display things such as local weather, news, pictures, etc. as separate frame channels. This is a really cool feature, as my router is now displaying local weather forecasts, news headlines, weather alerts, and pictures. You can set it up to connect with friends to share photos as well. I can see this being a feature that many people like.Installing a hard drive in the unit was absolutely painless. You take the drive, insert it into the slot, press down, and you are done. This can be done with the unit powered on or off. When the drive is inserted you will be prompted to format it. Install the software and you're off. Excellent. For advanced applications, the router has the following features:1. Ability to set up 25 port forwarding rules.2. Ability to set up 25 application rules, including individual firewall rules.3. QoS setup to improve VOIP or streaming traffic.4. MAC filtering for up to 25 clients.5. Parental control rules to block or allow only specific sites.6. Ability to set up 50 individual firewall rules.7. DMZ setup for unrestricted access.8. Ability to set up 32 static IP routes.9. Guest zone setup for protected guest access.10. SharePort - allows you to share USB devices across your network. Printers, scanners, USB drives, etc. can be shared with anyone on the network!11. NAS (network attached storage) for storing files on an internal hard drive to share on the network.I can't say enough good things about this router so far, as it is a snap to set up and has a lot of very powerful features. This router is a sure-fire winner!Overall rating: 3/5 - see edit note above.

D-Link builds solid routers, this is no exception. It works well as a router with wireless-N for pretty decent download speeds. Setting up is becoming easier with every successive D-Link Router with included software. However, this router tries to give you too many bells and whistles in addition and ends up pricing itself out of the market. Why on earth would you want a router which has a photo frame and storage disc bay? Especially when it is $200 plus. You can get better versions all of these separately for less than $150.The LCD screen at 3.2" is too small to display pictures nicely, and I really want to hide away my router, not have it sticking out on the desk with ugly wires hanging from it! The storage bay is just a bay and you have to purchase the drive separately adding on to the cost. Right now, 500MB disk drives do not cost much and you can attach them to any router which allows you do do that. As a router its range is no better than some other much cheaper versions which come without the LCD screen or storage capability.Integrating a storage drive with a router is a good idea but I don't really see the value of a LCD frame when you know there are going to be ugly wires around it and you can't really put it on your dresser!

I have had this for 2 weeks and this was my 2nd router that does the same thing. The router will work great for about the first week then will stop assigning ip addresses. Even after I assign the ip for static router it will only stay up for day if I am lucky. I mostly use this with ethernet cables and 1wireless device. It fails as a router which why I bought it. I have now taken it back and ordered the asus Rt-56 from amazon. The asus works great without having to reset every day and some times every couple of hours like the dlink.

This is a pretty cool router - not only wireless connectivity but also with a hard drive (which is *not* included, please note!) that can be shared for storage and USB ports for sharing other devices. It also has the picture frame feature which is kind of a nice (if a bit odd) addition. But unfortunately, it's not exactly plug & play.I'm not an IT guy but I got my MBA with an emphasis in Information Systems and I've handled the IT needs for small companies I've worked for (outsourcing the tougher stuff), but all that's been a few years ago and I really haven't needed to keep up on technology much since then. So, while I'm not an expert I probably know just enough to get myself into trouble. I've installed other wireless home routers (D-Link DIR-825 Xtreme N Dual Band and Linksys WRT54G) and they were almost plug & play. Unfortunately, this one didn't go as smoothly. We have broadband access through our cable provider and it was difficult to get this router to work with it, but working through the setup process on the computer solved the initial connectivity problems. The picture frame is a nice extra feature, but the screen is so small that it seems almost pointless. The FrameChannel option makes good use of it, though, and you can subscribe to weather, news, comics, etc., as well as have your own photos cycling. The weather and photos were the only really worthwhile options to me, however, as the comics I selected ended up so small they couldn't be read and the news wasn't local (tons of options but nothing relevant to me). But at least it allows you to keep the router on top of the desk or otherwise out in the open, although it didn't have as good of range as we had before (we placed the other routers *under* the desk and still got much better range). My biggest complaint is with staying connected to the internet. We continually had problems both on the desktop computer connected directly to the router as well as connecting wirelessly with the laptop - and sometimes one would work and the other wouldn't. The internet would randomly drop off and later come back online, and the speed on the wireless connection was inconsistent - usually extremely fast but sometimes excruciatingly slow. I'm sure a much more savvy computer-person than myself could have figured out the problems but after my wife got angry I switched back to our D-Link DIR-825 router (only took 5 minutes after I found the right cords) and we haven't had a problem since. So, if you consider yourself an advanced user with this kind of equipment (or know someone who *really* is) this probably isn't a bad option. Otherwise, stick with something simpler.

VERY happy (now) with this purchase.I now recommend this product completely.Update: looks like I spoke too soon. Now, the replacement has started to fail. Cool concept, but built like crap. If you need a power line adapter, look elsewhere. I am not the only one to run into problems with this unit.

Unfortunately, not all of the blades are working. I think this is because I had to use this router as an access point. I have an AT&T 2wire modem/router, so this was the only option I had. It has been about three weeks since the rep at D-Link told me that the team who developed this router would contact me and see if we could resolve some of the issues. As of yet I have not heard from them. If I do, I will update this review. One of the issues is that I cannot connect to FrameChannel. The router tells me that the "network is unreachable". Another issue is that I cannot get the bit torrent client to work. It will load the necessary folders in the NAS drive but will not connect. I've tried port forwarding on this router, and also the 2wire modem/router but so far no luck. The problem might be mine, because this is the first time I have ever experimented with port forwarding. For me these are two minor issues. Now for the good news on this router. Setting it up as an access point was a piece of cake. The PDF and the addendum that comes with this router are excellent. After setting it up as an access point, I manually set up the wireless portion of the router and connect to some of my PCs. One of the computers I use is a Eee 10 inch, and if you have one you know there are no restrictions to where you can go in your house. ;-) The conductivity was excellent wherever I went. For me though, the biggest benefit of this router is having a NAS box (other reviewers have mentioned that the 2.5" SATA Hard Drive is NOT included). Again, using the addendum that came with the router, the setup for the NAS drive was easy. So now, I can share information with all my computers through the NAS drive. I also installed SharePoint just to make sure that it worked. And it does. I connected a portable external hard drive to the router.Though I am unable at the present time to use this router it as it was meant to be, it gave me the opportunity to have network storage for all my computers. That in itself is worth the price of the router. And as a bonus, I also have a picture frame. ;-) If the day comes when the 2wire modem/router quits, I will replace it with just a modem and be able to take full advantage of this router. I have to give this at least four stars for its ingenuity. If you were to buy the pieces separately in order to have what this router has, I think you would be above the asking price, or at least close to it.

This router is marketed as 5ghz capable and having the best throughput of draft-N routers on the market. I run an IT company and have more than a fair amount of experience with routers be they wired or wireless. These high-end home products do not in any way live up to what D-Link claims. Having purchased their DAP-1522 as well, I have been unsuccessful in streaming media between these two devices over 5ghz/N. The devices are 25ft apart and the dropouts make the device useless. D-Link's own tech support has spent hours attempting to prove to me that these devices will work together and a quick survey of the web will provide the facts: the 5ghz performance is abysmal and you are being charged a handsome premium while D-Link laughs it's way all the way to the bank. There should be a product recall and/or legal action on the behalf of consumers that were fooled by the marketing. I sadly am one of them and while I suppose caveat emptor needs to be our creed, it is saddening to be in an industry where a company this large refuses to take responsibility for false advertising.Wrote this up in their forums and asked others to comment and they blocked me...interesting:Sorry ovrdrvn, you are banned from using this forum!Legal threats are not welcome on our forums, it is clear that you have no needs presently that will be served by these forums and are just looking for an avenue to vent your frustrations. So I just set up my new router yesterday. We recently got fiber optic internet here locally and this router works AMAZING. In the past I've had Netgear, then a Linksys (which I absolutely hated), then another Netgear, and now a D-Link. I have two routers set up in my home because we have a detached 4 seasons room and one router wont cover that entire area. So I have the Netgear WNDR3300 on the main floor to cover part of that and the 4 seasons room and then the D-Link upstairs on the opposite side of the house. The Netgear is dual band but the N doesnt reach far at all. You can be quite a ways away and still get G but no N. With the D-Link I think I dont think I have ever lost N signal. It has absolutely amazing range. I think if I really wanted to I could have the D-Link centrally located and be able to reach outside without a problem.I was a little apprehensive at first because it was $270 (I could have bought two more Netgear WNDR3300's for less than that and had the same range) but the D-Link had the USB port so I opted to spend the extra cash so I could have a networked hard drive. I did have an issue with my computer freezing up (running 64 bit Vista Ultimate) when I was trying to install the driver to access the USB. I never got the problem fixed but I plan on calling D-Link tomorrow to see whats going on. That is the only problem I have had. Actually I can safely say that my computer illiterate grandpa could have set up my network yesterday. The installation disc tells you exactly what to do and shows you a picture. So basically if you have no clue what you are doing, you will still probably be just fine hooking this up yourself.******UPDATE********I just wanted to drop in to give an update on my router. It is still going strong with no problems after a couple years of use. There were firmware issues that I had for a few months that a lot of people pointed out but they have fixed all of those and the router is back to being amazing. The range on this thing is phenominal! I still have my Netgear hooked up downstairs for guests (also dualband) and there is really no comparison in coverage. If you go downstairs you have full bars on both routers. If you go upstairs you only pick up Dlink and Netgear doesnt even show up as having a signal. I do not regret my decision to purchase this router at all and would buy it again.

Confugured the router in under 5 minutes. It worked for less than one hour. Stopped working, could not set the router back to factory default. Called D-Link support, they were clueless, after 30 minutes of troubleshooting, with an Entry level support person, then was bumped up the ladder to spend another 10 minutes with a Level 2 support rep before they decided the unit was a "LEMON", and authorized me to send it back to Amazon, who gladly shipped another unit. The second unit was DOA, which I returned to Amazon as well, after which I decided to buy a competing product. The Customer support at Amazon was excellent, who not only refunded my credit card for the purchase, but the overnight shipping that I paid for the original purchase. Hats off to Amazon !!!!

Setup went pretty smooth. No problems there.Works very well. My favorite feature is the ability to store files on it which then I can share with any computer at home. I had gotten into the horrible state of having multiple copies of photos and files on all my computers and some files and photos were only on the 'small laptop', while others were only on the 'big laptop', or on the 'old laptop' etc. It got to be a mess of endless copies of files and a big confusion for me.I was able to fix that situation by using this Storage Router. I was using a wireless router anyway, so why not take advantage of a product that handled my wireless AND helped me with storage? Perfect. And now I can access my files from all my computers. The internal hard drive (2.5" SATA) doesn't come with this product, but those can be picked up for a very inexpensive price. My next project with this is to play with the FTP server so that I can access my files from work, my sister's house or anywhere.I had mentioned that setup was smooth. And it was. But, it did take me some time. I'm not a 'brain' about computers so I really need to take my time and read through things to get these kind of items to work for me. I just don't want anyone reading this to think it was just plug and play....it took me some time. But, I'm very happy with the results. The color LCD screen on the router is just a bonus feature. Nice, but not really a big deal for me. It's a little small (3.2") but it is nice to see photos scrolling through.

I had a lot of success with D-Link routers in the past, and figured this would be the best router on the market. Boy was I wrong. The range was horrible, the N at 5GHz barely worked on my laptop which is less than 100 feet away from the router (and was not a reliable connection), and it flat out did not provide the range I expected. Even after disabling 5GHz N mode entirely, the range was still extremely poor. My old DIR-655 was a much better option (excluding the 5GHz N capability). Now going to give the Netgear simultaneous dual-band router (WNDR3700) a try and hope that it fares better.

Pros: Reliable, photo frame/ framechannel feature, Shareport, network scheduling, guest zone, WPS setup functions. Attractive design. Compact and easy to keep in a living roomCons: Terrible touchscreen, Not a dual-channel radio router, not worth $300 MSRP. I was able to buy this from amazon new at half price, and I suggest you do the same.I bought this router to replace an old/loud/overheating wireless G netgear MR814, and I was not disappointed. The router has served my 2 laptops, 1 desktop, and 2 mobile devices without a fuss once its been set up. Out living room is about half the size of a normal living room, so the small digital frame is still very visible even from the other side of the room.Overall, I love the design direction that D-Link took with the DIR-685, and I hope more routers will follow the idea in the future.

I recently set up my home wireless system upgrading from a Belkin G to a Netgear Rangemax dual band and it was a complete disaster. Rangemax has known firmware issues that will not allow multiple machines to connect without re-booting and disconnecting every five minutes - customer support for Rangemax was Horrific.I now set up this DIR-855 and absolutely love it~! At any one point in our network we will have up to three laptops, four desktops and two X-box machines running at the same time and have not experienced any lag or drop in signal using both the N and G channels at the same time. The boys X-box live experience has improved incredibly. I was worried about trying to find the DMZ or NAT settings on this new unit and have not had to look for them once since the initial set up.Easy to install, fast and maintains a solid connection. The only drawback that I can find in this system is that the N channel is weaker than I had expected. One desktop machine is through two walls and about 50ft from the router and the best I can pull is a "fair" connection at about the same speed I can link to the G channel. Machines that are less than 30ft and have only one wall to go through seem to consistently receive 80mbs according to the network connection status on the machines. For X-Box Live Gaming this router is excellent and feel very good about spending the additional money for a quality piece of equipment.

The DIR-685 is numerous products in one compact router. I like the router's capabilities, ease of setup and configuration as well as it's range and speed. It uses all the latest innovations to allow it to compete against the best routers on the market. The compartment for a hard drive and the USB ports allowed me to set up my printer without having to use an additional wireless print server and now I have additional storage within the unit. I'm excited to figure out what to plug into the other USB port so it can be used on the wireless network. Because of these multiple uses, it saves so much space! These are the practical uses and then there are the fun things that can be done with the LCD screen. The applications are fun and useful. It's a small screen but I didn't get it for the LCD and at the cost for it's practical uses the screen and it's applications are a fun bonus!

Solid little box that delivers tremendous performance in a very tiny and cheap package. I have this unit connected to a 60Mb metro-ethernet circuit (gigabit hand-off from the carrier). During testing when the carrier had rate limits disabled I was able to push this box to download at a rate of 500Mb and upload at 400Mb (using the default 1500 byte MTU). On LAN-to-LAN transfers it also performs extremely well.Hang a few gigabit switches off of this unit and you have yourself a nice little router for a SOHO. I highly recommend this product.

I can pick up a strong signal upstairs, at the other end of the house, and outside. My connection is always as fast as I can get anywhere else (school, work, library, etc.), and my modem and cable service are basic. At first, I thought, cool, a good set of features that could be useful -- router, networked storage, and picture viewing screen. But when I got the product home and started really thinking about how to use it -- I was actually at a loss to see why these feautures should be put together.A router should be, first and foremost, an excellet wireless router. And for most people, even in a single family home, the placement of the router is really important to be optimized for a good wireless signal. This can often mean placing the router up high on furniture (top of bookshelf) or high on a wall, etc.But once you do this, the other features of this router become really questionable. The network storage drive (which is NOT included, beware!) ... for example, makes the physical size/weight of this router about double that of a standard Wireless N router. So, harder to place on the wall or out of the way up high. And obviously, once you position the router optimally for wirless coverage, the odds of you even being able to see the router at all ... much less usably see the tiny screen ... is pretty much zero. So, I think I'm just left wondering ... who exactly is going to find this combination of feature useful over just a good, well-functioning wireless N router?

If you don't have advanced routing requirements, this will work great for you. The range and speed have been great; no stability issues, etc.In my case, I needed to add a route to allow local machines to reach another subnet on the internal network. On the router this replaced, it was trivial to create a route on the LAN interface. This router only supports adding static routes on the WAN interface. This is just silly -- this is one of the most trivial functions a router should be able to do. I contacted D-Link support, and apparently the feature has been removed, and they are trying to find out why.

If I could disable rebooting that would be a start. I'd be perfectly happy if the whole reboot mechanism didn't work and I had to unplug it if I want it to reboot. Then it wouldn't have the power to do it of it's own accord. All the solutions offered here are unique to the person's own situation. Changing channels, turning of SSID transmission, switching security settings, switching off wireless mice etc. None of that should be necessary if the thing is capable of working just fine most of the time. What is it that makes it think it needs to reboot once in a while. The most annoying thing of all for me now is that I have no idea what I should buy instead. I'm perfectly happy to throw this thing in the trash, but don't know what I could replace it with that isn't just as bad. Clearly a D-Link product of any kind is out of the question, but what's better?

My title says it all. It appears to be a good router with lots of features and options. It was stable for me for a week. However, the range on the 5 Ghz N is horrible. Its usable at 5-10 feet but dies right after that. The G and 2.4 N is better but is not as good as my Netgear N. So if you don't need range and don't mind paying the premium, its a good router. I wouldn't recommend it though. I think there are better products at drastically lower prices. I sent mine back and using Netgear wireless N and happy with my decision.

The DLINK DIR-855 router is the best router I have purchased to date. I originally thought I was going to have problems with weak signals and the like, but I found that it was the older hardware that I had trying to connect to it that was the problem. Some of the older technology was having a hard time staying connected if it even saw the router at all.The router is somewhat easy to configure with the included configuration wizard on the CD. I did this using a Vista PC and did not have any problems. For the more advanced configurations, DLink provides the standard and easy to configure web-based browser access configuration screen. What is odd is that everything I read touts using the 5Ghz range if you can, but that signal is weaker overall even with newer hardware connecting to it. It is a good 10% less. Regardless, my laptop connected easily enough and reports a full 300MB of throughput. Like I said, I did have some older DLink bridges that I was using to connect to my DGL-4300. At the exact same distance with the DIR-855, one bridge could see the router with a 15% signal and the other couldn't see it at all. I replaced those with the DAP-1522's and all is well now.For those who want to know, this router does not support WDS which is a dissapointment if you want to use older DLink routers to bridge to this. They state in their forumns that they do not intend to add WDS later.I work at home and need the bandwidth, so if you do as well, this is a great product and very much recommended.

So, I've had this router for a few months now. It works, but drops connections eg. when using torrents. Also, the router is always in NAT-mode and there is no alternative. Also, setting ANY setting at all requires router reboot. It also claims to support multicast, but really it doesn't - the current firmware is broken. So no watching IPTV with this.

Since the 1.21 firmware release, this router has hung every few days and required a power cycle to reset. Maybe it would be OK if you hook it up to a timer such as Indoor Electronic Programmable Plug-In Timer with Front LCD (High Wattage) that power cycles it daily when you're not using it. I would recommend reading the forum comments on dlink's own web site.

A friend bought this product a while ago, but just decided to have me install it. I installed it on his computer (which runs XP), but my up-to-date Vista laptop cannot connect to his router wirelessly. It detects it, but that's it. Even using all the same settings and right password, I can't get Internet access. D-Link will NOT support this product even though he just opened it, so BUYER BEWARE! I would not recommend ANY D-Link product. His previous wireless router was also a D-Link, and it stopped working not long after it was successfully installed.

Hi All,I've had this thing for a couple of years. I use it with Verizon Wireless service and a PCMCIA adapter. It's fine. It works. Glitches? Yep, it flakes out on you now and then.Problems mostly seem to stem from Verizon's service in my case. I've noticed increasingly flakey behavior around drive-time and lunchtime when (I suspect) the cellular traffic is highest.Yep, I had this thing lose it's mind once. I simply reconfigured it and got it going again. That's a nuissance. But once a year is not really a big problem in my book.I have used this all accross the US. And the performance is generally better than using the Verizon card natively in my laptop. The two things that probably make for problems are as follows: First, the service providers oversubscribe their services, and Second, a lot of people are less-than-stellar at configuring wireless networks. (No offense, I know that a lot of this s**t is rather arcane.)Buy this if you feel like it. It will probably be just fine. Note that I just bought a Kyocera KR2 to try it out as an alternative. Good luck.

Nice unit. Easy to install. Not sure the 5Ghz is that useable. I have 7 computers hooking up to the unit around the house. I use the D-Link dual band USB device on two of them. All computers work better on the 2.4GHz band. The signl shows up stronger.

After researching on CNET and a few other sites, I was drawn to this router because it offered the ability to allow me to share my printers and a USB harddrive for backups of each of my home computers. The setup was easy, it works as advertised and is fast. My old router was good, but I've upgraded to the highest level of wireless security and still find it faster than the WEP security on my old router. It has some sort of display on the top, but where I have it, I can never see the display - so I have no idea what it says.

I have never written a review before in amazon, but my experience with this product has been too frustrating to just forget about it.I bought this product about a year and a half ago. I have H/W Ver: D1. The system worked OK the first month. Then all the LEDs froze green and the network went down. I called customer support and they told me to disconnect the device power cord and wait for about 30 sec before I connected it back. This worked in getting the router to work again. However, waiting 30 sec only sounds reasonable if this rarely happens (maybe once every 3-6 months). As time went by however, the need to do the power cycle procedure became more frequent. Now, the router does not come out of LED freeze mode even if I wait half a day before I connect the power cord again, which to me it means that the router is broken.Among the things I tried I have to mention that I installed F/W updates which did not improve things significantly. I bought another router today (something other than D-Link) and shared my experience with a sales representative. He said that 2 years was a reasonable life for a wireless router because they are turned on all the time. However, I have a cable modem that is well over 2 years old (Motorola) and it is flawless so far. Granted, a cable modem is not a wireless router, but the point is that both are on all the time, and one does a good job and the other one (D-Link DI-624) doesn't.I will not buy another D-Link product again. Hope this is useful to you.

I went with a unit costing over $100 as I was tired of those $50 units dieing after a year or not performing well. This unit so far hasn't died but it also falls short on some of it's claims. My expectation is anyone looking at spending more than $25 for a router on sale has the knowledge level of somebody wanting to tweak more advance routing features.First off my biggest problem with this unit is it's PPTP support which it claims it fully supports. Like so many other units out there this unit has issues passing the traffic correctly and what you will find is either the unit works well doing a PPTP connecton out or in but not both ways consistantly. The problem is in the Application Layer Gateway which resets itself by default when you screw around with the PPTP settings. ALG off appears to work best but then incoming PPTP will drop after 3 minutes or so.Anyway I reproduced this over and over and documented for DLink support to which they said they would reproduce and get back to me. In speaking directly with their technical support, Eric French, they said they would work on this issue and get back to me however after two weeks and no return call I attempted to contact Kevin and DLink over and over both by voice and email only to get voicemail and no responses to emails. The firmware for this unit is years old and has not been updated so it appears it is an dead product. The stock antennas suck and for decent range you need a 7db or higher external antenna. The unit can be easily flooded with packets causing it to not really lock up but need a reboot to get performance back.I would not buy this unit again, would not recommend for my own customers but at least it's not died like so many sub $50 units do after a year.

This is an awful product. It crashes and reset often. I had it repaced by DLink and still no luck. To make matters worse DLink tech support are rude and clueless. I have 2 other friends with the same device and similar problems. There may be an intrinsic design flaw with this device.I finally replaced the router with another brand and has been very happy since. The device was NOT purchased via Amazon.Note to Amazon - allow a 0 star rating which is what the device deserves.

The DIR-450 seemed to work at first, but within 1 hour it went into power reset/cycling over and over. Hard reset, power off/on, nothing worked. D-Link tech support worked with me for 25 minutes and gave up. He said the unit appeared to be defective and told me to return it to the store (Fry's).From the other postings, a DOA unit seems to be way too common. I am looking for a different manufacturer now.

This is a piece of garbage very poor design weak signal is the biggest problem, even with the three antennas. They even had recalls when unit was first put on market for miswired antennas. It caused bad performance problems I heard. LOL it couldn't be any worse then it is now unless you consider no signal. Two cans with string would give a better signal. For the price this unit is horrible. It should be priced way lower based on its performance. See my review on the D-Link DWA-160 adaptor where I give a little more detail on this router and give my review on the DWA-160. I brought this router here on Amazon big mistake, I can't return for my money back, and of course they are way out of state from where I live in Toms River, NJ. I may sell on Ebay to try and get some money back to buy a better router.

I've been through nearly a dozen routers in the last 8 years. Sometimes the updates were for technology changes, but most of the time they were to get away from problems with the previous router. Most recently, I nearly lost my mind with a Netgear Rangemax than constantly dropped connectivity. Since I hooked upthis router, I have been in heaven. With 3 laptops, 1 desktop, a printer, an xbox 360, and a PS3 all hooked up at the same time, I've experienced no loss of connectivity AND, in most cases, no drop in speed. The router IS expensive, but it is DEFINITELY worth it.

The routers "N" speed is great. However the range is a little disappointing. I had expected a little more from it. But this is my first "N" router. So maybe this is normal. I really have no issues with it. Even the range only goes down outside of my house, so it's not really an issue. It works great for all my needs. I mainly bought this router for its dual band function. And it was well worth it. I'm running both 2.4ghz and 5ghz from the router without any problems. And speed is still awesome. Cost is the only reason I dropped a star.

This router is awesome. It is faster than anything I have ever used. I have Comcast cable internet service. The setup was a little tricky (using both Vista and XP computers), but I managed to hook it all up. The range is incredible. This replaced a Linksys WRT54GS router with HGA7T antennae, WRE54G range expander, and WPS54G print server. The price is high but it certainly does everything I need it to do, and more.

I'm one week into EVDO service and still learning new things every day in that regard. One thing I learned is that you need to choose equipment that is reliable, consistent and durable. Sadly, the D-Link DIR-450 is none of these things.I looked into the D-Link model as they are the actual vendor for the Kyocera KR-1. The KR-1 is a highly regarded consumer grade model in what is admittedly a pretty small field. For most consumers it appears that the KR-1 is the default suggestion for those looking for a router solution for the EVDO service.I should have been wary of the D-Link even before purchase as it did not support all of the same cards that its older sibling supported, but the most recent (and only) firmware upgrade added support for my card so I figured I was set.Everything went well the evening I installed it and I went to bed with visions of salvation from satellite internet while stranded in rural American. Imagine my surprise when I woke up and could not enter the admin page using the password I set up. Then I could not access the router at all. I had to go into the crash firmware reinstallation mode to resurrect the box - with ~12 hours of ownership - Strike One.Strike 2 was the painfully ill designed UI that requires arbitrary rebooting between setup steps. The rebooting process takes around 80 seconds, so even entering a small set of DHCP reservations is a time consuming chore. Half an hour later I had all my static IPs entered but on the next reboot carried out by the UI all of the settings were reset to default...Strike 3 was today when it would reset the subnet I had setup back to the default. Doing this ate my DHCP settings, but I thought I had outsmarted the demon box and backed up the config using their UI option. Oddly, the restore seemed to only affect the wireless and basic network settings and did not include the DHCP. I spent another 30 minutes entering the reservations when it both reset the password and on the following reboot reset the subnet again.I have little doubt that D-Link will straighten this out, but am extremely surprised that they have a relatively new product in the field that is the mirror of a well established model *that they designed and support* and it is so flaky. In a rural setting, setting up EVDO can be challenging so having unreliable equipment is one extra headache you don't need. Wait for this product to mature slightly and check out other support boards to see how others are handling it in the field.
