I am not an audiophile, but I own many pairs of earbuds, and tested these by quickly switching from one pair to another.
I compared these to Bose IE2, skull candy ink'd 2, urbeats, and skull candy 50/50. The sound quality was SLIGHTLY better than the $12 ink'd 2, and slightly better than the urbeats, which IMO sound muffled. The Bose IE2 are much more comfortable, cheaper, and sound slightly better. The Skull Candy 50/50s cost 1/4 the price of these headphones, and sounded significantly better to my ears. I asked 3 family members to compare the audio quality of these headphones to the ink'd 2 ($12 headphones), and all three felt that the Audotechnicas were only a slight improvement.
It honestly baffles me that these are rated so highly. They are cumbersome to fit, uncomfortable to wear, average sounding, and very expensive. None of the headphones I compared these to are great headphones, but I would recommend any of them over these.
Overall a decent set of inner ear headphones that appear well made.
Like I said in the title, these are great with Beethoven. The mids are very dry, coupled with fluid bass and treble, I can hear bows on strings, I can hear breath in woodwinds! I'm hearing mid-detail in cymbals I've never heard with ANY sound system! The soundstage is the BIGGEST I've ever heard in ANY set of headphones, which is obviously good for symphonic stuff. The bass presence is a little pervasive for classical, but not too bad and it helps define the massive size of the soundstage.
All of these factors carry over to classic rock very well. Listening to Steely Dan with these is like a brand new divine Steely Dan experience!
I love these the most with heavy metal! In Metallica's "...And Justice for All" album I can actually hear mid-detail in the distorted guitars (much to the chagrin of James Hetfield's efforts). In Devildriver songs I can...hear detail! Great band but too fast/sophisticated for most sound systems to pick up much of anything; they can only get a gist of what Devildriver is doing, these earbuds capture almost everything!
In doing head-to-head comparisons I've found that these sound a lot like my vintage Beyerdynamic DT 990 600s. Not quite as much detail but better clarity, and otherwise it's practically a 1-1 comparison.
Okay I'm done.
To the people who claim that they don't have the bass you wanted, notice that the product lineup is called "solid bass," not "face-melting, seizure inducing, head-banging, world-ending bass that scares away hurricanes."
These are not beats headphones, and in my opinion that's for the better. They offer bass in respectable quantities with a respectable quality but REMAIN TRUE TO THE MUSIC.
Update 11/14/14
The "leather"(imitation leather) carrying case has started to crack and peel on the bottom. However, the case structure is fine.
Disclaimer: I am by no means an audiophile. I am only basing this review on MY opinions of the sound reproduction of these headphones.
Comfort is exceptional for a set of in ear headphones. They come with 4 sizes of silicon plugs, they are durable and very easy to swap and clean, with a resealable plastic case included. The dome just above the earpiece itself rests comfortably in my ears and creates a very secure fit. They do a fantastic job at blocking out outside noise and I can wear these while running and at the gym without the fear of them falling out.
Also I need to mention the case they provide with these headphones. It is made from leather and is actually a reinforced box with a magnetic clasp. It is great for travel as I don't have to worry about them being crushed in my bag, and there is also enough room inside it to pack away the additional earpieces as well.
If you are in the market for a top quality pair of in-ear headphones, keep these on your list for sure.
I wanted to move up from my UE200s and read countless reviews on the internet which gave conflicting views on just about every model of earphone out there. Then it dawned on me; if I already trust a company for good sound, why not just take the plunge and go with them.
When these arrived they had the middle sized buds on. I tried the phone on and the sound wasn't good and they didn't sit well - they would ease out of the ear. After reading I found that there are two seatings for a bud. So I took the bud off and pushed it back on on the outer seating. WHAT A CHANGE! They sat comfortably and the sound was way better. In subsequent testing I tried the slightly smaller bud [there are four bud sizes], where the sound went lighter and the phones felt a little loose. So I tied the larger buds. That's me. The sound is full and the buds are comfortable and don't move. I'm not a very big person but obviously some parts of me are larger than average. Ahem.
One of the most unexpected findings is how much the Equalizer settings change the heard music. With the old UE200s each change of setting just seemed to vary the mediocrity. Now there is a very clear and obvious change in sound with every change of setting in a computer/MP3 player EQ.
The size of the units had me wonder when I first saw them advertised. Thankfully they have no problems in wearing, and the clever angled design makes them sit and feel great.
The phones are not noise isolating. This was also something I wanted so that I could be reasonably aware of the world around me. Having said that, if you listen to music with moderate to high volume it will tend to drown out everything around as they have direct access to your ears.
They come with a case. I find it to be too large. Earphones are meant to be portable and the case is just too fat to put in to a pocket. It's not such a problem when wearing casual clothes that are less 'fitting'.
In music so far I have found them excellent for Jazz and Carlos Klieber's delivery of Beethoven. With Rock they have been great as long as the source is of good quality. With some of the lesser quality MP3 tracks the sound can be too bass heavy and thumping, needing changes to the EQ settings. So the better the source the better the sound - and that's how it should be.
I have CKs55 way better balanced sound then CKS99
Even they call it 'Solid Bass' I can not say it has too much or overwhelming bass, no, I think it has just right.
I found these headphones well rounded and suitable practically for all my music. You definitely would need decent source of music , personally I do not consider Apple products eligible for such title. Get a nice player - Cowon, Fiio and these headphones would shine. They are not hard to drive, so dedicated headphone amp would be too much.
Regardless they look and pictures they are super comfortable. I have weird ears and there are very few in-ear headphones which I can use without irritation or discomfort, these CKS99 so far best ones.
If you're not an audiophile, chances are excellent you'll love the cks77 as much as these (for less, no less).
These are excellent earphones, don't get me wrong, but the greatness of the cks77 model kinda renders this model insignificant...
Would recommend!
I got these in Japan for around $70. These are the best headphones I have ever owned. Of course the shape and size of the ear buds have a big part of that. With these in and sound off, the noise canceling is great. And when they are on, I can not hear anything going on outside.I have a $60 pair of over the ear headphones and the PS3 wireless headset. These earbuds are the best.
After charging, it paired to my android Galaxy Note and all the buttons worked with all my music and video apps. I listened to Afro Blu from the album Black Radio. Then from Soundcloud I listened to Elhae- All Away. "Elhae - All Away" has some pretty deep bass, and it sounded great. Listened to some Bone Thugs n Harmony. All the base is there. I really feel like I am hearing music again.
APT-x works. My phone does not have it, so watching videos, the audio lags. But my iMac does have apt-x and there is no lag.
My one complaint. The cable is not long enough to clip to my belt, but too long to clip to my coller. It does not really clip to my shirt unless I wear a polo. I usually clip it to my messenger bag strap. When I work out, I run it inside my shirt and clip it to my sleeve. Same when I am on my bicycle trainer. And it is great to watch a movie on my computer while on the bicycle trainer and have good sound over the hum of my rollers.
This comes with a nice case, 4 sizes of earbuds, and a usb charger. The packaging is nice, but once you take everything out it would be a pain to put back in.
Instructions are all in Japanese. The pairing button is next to the charging port behind a panel on the bottom. There is a slider that locks the buttons one way, and is on/off in the other direction. You have to hold it in position for a second for the on/off to register, and it will give a beep when it registers. I turned the volume on my phone all the way up, and then used the volume on the unit to adjust the amp volume. I can never turn it all the way up. The lights blink to tell you stuff.
I get almost 10 hours of use these and I use an app called Bluetooth Headset Battery. It simply has a timer or you can set a count down for whenever you use one of your bluetooth devices (you can have up to like 8 I think).
Great product, I hope the price comes down in the states.
If you mostly listen to hip-hop and dance music you may prefer the CKS-77 as the bass response will knock your socks off at half the price of the CKR9.
I have both but haven't touched the 77s since I received the CKR-9. I love them!
But there are ups n downs. Headset earpads actually big n stylish are not covering ear n speakers are not ergonomically bend like other models inside the ear chamber. The resault is that after a few hours it become inconvinient. I wish inner pads could be a bit longer in hight n as d same in width just like sony model mdr10 which i also bought and these have perfectly fit earpads that after long hours gives the weighless feel. You can't say that about WS99 but if comes to sound quality and heavy bass what i was really after this sony headset produce sound that sound like broken speakers in lowe volume compare to WS99.
And i like the design yet one cable could be a good improvement n most definately undetachable cable its a minus.
