I liked everything about this hard drive until it failed after just 6 months. I know this is always a possibility for hard drives but I hope it isn't indicative of the quality of these or an explanation for why they are such a good deal.

I custom fabbed a NAS for file storage, backup, media streaming, etc. and am a fan (and shareholder) of Western Digital products. While some offer opinions between manufacturers, I'll just say that I need reliability and performance in any drive, and this drive delivers.It's true; these drives run cooler due to having 3 platters for this capacity (reliability) yet not sacrificing on the rest just cause it's "green" by still producing 7,200 RPM & 32MB cache (performance). Don't be swayed by a lower price for the similar WD10EACS model; that one is an older generation that runs at 5,400 RPM at half the cache. Your drive is your investment on the data you keep on it, so it's worth the extra few dollars.I have 2 of these set up on a RAID configuration on my NAS and they do run very quiet indeed and are great for storage, however don't look at this drive if this is to be your OS drive; look at a smaller capacity for optimum performance. Bear in mind this ships bulk (no retail box, cables, literature, etc.).

I bought it because of the high mark of people reviews. It is very quiet. It is fast (SATA-2 with 3GB/s) I guess its speed is improved because of 32MB cache. There are no problems so far. I really like it.

I've had this hard drive for 2 months now and it's working great, 0 noise, it barely heats and the speed is really good, so till now is a 100% trust product.---------Comment added in January 2013.Still working without issues.

I bought this 1 TB HD to be used as an external HD drive with a Macally Enclosure, it's working fine, fast, silent and the enclosure does not heat, I read it's eco friendly, spending few kilowatts.

The packaging that I saw in the customer photo was not what I got. The HD shipped with nothing at the ends. Keep in mind that this HD comes with no documentation, no cables and is not formatted. That means it is not a plug and play. You will need to set it up in your system and make some bios modifications connect a SATA2 cable to your motherboard and the power supply hook up. You will then need to format the drive prior to use. The drive is VERY quiet. I can't hear it above the sound produced by may main drive. At $90 it is an outstanding value.

My PURCHASE WAS FOR A, Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Dr...ACTUALLY, IS NOT 1 TB; THE DISK IS ACTUALLY A 911 GB HARD DRIVE. BUYERS BEWARE, AS I WILL BE AND I WILL PROBABLY NOT PURCHASE Western Digital AGAIN. I PAID FOR I TB, BUT WAS DENIED.

Hey I can't complain this was a seemless install and the product has worked great, I guess my only complaint is that you will not recieve the full 1TB of space for use... It yields about 978G which is not what I paid for...this is the only reason for not awarding the full 5 stars

This is an OEM product so you get the drive in an electrostatic bag, a silca gel desiccant packet, and nothing else. I installed the drive, formatted it and have been using it to store large amounts of audio and video data files ever since.The drive is virtually silent. Plus, it's plenty fast enough for me. Very nice.I chose the "green" drive because it uses a bit less power than the conventional drive and I was concerned that my power supply might not handle one that draws more wattage.The capacity of this drive is mind boggling. My first computer with a hard drive could store 20MB. This 1TB drive is the same physical size, but will hold approximately 50,000 times as much data. WHOA!

I used this to replace my 250gb internal drive. I used it on an external adapter to copy the contents of the 250gb and was amazed that this drive just got barely warm. All my other drives get so hot that you can not handle them until after it cools down. This one was no problem.It is also very quiet. I had it on my desk and could barley hear it.Excellent product and would definitely buy another, if I had the cash.

We bought two "Western Digital 1TB SATA 32MB Cache Green Power Bulk/OEM Hard Drives" for use in our D-Link DNS321 2-Bay 2 3.5-Inch Bays, SATA, RAID 0/1, Gigabit Ethernet Port Network Storage Enclosure, since we wanted a network RAID 1 drive. I looked at Seagate 1TB 32MB Cache SATA Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000333AS, but there have been firmware issues reported.These drives are low power ("green"), so they give off less heat. This was a major concern since there are two drives in the enclosure.The drives are OEM, which means they come with nothing extra. Just the drive in an anti-static bag. No documentation, cables, etc. This was fine since they just connected in to the enclosure and it did the formatting.This is a fairly inexpensive drive, it has a large capacity, and it is "green". Just what I was looking for! Recommended!

I recently ordered three of these drives. Two for a NAS device and one for an additional internal drive on my PC. All arrived in great shape and all are operating perfectly.They are quiet and cool. The two in the NAS enclosure (A D-Link DNS323) run cool enough that you can't tell whether they are powered up or not by sound or the temperature of the enclosure - and they are indeed spinning.As mentioned by other reviewers, performance could be a little better, but particularly when one is running over a network, that's not as big an issue. As a second drive as one of mine is, it's noticeably slower than a performance drive but then again I didn't pay performance prices either. When it comes to performance and storage per dollar, I think these drives are hard to beat.

I own a few of these specific drives for storage in a Windows Home Server. They're everything they're advertised as. Fast, particularly considering they're only 5400rpm, quiet (should be listed as near-silent as you can't even hear seeks), and cool. They consistently run at least 2+C less than a WD Black 7200rpm drive in the same drive bay, though I really doubt 2C worth of heat is really worth mentioning. I can't comment if they draw less power, but they're advertised to. I also can't comment on the longevity or reliability of these drives as I've only had them in use for a month or so but based on the price/performance/value I'd have no problem recommending them for bulk storage for other users.

I used this hard drive in my TiVo HD and everything has been working great. I decided on this particular drive because of the cool temperatures and 'green' status. My TiVo has gone from being able to store 21 hours of HD to 142 hours of HD video. I may purchase this again for my desktop pc.

I've got this hard drive running in my Media Center PC.I bought it for the amount of storage for my "legally" downloaded movies and music!So for no problems in the past month.The system I built has only the best components in it from EVGA, Corsair, WD, Intel, and Antec.The most important component though is this hard drive.I run it hard everyday for at least 2 - 3 hours at a time.Mostly movies for the kids and music during the day for me.So far so good. Running smooth.

I needed a high capacity internal drive for my desktop to hold all my video and other files. This drive has been very quiet and does not seem to run hot which is a big plus. When formatted it comes in around 930+ Gb. Install went pretty smooth and setup wasn't too hard. Look at WD online for instructions and you are set.

this is a great product a good price. the western digital drive works just as intended. i put it in my iomega screenplay media player. i must warn you, you need to initalize and formmat the drive before use. the drive comes with no instructions,and i spent hours installing and uninstalling the drive before i called tech support, and realized my error.Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD10EADS

The first hard drive that was shipped was defective. It had a few thousand bad sectors that would have taken over two weeks to regenerate. Amazon sent the second one that so far so good. Passed the SMART test and no reported bad sector... A piece of advice to anyone buying a hard drive, test it out thoroughly before putting anything important on the drive and have several backups. The sad truth is that companies are looking to cut costs and outsource production to third world countries and as a result ship many more defective units.

I use this for my windows 7 htpc.Pros:1. Plenty of space for all my media2. Very silent, great for htpc3. Lowest power consumption4. Supposed to be the most reliable drive on the marketCons:1. Performance matches other drives in its class, but read/ write speeds could be better.

This OEM drive is perfect for a Mac Pro, which uses a plug-in system that doesn't require the cables that ship with retail units. Open it up, plug it in and you're good to go. So far the hard drive has worked without a hitch, and I use other WD drives (external and internal) without a failure so this one should last a long time.
