I have a bunch of these for video streaming, backups, and everyday use. I have never a failure or issue, they are quality drives.The only issue to be aware of is that Amazon sends them poorly packaged, often the OEM box in an Amazon box with insufficient (or no) packing material. The OEM box only uses cardboard cutouts for support, so the Amazon box should be cushioned better.

I'm using this Hard Drive with a Syba Combo IDE/SATA PCI Card SY-VIA-150 and rather elderly HP pavilion a742x Desktop with XP SP3. It works quite well and was an easy install. The HP pavilion a742x has a 160 GB HD, so being able to add a 1 TB HD was great.The drive was well packed suspended in a plastic "cradle" inside a carton. UPS didn't crush the carton. I'm happy!

As our media libraries grow, we need bigger drives. It's just that simple. I decided to pick up one of the WD Green drives, and formatted it without an issue. It's not the fastest of drives (I'm using it in an external USB enclosure) but it does what I need it to do: store a lot of data without (hopefully) failing.The only thing that sucks and dings a star from this is the warranty. Most drives are coming with 5 year warranties, and this only had a 3 year warranty. Granted, if the drive goes south, I'll be more upset about the data loss than the drive. WD, in my experience, has been awesome about returning faulty drives and getting replacement ones to me in a timely manner.

I have a 7 year old desk top (Intel P875 I think) that had 2 Seagate Barracude 120Gig ESata drives . Decided to replace these 2 with the 1Terabyte Drive from WD. My PC is so much more quieter now. No problems installing the drive. I did a re-install of Windows XP (I keep the OS on a separate IDE drive, and all my data is on this new 1Terabyte drive). I've had the drive now for about 3 months and it's going great. Can't beat the price.

I bought this drive and installed it the day after Mother's Day 2009 (May 10). It died on May 18, 2009. That's eight days. I had just finished moving all of my data from my old failing drive to this one the day before its boot record or MFT decided to call it a career. Thankfully, I use the Mozy service to back up my important stuff, so I was only out a few photos and an album I had just downloaded.Customer Service from WD was useless. I was told to get an RMA number, pay for shipping to AND from their facility, and wait up to 15 business days for the replacement. Or, I could utilize one of their certified data recovery services, which I'd have to pay for. They apparently do not recognize a difference between day 8 of ownership or day 800.Thank God I was still within the Amazon return window. They're taking it back and giving me a full refund. I prefer WD over Seagate, but I would shy away from any of these "green" drives. I read some issues about them when they first came out, thought I'd wait until the firmware was upgraded and then purchase. I guess it didn't make a difference.

Bought this drive for my media server i have setup in a old PM G4. Ran thru a sonnet SATA card this drive is noticeably faster than the 300GB ATA100 drive i was using. Took a little over a hour and a half to transfer all 300GB, average write speed was about 100MB a second. I've always bough WD hard drives and none of them have ever been close to their claimed capacity. I will buy Seagate next, heard they are closer.Can't beat the price tho. 900 some GB is a lot of data.

At $95, this 1TB drive is the "Sweet Spot" for hard drives right now. The new 2TB version, at over THREE times the price, is not worth it (yet).I have seven of these in use right now. Five in a Windows Home Server, and two in desktops. All of them have worked flawlessly, and my ancient 3Ware 9500S-8 controller card in the server worked fine with them.I used to buy all my OEM drives from NewEgg, but NewEgg still insists on improperly packaging OEM drives for shipment. Over the last 4 years, I've bought 10 or so Seagate Barracuda's from NewEgg, and 5 of them have failed. I attribute this to improper packaging from the Vendor. The key to long life of an OEM drive is PROPER PACKAGING for shipment!The first one I got from Amazon worried me. It was packed even worse than NewEgg. But I (and I suspect others) complained about it and now Amazon is doing a good job of the packaging. The last 5 have come in well protected. Thanks for listening Amazon!I have three older drives left to replace in my Windows Home Server (old 300GB Seagate Barracuda's). I'm waiting for the next price drop, then I'm going to replace the last 3. Then I'll have 8TB in my WHS :)

There is no diagnostic software to download for Macintosh. If you have problems at the hardware level, you will have to find a way to test it with Windows, but then what about your Mac file structures. It's too early for me to say whether there are reliability issues, but since there are numerous complaints, the first thing I did was start testing it. I had to use a third party utility to run tests.When used heavily, you can hear the drive and if you have active cooling, it will kick in. When it is idle, it all quiets down.Also, Amazon is back to its old ways of sending the drive with almost no padding. By "almost no" I mean there is a thin layer of bubble wrap and an anti-static bag. Other than that, it bounces around inside the shipping box.

In 15 years of building pc's this is the quickest failed drive I've ever purchased.It has barely lasted a month of use. I was simply using it as a data dump and not the primary system (OS) disk and am returning for a refund.5 stars to Amazon for taking it back and 0 stars to WD for such a product.

It seem like Western Digital has Lost there way in making Hard drives that last a long time in 2weeks time Dead it does not make any sense to buy them anymore I have bought 3 hard drive at 3 different times and now all 3 are dead its just bad business on there part I was a loyal customer but now after this last one that died I am looking for another hard drive Maker its so funny that my old Maxtor 133GB still works today with no problem and this WD 1TB dies in 2 weeks Be warned it does crash.

The drive worked well for about a month. The build in SMART feature caused windows to display a message stating the drive failed. I used the Western Digital website to easily get a replacement drive. The drive would be perfect if it hadn't failed.

I bought this to replace a failing Seagate 750gb 7200.11 drive in my Netgear Readynas Duo. I originally only bought the Seagate drive because it was a match for the drive that originally came installed with the ReadyNas. What a mistake, the Seagate is noisy, hot, and after 6 months is reporting 10 new bad sectors a day. After reading some forums and seeing the price of this new(er) Green model from WD I decided to give it a try. Now this drive is not on Netgear's compatible list but it does work fine. It's SO much quieter than the Seagate and it runs 10 degrees cooler and uses half the power according to reviews I've seen online. This is a big deal for a NAS. Performance is a wash since the network is really the bottleneck for any NAS box. As luck would have it, immediately after replacing the failing Seagate drive with this WD Green, the other Seagate drive in my ReadyNas started reporting failures. I removed it and ran SeaTools on it and it too failed. I now have two Seagate drives in route to their RMA dept. Never again will I purchase a Seagate drive after my experience with the 7200.11's. If you have a NAS drive, a DVR, or even a mid-range PC than this drive is perfect. It's no speed demon, but even in many benchmarks is a faster than many other 7200 rpm drives on the market.

Dead on Arrival! The shipping box and lack of packing material was just not up to the job. I was a little suspicious when I heard the slight rattle as I installed it in my Power Mac G5. Then came the ominous "tic..tic...tic", silence, then "tic...tic" of a drive that is dead. After numerous attempts to revive it and use any form of utility to read it I finally gave up and carefully placed it in the bin! My father once told me 'if you pay peanuts you get monkeys!"

The Western Digital Caviar Green SATA 1 Tb internal hard drive was a 'snap' (literally) to install in my 2-yr old Dell XPS 410. However, this OEM package did not include installation instructions, so I had to wade through Western Digital's large website to find installation assistance. Once I had those instructions in hand, however, it took just minutes to quadruple my computer's hard drive space.

Been buying West D's Green line since it came out. I have lots of drives I use to backup raw and edited HD video files. Mount them im Thermaltake external BlacX's. They run cool and quiet. None have had any problem...yet.

I have used both Western Digital Green 1TB and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB in DLINK 323 NAS device for about a month. These are my experiences... Seagate didn't need firmware update.Packaging:WD was packaged very well with cushion padding where as Seagate was packed really lousy. I had ordered 2 drives in each brand and one of the seagate boxes looked like it was opened already (may be it was human error while packaging; I didn't bother).Noise:Seagate is noisier than WD but it is much smoother than WD. Meaning, WD produced lot of hard clicking sounds that really irritated me (both drives; may be just the two I received were defective). Clicking sounds from Seagate felt normal to me (and it was muffled).Heat:Seagate got much hotter than WD. I figured WD didn't produce as much as heat because it uses "intelliseek" that runs the motor at optimal/slower speeds rather than the advertised 7200rpm.Speed:I couldn't compare speed as I was running WD in RAID1 and Seagate as Standard drives.Overall, I am NOT happy with WD mainly because of its repetitive hard clicking noises.Hope this review helps!

I bought this hard drive to free up space on my computer, I really was excellent as it is not noisy, and is fast, I could remove three lower-capacity hard drives for this. I buy one in the future of the same or greater capacity

I didn't think I'd ever need a drive this large - but now that I do, I'm glad it was dirt cheap. Much quieter than older drives, great cache size, Windows 7 loves it. This is the best value I've gotten out of any hardware purchase in the past several years. If you're looking to join the 1TB club without breaking the bank, this is it!

I ordered 2 drives. They came packaged in excellent foam cradles, inside a strong box, which was then put into a larger box. These drives are fast, quiet and all Western Digital said they would be. I wish I had room for more.Great price, fast order processing and progress reports.Thanks Amazon.

I had problems with this hard drive the moment I installed it. The reading and writing process started to lag - get slower and slower then finally just quit. To make matters worse, when I started up my computer, my computer would boot up the the point of the windows screen and just sit there. I had to shut off the computer and re-start then it would startup all the way through. Strange. I returned it and bought a 1-T Seagate for $10 more and so far haven't had any problems. I do think that "green" thing had something to do with it. I purchased the Seagate at the local Fry's and ironically, they no longer carry Western Digital hard drives because they've had so many problems with them. Hmmmm.

This product is great but make sure you check if your motherboard can read 1TB of data. Mine couldn't so I made it into a external drive with two partitions of 500gb. Low noise and a great price when I purchased it.

I bought a pair of these drives for my NAS. The dropped in easily, and the NAS recognized and formatted them with no issues. These are the quietest drives I have ever heard. When I say heard, I have had that experience once, they are dead quiet. The performance seems ok, I suspect my pc or network will be a bottleneck long before these drives.

Ok, at first I thought this drive was going to cause some problems as stated by some users. However, I haven't seen one issue yet after a month of use. The drive runs quiet and smooth. There is plenty of space and for the price, so I can't complain. I'd recommend it to anyone who is trying to save money and help the environment.

The drive has a thickness which is too much for the bay in my notebook. This is the first time I have encountered this... I will most likely keep the drive for some future unknown use; but, I can not use it on my target notebook. Western Digital has always built and stood beind their products. My rating is mostly based on my history with them.

I haven't used the hard drive, but I noticed no padding for the hard drive during the shipping process. I was disappointed. I assume amazon knows this situation, given so many recent reviewers mentioned this. Nothing changes, they still ship without padding..

I used it as an external hard drive, so I just had to partition it. I just plugged it in and it works. It shows up on the computer as 9 hundred something MB because it is always less than the listed amount. It is quiet and works perfectly for everyday tasks or gaming. I almost filled the hard drive up already.

This hard drive (Western Digital 1 TB Caviar, Green SATA internal drive) just drops into one of the bays on my MacPro, close the computer, and you are good to go.I use the drive for the Time Machine function of the macintosh operating system. I have not had a single problem with it.Seems to be quite fast.I would buy it again.

I bought two of these and I was very pleased that I couldn't find any problems. I slapped it into my Thermaltake BlacX docking unit and the Windows instantly recognized it and installed the device drivers. Mine were OEM-bulk so you need to go thru the 2 step process of initialize then format. Be aware that under Vista's diskmanagement panel (diskmgmt.msc), you need to right click the hard drive icon display(left side) it shows a tiny red plus symbol. Then select "initialze". If you try to click the column bar(right side) where it says unallocated, then it will not show "initialize". I had to go to a forum where everyone there had the same dumb Windows question on how-to initialize. Click the correct icon and it initializes quickly. I opted for full format(not quick format) and that process takes about 10+ hours. These drives are outstanding - very quiet and less heat than others. I originally purchased the Seagate FreeAgent but I couldn't sleep at night reading about all the horror stories Seagate is currently having. With Western Digital Caviar, I'm sleeping like a baby with all my important data.

I have used the WD 1TB Caviar Green Sata drives in a previous build and I'm very happy with their performance and value for money spent. I run my drives non-stop most of the time and have found Western Digital to be very reliable and quiet.Make sure you have the appropriate power and sata cables as well as screws as this drive does not include them.

Purchased 2 of the 1 GB green drives to put in my WD Nas share drive to take it up to 4gb. These drives are quiet and the upgrade was hassle free. It took over 12+ hours for the RAID to be rebuilt but that's to be expected for a 4gb raid spread across 4 drives.

I purchased a WD Green 1TB with 32MB to use in the ReadyNAS RND2000, which comes without any disk drives. Right now I am only running one drive. I am quite happy with this setup. I use the DLNA server to serve movies and music to a D-Link RND320 media server, and the itunes server. I also use it as a file server for central storage on my home network between two PCs, one of which runs a virtual machine as well. The room it is in is typically 78-80 degrees F, and I the drive only heats up enough to trigger the fan during periods of heavy reading or writing. Sometimes I can hear the drive reading/writing, but it is quieter than I expected.

I have recently purchased this drive (two of them, really).I connect it to my Intel D945GNTL mother board and benchmark all them (with HD Tach software) and compare it with my two old WD SATA HDD. The results are that this new drive have much more transfer rate than the two old ones.The old drives are:WDC WD1600JS-00MHB0 (160GB), avg read: 51.0MB/sWDC WD2500YD-01NVB1 (250GB), avg read: 55.6MB/sThe new drive:WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1 (1000.2GB), avg read: 76.4MB/sThe shipping box packaging was not the same in both cases. One of it with very nice plastic separators, the second one with a very poor plastic bubble wrapHope that AMAZON have in future the same shipping packaging for all themHope to benefit other customers with this review.

What can you really say about a drive when it is all working as expected? That's a good thing I say, no complaints, no problems, seems quite, never notice it running. As for what other's have said, the packaging from Amazon is a little questionable, but in the end, all worked out fine.

I got this HD with my custom built PC. 1 terabyte space is more than enough. I previously had a 250 GB hard drive and I only filled up 97 GB of space on it. Very quiet. 1,000 GB hard drives are the wave of the future at an affordable price.

I was a little worried buying a "bulk" hard drive, but I went to the WD website and downloaded the installation instructions. I am a photographer and keep all of my data on a separate internal hard drive (D) and use the C drive only for programs. I traded this for an existing 500GB internal D drive that was full. I renamed the existing drive to "Z", dropped this in the drive bay, hooked up the cables, and followed the online instuctions to intall this as the D drive. I transferred all my data over, and all of my software recognized this as the D drive as if nothing had changed. I have stored the old drive off site for triple redundant backup of my old files. I happily saved a few bucks to get the bulk drive.

I have had this hard drive for a couple of weeks now and it has been great so far. The price is great for the amount of storage on this drive. However, it does not come with any cables so you may need to buy an extra sata cable if you don't have one already. Also it doesn't have any install software or instructions really but it is pretty easy to figure out how to set it up and format it if you do a little google searching.
