Found out after I got these harddrives that they are not build for RAID configurations. What I mean is that only a few select harddrives are build to be used in RAIDs. The problem is that non-RAID hardware, like these units, take too long to correct disk errors should they occur. By taking so long, the RAID software thinks the unit is bad and kicks it off the RAID setup. Hence you get all the negative reviews of NAS devices. Something along these lines: 1. bought the unit, it worked great for 2 months. 2. Unit crashed and unable to get it to work again. 3. Took out harddrive and data is still on it and it seems to work fine. 4. I conclude that the NAS is bad and therefore I give this NAS a 1 star.Only RAID drives are able to do error checks and fixes really quick, and thus the RAID software does never throw them out of the array. So these harddrives might be good for other purposes, but not for RAID.

Basic reason for buying a green drive; The key fact here is that heat kills hard drives more than anything else. Therefore, buy a harddrive that reduces heat. Ergo, buy a green drive. Drives that use less electricity when in use and generally spin lower produce less heat. If you can accept the relatively modest dip in performance for reliability over the long run, then a green drive is your best bet.I currently have two, both purchased from Amazon. No problems yet, but there is a modest decline in performance compared to my Seagate drives, but my Seagate drives tend to die faster then any other. Again, Heat Kills Hard Drives. To further reinforce this, I have Speedfan running to monitor temperatures. My Green drives on load clock in around 40 degrees Celsius often dropping to high 20s, low 30s idling. As I type this, they are at 30 degrees. Now, my Western Digital 160, non-green drive is running at 40 C idle often pushing high 40s to mid 50s on load.I don't demand extreme speed from my hard drives and I feel that losing a hard drive is a colossal pain in the butt (RAID 1 is an alternative, but replacing drives sucks period regardless of mirroring). Therefore, I'm exclusively going with green drives now.To sum it up:Low Heat = Longer Hard Drive Life

My product did not include any documentation. None of the product information specified that a connecting SATA cable was necessary. Needless to say, this did not make for a happy out-of-box experience. I downloaded installation documentation from Western Digital but due to several use, and connection options, this is not an easy-out-of-box experience. The last hard drive I purchased was very easy to install and did not require any additional cables, etc. I used the SATA cable from my dvd drive, and although the Windows 7 Device Manager acknowledges the hard drive, Windows Explorer does not, and now I have to contact Western Digital Support, as well as wait for my additional cable before I can reconnect my dvd drive. I wonder if I should have purchased a Seagate drive instead. The Amazon.com shipping was exceptional as I received my product much sooner than expected. Thank you Amazon.com!:)

I've concluded that buying Western Digital hard drives is a shot in the dark to get one that works properly. No more WD drives for me again - I don't have time to debug their junky drives. I'm returning this drive and buying a different brand hard drive. This drive was ordered 11/02/09 and arrived in apparently good condition and was packed well by Amazon, but the drive has been flaky from day one. Using it in a Windows desktop, the drive would sometimes format successfully, sometimes it wouldn't. When it would format, the drive would go offline while doing backups to it necessitating a reboot to "see" the drive again. Other times when copying files to the drive, it would "hang" for 1 or 2 minutes, then mysteriously come online again. This is the 3rd WD drive I've bought in the last 3 yrs. 2 out of 3 of them were bad - 33% success rate! Testing/debugging a bad drive to ensure it's not some other component in the computer (SATA cables, motherboard, power, etc.) is time consuming - I don't have for that, and WD has permanently lost my hard drive business.

I have been in the computer industry for years, but now retired. I have used many hard drive manufactures over the years, and have simply found Western Digital to be one of the most reliable. In fact, I had some very old western digital drives that are still being used today that are over 10 years old. Many I have retired, simply due to size of the old ones, but, they are still working hard drives. I now have a WD IDE 500gb in a family file server, and just installed this SATA 1TB drive for files, video, music, pictures etc on the family file server. I plan to buy another one and set up RAID1 for redundancy back up with the two 1TB drives. The 500gb drive I have been using it as the file server stowage for a year now. I never turn this server off and this drive has performed flawlessly. Now it is placed in the new file server as the boot & application drive with the TB drive/s for stowage. They simply work, and WD has always been the work horse drives for me. I have had so many other manufactured drives fail, but I can not remember a WD drive failure specifically.UPDATE: Months later, and the drive is still purring, and used daily as a network drive for all the computers in the house. I just purchased another one to RAID1 with it.

I received this hard drive in a small cardboard box with one side of the drive totally un-supported: Hitting the sides of the box. I will submit a photo. The photo's shown of packaging made me feel better after I had read a bad review about packaging of the drive-sure enough that review was correct. I don't know what percentage of drives are package correctly...but mine was not. You don't ship a hard drive unsupported in a box-and at least try and add some cushioning to the packaging please. The defect in this box was the tab that secures the internal supports broke free (either due to assembly error-or it broke free in transit). Either way I can't trust the drive to not fail on me in a few days/weeks/months. Buyer beware.

I picked up two of these drives to make my changeover to Windows 7 on a new computer. I ran on one of them for about a month, checking out the hardware on XP. When I installed Win7, I used the second drive for most of my programs and data. After about 24-48 hours of heavy use, that second drive croaked. It wouldn't read some data and I got a bunch of SMART errors reported when I rebooted. I saved off a few files, but it was dying fast. This obviously rules out a 5 star ranking. But I must say that WD has really good warranty service. They will ship a replacement to you before getting the old drive (with a Credit Card # on hold) and they got me a replacement shipped on the next business day with overnight shipping. Plus.....either by mistake or design, they gave me a 640-GB drive in exchange for the 500 that went belly up.Both drives have been fine since. And I have 4 1TB drives from them in my NAS.Bottom line is that I can't personally attest to a perfect product.....but I can state that they make it easy to resolve problems.

I have been using the Western Digital hard drive for about 2 weeks. I am using this hard drive in my HTPC system that sits right next to my living room TV. So far I have not heard the hard drive make any noise. This review is more about Amazon packaging then about the hard drive performance. I stay in Alabama so my hard drive was shipped from Kentucky. Overall I think my hard drive was packaged ok. The interior box that contained the hard drive was packaged well but the exterior box was not. The hard drive was packaged between 2 foam holders that held the drive in place inside the smaller interior box. The interior box was then placed inside a medium sized box that contained 2 air pillows. One of the air pillows was deflated so the interior box was able to move around in the large box. I gave the Amazon packaging a ok rating because it was packaged great inside the interior box.I think each Amazon's facilities packages their hard drive different from each other. I took a picture of the packaging so I am going to put a link up later on.

I just bought two of these and put them into a two bay RAID 0/1 all-metal enclosure with built-in fan and power supply. They are so quiet and run so cool that the enclosure is cold to the touch! But you've been told about them running cool a couple hundred times already by other reviewers of this drive.I just want to comment that apparently Amazon listened to all the complaints about these drives being thrown haphazardly into a box for them to rattle around in. When I received these two drives packaged together, each was in a separate box within a bigger box that had bubble wrap firmly in place. Within the internal separate boxes, the drives were fixed securely in place by form-fitting, clamping enclosures that made it impossible for the drive to move around during shipping. You just could not ask for better packaging. So don't be put off by the 22 or so complaints about poor packaging! The packaging problem has been solved!

WD engineering continues to impress me and I've been in the IT business for 20+ years as an engineer on all levels. When used in an Apple computer these drives impress with the hardware and OS ability to control the drive for increased performance. Some PC's are being built with this capability as well, but even without it the on-board processor performs fantastic. I would however not recommend this drive in a server due to it's variable spindle speed. In an external enclosure SATA II through Firewire 800 sustained speeds matched a WD Black 1tb drive, basically maxing out the FW800 bandwidth. Through USB 2.0 they both performed identical as well but USB speeds are based on the external enclosures chip and since it's Serial (USB) it's ONE WAY at a time which makes it slow when compared to FW400/800.Temps in an iMac were less than 109* at most times, rarely exceeding 110* which also resulted in lower fan noise.Lower Heat, Less power generally equal longer life and higher reliability however these drives are still new. But as of this review our company has 2 in a NAS Enclosure running in RAID1 for the last 4 months non-stop without any issues. The WD Black drives would be ideal when performance is what matters but in situations where energy consumption and more importantly heat is considered the ideal attribute these drives are best. The WD black is about 30% faster overall on either Mac/Pc.Spindle speed varies from 4200rpm-7200rpm on newer models, first generation varied 5400rpm-7200rpm. Both are able to stop altogether through a spin down feature however this will never "spin-down" on a windows based machine due to the indexing Windows employs that access's the drive once every 3 seconds.

Let me tell you something: SPACE IS A MUST ON A COMPUTER.Music is my life on my workstation, not to mention having around 15 GB of pictures. I have a lot of memories, as well as a lot of tunage, that I want to keep safe, protected, and to have all fit on one hard drive.I upgraded from a 250 GB Western Digital, and this was probably the best move I could have made. Granted, transferring data over always is a little bit of a pain, and I did encounter a couple of errors with my iTunes library. (The key is to maintain drive letter integrity, I found out...meaning the letters have to match up from your transfer device to your new device). But I digress. This hard drive is a tad bit louder than my other smaller drive, but you would almost have to expect a little more noise with such an increase in capacity. The hard drive response for files is very quick, and I must say that capacity is not something I am worrying about much anymore with 1 TB of space.A KEY NOTE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT: it is an OEM hard drive. This means that it will only come with the hard drive unit, no mounting screws, cables, or anything of the sort. You will need to have a spare power cord and SATA connector cord, as well as mounting screws ONLY IF you want to keep your old hard drive in the computer (which I did).I give this product 5 stars. It will be a very good investment for you if you need a lot of space, and if you don't want any worries.

Disclaimer: I've had this drive all of one day, so I'll leave commentary on reliability to others. That said, I've backed up over 100GB of data to it so far and have been very pleased with the performance of the drive and especially the noise level. For background, I'm backing up a couple of Macs to this drive inside a Icy Dock Firewire 800 enclosure using SuperDuper and Time Machine. The drive is extremely quiet, quietest I've ever owned by far, and heat even in my fan-less enclosure has not been a problem. As for speed, I was backing up at a rate of roughly 25MB/s over FW800, which suits my needs and then some. I have not had a WD drive in some time, but after the issues Seagate had with bricking drives via firmware (and even worse, the poor response by their customer support), I decided to give WD a try. So far I'm very pleased with the purchase.

This was my first hard drive purchase. Overall, I am very pleased.Even though others reported that the packaging problems were being fixed, I was still worried I'd get a box of bolts. I was happy to receive the drive in a box that was about twice as big as the drive itself, with styrofoam holders made specifically for shipping hard drives. The drive was in an antistatic bag as well.THE PROBLEM I had with the shipping came from the fact that I ordered 4 other electronic items as well, and the packager thought it would be perfectly ok to just rest them all on top of each other and throw a few semi-inflated air bubbles on top. Everything was shifting around by the time I got it. This wasn't so much a problem for the other stuff, since it was all in its OEM packaging. But I was worried about the drive. So far I haven't noticed anything wrong, but I did voice my concern to Amazon.INSTALLATION was a breeze (make sure you log into your bios setup and turn on the hard drive slot), and with WD's free copy of True Image, I had my old drive completely cloned with just a few clicks.

They dont put out as much heat as my WD ide hdd, but they are close. There could have been a little more pin configuration along with the drive packaging, but so far I am very pleased with them. It may not be as fast as a Caviar Black but it is more than adequate for storage and serving up videos and music. It is also more energy efficient but at a slight performance hit. I have more than average computer experience, this being my 4th computer build over the years plus working with computers on my day job. I needed something to use with my Thermaltake BlacX dock. This drive worked perfectly. I wanted a solid drive with a lot of space (this was written in 2009, by the way...I used to think 1 GB was a lot of space). One of the concerns I had, was cooling in the dock, which would be passive, although out in the open. This drive only got warm, so this is definitely a winner for me. Because I was using a USB interface, I can't really rate the performance, but for backing up, this is a huge bargain.I read some other reviews where they had DOA's caused by poor packaging. These (I bought two) seemed to be packaged just fine. They came in cardboard boxes and were isolated from the edges with cardboard inserts as you might expect. However, I ordered multiple items, meaning these boxes were inside a larger box.

Over the past 10 years, I have used a mix of HDD OEM's. No real pattern of any one brand failing more often than others, but I have noticed WD continually provides the best performance/capacity per dollar. I have three of these drives, all purchased from three different e-tailers (newtiger and eggdirect)including amazon, and none of them have failed or are abnormally loud. All formatted in a reasonable amount of time, installed XP and Ubuntu on two of them. Now all three have been reformatted and are sitting in a LaCie hotswap backplane in my WHS, chugging all my torrents and slinging all my music. What more could you ask for? OK, I wish I could afford the 2TB ones.

Hi,I have been a WD user for a long time and respect the Brand as one of the best in the marketplace to date. Sure, every hard drive has the possibility of failure and that is all dependent on how you use them and what you do with them. I have recently started purchasing these by the case load for my office and below you will see what we are using them for.I maintain a rather large data center for an enterprise. We were burning through LTO tapes for backup and archive...most LTO's hold 200gb/400gb compressed and or 400/800compressed [...]. A WD drive costs about $100 for 1tb. The choice is obvious....since compression doesnt yield much on a tape. We proceeded to buy some ESATA docks (example: Thermaltake BlacX eSATA Hard Drive USB Docking Station and use these drives on our servers to run nightly backups. Not only is the speed twice as fast over sata, we also always get great backups. You will need ESATA cards that can go in servers or your computer...unless you have esata ports. (example: 2PORT RAID5 Esata Pci 3GBPS External Express Card.My main project was to backup my exchange 2007 server every night on to a hard drive and then store one hard drive weekly off-site. These drives work perfectly for that purpose via a dock and the solution is supported by popular backup programs such as Veritas Backup Exec. We also purchased hard drive storage cases...for a bit of added protection. Example: DriveBox 10 packHard drive backups are now becoming the NORM due to the prices that hard drives are available for. The WD drives are exceptional due to a very very low failure rate. The reason for my story above was to prove that I actually do have faith in this product and use it for enterprise backup purposes.5/5

I've been watching 1TB Seagate and WD for a few months; needless to say, I was in no hurry. But my home server's 640GB RAID-1 was reaching its 5 year range, and that makes me nervous with electro-mechanical devices that run 24x7. I was running out of space anyhow; so an upgrade was in order. I bought Intel DG41TY MoBo, Intel E1400 CPU, and 2GB GSkill SDRAM for the MoBo. Since my old drives were ATA and I have no intention of throwing them away, I slapped in an IDE/ATA PCI card, too.I purchased two WD10EADS over Seagate's 1TB due to the reduced number of platters (EADS has one fewer plate than EACS) and the BIOS complaints I read about Seagate. Feedback on another retailer's packaging indicated less than desired protection for HDs, and I am very satisfied with Amazon's packaging. There were lots of bubbly cushioning in the carton that contains two individual boxes for each drive with additional cushioning in each HD box; as opposed to two bare OEM disks wrapped in bubblies and thrown in a cardboard box one might see elsewhere. Timing was right on mark, too. Good service Amazon!Overall, these HDs are part of a Fedora Core 10 x64 installation running on a single OS drive. The HW has one IDE/ATA RAID-1 off of the PCI card, and another RAID-1 with these two SATA 1TBs connected to the MoBo. I can't hear these additional two 1TB drives: the noise from the older two IDE/ATA drives totally masks the new two SATAs noise. Eventually, when the IDEs die, I'm sure I'll have a much calmer server. As for speed, I access these guys over my 1GB network from several clients spread across the house. I haven't run a speed test, but no one in the household has any complaints. I have quite a bit of additional space.

If you're looking for a low power drive, the Western Digital WD10EADS is one of the best options currently. It has by far the lowest idle and active power consumption statistics. That, not surprisingly, helps it run cooler than other drives as well. There is some performance loss, though most users will probably not notice. For detailed stats, look up the Winter 2008 Hard Drive Guide at Tom's Hardware. (Though you may notice how quiet and cool it is!)Also, note that this is the OEM or Bulk version of the drive, with no SATA data cable or power adapter, or screws if your system uses them.UPDATE 2-2010: Western Digital has recently introduced a new WDxxEARS series of Caviar Green drives, with a number of enhancements. And, they are priced attractively. But they come with a wrinkle that means you'll need to do some thinking about whether this earlier WDxxEADS series drive is still better for you.The WDxxEARS series uses more dense 500GB platters - so a 1TB drive has just two platters, and drives up to 2TB are available - and has 64MB of cache. So far so good. But the wrinkle is that WD is using the new series to transition to 4KB sectors on the hard drive; they call it WD Advanced Format technology. For some users - those using Windows XP, or those trying to clone a drive to the new drive - Advanced Format presents substantial issues, so the EADS seriews may still be the drive to use. For those doing fresh installs for Vista, Windows 7 or Mac systems, be sure to look at the newer drives. Read the reviews for the new drives for more info and some suggestions for where to get still more info.PACKAGING UPDATE 2-2010: Read some of the recent reviews for comments about the completely unacceptable packaging that Amazon is using to ship these hard drives. You may want to consider choosing another source for the drive.

I've read reviews on this site about how hard drive are improperly packaged by amazon, but I guess I really didn't believe it. I received a power supply and this hard drive together in a single box with minimal bubble padding, which was only on the top. Underneath that, a power supply, underneath that, a hard drive packed only in an esd bag. Did I mention the box was enormous. It was like on Ace Ventura when he was pretending to be the mailman. Needless to say the drive didn't work. Amazon was cool though, and they're sending me another drive and a mailing label for the first one. Too bad they still can't assure me that the next package will be properly wrapped. This is one thing that SHOULD NOT BE FRUSTRATION FREE WRAPPED. EVER.

There are many positives to this drive and only one drawback for general users. Please also note that this is a bulk drive - you won't receive it in Western Digital box packaging, just a plain brown box holding the drive (well secured with cardboard inserts).Positive Notes:* It's green. I know that's the buzz word of the day, but I personally do what I can to support the environment. No fuss, no muss, and excellent power savings if you take advantage of those features on your computer. Drive spins down when not in use, is quiet and fast.* Median speed = 7200 RPM. This isn't a raptor drive with >10k RPM, but for regular use this will do the trick for you. SATAII is already going to give you faster connectivity directly to the motherboard vs. the slower and older IDE cables.Watch Points:* No cables/mounting screws - you'll need have your own SATA cable (however most motherboards come with several of them) to use with the drive. Remember this is a bulk drive so you don't get the frills of unnecessary packaging and that includes no cables or screws. This is not a big deal to me because I had plenty of spares. For the value - this is my preference for a 1TB drive under $100. Price point is important to me, and Western Digital is my personal preference for hard drives.Enjoy! They are so inexpensive why not pick up a couple!

I still can finish transferring after several trials, but it made me feel upset. Hopefully it will work for me for a long time.

If you are looking to expand your storage space, you really can't beat this drive! Although you can find drives that are better in terms of performance, they will cost you much more. However, this drive does just fine for basic storage. I've already replaced 3 of my old 300GB drives with these, and I couldn't be happier with the increased storage capacity. The point is, if you need more storage capacity, BUY THIS DRIVE!Also, I have noticed that some people have complained about the packaging these come in. I am guessing they are isolated cases, because I ordered my 3 a month apart from each other, and all 3 came in the good foam packaging pictured.

I Now own two of these drives, and for the most part they work fine.I was expecting them to run a bit faster, but Western Digital had disigned them to run alittle slower. They of course still work concidering the 1T size.So if speed is your thing these aren't for you.If you just want room and a large size of storage, then this Hard Drive is for you. Bought this along with a Rosewill 3.5" External Enclosure with USB 2.0 and eSata. So far it has been a great combination. The WD 1 TB Caviar Green runs at a cool temp so if you are looking to use this with an external enclosure there is no need for a fan. I have only been using this to keep my TV shows and movies on so I can't say much about using it as a hard drive for an operating system. I will say that it is 100% Mac compatible.

The hard drive works great. Like another reviewer said, it doesn't come with a SATA cable. I was kind of glad it didn't because my computer needs an extra long one to reach the motherboard. It was easy to install. It didn't come formatted or anything, so I had to do a bit of figuring to enable the drive, format it, and assign it a letter. If you're going to buy this, get one of those cables with 3 GB/s.

I got this drive for my husband for Christmas and he loves it. It was quick to install and has worked perfectly. The box had the wrong label on it, stating it was a smaller drive than the 1TB and since I'm not experienced at all with this type of stuff, I had my fingers crossed that it was indeed what I'd ordered. In the end it was the correct size drive, but it sure gave me an uneasy feeling giving it as a gift and worrying if it was not what I'd ordered.

I got two of these drives for my Diskless ReadyNAS Duo. The worked fine, with the exception that you can't incrementally add the second drive to a running ReadyNAS. It gives an error that the drive can't be initialized. Instead, you need to do a ReadyNAS factory reset while BOTH drives are installed in the ReadyNAS. When it reboots after the factory reset, it reformats/resyncs the drives (took about 5 hours), and then everything works. The ReadyNas forum has a helpful thread with the subject 'Unable to add second disk to ReadyNAS Duo' that is helpful.

I was looking for a 1 TB hard drive at a good price to put in my PC that I was upgrading to Windows 7. I found the same drive elsewhere for $69.99 and was going to order it. Before I did I checked Amazon and found it for $10 less and with free shipping. The order came in less than a week even with the free shipping. The drive itself installed with no problems and seems reasonably fast.If your buying this same drive, remember this is an OEM drive with no cables, install disks or documentation.

It appears Amazon has listened to some of the earlier complaints about the packaging of this drive. I bought two of these drives on Black Friday and they both arrived well protected inside of drive clamshells that was inside a box, and those boxes were inside a larger box with lots of protection. Yaay! And since you are supposed to review the product and not the packaging here, I'll just say that I am very happy with this drive so far. I am using two of them in a RAID array. I'll be sure to come back and change this review if I have any problems though.

I read a lot of the reviews for this drive as it was to be used in a Home Theater PC for movie / music content. I'm running Win7 and have had to reformat the drive twice in one week due to errors and also it had lost it's partition too. I've installed a lot of drives over the years but never had this much work to copy over content. As this is a secondary drive I deep formatted it a third time and it's seems to be holding up so far. As other reviewers have said it is very quiet and low heat and maybe third times a charm but for the extra $10 I wish I would have bought the Caviar Black with the longer warranty and lived with the higher noise / heat.

I purchased this drive to replace a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD5000AAKS, which by the way, was amazingly fast and quiet . This drive is just as fast, but too noisy for my taste. I prefer little to no noise from desktop and HTPC builds. This drive is better than many other drives out there, but still gives off noticeable noise. It seems to be the best, most reliable drive on the market for the money so I'm not sure what else to try. I may try the Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS but reviews indicate that it's noisy too. Overall, this is an excellent drive for general use and stays very cool.As with other reviewers, the packaging was terrible. The bare drive was shipped in an antistatic bag with two bubble packs inside a 3"x10"x10" cardboard box. The box was smashed but the drive seemed to work okay, except for the noise. Amazon should at least ship these drives in paper or peanut box filler.

I snatched up two of this WD model of hard drives. By the time I wrote this review, I've had them for more than two months and they're working as expected. What I love about them is that they're very silent and they don't run hot so easily! I really recommend this hard drive if you want a very energy efficient and reliable hard disk for your backup needs. I think I made a perfect choice and I spent only $139.98 for two of these!

As I had a lot of experience working with hard drives I'll say that wasn't the best drive for the money. I have order about 10 in the last year and about 9 of them have failed with light use. I will have to go back to hitachi drives once again. Unfortunately, the drives are too low, noisy, and fails to easily.

Pro:Low power consumption. High capacity. Quiet. Thanks for the SATA-I jumper. My motherboard (ABIT VT7) recognizes this HD right away with 1.5Gb/s speed. I should be able to use this drive in the future when I upgrade my MB.Con:I took and attached a picture of the packaging. Looks like Amazon standardize the package by putting the HD with only TWO bubble wraps in a small box. I ordered some other items so they just put this small box with other items in a big box with ONE bubble wrap.Overall, I'm not satisfied with the package. Amazon should put more bubble wraps or even foam around the HD to create more buffers. I can feel the HD is shaking around inside the small box because it lacks of bubble wrapsOther:* I bought this HD in Amazon because I saw Vinogh posted the picture and the packaging used a great foam around the HD. But, it's no longer like that now. Amazon has same poor packaging but higher price than another famous on-line retailer.* It should be a 5-star product but I reduce one because of the packaging.* The HD was made in Thailand on 04/10/2009. The HD was running through the diagnostic software in both Windows and DOS environments. No problem.

..but sometimes I do hear the clicking plates. So not as "super-silent" as reviewed here on amazon. I do not feel like commenting on packaging since amazon probably changed it already, they recieved a lot of bad critic on that. On the other side, the delivery was very fast: within only two days it arrived (I live in Mexico so I recommend this purchase.

Everything works great. One thing I didn't realized when I bought it (not at the fault of the seller but just my general ineptitude) is that you'll need a SATA cable to hook up the hard drive- it's not included. One quick drive to Best Buy and you're good to go- but if I had known earlier then I would have ordered one off Amazon. That being said, the hard drive works great, is huge, quite, and fast for what I'm using it for. I use it to dump all my pictures, videos, and mp3s on. Works great.

Bought two of these for use in a Drobo unit, then bought another two. One more for the Drobo and a backup in case one of these went south on me. First two came individually boxed in their electrostically protected bags with foam rubber above and below for protection. The next two came in the original box with which they get shipped from the manufacturer - 20 at a time - in their protective bag. So I have a huge box with some type of styrofoam with 20 slots in it and two hard drives. i.e. you won't know what kind of packing you'll get until you get them. These are Bulk/OEM so do not expect fancy packing or cables. I knew this before buying them so was not disappointed. So far the drives are working flawlessly (about a month). I hear the blacks are faster, but this is a part of my backup scheme (Time Machine on a mac) so I don't need blistering speed. I also run my iTunes library off of this backup including downloading and listening to a minimum of 2 podcasts a day and up to 4, including video podcasts, depending on the day.Drive is quiet. You can hear them when when they are running but it is a muffled sound from within the drobo.EDIT: It is now Feb 2011 and none of the drives have given me any problems. I've recently added the 4th one to my Drobo.EDIT: It is now Jan 2013 with no failures to date. I even dropped my drobo from waist high onto a hard wood floor forcing the drives to half pop out. Put it all back together and still working well. I even bought an extra drive to replace one I figured would go bad. It is still in the box.

Installation of drives into the NAS was extremely easy and I have found that using this from all of our household computers has been a snap. In fact, I'm writing this because I've decide to purchase another set and thought I'd share my experience in the process.

This is currently the best size for price break-point and is my go-to drive for most storage for the dollar.I've purchased a full dozen of these over the past year. I have not deployed them in a RAID (either software or hardware RAID) environment, so I can not speak to their performance in that respect. Using them both as extra internal and external storage for various systems, they have proven themselves robust and reliable as well as quite and have not increased the heat output above my previously smaller (750gb) drives. At the time of this review, I would advise this drive for someone looking for most storage for the buck. At least, until the 2tb WD Green drives drop in price (currently selling for about 250% the price of this 1tb drive).
