Same as other users are reporting, I have a customer who also had multiple drives of the same model go out on the exact same day. It's very suspicious - I would avoid this drive.UPDATE: It appears the reason these drives are going out is some sort of water damage / rusting on the board. Perhaps they stored them in a wet environment, and then still tried to sell them? I was able to re-gain access to one drive and retrieve a customer's personal data by cleaning away as much rust as possible (look for orange discolored spots on board contacts) using rubbing alcohol.

This particular model WD10EADS has a high failure rate. I have see 2 failures and 1 drive had only 89 hours of power up time. If you search this particular model or WD10EARS, you will see that it has a failure rate of 20% or more. Also beware the warranty is from date of manufacturer. The drive I have that just failed was only used about 2 months but the manufacturer date was 2009. Regardless of the fact that it only has 89 hours of power up time, Western Digital will not replace it. I have had excellent support with Western Digital and have many WD Drives, but I would caution you to stay away from these Green Drives. Funny, I just had a call from a friend last night because he needs to get his data from a drive he cannot read. I asked him what kind of drive is it -- you guessed Western Digital Green WD10EARS. He had installed the drive in October.Western Digital did offer a discount on an upgrade -- but get this, you have to ship the dead drive to them and pay shipping for both the dead drive and the new drive so the discount WD offers ends up costing 120% of the price of the same drive if I ordered online.

Quick summary: This OEM drive comes just like the picture shown -- no cables, no mounting brackets, just the drive alone. I installed this drive into an Acer Aspire AH340-UA230N Home Server to double my storage capacity from 1TB to 2TB, giving me data redundancy so if one drive fails, I still have all my data on the other drive. The drive worked perfectly immediately after installing it, and it continues to work well several months later, too. And at the price Amazon is selling these drives for, it's an unbelievably economical choice! Highly recommended. Read on to learn more about my particular experience and installation environment.Western Digital "Green" drives are a good choice not only for the energy they save, but also for the less heat they produce, which in turn keeps internal electronics cooler so they last longer. Even your device's fan works less hard to cool your system's internals. So "green" drives save power, keep system's running cooler, lasting longer. You do give up on performance, though, but I've not found that the WD green drives to noticeably impede my ability to work.Last summer, I bought the Acer Aspire Windows Home Server, which I highly recommend (read my review of that product to learn a LOT about that Acer server and the Windows Home Server operating system). But with only a single terabyte hard drive, there is no out-of-box data redundancy on the Acer server. I very shortly afterwards bought this Western Digital 1TB green drive, which is exactly the same as what comes inside the Acer server. Installing this WD hard drive was very easy to do if you're installing it in a server or a network-attached storage device -- you don't need any cables or hardware, just slide it into an empty bay, turn on the machine, and either automatically or manually add the drive to your shared storage pool. If you're installing this in a traditional desktop computer, though, be aware that you may need extra cables/hardware. See other customer reviews for their experience and recommendations.Inside the Acer server, this hard drive runs between 98 and 106 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the interior temperature of my home (at 78 degrees indoors, the drives get up to 106 degrees). While not the fastest drives available, the performance is very satisfactory to me. Large file movements are bottlenecked by my g-network in my home, not by the read/write speed of the WD hard disk. The drive is VERY quiet. I hear almost no noise from my server, either from the hard drives or the fan -- even when the hard drives are reading/writing.I think this drive represents a very economical value -- the current sweet spot for storage space and cost. I was considering adding a 3rd drive, and thought about getting a 1.5TB or 2TB by Western Digital, but the Amazon reviews for the 1.5TB drive gave me some misgivings, and the 2TB is still quite costly. For now and in the near future, I'll stick with adding more of these WD 1TB drives.

I've had one of these drives in a Dlink DNS321 box for almost two years now without any problem. I use it for backing up files, so it hibernates most of the time.Data transfers to and from the drive inside the NAS device occurs at about 10.3 to 11.4 MB/sec.cons:Western Digital is discontinuing this drive and its 2TB sibling, and replaceing them with cheaper "advanced format" semi-equivalents having 4KB sectors. This means that the new drives don't work well with Windows XP and many NAS devices. So why are the newer drives cheaper? I'm told that they have fewer platters, attributed to the fact that 4KB sectors store data more efficiently than the older 0.512KB sectors. Based on reviews here and elsewhere, the newer drives have higher failure rates.

About 9 months ago I got this model of hard drive included with an HP Pavilion Elite 210f Desktop PC. (Exact model number is WD10EADS-65M2B1) The drive always had peculiar hesitations, taking a long time to start any disk activity. Once started, it was reasonably fast. This behavior is consistent with reports that the Green technology is too aggressive about parking the head to save power. Then, a few days ago it began causing errors and crashes. Am seeing blue screens of death and hangs. The computer's built in diagnostics give the drive a pass, but it failed the Western Digital diagnostic software quick test. This is way too soon to be failing. Avoid this drive.

I purchased this drive to go into a Thermaltake BlacX docking enclosure to have as a backup drive on an external eSATA connection. I also had to buy the external port and attached cable to connect the Mother Board socket to the computer back plate. My mother Board has 4 SATA sockets. Worth a check before you try this solution for a backup drive if you already have 2 internal hard drives. So far the drive and enclosure works fine.At first when coping from the (int)C:\ drive to the new external drive, after creating two 495 Gig partitions and formatting them (which took about 4 hours to run BTW) the drive was extraordinarily slow. It took about 220 minutes to copy a 12 Gig folder. However form the (int)D:\ drive, the same folder took only 6 minutes. About the same when coping between the two internal drives.I had to take a look at the properties of the controllers and fix the speed settings for the PCI ATT/ATAPI Controllers. My PC shows 3 of these and the first Primary controller was set to PIO transfer rate. This is the slowest rate possible and is normally auto set when the Controller received Busy/Timeouts back from the channel. My assumption is that happened when I first hung the new drive on the system and it was not prepped/formatted.The fix is easy, just right click on "My Computer", select "Manage", then "Device Manager", and open up the "IDE ATT/ATAPI Controllers", There were 3 listed on my Win-XP PC. Two Primary and a Secondary. Open up each controller and select the top tab "Advanced Settings". Check to see what the "Current Transfer Mode" window is set at. It should say "DMA if available" and "Ultra DMA Mode 5" or 2.If it says "PIO Only" mode, then the transfer rate has been set to the slowest possible speed. To solve this, Right click on the errant Controller and select "Uninstall". You will then be prompted to Reboot. The controller will be reset to the maximum speed again and following another prompted Reboot. After the controller is found and reinstalled, check that it says "DMA if available" and "Ultra DMA Mode 5" or 2.The speeds will then be up to snuff :)This is an excellent solution for keeping backups of your important data on another device with good speed and integrity.I thoroughly recommend it.

Well, I've bought Western Digital drives for a few years now, since Maxtor turned to crap. I had several of those fail in a short amount of time and switched to Western Digital. Now I had a RAID array with 5 250MB drives, one of them failed after less than a year. I set up a new RAID array with 3 1TB drives, and two of them failed at the about the same time; before I could replace the failed one. So much for redundancy! Even if I'd mirrored those 2 drives, I'd lost my data. Luckily I also "ghost" to an external hard drive once a week, So I only lost 3 or 4 days worth of data. Looks like I'm going to Seagate. And when they turn out to be crap, I don't know where I'll go next. Maybe RAID 6. Boy..., this is frustrating. So in summary, don't buy these things.Oh, for all of you that say heat was an issue, well, you may be correct; however, I ensured there was a free bay with hard drive fans between each drive. What else would you suggest, a refrigeration unit? Liquid Nitrogen. It's not heat, and if it is, well it sure isn't for my lack of trying.

I use a 320GB drive from 3 years ago as my main drive (still going strong) and this new one as a media backup drive.I first ordered this drive almost a year ago. It seemed to be working great for about three months when my computer started to hang at random times. I then got IO errors from the drive and all kinds of funky error messages, at which time the drive was no longer responding in Windows. After running diagnostics and tons of testing I figured it was just a bad drive, so I RMA'd it with Western Digital. The RMA process wasn't horrible - they charge the cost of the drive and then send you a new drive, and (supposedly) upon receipt of the broken drive, they reimburse that cost. I am still waiting for that reimbursement, but that's a separate issue.I received the second drive two weeks ago. Installed the same as my previous (broken) drive - essentially as a second hard drive. All was well and working normally until last night when I had the exact same issues. My computer started to hang for 5-10 seconds at a time and eventually became unresponsive. It's most definitely the drive, because when it's not being used, my machine can run for weeks at a time without a restart.I'm not even going to bother to RMA this second drive. It might be some weird incompatibility with my motherboard, but I don't think so as the first drive worked great for a few months and this second one had no problems for at least two weeks...

I use it to hold my music and my movies, and it serves that purpose beautifully. I highly recommend this drive to anyone needing an extra TB to hold their media, although I don't know how it would perform under strenuous circumstances, or someone needing blazing fast access or read/write times. For the average home user, I can't imagine how this HDD would be disappointing.

I have purchased several of these drives to use in my Drobo: Data Robotics Drobo 4-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800 SATA Storage Array DR04DD10. I have not had any problems with the drives for this purpose. All drives arrived in good, working condition and were very easy to setup. I have had these drives for over a year with no problem.I use the Drobo as a Backup solution, so speed is not my primary concern. It does seem to respond more slowly than other single-drive firewire devices that I have attached. This is only typically a problem when I'm using the Drobo after not using it for a while. I assume it may be due to the power saving features built into this drive. But, perhaps it's something to do with the Drobo. I don't want to give either item a bad reputation since I'm not sure which is the culprit. However, for backup use, this combination is perfect.A side note about my system. I am using a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. My other external drive is a WD Caviar Black:Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS in an Icy Dock Enclosure. The model I have was replaced with this one: ICY DOCK USB & 1394 Single Bay Ext Hard Drive. I have used several of these enclosures and have great success with each one that I've used. I actually just purchased one of the newer Icy Dock enclosures, so I will write a review about it after I have used it for a while.

For those that don't know why you want a low-power drive:It's not just for the environment or your electricity bill--those are just added bonuses. A hard drive can generate a lot of heat inside of your system. This means that (a) your fans will have to blow faster (and thus your computer gets significantly louder), but also that the rest of your computer (CPU, graphics card, etc) are operating at a higher heat. This means that they are running at a lower efficiency rate, as well as with an increased risk of failure. Long story short, your computer will run quieter, faster, and more efficiently, and will also last longer with fewer failures. This particular drive runs faster than a lot of low-power drives, and has been incredibly reliable. It's 7200 rpm and 32mb cache are rather good specs, especially compared to other drives out there--make sure you check those two specs before you buy! The price also cannot be beat.It unfortunately doesn't come with any cables, so I would strongly suggest getting this (as I did): Cables Unlimited Serial ATA Cable Kit. It comes with both the sata connector for your motherboard as well as a power adapter to power your drive from a 4-pin molex cable from your power supply.----Update regarding WD's changed rpm specs----WD has changed the specs on the drive since my last review, from 7200rpm to "IntelliPower," and many other websites speculate as to what that exactly means. Some say it runs closer to 5400rpm, other say it's a variable rate between 5400 and 7200. I don't know what it is, but I did want to weigh in on performance.I also have a 5400rpm drive in the same machine, and a proper 7200rpm drive in another machine. This green drive definitely outperforms the 5400 drive, and I personally do not notice the difference between this and the other 7200rpm drive when running Acronis backup or Photoshop/Gigapixel work. Apparently this has to do with the increased density of the plates used in the drive, although I do not know enough to weigh in scientifically on this. Of course I doubt that performance is comparable to the WD Black drives, but for normal use this drive will not be a "slow-down factor" like other 5400rpm drives tend to be.The rest of my review about power consumption and temperature still stands, and I would also like to add that it's great with fanless external enclosures, which often tend to generate excess heat with higher-power drives.

I bought two of these drives to pair up with my Data Robotics Drobo purchase. Within 3 weeks of purchase not just one but the two drives went out the same day giving me no time to replace the failed drive. I went through the diagnostic process with Drobo support (which they were really great because they really spent time with me trying to figure out the problem) and they confirmed that it was a problem from the drive.I took it to several data recovery labs to get the best offer. I knew going this route would be expensive either way exceeding $2,000. The point I wanted to make was the reaction I got from not just one but all of the specialists when they found out the drives were Western Digital.Apparently everyone in the IT world or at least 6 different data recovery specialists felt iffy about the relaibilty and the tech support provided by Western Digital. They warned me about buying WD drives in the future. They suggest Hitachi, Samsung, or Fujistu. The tech support from WD was just awful too. I couldn't believe how inconsiderate they are, I have proof from Amazon of Date of purchase and how they failed within 3 weeks of purchase, as well as diagnostic files from Drobo and the Data Recovery specialists. I wanted to keep my drives for when I could afford the data recovery procedure. I did not trust just giving the drives back either since I have tax information on the drives and other documents that are technically recoverable. I do not know what the procedure is of Western Digital and what they do with the drives that are mailed back to them. They would not offer to do anything for me.I am never buying a western digital drive again. Good luck to you guys with your data. And remember to back up in separate areas.

I bought one of these for my home theater pc for three main reasons as follows...It's quiet. Important for a HTPC. I have 4 PCs, and my gaming rig has enough cooling it's practically a wind tunnel. Not quiet. For an HTPC, you want silence for obvious reasons. Minimal moving parts are possible to lessen sound(fanless cooling systems, case heat dispersion via alluminum chassis, SSDs), but realistically for the higher data storage solid states aren't there yet from an economical perspective. Yet.It has low power consumption. For obvious reasons, this is nice. Honestly the green many people talk about isn't my main concern. The green in my pocket is. If it saves $2 a month for a year, that's $24 dollars a year savings my other drives didn't give me. Maybe my PSU will last longer because of it as well. It isn't a speed demon, but it doesn't have to be. It holds my media, and it isn't there for gaming. It has enough storage for the system I'm installing it in. 1TB is enough for what I'm using it for. When I don't want to access another PC through the network, what I want is usually there. Lossless audio and other high bitrate back ups take up a lot of space. If you've ever backed up a vinyl collection, you know what I mean.If those are the main needs for your system, then it's only $85 or so right now. I feel it was a good purchase. As a side note for new PC users--if this is the first HDD you are adding to an already existing system, remember it's just the drive. Buy a SATA or SATA II cable if you don't have an extra one lying around. And don't forget to set it all up in Disk Management after installing it in your box(you won't see it in My Computer as no partitions are set on most OEM drives).

Contacted amazon's customer service and rep arranged for a second HDD to be shipped to me and also emailed a return shipping label. Received the 2nd HDD and again it was a WD 500GB HDD. Contacted amazon cust serv again and was told to wait a week and to reorder the 1TB green HDD again. Was emailed a 2nd return shipping label. I waited and then ordered the 1TB green HDD again and FINALLY received the correct 1TB green HDD. Handling both incorrect drives and having to ship them back was so time consuming not to mention the time and gas needed to ship the incorrect items back!Amazon's customer service and return policy are great and I will continue to buy from amazon because of both. BUT amazon really needs to investigate their shipping department accuracy. Shipping TWO incorrect HDDs is inexcusable. This is the second time that I received an incorrect item from amazon. Amazon must be losing a lot of money with shipping charges both ways for incorrect items shipped. I would have given 1 star but the correct drive I finally received works fine so gave 3 stars.

Last year the Seagate hard drive almost killed me by the famous firework problem. From that time I bought this one and won't tough Seagate anymore.WD never failed me, this green drive worked as a backup drive on my desktop without any problem.

This review is purely about the packaging, and ... yes, before someone states that I have "no right" to reduce the overall item product rating by complaining about something other than the item itself, I would suggest you try estimating the life of a hard drive that barely was COVERED let alone protected from dropping stresses or from hitting against other items in the shipping container! Anyway I've just added the new Packaging attribute to this review page and I suggest those of you who have ACTUALLY ORDERED/RECEIVED this item from Amazon (or are thinking about doing so) pay close attention to the difference between the item ratings and that rating. Likely Amazon will remove this attribute before long but at least you now have the chance to see what you're letting yourself in for.(Updated)Just to clarify something: the customer image, at the top of the product page, labelled as being from Vinodh Ramasubramanian, which shows a much higher quality of packaging is NOT what is being used by Amazon, at least not any more. I don't know when that image was submitted, although I have to assume it was not recent. I wish the drives I ordered had been supplied in packaging such as that. Then at least they'd have had a chance to survive the equally feeble attempt by Amazon at using viable shipping container packaging - those inflated air bubble strips are useless at preventing items from hitting against each other and often also swell and burst (sometimes even rupturing the shipping container itself) when the package is sent to a higher altitude (like here in the mountain states).

WD Has made this drive to meet eyes with select group of 'us' that prefer a low power consumption storage drive that produces less heat for a VERY VERY good external hard drive, this drive is PERFECT for that.WD Has 3 types of drives.Blue: Performance and reliability for everyday computing.Green: Cool, quiet, eco-friendly.Black: Maximum performance for power computing. Now that we have that sorted out those who give low ratings because this is not the 'best' boot drive or the fastest performance drive, PLEASE note that you are giving a device a low rating for doing exactly what IT is advertised to do.Now... Is this drive for you?A) Low power NAS or External HarddriveB) Eco-Green friendlyC) Massive storage for plenty of Movies/Pictures/Games___________What do I use this drive for?I use this drive with an Antec MX-1 External enclosure connected with E-Sata and am VERY happy with the performance it provides while at the same time quiet, low heat generation and reliable, this drive has not failed me and once again WD has not let me down. I play games such as NFS-Shift/World of Warcraft/Aion from this drive also watch .avi video's from it and never once seen a glitch, lack of performance or a hick'up. If this is what you are looking for you will not be disappointed and always nice to say "My computer is designed around low power consumption eco-friendly technology" when someone complains about you leaving your computer on all night ;)Good luck Amazon shoppers.Long live Amazon!!

I have 4 drives on my Mac Pro and made the mistake of adding this one in my last drive for my photography work. Sure enough 6 months later the drive started failing and I had to buy special software to retrieve my photos on this drive from the corrupt areas. Not a good investment.

I was trying to make a RAID 5 with 4 X 1TB HD.In fairness to WD I must emphasize the fact that MBR (Master Boot Record, before Win Vista)is not made for such a big storage, and this may be part of the problem, but I do not think that this is the main one.And this is not well published!! It took me 2 months to find this out.Beware if you have Win XP 32 bits and want to do the same.Out of the 4X1Tb HD, 2 went dead! Even using the utility for re-writing 0's did not work (WD data life diagnostic tool). Hence if it were just a logical problem, it should have solved it.I got 2 replacement disks. Again one failed to the same level. In the meantime in another PC, a 500Gb WD HD also suddenly died and had to be replaced (one out of three). So out of 3X500 Gb, one died, and out of 6X1Tb, 3 died. Again, I may have inadvertently over-stressed them (not the 500 Mb though). Yet I have never ever faced anything like this. I am used to Seagate's and Maxtor's. To date I have had one major failure, in 20 years!!! Thank to WD the record has been quite amended.I must recognised that I did not purchase this HD on Amazon. But since I do use Amazon for many other Items, I did check the reviews and that is what influenced my choice, and also the fact that Seagate's HD had not such a good appraisal. Finally, although it is not relevant to Amazon's customers, the after sale service in Middle-East is non existent. As compare to an excellent one with Seagate, there is no doubt that I will rather twist my arm rather than purchasing anymore WD product.Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, SATA II WD10EADS

I bought this drive a little over a year ago and it is still cranking. I use it in a media center PC that accesses it constantly for show recordings and DVR style playback. It is quiet, cool, and inexpensive. Since it has been past the 1 year infant mortality time period it looks like I have this one for the long haul.If you are looking for a drive with good speed, low temperature, low noise, and inexpensive, then this is a good buy for you.

I caught the Windows Home Server bug and am using this in an HP MediaSmart Home Server. These servers have hot-swappable drive trays which have good airflow but the drives mount really closely on top of each other. This makes heat my main concern. I use the Green Power drives because they generate much less heat and consume less power than regular drives. It's important to remember that these drives do not vary their speed, but different batches of the same model do vary their spindle speed. The drives are tested and are pre-set at the factory to a stable balance of speed, power consumption, and heat production. These newer models have 32 megabytes of cache memory which makes them great for online storage. Previous models have smaller cache and aren't so well-suited for a server that is on a gigabit speed network like mine where the network can be faster than the drive, but the larger cache in this model is a great boon.I highly recommend the GreenPower drives and this is the state of the art for Windows Home Server folks. I think it's necessary to point out that the WD GreenPower drives have similar power, heat, and performance to Samsung's F1 drives, so make sure you check those out for your server needs as well.

I recieved my new drive, formatted and partitioned it, used the WD version of Acronis and mirrored the OEM Caviar SE 16 WD. After installing in my Media Center Tower, you can hear the drive working! It is the noisiest drive I have ever heard! I have owned Seagate, WD and Hitachi drives, and if this is the quietest drive around, I would really hate to hear the loudest. I wish I knew if it was becasue of it being a greeny, I have only owned WD SE or Blacks before. I was really hoping to notice an increase in speed, going from a 16mb 7200 drive to this 32MB variable speed, but havent so far. I did really appreciate the Acronis from the web site, one click cloning, super cool that! The price was certainly right, and the fact I could get one right away; some of the other sites, didn't have any good drives in stock, so gettting this drive three calendar days after ordering was a definate plus, box had a plastic holder that cupped the drive at both ends, seemed to protect the drive fairly well. I just wish the thing wasn't so darn noisy.

I got this drive specifically to use in my Antec MX-100 3.5-Inch USB Aluminum Enclosure. Both came highly recommended by reviewers. The enclosure is passively cooled, so I was very interested in the lower heat generation of this unit. And it does run pretty cool.So far I've been very happy with this unit. I don't use my external drive more than a few times a month, but I haven't had any problems. It seems just as speedy as my other external drive. The capacity for the price was a very good deal and I've had pretty good experiences with Western Digital hard drives. My only concern, the Western Digital Green drives are built to be more energy efficient than most other drives. From what I've read, they do this by parking their drive heads more often than other hard drives. This scares me a little, because stopping and starting tends to cause more wear and tear on mechanical parts. I'd be a little hesitant to use one of these as my main drive inside my computer, until I saw some long term reports on lifespan.
