When my XP OS cratered, I decided to get a new HDD and use the old for storage. So, looking for deals, I saw this and said, "Yup, this'll do!" My previous HDD was a 500G, so now I have lots more space. I had read articles/reviews about insufficient packaging (not necessarily about this item), but that wasn't the case here. It was installed in minutes...now I just have to give it the test of time. Oh, and it arrived in a timely manner, as usual. I wish I had need for another one, I would have bought two!

I've purchased three of these drives over the last year, one is installed inside a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-Core, the other two in a Vantec NexStar MX. I do video editing and graphics arts, and have a large library of video, stock photographs, and music files spread over 12 TB of drives that are nearly filled to the brim. The three Western Digital drives have worked perfectly in tandem with the nine IBM and Hitachi drives.These drives are an excellent value.

This is a great hard drive, very easy to physically install. The only problem I had with this drive was getting Windows XP to install on the drive. Due to the Advanced Formatting WD uses the only way I could get the drive to install Windows XP was to have the XP set-up program format the drive (not using the quick format option). I tried formatting the drive using WD Advanced format software but XP would not load. However, after installing XP on the drive I was able to use WD Advanced Format software to optimize the drive for XP. If you buy this drive and plan on installing XP just be sure to let XP set-up do the formatting and then optimize it after XP installs.

Put this in a home server uploading all of my movies, will have to add another later, and it will be the same as this one because there has been no problems. I am using this on a Windows XP computer and you must install service pack 2 for it to work properly though

Good idea... Western Digital bacame mediocre quality over last decade. The drive worked for one month before it died in extrenal enclosure. If you think this was glitch and perhaps one piece then you think the same i initially tought. however thi is my third WD drive in different enclosure working contgnously. All three died over last months.Simply put WD does not offer any reliable drive that could be used for contignuous backups. I used to love WD dard drives as built number of PCs using them, but not anymore. Also they seem to heat up like old Maxtors. They become worse quality year after year.I am switching to Samsung and Hitachi for comparisons. I need full time incremental backups running on USB reliably for my Mac computers (Time Machine).I wish WD was really conducting their reliablity tests so MTBF is not a lie on paper for some who cannot verify it - consumers.

WD is a good quality drive manufacturer with a good rating for longevity (in my opinion). I have order dozens of these drives and the last order had one (1) of the two (2) DOA. It happens. As with all online orders, if it's mission critical always buy two. You can always use a spare or return it once you are up and running. At this cost, just mirror the drives and save headache in the long term.

This product did not install and will not install, I discovered, unless there is an installation disk. Windows XP cannot be installed without one. Western digital refuses to provide the disk or any remedy. I never was able to reach a human and their web support ignores the problem. Every OS I tried (Vista, Windows XP) in which I tried a clean installation asked for the manufacturer's installation disk. Your dead without it. Avoid this product for a clean installation.

Large capacity, good price, quiet operation, and reduced power consumption are all good reasons to buy this drive. Arrived well packed, installed easily, formatted without any errors, and is running quietly.

I purchased this hard drive when I was building my new computer.Its been over 3 months not even a hiccup in performance.If your looking for just a normal 1TB hard drive, you should get this.

Великолепно

I installed this in a Windows- Vista machine to replace a blown hard drive. It started right up, and ran just fine. I've had one in my Windows Home Server for over a year, and that one continues to run well. Seems like a great drive at this price.

I've had this for 1 month now and it works great. I only use it for media storage. You couldn't game or edit video on it because it's too slow.The only con I can think of is when I installed it via sata, I had to actually had to boot from my Windows 7 install disk and format the drive in order for Windows to see it. But after I did that, it appeared next to my C drive and works great. And it shipped VERY fast!

It works, I can't comment on it's speed because I'm using a pci card since my computer doesn't have a sata port.At first I thought it wasn't working, but you just have to format it with the utility from wdc.com. The utility can also clone hard drives, so it was a plus for me.It's my first sata drive so I don't have much to compare it to, but it is faster than my old ide drive even with the pci card.

I purchased two of these drives to expand my backup storage in a D-Link DNS-323 NAS device. Arrived very quickly, easy to install, however when I tried to configure received an error message from my NAS software. Having done all of the usual upgrade firmware etc I then started to research and found that these drives are explicitly NOT supported in NAS devices by Western Digital. So all I ended up with is two extra drives for my PC and now need to buy different drives to provide more backup storage

This is a great budget drive. We picked up a bunch of these to use for general storage. They are probably a bit slow to use as a system boot drive, but if you just need extra storage on your PC, this will do the trick.We also used a bunch of them in a Windows Home Server. *NOTE* If you use these or any Western Digital Green drives in a Windows Home Server, you must set the jumper on the drive to disable advanced format features. These features are not compatible with home server, xp, server 2003, etc. and can cause data corruption or data loss.Other than the small caveat of warning, this is a great drive for the price. Recommended.

I recently upgraded the drive in my iMac (which compared to a PC is a little tougher) and it works great! Plenty fast and very quiet. I did a quick format with Disk Utility and then restored my old files with Time Machine. No complaints.

This is the third time I have purchased this exact item. I have replaced the drive in my iMac and I use two with an external hard drive docking station (the toaster looking item). It's very fast and reliable. When taken care of well, this brand should leave you no problems. I use them for my time machine capsules with OS X and store a lot of Canon 7D and RED media on them for video editing. I recommend the drive to anyone looking to get a great price along with reliability.

Installed hardware but didn't show up as a drive in My Computer (Windows XP 32 bit). Showed up in bios fine and WD software that I downloaded. Finally read in a forum that I need to go into Disk Management and format the drive. After doing that it showed up in My Computer with a letter drive and it works fine. I hoping my streak of good luck with WD drives will continue. I would also consider Seagate drives, definitely not Maxtor.

I got this a month ago and so far it hasn't given me any problems. It works very well and the speed is pretty good.the only gripe I have about this is that sometimes it lags a little and the clicking sound the disk makes when I open files from it. For example, if I open up the files in the 1TB drive, sometimes it'll take 4-5 seconds for the drive to register that its being opened and there will be clicking noises. I'm not sure why that happens but its not really that big of a deal. Other than that, it is still a very great drive and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a budget HD.

I needed more storage and backup capacity for my home and business network, so I bought 2 of these to install in a DLink Network Storage device (DNS 323). Setup was a breeze, and they are operating flawlessly. These are a great investment.

Western Digital 1 TB has problems built into it. Check the official web site to better understand what the problem is or google it. I personally am not 100% satisfied. Would I buy another...NO!In a nut shell the drive falls asleep. Yes it falls asleep. According to WD it has built in relocating software. After leaving my computer on over nite for example, I come back to try and access files in that drive and it takes a good 30 to 45 sec to respond. Dont know maybe the built in software is the cause. Thats the worst of the problems with it, I HOPE!!! Googling it I found others with similar problems or worse. Some were told by WD their drive is spiraling toward a meltdown.It is 1TB and for that I'm happy.Good Luck.Will be contacting WD, hopefully the drive can be replaced.

Interesting that amazon is the only place on the planet that advertises this drive at 7200 rpm. Everywhere else it's a 5400. And you have to really dig for the specs no matter where you look.

Bought this drive to expand my HD Tivo after the external WD drive died. Used the Windows version of the Tivo drive copy tool to move the current working image to this drive.Seems like it might be a little slower in response to deleting viewed programs, but I have not had any other problems or concerns. Seems to be quiet enough for me. I don't notice any more noise than the standard Tivo drive.I have had it installed for about a month now and not had a single problem. I have no problem recommending this drive to anyone who wants to upgrade their HD Tivo box.

I use this as a backup drive for my iMac. I use it with a dock so I can switch out drives. Overall the noise level is much lower than my Seagate drive and the speed is reasonable. The unit was packed very well and I feel comfortable shipping data on drives in this packaging. Since the price is reasonable and it seems to be reliable I would purchase this again.

I bought two of these drives for my Dell Dimension E520 in December 2009. I swapped out a single 250GB hard drive for two of these drives and set it up as a RAID 1 (mirror) configuration and did a clean Windows 7 install. My computer system is on 24/7/365 and I have not had a single problem with these drives. I think I paid around $80 each in December so the current gold box deal is a great price.The drives are fast enough for me. My system seems just as quick as when I did the clean install, but I am currently only using about 10% of the 1TB.If your system supports mirroring do yourself a favor and buy two of these drives. $60 is a small price to pay for protecting 1TB of data.
