My company has now bought about 16 of these drives to use in both Newertech and BlackX Hard Drive Docks. They seem to work beautifully. No complaints over the past year plus. In addition, the individual drive packaging is very secure, which I guess is needed since Amazon seems sloppily package these drives together for shipment.

The upgrade possibilities for a G5 iMac are limited. One very effective way to enhance performance is with a much larger capacity hard drive. Especially, in my case since I am dealing with a very large number of large files of photo negative scans. A larger hard drive is probably also the most cost effective upgrade.The installation was very simple, I have done a number, and was very quick, about five minutes. I have also just now upgraded to OS X 10.5 which will help also.

First I tried a WD black to replace my HP All in one PC hard drive and while fast is was very loud, my wife said it must go. I agreed. In goes th green, and this this is SILENT. A hair slower, but all around a perfect fit for an "All in one" PC with no real case and general home use. It also runs drastically cooler than the black drive.If you have a small case, use the Green drive so you dont hear it working and know it wont heat things up inside the limited air space "case". If you have a large case, the black is where its at cause you'll probably never hear it and you have the air flow to cool it.Both drives are leaps and bounds better the Seagate drives! Seagate is the ONLY brand to fail me in over 20 years of working with multiple PC's. Even when I ran a PC repair business for 5 years, I never saw a WD drive actually fail to at least retrive data. Seagate got 3 strikes and now their out!

Western Digital provides great utility software. Just download it from their site and go to work. It AUTOMATICALLY clones your old hard drive to the new hard drive. This means that it copies all your programs and files and permissions from one hard drive to the next. This is not like the old days where you had to manually copy all your files to the new disk and manually reinstall all your programs (if you could find where you left the activation codes). BTW . . . it is still a good idea to backup your old files before running the cloning operation, in case something goes wrong.

If you are installing XP from scratch make sure you have an install version with SP2 on it already or you will only see 127gb. I prefer having a jumper switch on 7,8 pins over having to have an installation disk with SP2 on it.

I purchased the Western Digital Caviar Green 640 GB hard drive in March. I run Windows XP. I have had to reformat this drive FOUR times since then. Every so often, the computer will randomly start running at about 1/20th of its normal speed. No explanation whatsoever. The hard drive light is going berserk. I've run the "WD Align" and it says that the drive's new 4k sectors are "aligned" properly to work in Windows XP (a process that takes between 15 minutes and 8 hours by the way, depending on how your drive is partitioned by the way).This drive has been nothing but a giant headache. I would return it but the 30 day return period is over.I just ordered a different brand of drive and will try again. I will get extreme enjoyment out of destroying the Western Digital Green with a sledgehammer and dropping it in a recycle bin.Update (11/10): I made this a secondary backup drive and cloned another drive to it. I tried to use Acronis Trueimage to clone the new drive to the old drive to make an exact copy of the main drive. This took about six tries (Acronis said it failed due to (possibly) poor media quality). I have spent hours and hours trying to make this drive work even as a backup and I am regretting not taking a sledgehammer to it yet. stay tuned.

I received the WD 1 TB Caviar in perfect condition as described. It did not have any instructions that it had to b formated and after I determained that formating was required everything went good for the installation. I am very satisfied with the drive with such large cap. The price was very good. I would recommend it to anyone.

I bought this to install XP with sp1, set jumpers to pin 7 and 8, and the moment i started installing system drivers, rebooted the HD (hard drive) went wacko on me (blue screen) with unmountable boot volume, so i did the XP recovery,did chkdsk /r, no good, did fixboot (restart first) no good and a few others no good, all i did was waste tons of my saturday playing with this drive with XP ... not sure how good this is on windows 7, but for XP i would try to avoid it and buy the cheaper barracuda drive instead.update : works great on win7 (avoid on XP), bought 2 more of this green HDD...

The reviews of this drive were really good and I had high expectations prior to purchasing this drive - especially since for the most part I had good experience with WD drives.However, it seems I was very unlucky with this one.The first drive I purchased crashed within a few days and the replacement started to show bad sectors and fail SMART data tests after about a month of usage.The service of WD was quite good and the turn-around to receive a new drive was very quick. WD offers the option of sending a replacement drive prior to receiving the defective one which is very comfortable. However, having two drives fail in such a short time frame is just inexcusable.

Avoid these drives like plague as they have high failure rate. I have two of them and one failed in less that 12 months with 750MB data on it after using only for backups.Luckily the drive was under warranty, but WD requires customer to pay for shipping to replace their defective product. To add insult to injury the replacement was a refurbished drive which I fully expect fail even sooner than the brand new one.Do not be swayed by the low price of these drives as you will have to buy two and back often. Also save your coins for shipping charges and pray drive fails within warranty period otherway you are left with a heavy paperweight. Installation straight forward. Noise level is low but not completely quiet. Speed is ok. Package is oem no frills, not pamphlets, jumpers hardware etc. Would not recommend for a novice especially if jumper pins are needed. All in all good bang for the buck.

I needed an additional hard drive in my Mac Pro, and wanted one that was green and quiet, as I do a lot of audio recording. This one works great so far! I've only had it a few weeks, so it's too early to give it 5 stars. But if it stays reliable then I would....

This is a great drive for the price! 1TB@7200rpm, for under $60! Can't be beat. OK, so it's not the speediest of drives out there when compared to a SSD, but it holds its' own against all the much more expensive models. My system is running it at UDMA6, and I've purchased a second one to upgrade to a RAID array which should speed up times a bit more. I've also put this drive in other builds I've done recently, and everyone is happy with the speed and space. Windows Vista and 7 both recognize it right out of the box, no drivers to fiddle with. Couldn't be easier. So if you're like me and want great value without really sacrificing much, then this drive fits the bill nicely.

I purchased one of these last year to add additional storage for a ton of additional data. It was intended to be a back-up drive, since the 500GB drive that already came with the system was sufficient, but ended up becoming regularly used because it's that reliable. Quiet, efficient, not a terrible conversion of electricity to heat when compared to the OEM drive already present, able to quickly have data pulled across a wireless network in my home, etc. So, I moved off all of the regularly-used data, freeing up my 500GB drive to exclusively contain the ever-the-resource-hog O.S. and installed programs, to be regularly scanned for problems before I insert the data onto the 1TB drive. An excellent purchase, caught on sale last year at just under $89 (I think). Highly recommended.

Now that I've got all this space, even though it's not even half full yet.... I keep eyeballing the 2TB drives, and am trying to rationalize with myself that I need more space. WD all the way for me.... ACTUAL REVIEW:So far, so good. I've had this HDD for a while now and boy is this thing great. I'm sure there are differences between the 3 drives in speeds. I also have a caviar blue drive, but this one seems plenty fast for what I use it for. It supposedly takes less electricity, which is a plus for me as I look for 3 things in PC components: Price, Efficiency, Reliability. All of which, this drive has.

Ah, I searched and searched for a replacement hard drive for my Tivo HD and cam across this drive. I installed it and after almost losing all my information on my Tivo because of some issues with understanding the directions and setup, it has worked flawlessly. It is extremely quiet and efficient so far and have no regrets. I executed the wdidle.exe program in order to turn off the parking and have had no problems with the Tivo hanging. If you want something that'll certainly work with your Tivo HD, this is the drive for you. You can't go larger as Tivo HD are limited to just over 1 TB, unless you want to really mess with system. This is the easiest way to go.

Notice that you can't find the speed of the drive ANYWHERE in the description... this is not a good sign. All I hear about this drive is how slow it is as a main drive. If you just need a slave data backup drive, then this works on a price point basis.Jesse

What can I say about this drive. Simple, it just works. I installed this HD as a backup drive on my new HP computer system in just a few minutes. Ironically, when I opened my computer case to install it I was surprised to find that my primary drive was also a Western Digital Caviar Green SATA 1TB drive. If it's good enough for HP to install in their higher end systems, I figure it's good enough for me too.One word of caution that has been mentioned in other reviews. This is not a consumer package drive. It comes with the drive and nothing else. That means you need a SATA cable and an open power connector in your system in order to hook it up. You also need 4 mounting screws. It also comes with no directions so you need to know how to set it up on your own. This is very easy to do using the Windows 7 disk management program but on Windows XP systems it may take a bit more tinkering to get it up and running.The drive performs well, it is VERY quiet as well. A good drive at a great price. I recommend it.

quick, silent, low power and can keep the loading going even when she gets a bit warm with no faults.(sits just above and right of my sli video card setup so it gets warmer than usual). i read the other reviews before purchasing, and i have yet to see any of the cons of this product

its best cuz 64mb cache and 1tb for 60$, very cheap and its a really good HDD, i had a WD caviar blue 160gb and changed to this one, anyways i think im not gettin it full, before it gets broken or so. but i still like it =)

Maybe is just my bad luck, but this WD drive after installed 2 months ago, begin making intermittent loud and strange noises(Like the noise that a boat's offboard motor do), but works, In the beginning of this 2011, a clicking noise begin and the computer goes super slow, I download datalife tools, but the program hangup or halts after a while. Then suddenly the drive works again. But I will not tempt my luck with my data. I Already order another brand. I Hope my data survive while the other drive arrives.

I have a dual boot between OpenSuse 11.3 and WinXP Pro sp3 on this drive. I rec'd this drive bare bones. It would have been nice to at least get a jumper pin - such as the case for WinXP when going for a single partition. The price I paid was low enough, so that's not a real issue.Altogether, the actual space on this drive is 931GB, if noone has said this already. Once again, not a real issue.Installation in the case was also easy enough, but I did have to provide my own screws, not a real issue.The only thing that kind of worries me is that there seems to be some drag time in the GUIs, both linux and windows. I wish I knew what was causing that. At the moment, I'm using a different HD in the same PC, but I experience no drag time in the GUIs. What to do?

These are NOT the drives you're looking for if you're buiding a RAID array. WD purposely cripples consumer-level drives so they don't play nice with RAID arrays.Aside from error correction issues (where drives can be dropped from the array because they don't respond fast enough), these drives also have power saving features that park the drive heads after only a few seconds of inactivity. This causes the drives to go to sleep and wake up every 12 seconds or so, which will contribute to a premature drive failure.There is a workaround that I chose to utilize, but that is in no way supported by WD. Google around for an utility called WDIDLE3 which allows you to disable the power saving feature, as well as tweak the error-correction setting. It's a DOS utility, so you will have to create a bootable DOS CD or USB stick.

These drives just pop in place and begin to do their job. No extra parts or papers that have to be thrown away. At this point, these 1 TB drives are my standard. They hit the sweet spot in terms of price/performance.

The first computer would not recognise this new hard drive. I was about to use it as an external hard drive for storage, but decided to try it in another computer, in which it works very well. I have had this issue with other computer products, but this is the first time I see this happen to a hard drive. Runs cool and quietly.

I don't normally write reviews, but I saw some bad reviews from people who (from what it seemed like) have no idea what they're doing. You don't just plug in an internal harddrive, and expect it to work right away. You have to go through device management and format it first OR download the correct drivers. That's why it's "not recognized".Anyway, it works great and it's super fast. Loooove it!

I purchased this drive to replace the drive in my Wife's computer that was running out of space. The PC was running Windows 7 and the drive being replaced was a WD3200KS 7200RPM drive.PC the drive went into: Stock Intel Q6600, Gigabyte GA-EP45-D3SL, 8GB DDR2, and a ATI HD4870.The Windows install wasn't that old and I didn't really want to mess with getting her all her stuff back so I used a Clonezilla Live CD to clone the old drive to the new one. I then booted straight into Windows 7 off the new drive. Windows asked me to restart so I did and the system was up and running without incident. I then went into the Windows 7 disk manager and extended the partition to fill the whole drive.Knowing this was an Advanced Format drive but unsure if the alignment would be correct due to the cloning, I downloaded the bootable image for the align utility from the Western Digital site and burned it to a CD. I ran the utility and it indicated that the partition was aligned correctly and there was nothing that needed to be done.The old drive showed as a 5.4 and the new one as a 5.9 on the Windows Experience Index. I didn't think that was too bad coming from an older 7200 RPM drive to this. I was a little worried it would be slower but that isn't the case. I haven't personally used the PC enough myself to know but my wife says she notices it is a bit faster and things are quicker to load.This drive for me was a worthwhile upgrade and money well spent to this point. Only time will tell about the reliability as with any drive.

Used these as a replacement drives on my media center pc and so far so good. keep in mind tho if you are using windows 7 and you use wd's software to clone from your old drive to the new one you'll find your automatic updates will no-longer work on windows 7

When my XP OS cratered, I decided to get a new HDD and use the old for storage. So, looking for deals, I saw this and said, "Yup, this'll do!" My previous HDD was a 500G, so now I have lots more space. I had read articles/reviews about insufficient packaging (not necessarily about this item), but that wasn't the case here. It was installed in minutes...now I just have to give it the test of time. Oh, and it arrived in a timely manner, as usual. I wish I had need for another one, I would have bought two!

I've purchased three of these drives over the last year, one is installed inside a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-Core, the other two in a Vantec NexStar MX. I do video editing and graphics arts, and have a large library of video, stock photographs, and music files spread over 12 TB of drives that are nearly filled to the brim. The three Western Digital drives have worked perfectly in tandem with the nine IBM and Hitachi drives.These drives are an excellent value.

This is a great hard drive, very easy to physically install. The only problem I had with this drive was getting Windows XP to install on the drive. Due to the Advanced Formatting WD uses the only way I could get the drive to install Windows XP was to have the XP set-up program format the drive (not using the quick format option). I tried formatting the drive using WD Advanced format software but XP would not load. However, after installing XP on the drive I was able to use WD Advanced Format software to optimize the drive for XP. If you buy this drive and plan on installing XP just be sure to let XP set-up do the formatting and then optimize it after XP installs.

Put this in a home server uploading all of my movies, will have to add another later, and it will be the same as this one because there has been no problems. I am using this on a Windows XP computer and you must install service pack 2 for it to work properly though

Good idea... Western Digital bacame mediocre quality over last decade. The drive worked for one month before it died in extrenal enclosure. If you think this was glitch and perhaps one piece then you think the same i initially tought. however thi is my third WD drive in different enclosure working contgnously. All three died over last months.Simply put WD does not offer any reliable drive that could be used for contignuous backups. I used to love WD dard drives as built number of PCs using them, but not anymore. Also they seem to heat up like old Maxtors. They become worse quality year after year.I am switching to Samsung and Hitachi for comparisons. I need full time incremental backups running on USB reliably for my Mac computers (Time Machine).I wish WD was really conducting their reliablity tests so MTBF is not a lie on paper for some who cannot verify it - consumers.

WD is a good quality drive manufacturer with a good rating for longevity (in my opinion). I have order dozens of these drives and the last order had one (1) of the two (2) DOA. It happens. As with all online orders, if it's mission critical always buy two. You can always use a spare or return it once you are up and running. At this cost, just mirror the drives and save headache in the long term.

This product did not install and will not install, I discovered, unless there is an installation disk. Windows XP cannot be installed without one. Western digital refuses to provide the disk or any remedy. I never was able to reach a human and their web support ignores the problem. Every OS I tried (Vista, Windows XP) in which I tried a clean installation asked for the manufacturer's installation disk. Your dead without it. Avoid this product for a clean installation.

Large capacity, good price, quiet operation, and reduced power consumption are all good reasons to buy this drive. Arrived well packed, installed easily, formatted without any errors, and is running quietly.
