Seduced by reviews praising their blinding speed I installed a SSD as my C: drive when I built my new computer this winter. Unfortunately, it was too small for Win7-64 to operate effectively (I also think Win7 didn't like the SSD itself). Anyway, when it came to a replacement I fell back on Western Digital. I've never had a problem with any WD drive I've had: no failures - knock wood - they just run forever. This one was a deal, a plain vanilla OEM 1 terabyte SATA II, for less than $60 on Amazon. It comes with "green" technology installed, but I can't tell the difference (we're talking micro-amperage savings here). Better is the 64 MB cache - better than the 8-16 MB caches found on most drives this size. That speeds things up. I'd recommend it to any gamer. Installation was a snap: plug, plug and it was ready to go. Did a clean install of the OS, which took about half the time of the original install to the SSD, and Win 7-64 heaved a sigh of relief and began running right for the first time. That was a month ago and zero problems since. I heartily recommend Western Digital drives, both internal like this one and my D: drive, & external like the 2 1 TB "My Books" running off my USB 3 ports. Life is good.

When I purchased my one terabyte drive for my "dream machine", I planned to add it to the 500gb Western Digital drive. I wanted to use the 500gb for Windows Vista and my programs and the one terabyte for my data files. The idea was sound and the solution proved to be perfect. One thing to be aware of though is that this is OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and contains no hardware or instructions. I would not attempt to install it myself. I took it to my computer shop with a trusted computer geek and he performed the task. I've been very pleased with Western Digital drives... why would I want something that would die on me after a few months or even years. You'll save money with this OEM drive but if you are unsure about installing it, spend a few bucks more and have it professionally installed.

Aside from my main C: drive, I have two other auxiliary drives for data storage. This WD is one of them. This WD went from being sluggish in early 2011 to inaccessible currently. I cannot copy, move, or otherwise manipulate my files. The drive simply times out and sometimes displays an I/O error. Buyers beware. Don't be like me and save all your family photos and videos in one drive.In case you're wondering, I tried all troubleshooting techniques including re-seating the drive and plugging it into a different computer, and reinstalling Windows 7.

I purchased the SATA Hard Drive for installation on a new Q-see QS408 DVR Q-see QS408 Network Security DVR. The hard drive arrived quickly and I immediately set out to install it expecting to have the usual unknown last minute glitch. The drive fit the DVR case very well and after plugging in the cables I restarted the DVR. The OS408 DVR took over the installation after following a couple of on screen instructions and the Hard Drive was ready to go to work in no time. I find the SATA drive to be energy efficient and quiet. The down rating on Speed is only due to the fact it is too early to judge that at this time however, the quality of the playback pictures indicate it has sufficient speed for my purposes. As for dependability time will tell.

I bought this drive to replace the old one in my computer that was long full. It installed with ease, only a small hiccup when I was doing a clean install of XP, but I cleared that up no problem. I got all the stuff on my old drive transferred over quickly and I was ready to go.I've had the drive for nearly a year and I have no complaints about it. My computer was going slow for a while, but we narrowed that down to the RAM. It's pretty quiet, fast, and it's been a solid, dependable drive ever since it was installed.I only wish I had gone for a bigger drive because I managed to fill this one up in about 7 months. When I do upgrade to a bigger drive, I know this one will make a great back up or secondary drive.

Bought 3 WD10EARS (WD Caviar Green 1 TB), 2 for Intel RST RAID1 data drive, the other as a spare / clone for the SSD system drive.2 seem O.K., the other is 30% slower.I did swap sata ports, no change.With HD Tune 2.55 read speeds avg:#1 106 MB/s#2 92 MB/s#3 72 MB/sDid a full scan on the slow poke drive, no errors.Put the 2 fastest into a RAID 1 array (Intel RST).HD Tune 2.55 shows a 25% reduction in read speed (73.5 MB/s), but real use testing show much better results:5.19 GB - 3,956 filesRead from RAID 1, write to SSD - 30 seconds, 173 MB/sRead from SSD, write to RAID 1 - 60 seconds, 86.5 MB/sAnother test but smaller:1.5 GB - 1,313 filesRead from RAID 1, write to SSD - 3 seconds, 500 MB/sRead from SSD, write to RAID 1 - 3 seconds, 500 MB/sSee images for HD Tune 2.55 results

Western Digital did it again, they made a solid HDD & the power saving option is even better than the older drives. Had no problem formatting & loading data onto it in the least, though I am also running Vista Ultimate that the drive was designed for.

i have a 10 year old hard drive i've kept loaded with xp as a back up drive, it still runs flawlessly. I bought this with hopes for a faster and still reliable drive. 1 year on a hard drive is a terrible lifetime. Done with western digital.

I've had this thing for around a year, and it's still working flawlessly. Western Digital has always been my favorite HDD company, they are reliable unlike Hitachi drives. My friends and I joke about how crappy Hitachi is here, all of us have had more than 1 of their drives fail on us. As far as HDDs go I would recommend this product, it does exactly what it says and it's reliable. The price has definitely went up since I bought this though.

I have never had a hard drive fail on me, nor know any friends or family members who've had a hard drive failure. So I was very surprised when windows came up with an error about this drive failing. I had it installed as a secondary drive for more storage space, and thankfully did not have my windows OS installed on it. I hardly used it for the 3 months I had it, only putting about 200GB worth of data onto it.It failed shortly after moving a 7gb folder onto it. How incredibly inconvenient to lose all the data I had moved to this drive. I will definitely be more careful and zealous about backing important files in the future =,\Western Digital support recommends I RMA this, but I don't think I want to risk another "green" model causing me to loose more of my time then this has already cost me. Very disappointed.

I purchased two of these drives to set them up in a RAID 1 configuration in my DNS-323 NAS. However, every time I try to run the RAID 1 option in the DNS-323 configuration utility, the drive formatting fails. I consider myself computer savvy, but I am definitely not an expert. After many hours of research I still have not been able to find a solution to set these drives up as RAID 1. Some recommended solutions much to technical for me for me to try. Other reviews I have read simply say that for various technical reasons (e.g., TLER physically disabled), this drive should not be used for a RAID setup.All that being said, I did not have any problems setting my two drives up to run as independent drives in the DNS-323.

I purchased this hard drive in October 2010. It failed in May 2011, that itself was not enough for 1 star but the fun does not end there. When I tried to create RMA in WD website I got surprising message that warranty on my drive ended few days before I bought it. I contacted them via email to explain that I just bought it few months ago and it was advertised as having 3 year warranty and this is response I got :"Thank you for contacting Western Digital. I apologize for the inconvenience but we can only accommodate for 1 year of shelf life. The manufacture date of this drive was 20-SEP-2007 and your purchase date was in 2010. Unfortunately, your drive does not qualify for warranty update."So WD basically told me the warranty starts from the manufacturing date not the purchase date. Very dissapointing attitude.. I contacted Amazon and they agreed to take it back. You may want check the warranty status on WD website if you decide to buy their product anyway. I am personally going to stay away from them in the future.

I am NOT taking my computer apart to return this supposed "1TB" hard drive. HOWEVER, it is 350gigs maximum. This is just another time I get screwed from someone on Amazon. I come here thinking I'll find some great deal but here I am again, cornered again. I'll just buy this type of stuff local for now on. At least if I get screwed in town I'll know exactly who and where to go to deal with it.

In addition to the very well put together review regarding the sector issue there is another potential pitfall that would affect any SATA drive, not just Western Digital. My copy of Windows XP Professional is SP1. This version of XP does not have any SATA drivers included in the installation process on the CD. I have an ASUS motherboard, the SATA drivers are next to impossible to find (I never would have found them without a far amount of googling; there is a file on the CD called makedisk.exe that will put the SATA drivers on a 3.5" disk). Therein lies the next issue, most systems don't have a 3.5" drive anymore. There are ways around this by slipstreaming the SP2 upgrade into the CD, this is a somewhat complicated process that I would not recommend to someone without a good deal of experience. If you want to install a SATA drive in an older operating system like I did, be prepared to spend a lot of time getting it to work.Bottom line, once I was able to get the drive operational it works great; low noise, quick response, works just like I hoped. The installation issues weren't tied to the drive but more to the older operating system. If you have a newer operating system it should go a lot smoother than mine.

I have had Western Digital hard drives all of my life (Starting in the mid 80's) During that time I have had only 2 die on me, all of the others I upgraded as they became obsolete.One of the 2 HDD deaths happened just last month where my 360GB HDD died after many years of happy spinning, I was crushed.After looking at all the Drives out there and options I decided on this one, knowing about issues with Windows XP. I had the whole thing installed within 10 minutes, including taking the case off my computer and putting it back on.One thing that new buyers with Windows XP NEED to be aware of is that if you partition this HDD you MUST use the partitioning software that you can get for free from the Western Digital website. I did not partition my HDD as it is pure data storage and I like having it all in one place, however if you do not partition it you HAVE to put a jumper on the correct pins, and it did not come with one. So if you don't want to partition it like me then make sure that you have a extra jumper handy!I have been using this drive for close to a month now and I love it!

As has been stated before, if you know what you're doing, this is a pretty easy install, but be prepared to run an "ALIGN" utility if you're using XP as the O/S. May take a few hours (based on quantity of data).. This drive arrives bare bone and not only has no instructions or software, it also does not have any connector cables, (an IDE four-pin to SATA power adapter), or mounting screws. If you want to add an additional drive to an existing system, which is the reason I was gifted with this one, you'll need to get the cabling and mounting hardware elsewhere. If you want to replace a failed drive and don't want the "extra stuff" that usually comes with a drive, this drive is for you. I rarely purchase the "bleeding edge" of new technology simply because I'm not willing to punk down the bucks to be somebodies beta tester. The cost, "green" attributes, speed and lower running temperatures certainly met all of the criteria I listed in my "wish list." Western Digital is known to be stable and reliable with an excellent price to performance ratio, so far, this drive runs great and was a good choice for my computer gaming needs. I agree with the other reviewer who wished the warranty was a couple of years longer(only 3years) but with the speed of change in technology, I guess i can live with it.

So far no complaints for me. I use this drive as a data drive for my my Windows Home Server 2011 box, and the drive detected right away in disc management and I was able to format it without a problem. Would recommend this drive.

Bought this over a year ago when it hit Amazon's Lightning Deals at a great price. Had it sitting for about 9 months until I installed it within an external enclosure. The drive crashed within weeks of the install. Pulled it out then tried to re-install but no go. Drive wouldn't format. I have several other drives, including Hitachi's, Samsung's, and Seagate's. The Samsungs and Seagates are approaching three years old and still going strong. Never expected this from this drive, be warned.

Drive its working, packaging was grate.I really dont like the IntelliPower beacasue if you leave the pc and you are not usin the drive the hdd will go to a idle mode or power saver, then when you try to get something from the drive it will have a delay of 5 or 10 sec. Anyway, is the way this drive work is not a big issue since this drives are made for storage.Thanks amazon... Thanks WD

I bought this to put Windows 7 on an older HP Pavilion, as I was concerned that the 250MB that came with the computer was a little small. It installed easily, fired up and I had no problems loading Win7, and it is a solid drive. Not real blindingly fast, but no real appreciable lag, so, all in all, a good purchase. I would recommend.

This is my 3rd 1 TB WD drive. The first one I purchased flaked out on me a couple months with an interface issue. I RMAed it and got a replacement from WD in about a week. That one is residing in my media player. So far so good.This one I purchased to replaced my 80 gig Seagate that (10 years old) that finally gave up. Performance is GREAT. The SATA II makes a big difference. This model has the new larger block size filing system. So if you run Windows XP you need to use WD's a utility called ALIGN to convert the block size back to something Win XP can use.I primarily use Linux and it's EXT 3 and 4 file systems work 100% (and are FAST). Windows Vista and 7 are fine with the new block size also.For those who are sill stuck with 100 GB, or 250 GB drives and you really would like to explore media creation or just have the capacity to back up a lot of data, look into TB drive sizes. You will be constantly amazed how much data you pack on them and seem to hardly scratch the surface of it total capacity.

I bought this drive to upgrade my girlfriend's computer. OS installed fine and everything seemed good but after one day I started getting random BSODs. Any time the computer goes to sleep, blue screen. Any time you try to move a large file, blue screen.The computer is all fairly new, just a few months old. I built the original out of all new parts, but used my old 200gb hard drive. It ran fine on that drive for months. The new hard drive has been the only hard ware change.I updated all my motherboard drivers with no success. TRIED to use Western Digital's diagnostic tool. The quick scan tells me that the hard drive performs fine. If I do the extended scan though, it blue screens a couple hours in. I have tried running it 3 different times.Gave this drive the benefit of the doubt, but it's obviously crap. This is the first hard drive in my life I have ever had go bad on me, out of maybe 30 drives I've ordered personally and for work.A side note- the drive came in a box with NO padding. I have never seen a drive ship like that before, it's also the first drive I've purchased from Amazon so apparently that's how they like to ship computer hardware. No bubble wrap or anything, just a drive sitting in a small box. So I'm not sure whether to blame Western Digital for the crappy drive or Amazon's crappy shipping.One plus though is that I ordered it in the morning and got it the very next day.

I ordered this drive (WD10EARS 1TB) to use in my TivoHD. I am replacing a Seagate Pipeline 1TB that starting showing signs of failure in about 1 year. I just installed it yesterday and is working just fine. Of note is that the drive is MUCH quieter than the Seagate and recordings seem to start playing faster. To swap the drives, I used the instructions on TivoCommunity.com in a thread called "Drive Expansion and Drive Upgrade FAQ" in the "TiVo Series3 HDTV DVRs" forum. I bought this SATA with intention of replacing my 80 gig on my 11 year old Dell Dimension 8100 internally. That's the first thing I learned, SATA and IDE are very different. Gave up on that after a week or so , and 2 different adapters, it just would not work with the IDE computer, at least I could not make it work, I'm pretty handy, but no computer tech.So, I bought an external case from CompUSA for $25, installed it, formatted it, 1 TB, it took 5 hours to format it with 1 partition, wow, that's the longest it ever took me to format a hd, but it's big, "Not Your Father's 80 gig".I'm very happy with it externally, usb 2, now when I get a new computer, every thing will be on it. I kept all my program files on my C drive, and put all data files the new "L" drive.I don't notice any loudness or heat, I love it so far.SATA IS NOT IDE

Talk about a bottleneck! This drive is so slow. I put in an old 5400 rpm 250 Gb IDE drive I had laying around just to compare. The IDE drive won out. Western Digital tells me the drive is fine and performing at its expected level. They gotta be joking! For me it is an atrocious drive. I replaced it with a WD Black Edition and the bottleneck was significantly less. I've since put in a 200GB OCZ Vertex2 SSD and that solved everything (it obviously would).The only positives I can offer are if you like to hear your hard drive constantly even at idle and you like to see the hard drive activity light flash all day at speeds that might induce seizures, than its the drive for you! Otherwise, pickup a 7200 RPM drive like a Seagate Barracuda or Samsung Spinpoint or Hitachi F3 for the same amount of cash and save yourself the trouble.

I already have two of these and, especially with the new lower price, I had to get a third one so I can setup a RAID 5 Network Storage drive for my home network. These are great drives! Of course, as soon as I can afford it I will probably replace them with the new 2 GB drives that are in the same class from Western Digital. Eventually, I want to have an external, Network accessible, independent set of even more drives for our music, videos and backups.The few times I have had problems with WD drives, they have been really fast to take care of them and replace them for me. The last few years, I have noticed that WD drives are getting even more dependable and, as long as I keep my case cool, they hold out well--even under the stress of running them 24/7.With the dropping prices, it is a great time to grab a few if you store any music, videos, or other large files on your computer or network.

Congratulations! Its a hard drive! So far, it works, and it rates at 5.9 on the windows 7 scale. I wish it could have been faster. The good thing is I can "say" this computer helps with the environment because the hard drive is green...I just hope it gives me 3 years of service.

I used 4 of theses drives in my Thecus n4100Pro. I had a RAID 5 setup and they worked great. The speed was a little slower than I would have liked but they had a lot of space and were cheap.

I got this for an unbelievable low price (on sale) and use it on my HTPC. I installed it as a 2nd hard drive to store video on. No burbs, no lags, no hiccups. It works as I expected it too. To all the nay sayers I gotta tell ya they did something wrong on install or perhaps got one of the few defective units that accidentally slip through the manufacturer's doors.., in which case - while agrivating - get a replacement if it arrives DOA. Mine arrived working. SO no complaints here. I LOVE IT! Had it for about a year I think, with no problems

This drive is a fantastic time machine backup drive. It's quiet and stays cool. Disc access seems speedy also. I have used a number of these drives and have been very happy with them all. I recommend the Cav Greens.

This is a great hard drive for lots of storage. I got it about almost a month back and removed my existing HDD from my HP Pavilion desktop and replaced it with this new one. Installation was a snap (remove cables from the old one, put them into this one and you're set). My old HDD was SATA connected and so installation was a snap. But if you are installing this as a new hard drive, you dont get cables and all with it and you have to buy them yourselves and go through a few more steps. My system recognized this one instantly and after an hour or so, I had Windows 7 installed on this drive and ready to go. I do notice a drastic improvement in speed when it comes to accessing files (my old HDD was 1.5gb/sec speed, and this one is double at 3.0gb/sec). And the storage is so big that I am able to store lots of movies onto it. I love it so far. Great value for the money!

This drive installed easily, once I had the proper SATA cables. Then after an all night initial formatting, it was ready to go. I primarily use it as a secondary media storage drive and it performs well in that function. 40MB/s between drives works fine for me.

I bought this drive to replace a failing Seagate 750 GB drive in one of my HP systems. Unfortunately, I used a disk cloning utility and interface (Apricorn EZ-Gig) to clone the drive. The unfortunate aspect of this was that the cloning utility (bootable, stand-alone) was apparently based on Windows XP, which doesn't understand the formatting requirements of these advanced format drives. Following the cloning operation, I was experiencing terrible system performance, non-responsive applications, etc. After much searching, I discovered that the cloning operation was the source of my problem.Thankfully, Western Digital provides a downloadable utility, Acronis Align Tool, which will "re-align" your drive such that clusters are aligned on 8-sector boundaries. The tool worked flawlessly, though it took several hours. Following realignment, the drive has also been an excellent replacement and good performer.Keep in mind that I don't fault the vendor for any of the above "excitement", though perhaps an explicit warning is in order, to clarify the advanced format requirements. (Then again, maybe you're supposed to know all of that before you buy. :-) I've been a long-time consumer of Western Digital hard drives and will continue to be. This drive gets high marks from me.

Installed this in my windows 7 computer in place of using an external drive for backup. Make sure to buy a sata connector (with a 90 on one side) as one is not included with the drive. Then just plug it in format it and you are good to go.

Purchase this HD to use as a second storage space - to back-up my "libaries" with Windows 7 Professional. I also use it to store Acronis Images which I create a full back-up each month with an incremental backup at mid - months.Installed it - reset the Bios to use as a second drive. Windows formatted the drive in a few minutes and it was ready to go. It does come without any cables but my Dell computer had a power cable installed (and I had an extra communication cable).

I bought this hard disc on November 2010 and few days ago just blow off when I was copying a file from an 1TB Seagate Barracuda Drive - excellent drive by the way - to this "GREEN DRIVE"!!! My PC doesn't even recognize it anymore!!! It doesn't exist, and worst of all I've lost a full TB of data backup - I used it primarily for backup purposes - which I can't recover with any software available. And on top of it, I now noticed that my return due date was January 31st 2011 and I don't even get a full refund for this defective item!!! I will try to validate the warranty with Amazon or Western Digital since I deserve a better deal and treatment for my money. According to my experience I strongly warn you to avoid buying this item!!!
