It was getting increasingly difficult to find large capacity ATA100 hard drives. This 5400rpm 320GB was the largest I was able to find. It runs cooler than the 7200rpm, 100GB Hitachi drive, that it replaced. (a definite plus in my laptop!).The difference in speed is not noticeable in most tasks, and the drive runs almost silently. Since it hasn't failed in the 4 weeks I've owned it, I can say that, to this point, the drive does what it was designed to do, and does it well.

I replaced the 4 GB drive in my old Toshiba Tecra laptop with the Western Digital 120 GB. No problems at all, and besides being huge, the new drive is almost silent (the old one made clicking sound every few seconds).

I purchased this hard drive for a five year old Toshiba laptop running Windows XP. Installation was a snap and I've used it daily for the past month with no problems. This is the 80GB version (WD800BEVE 5400 RPM). It replaced a 60GB 4500 RPM that finally died. If you have an older laptop with an EIDE connection and you need to get some more life out of it, give this one a try. I am pleased and would buy it again.

Upgraded my 60 GB Toshiba to the WD3200BEVE in my Dell Inspiron 600m and it is working great so far, just did it a few days ago! Much quieter drive and does not get as hot as the Toshiba drive. The 137 GB barrier was not an issue due to Windows XP SP1 (I have SP3) and WD Data Lifeguard Tools 11.2 for Windows. Windows had no problem seeing the whole 320 GB and Data Lifeguard Tools did the rest, I now have 250 GB of extra space to extend the life of my laptop. I also bought 2 sticks of the Crucial 1 GB PC2700 RAM so for less then $200.00 combined I got two great upgrades.Other Thoughts: Don't forget the adapter on the end of your old hard drive, the (UDMA) adapter to plug from the hard drive EIDE connector into the motherboard. Hope this may help someone who does not know.

I have the 80GB model (single platter) PATA. It's virtually inaudible when idle and normal seek. However once a while, it makes this relays clicking noise (calibrating?). Doesn't bother me enough. Because of that I give it Over-all-noise 8/10. Vibration 9/10, heat 9/10. WD offers no tweaking software, but Google the NOTEBOOK HARDWARE CONTROL and play with the acoustic settings.

I didn't know what 'bulk' meant before purchasing this item. It is the same hard drive that you would normally get but without the fancy WD box. It does come very well packed. I have been using it for a few months now with no regrets. I would totally buy another one. :)

Bought this as an upgrade for a smaller (max'd out) drive on my Dell Lap Top. It worked very well, quiet and quick access. I would have liked the install disk though. Had to download from the WD website and burn a boot disk in order to get things going. A minor nuisance, to be sure, but nevertheless an extra step.

I used this 160Gb drive to upgrade my old IBM Thinkpad R51 40Gb HDD as can't justify buying a new laptop yet but was constantly running out of space. Upgraded no problem (used Acronis TrueImage Home 2009 for migrating HDD) and so far working fine after a few days. Seems to be quick and quiet enough for the price - for just over $100 I upgraded both memory (see reviews) and hdd to a useable spec to keep me going for the rest of the year at least so I'm happy! :-)

I had an old Toshiba M35X series computer and the hard drive went out. After checking out the Western Digital website and purchased this laptop replacement hard drive. Works like a charm and noticed a slight speed increase since the OEM hard drive was slower than the 5400 rpm on this hard drive.Make sure when you replace the hard drive to remove the plastic adapter on the original hard drive and place on this new hard drive so the drive can be inserted correctly.Now I am looking at the SATA drive to replace the playstation 3.

I had a Compaq Presario 710USThat is, until the Fujitsu Hard Drive crashed.I was appalled that the original drive was ONLY 20 GB! What is THAT?? You couldn't FIND a 20GB HDD now to save your life!
