I needed to upgrade my 5 year old 60 GB drive so when this WD3200BEVE dropped in price, I jumped at it. The WD is the quietest drive I've ever (not) heard. I was a bit apprehensive about its 5400 rpm but it actually seems faster than my old 7200 rpm Hitachi. After some researching on the net I discovered that these new drives have virtually the same performance whether they are spinning at 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm. I'm very happy with the drive and love the extra storage space.

These IDE laptop drives are getting hard to find locally. But who needs that when for less money I can get one at my door, usually in two days! Just wish I could find a bulk rate for 6 to 10 at a time!

There seems to be some confusion. Most of the reviews seem to have been written aboutdifferent hard drives. This review is about the: WD1600 BEVE 16GB, 2.5 Notebook Hard Drive.The WD1600BEVE is a Parallel PATA or ParallelATA or EIDE.It has a plug of over 42 pins in two rows.The other common model is a SATA or Serial ATA which has no plug or pins.Its PC board plugs directly into a socket.Don't get the two mixed up, like I did.I purchased this item and installed it in a ULTRA ULT31738 case to be used as an external HDfor my LapTopWhen I plugged it into the laptop. XP could not see it. NADA. NOTHING.I found that it was factory fresh or factory blank.Which is probably why it's so cheap. $64.99.Using, Paragon Partition Manager, (you can use the Disk Management that's in XP)I set the drive letter to 'e', the Volume Label to 'SHOE BOX' then formated it to NTFS.It Works!I now have a 149GB shirt pocket sized external HD. No Clicks or Klacks. You'll haveto hold it up to your ear to hear it run.I plan to buy 3 more, for Xmas presents for my Grand Kids. They will make niceaccessories for Net Books.

I replaced an old broken 4200 rpm Toshiba 2.5 PATA with this Western Digital HD, and it fit and worked great! Speed of loading increase by 12% over the old 4200 rpm drive. The icing on the cake was that I even got free shipping.

I cloned my old 160GB Thinkpad harddrive to this drive using Acronis Software and dropped this drive into my Thinkpad. It cloned perfectly and has operated perfectly for five months. It's quiet, fast and has expanded the capability of my laptop. I'd purchase it again.

I received this drive with no issues. The only downside was it came with no instructions but that was ok because I looked stuff up on the internet. No issues yet.

the 1st one I received was bad, the replacement arrived in 2 daysThe shipping fees were refunded within a weekthe HDD is silent & produces much less heat than the Hitachi it replacedthe price was lower than anyplace else I could find

I got an iPod for father's day and was already pushing the limit of my 54GB hard drive. Bought the 120GB PATA since Dell said 120 was the biggest I could use. Got an Apricorn EZ Upgrade Kit which will work for PATA or SATA. I downloaded the clone software from Western Digital since I read a good review of it. I assume the Apricorn would have been OK too. I was up and running in less than an hour. The only scare I had was pulling out the old drive and not seeing the pins on back like the new drive had. After a few seconds I realized that the old drive had an addapter on it that just pulled off and pushed on to the new drive.

Needed the largest PATA notebook drive I could find. This is installed in a Dell D610 and has been working fine for a couple months now. Quiet and fast just like the smaller Hitachi drive it replaced.

Once you are able to determine the exact type of hard drive your particular machine requires, the removal and re-installation of this particular hard drive was extremely easy. The formatting of the hard drive took about 1/2 the time we had expected. The H/P laptop that this hard drive was inserted into, now works better and faster than ever. Very please with this purchase.

I bought this hard drive about two months ago to replace the 80 Gb HD on my 2005 Dell Inspiron 700m. Installation was piece of cake, using the Sabrent USB-DSC5 Serial ATA or IDE 2.5-/3.5-Inch to USB 2.0 Cable Adapter, check on the review of this item. Speed is incredible. I moved the important data only, I didn't created a Disk Image 'cause I was having trouble with the previous hard drive from all the junk I had installed. So, I installed the programs and drivers from the recovery CD.So far the HD is working like charm, and still have 2/3 of space left there.This is a IDE 100 ATA HD compatible with laptop computers made before 2007, where they start using the SATA HD.The 320 Gb HD is the best for your money, if you calculate the other capacities, 80, 120, 250, etc, this is the best $ to Gb deal. I bought it for $90.98, I've seen it for $89.00 before.

Bought this drive to replace a smaller C drive in a Compaq laptop. Achieved this by putting this drive in an external case (cost $14) and attached it to the laptop with a USB cable. I then went to the WD website, where you can download a free copy of Acronis True Image software that will allow you to easily clone your existing drive. The software walks you through the cloning process and even tells you when to swap the drives. I now have the old drive in the external case and use it for back-ups. Would have given 5 stars but the drive does not come with a jumper nor is there any information printed on the drive regarding the settings. Not a problem if you are using it as a master but could be if you want to use it as a slave or cable controlled.

I ordered this drive with overnight shipping from Amazon, because I needed a quick replacement. Total price was still less than this drive would have been at local stores. I have found I can count on Amazon for reliably delivering items quickly and this was yet more proof. This Western Digital Scorpio drive provides speed as good or better than I expected. The noise level is fine. The one reason I have rated it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the drive vibrates more than the original. You could not feel the original drive running inside of this apple macbook (white). I can definitely tell when this new WD Scorpio 160 SATA drive is spinning as there is a subtle vibration in the laptop. Frankly, this worries me a little, but there's not much I can do unless the drive outright fails (otherwise I have little justification for an amazon return or warranty replacement -- which would probably be a refurb). Drive replacement in a macbook isn't as straightforward as it should be if the rubber shock absorption strips fall out of place. If you're lucky they will stay in place and the drive slides in nicely. If they decide to be a pain, you will spend an hour trying to get the drive back in. I came up with a workaround, but this shouldn't be necessary. What a stupid design by Apple.

PROs:1. Much quieter than my OEM Hitachi HDD, which was constantly clicking.2. Much faster...wow!3. Much cooler-running! My battery now runs longer, and the laptop itself doesn't get so hot anymore.4. Four times the storage as the OEM drive.Most dramatic improvement I've ever made to this laptop, as good if not better than going from 2 x 256MB RAM to 1 x 256MB + 1 x 1GB! My nearly 5 year old Toshiba Tecra S1 now boots up and runs as quickly as my friend's one year old new dual-core laptop!CON: [...] would buy me a much bigger and even faster (7200rpm not 5400rpm) SATA drive, sigh...but it's all about supply and demand isn't it? Not too many laptops around with this ATA-6 (PATA) drive interface anymore.Installation was painless...less than 10 minutes. Reloading and updating Windows XP took about 3 hours, and doing the same with all my other software and drivers took an additional 3 hours. But worth it, because I wanted to start all over from a totally clean drive, that's why I didn't get one of those Apricorn HDD-mirroring kits.

I was actually trying to replace a 40GB drive for an older compaq presario v2000, and was not able to find one that size, but since these things are standard, I sure could use the extra storage. I installed the same day it arrived, and worked like a charm. Installed new OS an I had a "new" laptop again...This model is actually faster than the drive I had before, so things are a little bit faster. I have been using the drive for a couple of weeks and have not had any problems...

I ordered this drive in an attempt to increase my laptop storage space. It was an easy install. I formatted the drive and installed the OS without difficulty. I had the hard drive crash 2 days later. I re installed the OS and had the same thing happen that day. I returned the drive to Amazon and requested a replacement. To Amazon's credit, it was a hassle free return. The replacement drive was dead on arrival. I returned the drive for a refund. I reinstalled the original drive and it has been working like a champ .. all 40 GB.

I bought this to back up a failing hard drive in my 6 year old Dell laptop. I also purchased the Apricorn EZ-UP-UNIVERSAL EZ Upgrade Universal Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit. This made the transition very easy.

The Scorpio line is excellent. Have an older laptop using the ATA drives and the performance was markedly improved as was of course the storage space. Price and delivery were excellent.
