When the 40 GB HD failed on my old Toshiba A70 Laptop I went looking for replacement Amazon offered this 120 GB HD for less than I would have paid locally for a replacement 40 GB.It was delivered two days earlier than promised and it worked perfectly.

I recently installed this drive in an older HP notebook that began life with an 80GB HDD. I thought that when I slipped in a 120GB that I had pushed the limit but then learned I could go to at least a 320GB HDD on nearly any PC so I gave it a try. Not knowing any "best" way to turn up a new drive, I simply installed my basic Win XP OS and then did a recovery from a Ghost image I had just created from my old drive. Went as smooth as silk and the drive is great. Quiet, quick, and plenty of room for my needs. Three year warranty is excellent also. I would recommend this drive for anyone seeking to upgrade the capacity of an older notebook/laptop. There are probably better ways to reinstall an OS and data on a new drive but my way worked perfectly. WD drives continue to serve me very well and I'll continue with them for the foreseeable future. I've incidentally long been a fan of Norton's Ghost and it has saved my bacon several times so I'm a true believer in it's worth. As always, Amazon served me very well in this purchase. Good price and very fast delivery (free also).

Works as expected, original HD failed after year and a half more life than most ofthe OEMs for my model laptop. Maybe this one will last twice as long ???Replacement was quick and easy, laptop working as expected so far...

My Gateway Laptop drive finally gave out. The 17" LCD was still working and no Motherboard issues. It has a very nice keyboard for a laptop also. I didn't want to just trash it. After searching for the original hard drive model some site recommended this model as a replacement. Ordered and kept the box just in case. No need. It worked fine right out the box. Just a simple plug in and turn on installation.

I purchased this drive to replace the 7200 RPM Hitachi 80 GB drive that originally came on an aging IBM Thinkpad. I am happy with the product. Compared to the original hard drive, it is very quiet, runs much cooler, and despite its slower 5400 RPM rating has a very noticeably faster data transfer rate (which I attribute to higher data densities).Installation was easy with the help of a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter, also from Amazon (highly recommended, despite poor manual), the free for personal use DriveImg XML software, and another PC I borrowed. I removed the original drive from the Thinkpad, attached it to the other PC via the Vantec USB adapter, copied the contents to that PC via DriveImg XML, deattached the old drive from the borrowed PC, attached the new Western Digital drive to that PC via the Vantec USB adapter, partititioned the new Western Digital drive (still on the borrowed PC) with the Windows XP disk manager ( Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management), and used DriveImg XML to copy the data I had temporarily stored in the borrowed PC to an appropriate partition in the new Western Digital drive. I then marked that partition as "active" in the XP disk manager.At that point I deattached the new Western Digital drive from the borrowed PC and the Vantec USB adapter, installed it on the Thinkpad I was upgrading, turned on the power switch and....things worked just fine and have worked just fine for several months.Given I am happy with the drive, that I need another external USB drive for backups, and that it is difficult to find big PATA drives, I'll order another one and use it as an external USB drive for backups via the Vantec adapter. Like that I'll have a spare PATA drive just in case I need it.

A PATA type (Can't use the newer SATA HD's in the 2003 Dell) and the BIOS would not allow over 128-GB capacity either.The original 60-GB HD had developed 'bad sectors' after experiencing High Altitude (over 12k') and last sector was System32. Nice to have 120-GB on this new one.This was an excellent replacement and a great value. Did have one scare after 'Suspend' (I normally use Hibernate, or Shut-Down) when it resumed with "No HD Found", but next day it booted up and I ran thorough Disk Check with no errors. Had never done a De-Frag and when I checked, it was needed.Amazon's available return policy was great 'peace of mind' for that scare, but glad it was just a 'suspend' issue after my install of WinXP sp3 and all those Programs.

I bought this as a replacement drive for my Dell Inspiron 9300 (circa 2004) and it works! I've had it running Windows 7 for two weeks and the drive has been working fine.

I replaced the original hard drive in my HP Pavilion lap top with this one. A simple plug and play and many hours of software installation. No complaints about the product, whatsoever. I wished the software installation was as easy as the hard drive installation.

Easy to install and works well ... what else could you ask for? Smooth and quiet, gets the job done. Not much in the way of documentation included with this drive but I've changed plenty of them, so didn't really need any.

Installed this hard drive in a Dell Latitude D510 that originally came with a 60GB drive. Looking online for the maximum HDD capacity of this laptop was not real clear with mixed reports. This 160GB W.D. Scorpio worked fine and all 160GB is recognized. The install was easy using the Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter and cloning software.

To start things off, this drive was shipped out exceptionally slowly.I wasn't able to take the hard drive and computer (iBook G4) to Geek Squad to install it for over a month after it was received, thereby negating any possible return (my fault).Best Buy/Geek Squad does the install ($50) and the new OS (Leopard) won't recognize the hard drive. So now I have to pay to have diagnostic tests ($65) done on the hard drive.Long and short of it is that the drive failed all but one of the diagnostic tests.So now I've put $70 into the hard drive itself and $115 to find out that the drive doesn't even work.Now I am $185 poorer and have nothing to show for it.Maybe I received the one bad egg.I would urge caution.

Received item quickly. I am writing this review from the computer which has this drive installed. I have always favored WD drives. All of my personal computers that I have upgraded have WD drives. All perform great. Would recommend this brand without hesitation.

I've been looking for a bigger hard drive for a somewhat aging laptop and found this. I am a serious shopper and I saved about $[...] - $[...] bucks over Newegg by buying this through Amazon, and even more by not buying it through a regular dealer. The biggest problem was it seemd it took forever for it to arrive as I picked standard shipping, but since my laptop was still working it was fine, I guess I was just anxious to get my computer upgraded. The disk works great, is quiet and now I have plenty of space. I set it up as two drives so I have space just to put all my documents, projects etc on.

I am not anything close to a geek when it comes to computers. I know enough to really get myself in trouble easily. That said, this hard drive was really easy to setup and it just works. I have not had any problems with it at all. Bless you Western Digital!

Our old laptop started making trouble for us. Then shortly thereafter, it just stopped. A friend recommended ordering this one for us. He installed it a few months back and we've had no problems whatsoever. Very pleased with the performance.

Toshiba laptops have their own hard drives and this one may not fit. I thought I matched it perfectly as a replacement/upgrade, but the prongs would not allow installation. You may want to double check with your manufacturer before ordering.

It spins, it reads, it writes. Great.Had to replace a client's Dell Inspiron 6000's stock IDE HDD which died, a loud Hitachi 40GB. This Scorpio is much quieter than that stock drive. Performance is about the same. Loaded up Windows, good to go.Prices have gone up for this outdated tech, but this was the most reasonable bargain out there.

This HDD installed flawlessly into my old HP zx5000 series laptop (zx5280us) circa 2004. As previous reviewers have stated, make sure you take the IDE connector off the old HDD or the pins of the drive won't connect and the drive won't be recognized.

The drive is quicker and quieter than the original hard drive in the the two laptops that I installed this drive on. I installed it in a Lenovo T42 and a Dell Inspirin 6000 without any issues. Definitely worth the money if it's the only thing wrong with your laptop.

The reason why I am saying it's mixed is that this particular item I had drop shipped and installed. Within days of receiving my laptop via FedEx the HD crashed after a sudden stop in the car. It does not appear to be a robust drive.Returns appear to be a snap with Western Digital. They seem to have their act together.I've had no physical problems with the 250 GB version of the drive.However, There appears to be issues with certain enclosures. I haven't got that sorted out yet.
