I had an old laptop (c.2004) that appeared to be in good shape except for a hard drive that clicked and clacked and never made it into Windows. The laptop specifications said hard drives up to 40 GB could be installed, but by reading reviews of drives and forum posts, I found that the PATA interface could accept more. The 40 GB "restriction" was really just the maximum hard drive capacity offered in the laptop at that time.I found this 160 GB 2.5-inch PATA hard drive and checked the specs. It fit the interface connector and had the typical form factor for such drives, and my laptop did not list any restrictions on drive shape that might prevent a standard drive from fitting into the case. So, after doing my research, I was left with much evidence of "No reason why this shouldn't work" but nothing from a manufacturer or vendor saying "This will definitely work".I took a chance on the drive, installed it in the laptop, formatted it and installed Windows without a hitch, and have been running nonstop ever since.I chose a Western Digital 2.5-inch drive that looked like it had good user reviews, and price checked it on Amazon and a few other sites. Amazon had the lowest price ($64.99) and offered fulfillment through Amazon so shipping would be free. This was the deal that reassured me that if I had made some colossal blunder and the laptop was still toast, at least I wouldn't have invested serious coin into the failed endeavor. As it turns out, everything went swimmingly and I am up and running like a champ.One note unrelated to the hard drive: once you resurrect an antique laptop, you may have to get used to painfully long waits to get your internet browser and other programs running. That is not the fault of the hard drive. Additional laptop memory (RAM) would help.

The only reason this HD didn't get a five was because of the instructions. Nowhere in the installation instructions does it tell you to remove the adapter for the pins from the old HD and put it on the new one. Frustrating trying to get the HD inserted and working resulted in a side-by-side comparison. Then the light turned on and I removed the adapter and placed it on the new HD..viola.

I have an ancient 8 yo Gateway laptop that I'm still happy with. It was state of the art when I got it and still has advantages I prefer over the newer laptops and notebooks. I'm a big WordPerfect fan, and this older Gateway and the Windows loaded on it support WP and Quattro Pro. Unless something's changed lately, it seems WP does not make a version for Mac, my desktop. Also, every new version of WP seems to mimic Word more closely and Word is useless. So I prefer the older version of WP.Unfortunately, in spite of taking every precaution I can think of, sometimes a virus gets to the Gateway laptop. The first time, I took it to a computer repair shop that claims its geeks are super. NOT! Cost $200 and when I got it home, not only had they loaded all sorts of their own programs on it, the pop-up ad virus was still there! I replaced the hard drive with one bought at a big box store for half the price of the so-called repair. The replacement was 120 GB, but the Gateway only recognized 80 GB. No problem.But the next time a virus struck, the big box store no longer stocked compatible hard drives, so I turned to Amazon. This 80 GB hard drive more closely resembles the original hard drive. So far, so good, knock wood. But maybe I should stock up another just in case?

I have a sort of mixed review here.I originally purchased this for my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I installed XP just fine, all updates, drivers, programs, etc. However, when I shut the laptop to hibernate it, the entire laptop crashed and would not ever boot up again.I reformatted once more, got all drivers, updates, etc. and yet again when I tried to hibernate it, I got a Blue Screen of Death, and then it would never load up again.I grabbed my old Toshiba Satellite 2410 and swapped out the hard drive. My Dell Inspiron now has a Seagate hard drive in it (80GB also) and I can hibernate with no issue. The Toshiba can also hibernate just fine with this Western Digital drive.I guess there's some compatibility issue between Dells and Western Digital? Anyways, both laptops are now happy, and this WD hard drive has been working just fine for the past several months that I have owned it.So if you have a non Dell laptop, this hard drive should work GREAT for a basic replacement :)

I bought the 80 GB version (WD800BEVE) earlier this year but it seems Amazon is phasing that one out. Some older laptops actually limit how large the storage device can be, so even though on a per-gig basis you would do best to spring for the larger drives (250/320), you may realistically be stuck with something closer to 120. My point about price is that this older PATA (= Parallel ATA, a.k.a. IDE) standard, having been relatively obsoleted by SATA drives, has found its market drastically reduced and thus the cost savings is just not there. You could buy the same size (and even faster) SATA drive for probably two-thirds the price. SATA cables are also cheaper. Still, throwing out the laptop itself is hardly a better solution!So for the replacement hard drive in question, fifty-five bucks to bring an otherwise still functional Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop back to life was a good deal. This Western Digital has been in and running as the main drive for three months with no issues. It is quiet and big(ger at least than the old 30 GB drive). My Inspiron has a tendency to run hot--designing it with the fan on the bottom was not a stroke of genius--and that very well may have led to the original drive's demise. So I use a fan utility (see Comments below for link) to manage it and or at least see what is going on. Cleaning out the laptop's dusty innards from time to time is also a good idea.As others have noted, this will arrive as a bare drive (i.e., not formatted or partitioned), so just be prepared to start from scratch. That is obviously no problem at all if you are replacing a dead disk, as you will be reinstalling Windows anyway. (A bonus is thus *not* bloating down your computer as when it comes pre-packaged from Dell, Gateway, etc.) I was not moving programs or files over from a working (but presumably full) drive, however there are software packages to do just that.The one VERY HELPFUL piece of advice I will mention is to look for the pin adapter which this line of laptops uses, and make sure you take it off the drive you are replacing and use it for the new one. Knowing to expect this may save you a heart attack when you think the new drive doesn't fit!In summary, if you need to replace a 2.5" hard drive on an older laptop, your choices are limited, and WD seems to make the bulk of what will fit. Newegg carries much the same choices. Get the biggest that your laptop (specifically, your BIOS) will tolerate, and keep on truckin'!

While PATA drives aren't exactly in high demand, I'm sure I'm not alone in having an older laptop that just isn't quite ready to be recycled yet.Our older son's laptop recently had a hard drive failure. Much to his dismay, when just couldn't justify getting an entirely new laptop when the cost of this drive was so low. The size is perfect, as his laptop can't read anything more than 137GB.Installation was a snap, and this thing ran like a dream. WD is definitely one of the better HD brands these days, and I would highly recommend any of their drives for home use!

The hard drive on my 12" PowerBook G4 1.5GHz died a couple of weeks ago, and I needed one to replace it. This hard drive was one of the ones recommended by iFixit.com, so I decided to order it. I had read somewhere that these PowerBooks cannot use a drive larger than 160GB, so to be on the safe side that's the size that I chose.The hard part was taking the PowerBook completely apart for the installation (pictures here: [...]), but once I got that taken care of installing the actual drive into the machine was easy-peasy. We've had it up and running for almost a week now and it's great. It doesn't run any louder than the previous hard drive, as far as I can tell, so I'm happy with it.

It has been almost 2 years since I ordered this drive for my dell laptop and in that time I have not had any issues with it.

The hard drive I ordered arrived very quickly and slipped right into it's slot. I had the computer reloaded and up and running in an hour or so. Can't know how long this hard drive will last. but feeling good now!

I used this drive (320GB) to replace a 60GB drive (which was full) in a Acer Aspire laptop. I attached this drive to a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter and after a couple of minutes the computer recognized the attached drive. I then used Casper 5.0 to clone the old drive to this one. After about an hour and a half it finished copying. I turned the laptop off, unplugged it, removed the battery, removed the old drive and plugged in the new one, put the battery back in and plugged in the power and voila! I now have the same computer with about 5 times as much disc space. (Remember when 60GB was considered a lot?!) So far the new drive works great and is very quiet. The only problem is that it must run hotter than the old drive because the fan in the laptop now runs constantly. I don't like the extra fan noise, but it is worth it to have the extra space. I just hope it is not doing any damage to the laptop, or that this drive is defective since I haven't read anyone else having this happen. Perhaps I was too greedy and should have gotten the 160GB drive.

Bought this drive about 18 months ago for an old back-up laptop. It got very little use during the 18 month run when it suddenly started turning out bad sectors. WD website made it pretty easy to diagnose and return for a replacement. And as I do with all my computers I made an image of the OS and drivers making for a pretty quick swap out replacement. I also back up the files on a regular basis. Nonetheless - a drive should not fail so soon. At this time I will take the early failure to be one of the small percent that will fail early. If the replacement also fails early I will be back to revise the rating downward as that would be more indicative of a QA lapse at WD.

I bought this for an older Windows laptop I picked up which was missing it's hard drive. Product arrived promptly and was well packaged. Installation was a breeze once I ordered the adapter that was probably thrown out with the old hard drive. Powered right up, runs great.If you are ordering a hard drive for an older laptop that uses a PATA drive then this is a good choice. If you need a SATA drive then don't order this. And if your system does use Serial ATA, I would suggest actually getting a solid state drive. The greatly increased speed, reduced temperature and longer battery life that a SSD provides is well worth the extra money if your hardware supports it.

I am an admirer of Western Digital hard drives and have used them extensively over the years. However, this was the first time I purchased one for a Laptop. I am very happy with the results to date: this particular 120GB drive was first cloned externally from the existing 40GB drive it replaced. It then took its place internally and has performed flawlessly so far !

Hard drive came in a box well packed, no complains there. I was able to upgraded a hard drive that it failed on my uncles laptop to this one. No issues having the laptop recognizing the hard drive. installed windows xp pro. Price is reasonable for an old ATA drive, since ATA hard drive are not mainstream any more this is why are more expensive than Sata\sata ii.

I was very much on the fence about keeping or scrapping my seven year old laptop. It had always been very lightly used as most of the time I use my desktop machine. But, alas, the hard drive failed badly a few months ago. Based on the excellent condition the machine is otherwise in, I finally decided to give this Western Digital replacement drive a try. Wow, am I ever happy that I did so. For about the price of a tank of gas I've got my old standby ready to go again, but now it is faster, quieter and has more capacity than it did when new.The Western Digital drive is so quiet that I have to watch the drive lights to make sure something is actually going on. Loading programs and such seems to happen about twice as fast as it used to.The only hassle is that I've had to go back to the original Recovery CD which came with the machine (boy, did it ever take me some time to find that!) and then sit through many iterations of Windows XP update catching up on seven years of so called progress. Fortunately I didn't have any critical personal files on the old hard drive, so no worries there. Regular backups are a very good thing :).

To be honest, I was a BIT iffy about purchasing this same drive again, since this is the same one as the last drive that I've had in my laptop (which failed, and that's why I'm buying a new one). Nevertheless, I've installed it in my trusty old DELL Latitude D600 and it's working without a hitch so far. I think I can safely vouch for WD's quality, especially since I've just received my WD Elements 1TB drive, and that's been working good as well.

The 40 GB hard drive in my old Dell gave up the ghost some time back. I just set it aside for over a year opting to use my desk top instead. The wife was about to tose the good looking ole Dell out so I decided might as well recycle. This new WD Cavier unit snapped in in less than five and took XP in less than an hour of automatic set up. Loading all the Windows updates was done in about another hour. This drive boots fast, is super quiet, seeks very fast and makes me glad I kept the old lap top. I could not buy a new laptop for $60.00. A very good investment.

I bought this hard drive for my Inspiron 6000 laptop which quit working due to HDD failure. Without much difficulty, I could install the HDD (this is the first time). Works fine without any problem and I hope to use the laptop for some more time. Old HDD had an adapter that is attached to the pins. I removed it and installed in the new HDD before sliding the new HDD into the slot. Hope this helps a novice like me to install this.
