Bought to replace 15 year old Sony receiver. My wife and I hooked-up everything in about 2 hours including balancing the speakers
Sound is very good with my surround Bose cube speakers, i-phone music sounds good. What's not to like for 50% of the DH840 price.

The Sony's newest home theater is the STR-DN840. The STR-740 is last years model, which at the time was great. the 840 adds some networking and wireless ability plus a little more power per speaker.
However, the 740 is going for around $200 while the 840 is now $400.
If you are not worried about WiFi and networked systems, the 740 is tremendous for literally half the price.
Highly recommended.

Sounds great. Love it. The auto setup really helps. Surround sound really pops. I also like the option for two subs. I really see no reason to go back to the movie theater.

I've owned some high-end Onkyo receivers, which are prone to failing due to overheating. After loosing my second Onkyo (despite extra cooling fans) I went with this receiver. I did not expect to find that it does guided setup like the Onkyo Audyssey system - it includes a microphone that you place around the room, and it measures the response and automatically adjusts the channels accordingly. I thought I would have to do that manually.
My only concern is that I am maxed out on HDMI ports - four ports is kinda skimpy by today's standard. Blue-Ray, Direct-TV, game console, and VCR/DVD (which is also HDMI) and I now have no room for expansion. I can't think of anything I might want to add anytime soon, but when I buy something and immediately max out its capacity, it makes me a little nervous. An extra HDMI port would put my mind more at ease.

I got more than I paid for, this receiver has exceeded my expectations in every way. I'm saying set up your speakers whever you want them , push a button and it's done. Just like that my kids can do the set up. You just can't beat the quality for the price

Only $200, can't beat that for what you get. Way better than denon, denon sucks. I bought this and some paradigms, and they sing. 7.1 lets you biamp the front speakers. way awesome.

Easy setup and plenty of power. Is it outrageous and gonna blow your mind with clarity and performace?? Well....no but it's a good cheap upgrade for anyone replacing an outdated system and someone who wants HDMI passthrough and switching. I love Sony and have always been a fan of this underrated brand in A/V. Buy it! You will love the auto calibration too its so sweet!

I 've purchased many receivers over the years and I always come back to Sony. Bought this for my son's Birthday and very pleased with price and performance. After wiring this recevier for his home theater we wired up and old Sony that I bought 20 years ago to run just his outside pool speakers. You can buy a $600 Denom and you won't get a better receiver or performance than this 740!

Perfect solution for my home theater needs at a very reasonable price ($223). Easy to install and operate. Its smart technology allows control of several devices (Blu-Ray/DVD, cable TV, speakers, AM/FM radio) from a single remote control. The different audio settings (concert hall, stadium etc) are a surprise bonus.

This is far better than others I have tried and was a great price. The ease of installation and HDMI system is phenomenal. This also has a USB port and allows you to control the device via the remote. Great system!

I bought this to replace my blown Yamaha vx 371. It was a breeze to set up and is also simple to use. I have this connected to 2 tower speakers and Infinity and JBL front highs and surrounds. Also have two subs hooked up to take advantage of all of its features. I'm not sure it pushes quite as much power as it says but the sound is crystal clear and very comparable to my previous Yamaha. I haven't had any issues with it and can't begin to tell you how much bang/features you get for your buck.

If you want a receiver that has HDMI connections, but don't need all the "smart" extras! This is the one for you! Sounds good, easy setup, price is reasonable. There isn't really anything bad to say about this receiver. I would like a phono input but that's easy enough to work around these days.

The receiver worked well with my 7.2 speaker system. That being said, it failed 32 days after delivery. I run a graduate housing complex with 500+ residents, and it saw more than average use. That being said, it should not have failed so quickly. I returned the device, and the replacement has been fine for 6 months of use.

When our old Sony amp finally bit the dust after 15 years there was no doubt in my mind about what brand to buy. I went to the internet to find out where the industry had gone. I found that the magic "word" is HDMI. I looked at our new HD TV: HDMI port. I looked at our Directv: HDMI port. I looked at our old DVD: are you kidding? I looked at the specs for the Sony STR-DH740: 5 (yes, five) HDMI ports! That settled it.
I ordered the Sony amp, the Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray, and several HDMI cables from Amazon. When they got here I plugged in 3 HDMI cables and the power cables and speaker wires. Then came the cute little surprise. You plug in a microphone (included), hold it where you usually sit, and click on go. The amp sends loud tones at various frequencies to each of the speaker ports. The amp determines which speakers are connected, what the audio characteriistics are for each one, and sets the appropriate volumes. The only problem was that I only got to do it once!
Works great, sounds great, looks great, great pictures.
Keep in mind that without HDMI cables and supporting electronics nothing works very well.

This unit is great, it is a replacement for another sony I had.
The only reason I didn't give it a five star was the remote takes a while to get used to. It requires some customizing to get it the way you want if you are as picky as I am
Also I wish it had more RCA inputs for my older audio gear... Adapter cables will fix this

my my my how stereo's have changed one they are now called audio video receivers. The name is not the only thing that's changed gone are bass and treble controls, gone are tuning dials gone are any kind of mechanical adjustment, This device now totally intergrates your audio and video experience. Menu is displayed on your tv screen, and yes the unit does have a display, if you have the eyes of an eagle, display can even be turn off' . Gone are the days of car battery size wires to hook up behemoth speakers no more 15" woofers to get that deep Basso Profoundo , this unit supports 2 powered 8-10 " woofers which can really bring down the house with mini book shelf speaker you have room filling sound with out room filling speakers. . Oh yes the 3/4 " spacing on the dual banana speaker jacks has changed to 1" to comply with European safety standards. This can be had on the web for $8.50 ea plus $5.50 s&h .not from amazon, amazon has a much better deal Sewell Ocelot 12 pr for appr $17. awesome unit easy to operate but please follow all instructions you wont be sorry. Keep on " Jammin"

Upon reading the reviews of customers with dying hdmi inputs, I went and bought this anyways and knock on wood, never had a problem. I would suggest reading the manual as to what the effects do (pl2x, neo6, etc) because there are many and they are all useful to an extent. This receiver outputs phenomenal sound with the right speakers, however, I do have a few gripes not worth bringing the stars down for. One is that the usb port is ONLY for Apple products or Sony products. Forget using it for your Android or anything else. Second, my last Sony receiver was about 5 years old but had a small display showing exactly which speakers were outputting sound. This one doesn't seem to have that. It was very useful because you didn't have to run up to each speaker and stick your ear up to it.

Love the sound quality and excellent price. Great features and was very easy to set up. Only issue is the HDMI connection with my LG 60" plasma. The ARC function doesn't work well between the two, though they both have the function built in.

Saw this was a highly reviewed and rated A/V receiver so I decided one this one. I am glad I did. It has a noticeable sound improvement over my last Sony receiver, a good amount of digital and analog inputs. Its great for my living room set up.

I bought this for only a few dollars more than the 5.1 Channel by Sony. I purchased this to bring my home theater up to spec. Incredible sounds, more than enough power and speaker ports. Once I set it up and discovered was so good I purchased another for our media center...

I bought this to replace a 2 year old onkyo that was dieing.
Pros:
3D and 4K pass through
No hdmi issues and fast start up
Visually appealing to look at in the cabinet
Cons:
Limited setup configuration options
Lack of bass in regular speakers regardless of speaker size or sound configuration on the receiver. A setup without a sub is not possible in my opinion with this receiver. I had previously ran a 5.0 setup and liked it but could not get enough base from the receiver to the speakers without bringing out my sub making it a 5.1 setup. (yes i tried both large and small speaker selections)
The sound is very bright. I prefer more of a warm sound and this is somewhat annoying.
Overall I am pleased with my purchase.

I am upgrading from a sony str dh520 which is now in my bedroom because i wanted to try a .2 setup. I have a bic america f12 and a polk audio psw 505 with sony speakers from different hi fi systems and all these are powered by this reciever. the str dh520 was loud, consideering i had it at a constant volume 12 with only the f12 connected and it shook the house.......neighbours had beun to complain! The str dh740 is not necessarily loud but the sound quality is excellent. I have to pump it up to around volume 26 o get descent sound out of it but the quality of the sound is true surround sound. I love it. the on screen menu for the amp is a bonus too and the remote is easy to use. i like that this has the auto calibration mic but remember to reset the front speakers to small size so as to get lfe output from both subs. This is an inexpensive 7.2 system and i would recommend it to anyone out in the market for a good av reciever. the Sony STR-DA5800ES 9.2 is my next purchase, hopefully in a few years

I bought this for our master bedroom surround sound system. It works fine and setup was easy. I'm not giving it higher than 3 stars because it lacks any kind of auto eq, it's not very powerful and it doesn't have pre-outs. It has a setup microphone which is used to set the distances and that's all. It doesn't include any king of eq correction like audyssey, ypao, or mcacc. I knew this buying it and I bought it because it was an inexpensive 7.1 receiver. It's not really a 7.2 receiver since both subs put out the exact same signal. It basically has a built in y splitter. It's a bottom of the line 7 channel receiver. I got a 3 star receiver for a 2 star price.

My Onkyo receiver stopped working several years ago. I decided to try this Sony out so we could finally have a full home theater again. It is far better than the Onkyo that it replaced. I would definitely buy it again.

For the price, there is nothing to complain about. It is a welcome add in to an audio fanatic's entertainment center. It has been a few months into it, and I still cannot find any flaws at all. If you know what you are doing, you do not need anymore from a receiver.

This item will not play with a 1080i projector. I have tried all sorts of configurations. I was unable to return this device so it looks like I will have to find a way to work around for this problem with the reciever.

About after warranty, it failed. Mailed to sony service--they could not fix it--really--told me too bad. Didn't offer anything else, no explanation. Into landfill. Never will I buy ANY sony product again.

I purchased this receiver used and the seller stated only the receiver would be received. After reading a 66 page manual on line I managed to get most of it working correctly. However, there was a small microphone provided by the manufacturer needed to calibrate the sound and I did not receive this part or even know I would not be receiving a vital part or an owners manual already printed from the ad. I was disappointed that the parts not included were not listed, I felt deceived that the seller didn't disclose vital parts would not be included.
I would have gladly paid for a new one had I known this. Do not waste your money on used items solld on Amazon.
