The receiver keeps dropping the Blu-Ray signal when ever you press the vol (up/down) or mute button. It goes back to the load screen as if you just powered ON the BD player. Tried swapping players (LG/Panasonic) and HDMI cables, same issue. Also tried all possible documented settings change to the blu-ray player and receiver, without success.
Teh workaround that I eventually figured out was to turn OFF the HDMI Control but that is impractical as you have to enable the option after every play, not to mention the fact that if you switch inputs, you have no audio
Secondly, no sound on DTC encoded media streaming from the network. If it is not DTS encoded, you hear the sound just fine.
After spending more than two hours with L1 & L2 support at Sony, the L2 tech agreed that the first one was an issue. He could not find a way to check the firmware on the receiver to determine if the issue was with the FW or receiver. For the second one, I was pointed to Sony literature indicating that it may or may not work depending on audio encoding in the media files.
As much as I wanted to keep it, I am sending it back ending my dalliance with the Sony AV receiver in a long time.
if you purchase it, ensure that these (or atleast the first one) works for you.

Great receiver !!! You would be hard pressed to find a similar receiver with this much power and features for the price. I love the fact that it is NOT internet ready. I have enough internet in my home including a 3D BD/DVD player that is wifi ready. I have this unit connected to my Sony KDL-70R550A 3D TV. I use high speed HDMI cables designated for 3D. My TV is hung on the wall so this receiver lets me have only 2 wires/cables hanging from the back of the TV. The TV's power cord and one HDMI. I have 4 HDMI components hooked up to back of the receiver. I love the HDMI 3D Standby Pass Through feature which allows me to watch an input without leaving the receiver on. On the other hand this is also the only feature I don't like. When I push the input button on the remote to change inputs it also turns on the receiver. I then have to turn the receiver off which still allows the signal to pass through if I want to watch something on the TV without leaving the receiver on. This is an extra step I was not counting on but it works. I am guessing that the receiver has to turn on in order to switch the inputs. I have an Infinity 7.1 speaker system with a 12 in. subwoofer, which sounds awesome with this receiver. Remember in order to enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the AV receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI. If you use the Optical / Tos-Link connection you will only get Dolby Digital and DTS. The only other thing I don't like is the speaker thumb screws could be a little larger and spaced a little further apart. Next time I will use banana plugs

Very happy with unit, sound is as good as if not better than than by 7 year Old high end Harman Karmon which cost 5 times that amount back then. Except for the fact that I was unable to find the "sensor adjustment" and plug for playing the iPad, or iPhone. the system was far superior, than my old unit, and easy to setup.

This receiver is a bargain. Its equipped with enough features for my needs. I mainly bought this because my old A/V receiver doesn't have HDMI ports, until I found this sony A/V receiver, it has 4 HDMI port (just enough for my setup, and it has 4k pass through, great for in advance system that has 4k). I am not an power user who needs a lot of feature or setup. this is more than enough for me.

So far so good. We purchased this for our home theater, and so far it works great. I love that it has Night Mode in case someone is watching a movie while the rest of the house is asleep. Will update review if something comes up.

This receiver looks very plain and the LED is not exactly sleek. Not the point. This device does everything that high-end device does. I am always looking towards the future when I buy electronics. 7.1 is the future of home theater, this does 7.2 plus 4K (also the future of TV/movies).
The sound distribution is fantastic when paired with a Blu-Ray player. You don't really experience it when watching TV, but oh does it shine in movies. So clear and crisp, you experience a new dimension when you hook up your 7 speakers. Additionally, if you fall asleep while watching a movie, the receiver automatically shuts off, which is nice.
The installation took a little longer than anticipated, but lets be frank, when you deal with electronics in general, it usually takes longer than you were thinking.
Overall, if you're looking to upgrade, just buy it. The price was really good for all of its features.

I just bought this receiver I have some bows 301 speakers for the front I have a pioneer 9 inch speaker for the center and two small surround speakers and a Sony 3000 subwoofer. I didn't know how well it would sound when it was all hooked up but I hit The auto calibration and it sounds awesome if you want I A home theater system that you can hook up any kind of speakers this is the one.

Great receiver for the price! I have this in use in my DIY home theater. Great clear sound, lots of power for the $$. Can tune in crossover points for each channel and adjust each individual speaker throw. Lots of great options. Love the USB input, all I have to do is load up a USB stick with as many MP3's as it will hold and plug it in and I have a juke box.

Great sound...noticeably better than my last receiver. My last receiver was fine, but it couldn't do Dolby Digital Plus, nor did it support HDMI. I didn't expect it, but this receiver sounds much better. I only wish that Sony equipment would play nicer with non-Sony equipment.

I love this receiver. It has full 7.1 sound and all the basics I need for my theater setup. The sound fields are very well set up and all are useful depending on what you are listening to. My other (more expensive) receiver is a Pioneer and the majority of its sound fields are downright crude and irritating except for the "auto" setting. The Sony setup menu could be a little more user friendly. The auto speaker setup with the microphone seems to work well. Speaker outputs aren't quite as configurable as I'd like but that's not a big deal since my speakers are well matched to begin with. The FM sensitivity is merely adequate, as are most tuners these days, but who listens to FM radio at home anymore?
Overall this is a great receiver for the money - everything I need without all the bells and whistles I rarely would have used anyway. This is my second Sony receiver. The first one lasted for many years of trouble free service. As simple as this one is I expect it to last quite awhile as well.

I am returning my second receiver. Both have had the same issue, randomly shuts off. I enjoy playing games and if you're a gamer you could see the frustration in this. I'm getting a third one sent, hopefully this one will last longer that 30 days. I honestly should just purchase a different one.

Great receiver for the price. I really like that you can press one button on the remote and be at different components IE: Sat/TV, Game or Blu ray.
All of the HDMI connections are great to have. Got a Roku hooked up in HD and 5.1 surround and it sounds great as well as all the other surround components hooked up. Nice receiver.

Good unit. Set up was easy and thank God the remote has been simplified and is easy to use. There is a port for your iPhone to play through the system. There is plenty of power and 4 hdmi inputs for other devices. All in all a good unit for the price. I think there is a newer one with Bluetooth out now.

I own a couple of these Sony's in addition to three more expensive Yamaha receivers. This Sony will serve your needs should 4 HDMI inputs be enough for your needs and you do not need to power large powerful speakers. My primary entertainment locations at a minimum require 5 HDMI inputs and more power thus I chose the more expensive and powerful Yamaha receivers. That being said, this Sony has served me well in its role within a couple bedrooms. Good receiver for the buck.

I bought this to replace an aging STR-DE875. I wanted a receiver that had HDMI inputs so I could get rid of my old HDMI switch, and get rid of my old Radio Shack Toslink AV switch. For the most part this unit does the trick. One nice surprise is that this will provide you with PnP for each device connected to an HDMI input. My only gripe would be that you can't move the PnP window, nor can you decide which HDMI input gets displayed. For example, I had my HTPC, my Roku and my Boxee TV all connected to the Sony. Since the Roku and Boxee never shut off, their window would always displayed when the Preview button is clicked. Since Preview mode isn't a live stream but instead more like a screen capture every so many seconds, it was annoying to see an image that pauses all the time. Because I like my screensaver and want to enjoy it while watching TV, I ended up connecting just my HTPC to the Sony, the other devices are connected back to the HDMI switch then to the Sony. Since the switch doesn't send anything over HDMI when it's not in use, the Sony only sees the HTPC signal so then only displays that in Preview mode.
I also like that I got this for $65 less than it's currently priced at :)

I may gotten a defective Sony (STR-DH740) receiver. While that's not unheard of in any brand name, this model had all the features I wished for, and more. I have two Sony DVD players and a Sony big screen, so of course I would look at Sony receivers first. All Sony stuff, all linked together with hi-speed HDMI cables, what could possibly go wrong? How about everything? Amazon's product technicians were (are) fabulous, patient people. I talked to two different gentlemen, four different times in two weeks. I wished these guys lived next door, as one day this unit would work as designed, and the next day, not. That was frustrating. I contacted Amazon for a return of a defective item, and within days my money was refunded. At that point I bought a Yamaha, and guess what! Everything works! They were hooked up identically. So obviously I just got a Sony lemon. Again, Amazon was truly amazing!

This receiver fits my needs perfectly. I needed A-B speaker switching and 5.1 surround, which this unit has. Although I didn't need video switching, I ended up configuring it this way because the receiver setup is all done with on-screen menus on the tv.

this unit has screw type jacks for the speaker wire, instead of push pins, very slow process, and when turning on the unit, it makes a pop sound, then about 10 seconds later it finally turns on, kind of annoying, but the price was right, Best Buy had it for 299. I know the 2014 model has made a couple of changes, but the price shoots up, all in all, 4 stars.

I purchased this unit to replace one that did not have HDMI capability. The main problem I had was trying to get my DVD player to work with the component audio/video inputs. I never could get it to work, so purchased a newer DVD player with HDMI capability. I still could not get the VHS player (yes, I still have one) to work for the same reason (component audio/video), so ended up connecting it direct to the TV (fortunately, it still has component audio/video inputs).

Works great in our basement theatre room. It's kind of complicated though, if the kids mess with the settings. we don't know how to put them back. We just unplug it and wait a few minutes for it to re-set.

I got this along with energy micro rc speakers. I was never very satisfied with the sound and very disappointed. I would hear distortion with the amp up above 65 and it seemed to be getting worse. I brought my friends amp over and it sounded awesome. His was a denon. My amazon return period was over so I sent it to sony. They told me that they heard no problem. I hooked it up and it was still distorting. I sent it in again and the told me the same thing. I would also give sony's repair center 1 star. I will never buy a sony again. So you know it had it hooked up to a sony tv and blu ray.

Amazing for the price. If you're looking for a budget 7.2, this is a great deal. I would definitely recommend this receiver. If you're an audiophile you shouldn't be on this page, so leave. If you want all the bells and whistles, you need to leave too.
Sony, in my experience, has always put out high quality even for their low end electronics. Great sound, power and DSP! Comes with the auto setup mic which works great.

I replaced a Yamaha surround sound receiver which I had purchased several years ago. It did not have HTMI inputs and I wanted to get rid of my composite video cables. It works great and was very easy to set up. I can also control it with my Comcast remote. A good value for the price.

First great price, fast delivery, great sound. Sony has always been a trusted brand. I have owned a Sony, onkyo and Technics in the past. I am a little new to the home theater scene, so setup was pretty confusing. I am pretty computer savvy and I used to be big into stereos in my younger days. I even used to build home speakers and car speakers for friends and family, yet I found this stereo or these news home theater stereos very hard to program. First, I found it was better to NOT use the provided automatic microphone calibration. I was always used to having knobs or an equalizer to setup sound. Well, seems this is no longer needed. So, after hooking up my speakers (Paradigm ) and all cables, setup is now performed on your TV through the receiver, which is cool but took a while to figure out. But I now have everything setup, movies and TV sound fantastic. USB ipod outlet works great and all other systems seems to be working well.

So far a good receiver at just $211, hdmi works great the switching is smooth. A after calibrating the sound is pretty darn good running on 7.1 setup.

This was a great reciver, however mine blew the trebble channel after about a month of use. I was only pushing two polk audio tower speakers and a center. So, if you're running serious speakers this reciver is not for you

Brand new out of the box and it won't send a video signal to the tv from the blu-ray player. I played a movie and the sound worked great, but something is wrong with it allowing the video signal to pass through to the tv. I tried several different cables and spent lots of time going through the menu to see if something was turned off. Today I took it to a Sony approved repair shop and have to wait at least two weeks to get it back. This is very frustrating, but I can't say it is the first time I have had a Sony Receiver do this to me. I contacted their customer support and they don't offer anything in the way of coupons or gift cards for this inconveinence. Their response was that the repairs would be free of charge. Thanks Sony! I don't know why I continue to be loyal to them.

I bought this receiver to replace a 10 year old Sony STR-DE885 receiver which is still performing flawlessly somewhere else in the house. I needed to connect my Sont BD player, PS3 and PC via HDMI for display on my Epson home theater projector. This receiver is unable to display a video image when switching to the BD player or PS3 using "deep color" setting. The video output is completely unwatchable until the deep color setting is turned off. I tried changing to high speed HDMI cables as this is the main solution recommended by Sony but still the video problem persists. I did not have this problem before when my BD player and PS3 were connected to a simple HDMI switch. I really wanted this receiver to work given the low price and features offered. All other features on this receiver work as good as my old STR-DE885.

This is one awesome, receiver. My 3rd sony receiver. Took a while to figure it out, but that's the fun of it. My last two lasted about 8 years, everyday abuse, guess I'm good with that, for the price. Any other receiver with all these functions cost plenty more! Just one thing, I wish the USB hook- up was in back of the receiver, would look better. If you buy one, be patient and don't be afraid to call teq support, this receiver allows you to hook up many different ways.

If you have not purchased Sony sound systems in a few years, then it is time to take a look. If you own a Sony television, then you really should consider staying with the brand for the sound system. This system is easy to install, has some really nice features regarding setting up the sound in your room, and has outstanding sound for the price. I owned an STR-DH820, and the Blu-ray plug on it went bad. I was going to get a new STR DH840, but I really did not need the Wi-Fi features in it, so I went down a notch. This was a wise decision, because I did not lose any volume or quality of sound with this new system, and it fit nicely with the rest of my system components. It is worth the money by far, and getting it for $223 beat going to Best Buy by over $100 at the time that I purchased it. Thanks Sony!

Just got this receiver as an upgrade from my Yamaha rx-v461.
I love my Yamaha but recently also got some floor towers and it was not able to power them well enough.
Plus I wanted to take advantage of some thing w/HDMI pass through for the convenience of cable management.
Love this thing! It really brought out the quality in my Klipsch 7.1 set up.
My new Klipsch towers sound just amazing with this receiver!
In no way am I saying that Sony is better than Yamaha and vs. but I paid a decent price for this receiver in relation to the lower end Yamaha one. My point though is that for the price of this Sony it's a heck of a bargain.
Visually the receiver looks very sleek and smooth.
Set up is fairly easy thanks to the GUI.
Another plus, I'm all ready for 4K pass through if the dang things ever become affordable of course!
All in all, I'm very pleased with this gadget and thanks to Amazon for taking care of my as a customer as I had an issue with the order the first time but they went out of there way and made it right! Thanks Amazon!

I have had this receiver for a while now and have had little time to change much but I did get in there and poke around. This receiver has been working absolutely GREAT!
I'm now powering some Klipsch RF tower speakers (can't remember model) and this bad boy gives enough power to blast those bad boy's. My entire house now shake's with the set up I have. I'm only using 5.1 right now as I'm constrained to running wires in my sucky low ceiling house (I tried and failed running the lines). Any way I'm very please with this Sony receiver and don't see enough people give Sony credit on their receivers. Cheers!

Works just fine in my living room providing great sound. It's not a high-end amplifier but it definitely worth the bucks. It provides very nice, clear sound, loud enough for my not-that-small living room setup.

This product started flaking out after about 2 months (after the warranty period of course). The menu options, volume, will often change from English to a bunch of random pixels, not Chinese but you know... I can't read it so it might as well be Chinese. So here I am 30 days after the warranty is done checking what the warranty period is and finding I am out of luck. The product still works well enough but I am having some problems with the ARC HDMI and I am now thinking this receiver is to blame because much like the English/Chinese, the ARC HDMI works sometimes and not others.

Great product, unvelibable smooth sound. Connect with good cables or the system or expect to have problems. I have problems and did not know how to handle it. So expending $20 or so is money well expend.

This is a bust. It won't push power and audio through to 60" or surround sound. I ve trouble shot the system and while running a 50 ft hdmi I believe much of my problems exist from this. Going with Yamaha and see if I have more success. If I'm wrong I'll retract this soon.

I am not sure how, but I got this for less than $220 on Amazon Prime! I used the savings to get overnight delivery so we will have surround sound for the season 4 GoT premiere.
If you don't have HDMI, then this is not the receiver for you. No legacy video connectors other than composite (an who would be using that anyway?). It has both optical and digital audio connectors. It replaced an older Onkyo TR-NR 6XX receiver that was dying/dead. I must admit that the Sony is much simpler to set up than the Onkyo. The sound quality is very good. HDMI pass-through works as advertised. And best of all, it works well with my Logitech Harmony 700 remote.
If you don't have HDMI, then this is not the receiver for you. No legacy video connectors other than composite (an who would be using that anyway?). It has both optical and digital audio connectors. I could not be happier with this receiver. It produces excellent sound quality, was easy to hook up and set up. The auto configure for the speakers was great! This is a perfect start to a VERY good home theater system.

I won't be very helpful with any type of technical review, however I can say that I am very happy with what my receiver puts out for my surround sound needs. What a difference it has made for viewing movies, blu-ray dvd's, and watching television! Very affordable and easy to use.
