everything seems to be working correctly even though i am only using a 5.1 setup the sound is awesome. was easy to setup only took 30 mins.i would recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a decent entry level receiver for there audio setup or a replacement receiver.it doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles but it does what it is supposed too perfectly so far.figured the last Sony receiver we had lasted us 12 years so we would go with them again. good price for what your getting.

I read the reviews before purchasing this receiver, turn your stereo or cd player on , set sound field to "2ch st" , then push the amp menu button to level, scrole down to fl and fr speakers and turn up to 9 or 10, here you can adjust all speakers. then go to audio and scrole down to auto volume and turn to "on" ,use caution ,make sure your master volume is turned down. Then go to equalizer and adjust bass and treble to your sound preference. now you have just opened up your 145 watts. If you dont want to blow your speakers ,go back and turn down the level to what ever you dare to krank master volume to. I have 2 400 watt jensons hooked up and it will slam them, i am now getting 2 1000 watt tech pro speakers to hook up.

This is more complicated and slower to operate opening door etc. Overall they seem to get cheaper in quaility and break down of fail quicker than they used to. This one replaces a failed Sony less than two years. So fingers crossed it hangs in there longer this time. We aren't looking for fancy just solid quality we can depend on. Since we aren't hard on our electronics it's clear they just aren't paying attention to anything but making them cheaper and cheaper. Sony you were always our favorite brand sorry to see you are joining the others and letting us down.

I am satisfied with the new receiver except for one issue that I cant seem to change. When I turn up the volume on the receiver the volume level comes up on the TV screen and then blacks out whatever is being watch which then causes the show that your watching to have to reload. If you happen to be watching Netflix it will actually end whatever you are watching and you then have to go back into the menu and re-select the show you were watching and resume playing it. I haven't been able to find anything telling me how to stop it from coming up on the screen. Maybe someone reading this review could give some input.

Look closely before you buy. While the sound of this Sony amplifier is very good, it only has ONE OUTPUT! That's right, ONE, and that's an HDMI. So if you want to use a set of wireless headphones to watch TV, forget it. Well, that's not entirely true. You can use an adapter plug and hook up to the headphone jack on the front of the unit, but when you do, it cuts off the sound to all the speakers so if you are using your headphones no one else can hear anything. If you want to hook up any kind of recording device, ie; cassette machine, tape recorder, etc. you can't. There is no dedicated audio out. Just a heads up in case output options might be important to you.

on screen menus gets corrupted occasionally, but switching inputs a few times seems to fix it. Anyone else have this issue? Other than that this is a great receiver, Although i wish it didn't say "No signal" on its LCD even while its clearly displaying an image.

Honestly, I couldn't believe I was getting all these features for this low of a price, so when I first bought it I thought there would be some sort of "Surprise" tradeoff, when I got it, but there has been none so far. Everything works perfectly the sound is perfect, my speakers are happy and the wife is happy. What more could I ask for?

I'm replacing an older Yahama receiver and so far I am very impressed. Overall, the audio sounds better filling the room, setup was very easy using the supplied mic, and well, it just looks nice! I'm running 5.1 with 4 speakers high up in the side walls, a few inches from the ceiling, a center speaker under the TV, and subwoofer in the corner.
Cons: when the system turns off & on, there is a humming sound from the subwoofer for a couple seconds. It's not that big of a deal so I'm keeping the review at 5 stars.

Receiver has plenty of power since some sources have low audio for video signals. Anybody with netflix knows this already. Great for small theater room when pushing bigger speakers in full 5.1 or 7.1 or 7.2. Remote works other sony bluray 3d players, so if the remote goes on the blink for the player the amp remote works fine for most of the controls. Sound fields are easy to adjust along with speaker levels, time delay, etc. Just take you time and adjust everything from the beginning before you start using it and expect it to meet your desires acousticaly. If using digital input just set to digital on sound field and everything should be fine. Sound field control is right next to volume on remote so it is easy to find you preference. The manual is typical sony confusion with back and forth page info, so spend some time on the manual before you even look at the receiver. Has mic for adjusting speaker levels works fine, but I still tweek rear speakers. Can use high and low front or second set of surround but not both at same time.

Let me start by saying I am not an expert but I have installed all my computer, video and audio systems. I am pretty familiar with system installations. In fact I have previously installed a 7.1 Onkyo system which worked perfectly. Unfortunately the installed system was older and did not support newer components that used HDMI connections, so I had to upgrade.
All components (Cable,TV,BluRay) were connected to the Sony by HDMI. The speaker wiring was snap since it was already in place. Turned it on and got nice sound but only from the front speakers. Bigger issue was when I tried to play the BluRay. I actually had to turn off the Sony system in order to get sound, let alone surround sound. Then the wheels really came off - I tried to read the manual. It is virtual gibberish. The instructions made no sense. They seemed to reference items that did not apply or sent you around in circles that resolved nothing. I had my son look them over (he is an engineer) and he laughed at them. We then tried to work the system on our own. The system played a test tone from each speaker but when we first installed the system I kept getting the message that some speakers were not installed. A number of the control buttons simply did not work.
At this point (many hours later) we gave up. Poor instructions combined with a system that appeared to be broken was more than we could overcome. I sent it back.

The receiver is fine. It works well with my Sony TV and Sony BluRay. However, at 60 days the audio on the SAT/CATV HDMI quit working. I changed it over to the CD input. Hopefully this input port will last longer.

We updated from a Sony home theater system to this receiver. We were able to use the speakers that came with the old system but we did have to purchase a new subwoofer (this requires an active sub and our old one was a passive sub). Speakers sound fine, new sub sounds fine and the ability to easily switch from TV, to cable, to dvd is also very nice.
With our old system, I was constantly having to grab the remote and either turn up or turn down the sound whenever I changed channels - I am able with the correct setting to change from one channel to another - or from cable to dvd - and have the sound be fairly consistent.
Setup was fairly easy and the auto balancing of the speakers and sub worked very straight forward. thanks,

The Sony receiver operates as advertised! Shipping was fast and the setup was easy. I love when I turn on my DVD player how the receiver turns on automatically and adjusts to the DVD setting! I would definitely recommend this unit.

Pros: Low price, Banana plug inputs, Crisp sound. OK if you ONLY Need a TV surround sound system.
Cons: Incredibly complex to operate. Confusing remote. Very few ports. No monitor output ports. Must have TV attached to tell what you are doing. Not a good choice for an all-around stereo system.
Bought this to replace a whole-house stereo system. BIg mistake. This is clearly ONLY designed for a TV Surround Sound application. It does have four HDMI input ports, but little else. No monitor out for outdoor speakers or a tape deck. Few non-HDMI inputs.
Virtually everything is operated through a sparse remote. All feedback is through their On Screen Display, so you have to have a TV attached to change any settings. The unit does have a USB port on the front, but to control an iPod, you have to have the remote. To see what you are doing, you have to have the TV attached.
I would only recommend this product to someone who is ONLY using for a simple surround sound system. Don't consider it for a stereo setup. Don't consider it if you are trying to drive multiple sets of speakers. The price is greate for a 7.2 and sound is crisp, but the lack of inputs and outputs and the dependence on the On Screen Display really limit its application.

I HAVE THIS UNIT AND IT WORKS WELL WITH ONE RESERVATION. SONY HAS A BAD HABIT OF RATING THEIR AMPLIFIERS AT 0.9 % HARMONIC DISTORTION ONE CHANNEL DRIVEN. THIS PUMPS UP THE NUMBERS WHICH THE ADVERTISED POWER IS RATED, BUT IN USE, WHEN ALL CHANNELS ARE DRIVEN THEY USE A COMMON POWER SUPPLY AND CAPACITOR, SO THE POWER AVAILABLE TO EACH CHANNEL IS SUBSTANTIALLY LESS. ALSO, THE FTC STANDARD FOR AMPLIFIER COMPARISON IS 20-20,000 CYCLES AT A NEGLIGIBLE HARMONIC DISTORTION USUALLY IN THE RANGE OF 0.08 %. THIS MEANS THE AMP IS CAPABLE OF PLAYING MUSIC AT THE ADVERTISED FULL WATTAGE. ANYTHING MORE THAN THIS LOW DISTORTION RATING DELIVERS LESS CLEAN WATTAGE FOR MUSIC AMPLIFICATION. Had everything EXCEPT the operating manuals for the receiver or the remote. I wired up the receiver between my HDTV (used only as a monitor) and my computer.HDMI both ways. If there is no audio signal being generated the receiver turns off my monitor after about ten minutes very very annoying.

I am very happy with the Sony STR-DH740. I replaced a 20 year old Sony STR-GX59ES still in perfect working condition. This receiver has a lower price partly because it has no network capability, no bluetooth, etc.; I have that with my other devices including Chromecast. I am using this as a 5.1 system, so I was able to bi-amp the front tower speakers. I recommend banana plugs for speaker connections.

We got this unit through Amazon (sold by Tri State Camera!) a few weeks back. Sadly the unit is defective (the front speaker connection is bad, does not work). I tried hooking up other speakers that were working on other speaker connections and there wasn't any sound. I was also getting a crackling noise from my center speaker (even when hooked up to other speakers). I expected a better quality sound from Sony. Currently, we are trying to return the item (which should have been very smooth with Amazon: from past 5 years of personal experience). However we are getting redirected to Tri State Camera who are asking a 15% restocking fee and mail at your own cost!!! For a product that is defective ??? What happened to Amazon's customer satisfaction? Amazon should reconsider doing business with Tri State Camera. I have always been satisfied with Amazon's return policy and never had trouble like this. I LOVE purchasing things off Amazon and do so almost every week. Very rarely do I return items, but sometimes things like defective and not as described items need to be returned! Think twice before purchasing from Tri State Camera. They will not let you return without breaking your bank a little more.

I suggested this unit for a client to be placed in his pool house. We wanted good power, not a lot of bells and whistles - just great sound. Well, when we plugged in my iPod and rocked with Creed, Pink, Pink Floyd I was amazed at the extremely clean and fully powered sound from both the Take 5.1 Classic system in the pool house, then I was blown away by the Klipsch outdoor speakers which rocked this several acre amphitheater surrounding a pool. I design and install systems for a living and without a doubt this avr is the best bang for the buck you can possibly find. No it does not have everything (hence the 4 stars) but if you only have $250-300 to spend on your avr you could not find a better sounding, phenomenally powered machine! I am not a Sony fan- but maybe I will change - at least in this case I would fight to the death for this killer amp for the price!

Not exactly high-end but well worth the money - absolutely. I needed an amp to run my home theatre system in our family room (speaker A) and my central audio throughout the house (speaker B). It does that well! One of the few amps in the price category to offer this feature, has enough power to run everything at reasonable level. Easy to operate, loads of HDMI connectors but a little clumsy speaker terminals, unless you use dual banana plugs of course.

Receiver works great! This is the first receiver I have ever bought. So I just wanted to explain something to the newbies like me. AV receivers receive both audio and video input and output both audio and video. So basically, my Blu-ray player is connected to the AV receiver via HDMI, then the sound goes out to my 7.1 sound system and a separate HDMI goes out from the receiver to my projector. I know this sounds silly and stupid to lots of people well versed in this stuff but I was a little unclear about it at first.

I didn't want anything to fancy just an amp too run a lot of speakers. This did the job it sounds good not perfect but good. It gets pretty loud too and I have yet to here any distortion out of it. I just wanted a 7.2 for music in my room and this does the job perfectly. Not the most beefy am but it has some power too it... warning though.... IT. WILL. NOT. DO. 145wx7 @ 6 ohms. Witch is fine because most new AV receivers have bs power ratings anyways. Nothing you can do about it... I'd say this is a 80wx7 @ 6 ohms... (haven't benched it yet just a guess) which is pretty good (: all and all awesome!

This is for a basement family room, did not need the latest and greatest just a decent receiver with power to run a 7.1 system. I only have 15 hours or so on the unit but so far it has meet my needs. This replaced a Onkyo TX-NR525 that failed after 1.5 hr. I plan to avoid Onkyo like the plaque as I've had issues with 2 out of 2 Onkyo receivers.

An excellent buy for the Christmas pricing of $223.00. It has many "bells and whistles". I only wish it had a component input so I can use my old DVR with it. Works very well with HDMI on TiVo, Blu-ray and to feed a computer picture to my HDTV. Word of warning: Be sure you use the latest (1.4) HDMI cable with a Blu-ray device. Otherwise, the unit will not "see" the 7.2 (3/4.1) audio outputted from the Blu-ray and will show it as 5.2 (3/2.1). Sony customer service is first rate and pointed this out to me. I ordered the 1.4 cable from Amazon and everything is now great

Bought this from Amazon during the time period when Sony was running a $75 discount which brought the price down to $223. Incredible buy at that price point. Easy to set up. Sounds great. Running an Apple TV, Wii, and Blu Ray player into the receiver and loving the results. My only negative remark, which is why the 4 stars, is that there are only 4 HDMI inputs. That's pretty skimpy.
Also, for me, a big positive in this receiver is that it isn't full of all kinds of internet crap. I don't need or want all that stuff. I just want something that provides 7.2 surround. This receiver does the trick.

i had high hopes but it just could not rock my 3 way 15 inch speakers might be fine with 6 ohm little speakers and 2 subs i guess im sticking to antique stereos with 100 watts per channel i hope this helps someone

This Sony receiver was exactly what I needed to replace an outdated receiver and upgrade my surround sound system, that consists of a Sony BluRay player and a 5 disk CD player, to include Apple TV. The set-up was easy and well explained in the owner's manual. Now I can easily listen to my iTunes downloads on surround sound.

After owning the Denon 1912 and having it crap out 18months later, this Sony at the same price point blows it away. The Denon is in the garbage.
The Sony works better, easier to setup and has an owners manual that actually does not require a technical degree to decipher. It has more features and is easier to use. Just a better product at this price point.
I attached my energy 5.1 speakers, ran the easy setup and it just worked and I did not need to read the manual. I loved it so much I bought one for the Den as well. I currently own two of them.
l am an engineer by trade but choose not to engineer at home and this product did not require my professional skills.

I bought this to replace an aging Pioneer receiver that at the time I purchased it was considered very high quality. But after hooking up this one and doing the easy (their word, it was practically automatics it was so simple) speaker calibration, we coulnd't believe the difference in the sound. This sounded fantastic. I'm extremely pleased.

Receiver hard to setup. Manual hard to read. Still don't have receiver setup like i wont. Can't get setup menu to apperar on my TV. I had to use the remote control and display on the receiver to get a bacic setup.

Nice value for this middle of the road receiver. Install was easy with plug style speaker wire connection and the power it puts out is good. nice for movies and music both. Set up was easy enough as well with auto calibration. would get 5 stars except the user interface is clunky and not at all visually pleasing. reminds me of MS DOS operating system on a commadore 24 old school computer. not up to par with what u expect in 2014. Otherwise it does great and I'm glad I got this for the value.

Excellent receiver! Easy to setup and compatible with my sony blue ray player, samsung tv, and cable system. Great price, I would highly recommend this product to same one looking for a receiver without the high price.

Wish the receiver includes sets of banana plugs to make it easy to connect speakers or surround system wiring to it.

this a great 7.2 surround without some of the bells and whistles. i wanted it for a home theater system only not other uses such as whole house speaker etc. it was a lost less cost in doing exactly what i wanted . to use a unviversal remote takes a little longer to set up as the code are not normal but in random searching with a universal remote will find a number that works

1st one I bought was doa, sent back to amazon and they sent out a replacement, which has worked flawlessly with heavy use since I received it on 02-17-2014.
