Everything is fine but really these units are so complicated that simple changes require getting out the guidebook every time. While the complexity of options make it possible to do everything, it seems to me that the engineers might figure out what 95% of folks are going to do with it, and make these functions the most intuitive and obvious, while still retaining the functions that a few might use.
Overall it works fine, although the sound is not as natural as the Yamaha line-up. I have multiple Sony components so it is nice to be able to get them to coordinate through the HDMI cable and turn on/off together.

Got this Sony to replace an Okyo that was becoming a bit....inconsistent with how it sounds, and what video it decides to show. Installing it was pretty easy. Sound feels like it has a little more oomph than the old Onkyo. I also like that it has 4k support, so I feel a little future-proofed.

Serious issues syncing with Samsung tv. This receiver won't allow u to switch from dvd to TV without having to switch ch source on ur tv. I had this one in replacement of a pioneer that I lost in a water damage and I'm very disappointed. Sometimes it gets hot and the. Shuts down for no reason while being placed in a well vented place...

This receiver has performed better than I expected. Setup is quite simple and the menu is easy to understand. I would suggest reading the manuel and having it next to you during setup. I have all video going thru the receiver and it makes it so much easier and it has performed flawlessly. Sound is great and has plenty of power to bounce you off the couch during a war movie. I have always purchased a sony receiver and have always been pleased. Only negative is the mic for setup. It didn't work as well as I would have thought. It did help with the distance of the speakers. Personally I like adjusting the setting myself.

Get's the job done okay. Setup wasn't tricky, however BRAVIA sync seems little weird. Sound quality is great.
Now annoying features:
1) on the power up every time it is in mute - gotta unmute every single time
2) when using analog RCA cable connection between the unit & DVD player, every single time when user wanna adjust the volume - signal from VIDEO switches to HDMI 1. Then, you gotta go into inputs of TV and re-select back to VIDEO 2. It's annoying actually.
3) Speaker adjustments in setup are little tricky. I mean it can be done, but expected little better workmanship from SONY software developers.
Now annoying features:

I bought based on prior reviews. The hook-up and and set-up with our new home theater system was a breeze - except one of our brand new speakers didn't work. It was not the receiver. We had another speaker sent it works fine.
The set-up is a breeze with the sensor that you place in the listening area and it reads all the audio signals from all 7 speakers and subwoofer - great feature.

Did a ton of reading about home theater receivers before landing on this one. Now that I have it all hooked up I'm really loving it.
The main reason I love it is the HDMI audio sharing (ARC) to the TV. My TV only has 2 HDMI ports, and its only audio out was optical. So I previously had it set up with the optical feeding out to a digital-to-analog converter, which then fed into a really cheap stereo. And I had to buy a 3-port HDMI hub because I had run out of HDMI ports on the TV, meaning we had to go switch the hub every time we needed to change between chromecast / apple tv / wii u.
With this receiver, it's 4 HDMI inputs and a single HDMI output to the TV! No more messing with optical cable.
It sounds awesome! I am not an audiophile, so I'm sure that more expensive receivers sound better, but I'm not sure how. This one sounds great.

The first one I received hummed constantly. They sent a replacement. It hums all the time. Even hums when it's not plugged into speakers. Great price, but for a reason.

This is very nice receiver with lots of great features. It is very intuitive and easy to install. The sound quality is amazing. I'm currently running a 7.1 system (more than enough), although it has a capacity for a 7.2 system. However, I couldn't imagine having two sub-woofers! As much as I would love it, my house couldn't handle it, my wife would disown me, and my neighbors would exile me. The system has many audio field options for your listening preference. Additionally, it has a "Pure" option where the internal lights are dimmed to reduce interference. I would definitely recommend this receiver if you're looking for a solid receiver with great sound and without all of the additional apps and features of pricier models.

Very pleased with my purchase.This AV performs exceptionally well, can't wait to get my Yamaha Subwoofer connected It out performs my old Onkyo . My speakers are Energy x 5 and a Energy subwoofer . So with the extra sub I think this is going to be awesome. Imported to South Africa from USA and with all the postage and duties it was still cheaper than buying here. Only thing I had to buy a 220v-110v step down transformer which works extremely well (500 watt). If I bought this from the UK that would not have been a problem as they are also 220v.
Used to have an Onkyo AV Receiver which packed up. Could not get spares for it so I stayed away from Onkyo. The agents attitude in SA stinks. Not even prepared to talk to me, spoke to one of his staff members who clearly does not have any technical know how.

I actually loved it when I first bought it back in March of this year. Now here comes the " but " now the HDMI out to my TV is loose and I'm constantly having to bang the unit around to get the picture back on my TV. This started about two months ago. First I thought it was a cable problem so I called Comcast. I guess the technician jiggled it the right way and it worked but not for long after the service guy left. Then I thought it may be an HDMI cable problem so I bought a new one but still had the same problem. So, I took it in for service. Naturally it worked at the service place so the guy there said it must be the HDMI input on my TV. That I should try another input which I did but still have the same problem so it's not my TV. Now every time the TV goes black I either have to bang the receiver around or play with the HDMI cable until the picture comes back. I'm not very happy at all :(

Very good receiver for the price. Was easy enough for my teenage son to set up, although it took a lot of concentration and several hours. Great sound.

I like the features and quality of sound as I am a picky listener. Former sound engineer so I do like my music clean and loud. This puppy delivers both. I'm running 9 speakers total using the 7.2 setup with two sub woofers. I havent cranked it wide open yet as I'm afraid it might blow some of my speakers that are not able to handle the power. Volume goes up to 70 and I've had it at 50 and it was so loud I couldn't even yell loud enough for my friend to hear me with out cupping the ear. Amazing sound and I love all the HDMI inputs.

I upgraded to this Receiver from a much older Sony Receiver I purchased well over 10 years ago. The old receiver still works great, but lacked the support for HDMI which all new electronics mainly use now. My old setup forced me to run all my devices into the TV and then a digital optical audio cable from the TV to the old receiver. Not exactly the most efficient way of doing it. Now that my devices are going directly to the receiver, I ensure myself the best audio quality possible.
Switching the new receiver with the old was a breeze and should be for anyone that is moderately tech savvy. The instruction manual was also very clear with good pictures so even someone doing a new install should find it easy to follow. The auto-calibration feature was a welcome addition. Not only did the setup take only a few minutes, but it made my old speakers sound like I just bought them off the store room shelf. Consider this before deciding to replace them before testing them on this receiver.
In regards to the iPod/iPhone/iPad integration, I think it was a bit sub par. Using the receiver remote to navigate your music was a bit cumbersome, and was prone to a few freezes. I suggest you just control your music selections directly from your device. Sounds was fantastic however.

Has been a good replacement for my complicated Denon. Noticed improvement in surround immediately. Easy to set up and make adjustments to your speakers. All your HDMI devices connect to it and it switches itself as you turn them on and off. Hooked up to 7 speakers and powered subwoofer. Glad I bought it. IPhone attaches by wire, not Bluetooth.

I'm not much of an audiophile, but I can say that Sony has a great receiver right here. This is my second one (1st was used and broke), I have had zero problems with it and it powers all of my speakers nicely.

This receiver works great with my 7.1 speaker system which includes 4 recessed ceiling speakers, 1 floor woofer (system has speaker inputs for 2 woofers), 2 Left right mounted floor speakers. I have a bluray, an xbox 360, and the cable box connected directly to the receiver via the hdmi inputs making it very easy to switch among the 3 units. The setup was easy. I am very happy with this choice.

Great upgrade!
Works great only after reading the manual, understanding the manual, and adjusting the settings to what your needs are.
It may require some work, but is well worth it.
Several things I like a lot on this receiver are:
1) HDMI inputs
2) Ability to interface with my TV and Blue Ray player, and one control the other assuming compatibility with a smart mode that attached items must have. Most new players etc. have that ability. Mine did.
Turn off the TV and it turns off the Sony Receiver. With smart connected items no need to change input on the TV, the receiver does it for you (through the receiver). The remote also has the buttons to chose input.
3) The receiver does not have to be on to just watch TV. It has a pass thru ability to allow you just to watch and use the TV speakers only. It has to be in stand by mode not completely off.
The other item is the ability to not to use the TV speakers when the sound system is on. That's what I lacked on the last one. It was a pain to dial down the TV when the system was on.
Teamed up with my Yamaha 5.1 speakers (6 ohm) set including powered sub woofer it produces a great movie theater surround sound. I am sure there are better sets /combos out there but bang for the buck its a very good system.
I am not an audiophile but I love the pass thru feature.

Needed an inexpensive receiver in the den to work with the TV - works well and is easy to use. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because one of my HDMI video sources would not switch through it properly (I was able to make it work through the TV instead). Sound is decent (I don't use this for critical listening so I can't really comment on accuracy, etc). Set up was fairly straight forward, and it has been working reliably for a couple weeks now.

The marketing for this receiver is dishonest. It does not support HDMI 2.0 or 4k. I tried to hook up 4k input through this receiver, and it did not work until I connected directly to the TV. When I contacted Sony's customer support for advice on how to make it work, they were clueless on how to even answer the most basic questions. Even if the receiver did not support HDMI, it could potentially support a lower framerate at 4k, but even that was not an option. Do not buy this TV with any hope of using it for 4k, or getting good customer support from Sony.

I was originally looking at sound bars. TV's now are nice and thin, but the sound quality suffers greatly. I wasn't thrilled with any of the sound bars I looked at so I decided to look at a new receiver. My old one didn't have the proper connections to use with our TV. This one is great. I connected it to our LG TV with the ARC HDMI. It turns on automatically with the TV, and the TV remote controls the volume. Plus I'm using my speakers now, and it sounds much better than any of the sound bars I'd checked out.

Good receiver with lots of connections for both HDMI and Audio. It has a feature I don't know if I like or hate. When you first turn it on, it mutes the audio and you have to hit volume up to get sound. Sometimes I forget, and put the remote down once I've got everything started. Then realize, oops and have to grab the remove again. It is nice not to get blasted if you've had the volume up for another system.
Good power for my living room. I have a wireless rear channel laying on the floor behind my couch. I was able to use the height adjustment to set it that low and the surround is up where I would expect it, really nice.

four hdmi ports, and auto senses to know when a device is turned on. When I turn on my blue ray player, the stereo automatically turns on.. nice feature.. Sounds great. Easy set up

This is a terrible receiver, I bought it and when I was watching a movie or playing video games the receiver would cut out on me and I would have to turn it on again. Hang your head in shame Sony. I wish I could give it negative stars

First receiver would cut out in middle of movie ( Rec. Display showed 'Device'.). Great sound but bad receiver. Amazons great replacement policy sent a replacement within a few days. Haven't fully setup 2nd one, but beware: Some of these reviews are correct - be wary.

This device is very easy to set up. I have it connected to A 60" tv, PS3, Tablet PC, U-Verse box, & bluray player. The only reason I give it a 4 is I get an error that flashes when it the U-Verse it enabled. I don't get that from any other device.
The sound quality is great and the auto configuration is great.

Horrible piece of JUNK!! Had many problems with this receiver right out of the box, I really wanted to believe that the problems were in my cable box or some other cause. So I kept it a few days longer than I should. I finally returned it to Amazon for a refund minus a restocking fee.
I'm out of over $40.00 but I am relieved to be rid of this Sony piece of junk!!
I purchased a Yamaha A740 and am very satisfied.... What a difference!!
Sony's reputation is going down the drain, too bad I used to be a fan!

I was not expecting a system that would blow my ears off when i purchased this unit. But after setting it up in my bedroom entertainment center and making all the connections I found myself truly impressed. The sound is amazing. The system simply works. i did not have to spend my time setting up the unit and programming my remotes because of the Anynet+ on my TV and Blu-Ray player. In a little over an hour I had rewired my entire system and replaced almost all of my old connections with four single HDMI cables. The setup was very easy and involved nothing more complicated than following on-screen instructions and connecting a microphone to the receiver.
This is a terrific unit for the price and having the 4K pass-through will allow me to keep the system for a while until I can upgrade to a 4K television and Blu-Ray player. it was well worth the money.

Wow....hooked this up with the Onkyo skf 4800 floor speakers and the Yamaha nssp1800bl 5.1surround system.Holy smokes this thing rocks!!! Its easy to use and set up was simple. Only hang up i had was the receiver was set to BD when i first turned it on and couldn't get to auto program. Realized that the receiver had to be set to CATV/sat. For it to program (my mistake). Extremely happy with the sound of this system and the price!

how can anyone rate this over a one that knows anything about sound systems. this does not convert to 7.2 surround sound or 4k or any other than stereo. the sony people will say anything to sell this to you. if you talk to the sony tech person instead of the sales you will get a different response of what this truly doesn't do!!! I have a great speaker system too ($1200)

This receiver replaced a Pioneer that gave up the ghost after only a year of usage. (That receiver is here: Pioneer VSX-524-K Audio and Video Component Receivers)
I'm extremely happy with this receiver after 2 months. It's design in line with our other Sony receiver (Sony STRDH520 7.1 Channel 3D AV Receiver (Black) (Discontinued by Manufacturer)) purchased at the same time as the pioneer. It sounds great and I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a great receiver at a very solid value.
I'm extremely happy with this receiver after 2 months. It's design in line with our other Sony receiver (Sony STRDH520 7.1 Channel 3D AV Receiver (Black) (Discontinued by Manufacturer)) purchased at the same time as the pioneer. Reciever works great! Replaced an earlier Sony reciever for an upgrade to newer technology. The new automatic set up will display on both the face of the reciever and the tv screen when first setting up the unit. Calibration sequence is easy to ensure that you have perfect sound balance for your listening area.

works great. had a problem with the "ARC" but after much trouble found out it was a problem with the HDMI cable i was using. Some work and some don't. 1 out of 6 i have worked. I needed this unit because my new tv did not have an analogue audio output and my stereo did not have a fiber optic input.

This device sounded great, I have always liked Sony products. My issue was that it would shut off on it's own when I was using it. I thought it was the auto shut down (for lack of use) so I waited and I was actually using the device and it shut down. Then it wouldn't turn back on for a while. It wasn't heat or anything, I thought of that too. This happened more than once so I returned it.

Easy to set up and initially worked fine. HDMI pass through failed in first three months. I re-routed cable and DVD into TV and used the optical out to receiver. Optical input failed three months later. SONY quality isn't what it used to be!!! I'll never buy SONY again!
