PROS: Easy set up, lots of power, 7.2 (I don't have the subwoofer hooked up yet so cannot comment on this feature). Looks great, nice interface. Great, clean sound.
CONS: You need to get the volume into the 30s to get sound but there is plenty of headroom. Connections for speakers in the back are a bit tight, you will need a flashlight and patience
Really enjoying listening to music in my family room with this gorgeous component.
Well back to the Sony. I'm not an audiophile, and getting into my mid-to-late 30s … I'm sure some of my hearing is going (normal age range loss). And like I said, I was being cheap. I wanted a drop in replacement to my 7.1 Onkyo, for about $200-300. The only available product at this time, was this Sony unit. And it far exceed my expectations.
I'm not sure if there was additional problems with Onkyo or this is technology improvements - however re-watching shows and movies in 5.1 … I'm hearing sounds in the surround sound channels that I've never heard before. Also - a super annoying problem, that I've also notice with my parents Onkyo receiver (much older, non-HDMI, non-video, 5.1 ) - were the center channel seems overly low on volume, especially when the L/R channels come up in effects or sound track. This Sony, seems to have addressed those issue, and really brings out more of the dialog.
Finally, I swear, my initial reaction when I plugged it in was … wow … the picture/video looks better.
One feature that I haven't found on the Sony yet, that has been on the Onkyo's … is default power on volume level. The Sony is remembering the last volume setting, where I'd always have the Onkyo turn on at a lower volume level. I haven't determined if the Sony is missing this feature, or I just haven't found it yet.
I have for now a 5.1 Yamaha speakers.
The sound its great, I have my Mac, Xbox, and TV connected.
Pros: very easy installation, the auto calibration feature it's very useful.
Cons: the receiver menus are like 90's TV menus, msdos inspiration, very far to the others more user friendly menus. I have issues with my Mac sound and the receiver's standby mode,
POSITIVES: Does the job and sounds quite good. Automatic calibration worked well in a large room with a mixed bag of speakers - I have had no inclination to fine tune it yet. Seems to have ample power. Works with Netflix 5.1 DD+ from Roku 3. Remote fairly easy to use. FM works well.
NEGATIVES: Front panel top buttons have small lettering and are not illuminated, making them hard to read. No Phono Preamp. Power consumption in Standby with Pass Through On must be high, since the unit runs warm in this mode. (The manual does not show the consumption in this mode. I finally turned it off.) Volume control feels spongy with no momentum.
Overall, my old receiver looked and felt like a Lexus. This one feels like a Honda, but it seems to get the job done well.
Update: After about 2 months of experience now, I'm quite pleased with the 740's performance and relative simplicity of controls vs. my 10 year old high end Sony amp. I did add the following two widgets, which I am also very pleased with:
A - A Bluetooth Receiver so that I can play music from my tablet or phone. (about $28)
B - A Pyle Phono Preamp so that I could use my turntable (about $15).
Steve
Overall it was a great price, easy to set up, and works great.
I'm amazed a how much more distinct the voices are. The volume balance between actors voices and background music or sound effects isHUGELY better than the Denon. Great value
edit:Been a couple of weeks and I like it even more. The one REALLY cool feature is the PureDirect button. I like to watch the TV at low volume when the family is sleeping and the PureDirect accentuates voices and turns down the other frequency bands (or performs some sorta magic) to make this quiet but understandable.
Also...this unit understands the ARC output from my Sharp Aquos TV when using A NEW UP TO DATE hdmi cable, so all functionality is ....er...functioning.
It exceeds my needs and I am looking forward to many years of
enjoyment from it.
Am I nit picking..... maybe. Obviously all of my connections are done with dual male banana connectors that now have to be replaced with singles. Silly me, I thought I could just swap the 740 into place and be G2G. Now I have to wait for the single connectors to appear at my door!
The controller does not have a back light - bummer.
Using a speaker switch to go from high fronts to back surrounds depending on the movie. Neat! I recalibrate the speakers each time I switch setup because I haven't found a way to save the different settings. That may exist, but I haven't found it (yet?).
Not that it matters (I hope) but this doesn't weight much (seems well built though). The Sherwood is heavy beast and built like a tank and still going strong.
As I use this unit, I will write/modify my comments.
Would I buy this again - absolutely! Love the sound, automatic speaker setup and the look.
(Still keeping the Sherwood - Need the AC-3 RF for my laserdisk collection - Cats Don't Dance anyone?)
YST-SWO12 8" powered subwoofer, I think my neighbors like it too!
Swapped the speakers 1 for 1 from the older receiver, reprogrammed the remote. A little calibration and we were back in business.
The unit sounds great, looks good, and haven't had a hiccup since I've bought it.
I love the sound and the price. I did not need the network connectivity that appears to bring the price up.
This unit does a great job at one thing, home theater sound, and does it exceptionally well.
