Seagate DiscWizard:
Windows.
Maxtor.
Seagate.
Synology/QNAP/Drobo.

Reboot and select proper boot device and press any key."

In the past, I had much better luck with Seagate drives than with Western Digital. I think any more, they're pretty much on equal footing, with proponents and detractors for each brand. This review isn't so much about the drive itself as it is about trying to replace one under warranty. This isn't a sour grapes review, I'm only writing it to let others know what they can expect if they attempt to replace a drive under warranty. My existing drive failed Seatools, and was not repairable. Since I wasn't in any particular hurry to get the drive back, I got an RMA (order number) from Seagate, scrounged up a box and acceptable foam padding and shipped the original drive back on 12/15/2012. I received an acknowledgement that they had received my drive on 12/28/2012. The replacement was shipped on 1/3/2013 and was delivered on 1/9/2013. I ran Seatools short test, which passed. At this point I reloaded the OS and did all the updates to use as a testbed. A couple days later, I decided to run Seatools long test which takes approximately 2 ? hours to complete. At the end, the drive failed with something n the neighborhood of 100 bad blocks, which I repaired. I then re-ran the long test and had another 100 or so bad bocks, which I also repaired. I then attempted a full erase, which failed also. I attempted to contact tech support during their normal working hours via both live chat and phone. No one was available .At that point I decided to RMA this drive also. Rather than ship the drive back and wait for another, I decided to use the "Premium Advanced Replacement", which is supposed to include 2 day shipping and a prepaid return shipping label. The price is reasonable at $9.95, considering that the UPS shipping on the first drive was almost that much. I placed this order on 1/12/13.In the meantime, I decided to re-run Seatools long test and see how many failures the "repaired" drive had. It took 6 runs to get a no failures result, which is over 400 bad blocks. At the time I placed the order for the second warranty drive I didn't realize that Seatools stops at 100 or so bad blocks. I only figured that out later. In the over all scheme of things, I'm not sure how common that many bad blocks is, but I wasn't willing to accept a repaired drive with that many defects.Anyway, back to the saga... The 2nd replacement was finally shipped on 1/17/13 and arrived on 1/21/13.The bottom line is, so far I've spent about $20.00 on shipping, spent a lot of hours repairing an already repaired drive, and what I have now is a used drive that was sent back to Seagate for some unknown problem which I'll never fully trust. All that for a drive that I could probably buy new for $75.00. Thanks, but next time I'll take a pass on all this and go with new.The bottom line is that the drive is worth a 3, since I don't think WD drives are any better or worse. The warranty replacement process gets a very generous 2.
Length:: 1:02 MinsThis drive (the 750 GB version) failed completely in 8 days. It made the much reported, very loud clicking noise on day 7 and failed completely on day 8 with the same noise. Seagate's Seatools diagnostic utility said the drive was fine and passed all tests when I ran it after the loud noise on day 7 - it tempoarily worked for a brief period of time. The failure of Seagate's Seatools to report serious problems with it's own drives has also been much reported. And compounding that, Seagate states that if its diagnostics pass, then the drive is OK (!!!) - clearly and obviously not the case. This is the second recent Seagate hard drive to fail completely within one month on a PC I maintain. I have also had a Seagate Flex drive fail in 4 days. I maintain a total of about 12 PCs, a few from Dell, and only the recent Seagate drives have failed. And they have failed so soon after first use. I personally, and others I work with and have talked to, can unfortunately no longer trust any drive from Seagate. I haven't bought a Seagate drive in 18 months (not counting the failed Flex drive) due to the reported problems and won't until I am sure their problems are under control, but Dell continues to use them in their desktops and so I run into these failing drives. This Seagate that failed was in a RAID 0 array and could have lost the 800+ GBs stored on the array if it had not been all backed up to an external drive, a move I insisted on when I saw the drives were Seagate drives.I have added a video to let people hear the clicking sound the drive generally makes when it fails. If you hear this sound it may be too late to copy any data off it, but on both the failing Seagates I saw the drive came back for a day or two after the noise before failing completely (noise continuous, drive not operational at all). Absolutely stop putting any critical data on the drive, and NO MATTER what Seagate's diagnostic utility programs say: stop using the drive. The drive in the video passed Seagate's diagnostics, getting 100% green on every "test", when it temporarily worked after first making that noise. Please Seagate: fix the problems with your hard drives and make reliable drives again - I used your drives for 15+ years without problems (at least no more than any other drives). At last ccount about 130 of the 600 reviews on this drive were 1 star! That is beyond atrocious, espeically given the consequences so many will face if the drive fails.
After some bad experiences with Western Digital changing drive firmware and removing features without warning, I decided to try some Seagate drives. I bought five of these over the last couple years: three went into one enclosure, two into another. The two enclosures were different brands, different SATA controllers, different locations, etc.It turns out that "unmitigated trash" is perhaps too kind a phrase to describe these drives. At two years of runtime in a cool, vibration-free, friendly environment, every single one of the five drives has failed. One failed catastrophically, repeatedly clicking loudly for about 60 seconds and then just disappearing from the SATA bus, never to talk again. Two failed semi-catastrophically: SMART reported rapidly increasing Reallocated Sector Count and eventually the drives became unwriteable. The last two are rapidly on their way to failing, showing Reallocated Sector Count starting to creep up by about one per hour. They're technically already above the level that the Seagate customer support forums say indicates a failing drive, but they're still walking and talking. Clearly I'm not using them for anything but a spectacle now.Do not buy. Ever. In fact, probably wise to just stay away from Seagate for a few years until they get their manufacturing issues straightened out.
when I purchased this hard drive it was going to be a second hard drive for my desktop. but a day after i got it my computers hard drive went out. so i took took my computer and the new hard drive I just purchased to a computer repair place. well when they tried to floor mat this hard drive it would not do so it was defective. i call amazon and told them my computer was down, would they get a hold of this person and tell them that it was defective and would not floor mat. well amazon did a typo error and said it was not floor matted. In which she came back with it was a bare hard drive and needed to be floor matted. amazon then sent a another letter telling her what i said in first place. and she came back as I lied and changed my story. Amazon then replied back as it was there typo error in the first place. so we waited and waited. no answer back finally amazon filed a to z claim and after 1 1/2 months after i got it i finally got my money back from them. and told them if they wanted the hard drive back they needed to sent a return label with paid shipping. they never answered that either. SO WONT BUY FROM THEY BECAUSE IF IT IS DEFECTIVE YOU WELL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK
BACKGROUND: Seagate Barracuda 750GB hard drive on our PC started going bad after a mere year and a half. No data loss, but drive would intermittently "freeze up" the computer so it might, for example, take 2 minutes to launch an application. (I found out later on the internet that other people have had similar problems with the drive and that it might be a design flaw.)PROPOSED SOLUTION: Buy the exact same drive from Amazon Prime, and with $3-$4 overnight shipping, I can have it in 24 hours. With the exact same drive, I knew there would be no compatibility problems - should be pop in and go, right?PACKAGING: I know I'm supposed to provide feedback on this separately, but... lots of others have commented, multiple years ago, on the poor packing job. I assumed by 2011 Amazon would have fixed it, right? Apparently not - item was still shipped in tiny box with minimal padding. This may have contributed to its failure. (Ironically, almost everything else we've ever ordered from Amazon has been overkill on packaging. Maybe they're just inexperienced with sensitive electronics.)SURPRISE: The drive I received was actually marked as a refurbished drive! I bought it "new" from Amazon. I didn't bother reading the fine print, so I can't tell you if "new" means truly new or "new refurbished."VERDICT: Upon booting the PC, the Bios complained that the drive status was "bad". I continued the boot and tried using it anyway. It worked for about 15 minutes, then the drive disappeared from Windows Explorer... Windows failed to recognize it. Rebooted, and same thing: Worked for a short time, then disappeared.RESOLUTION: So much for my "easy" Amazon solution. After reading further poor Seagate reviews, and after being disappointed with TWO Seagates now, I decided to go with Western Digital. On Amazon WD's are generally $20 more, which I'd gladly be willing to pay for a better drive. BUT... Best Buy sells WD's at Seagate prices, and also sells mostly WD's and only a few Seagates, which tells you something. Bought the new Caviar Green 1GB hard drive. I had to drive 40 miles to the store to buy this. BUT... worked PERFECTLY first time. It's now been several weeks, NO problems with the drive whatsoever. I would definitely recommend Western Digital over Seagate.RETURN: We tried to use the Amazon website to return the dead Barracuda, but that part of the website didn't work (ironically, the ONLY part we've ever had a problem with). Tried other browsers, too. So had to Email Amazon customer service. We are pleased to report, though, that they promptly sent us a return authorization, we shipped the drive back, and we did get a full refund without hassle (aside from the initial website problem). So kudos to Amazon for this.
My parents ASUS computer died. They bought a new computer and were throwing out the one that died. I told them I would take the computer and see if I could fix whatever the problem was. Turned out it was just the hard drive. I ordered the original drive for replacement which was this Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB. It arrived at my doorstep 3 days after ordering via standard mail delivery. Although I've never replaced a hard drive before, it literally took 10 minutes to take the housing off the tower, remove 4 screws, undo the data & power cables replace the hard drive and reassemble the unit. Installed the recovery disc and the computer was back to original condition in minutes. I've had no issues since installing this hard drive and the parents now have their own computers instead of sharing. Well worth the $83.00
