If you're considering a K-5, it's an improvement over the previous K-7, K-10, K-20, K100D, etc. And it's cheaper than the newer K-5 II and K-5 IIs. But spending the extra for the II, or (especially) the IIs is worth it. At this point in the product cycle it's not worth limiting yourself with the inferior focusing ability (especially in low light) of the original K-5. The K-5 II fixes that problem, and the K-5 IIs is even better with the removal of the anti-aliasing filter. That built-in filter adds a tiny bit of softness to all images, all the time, in exchange for avoiding unnatural jagged lines in cases where you are photographing fabric or other regularly patterned material that may line up almost-but-not-perfectly with the vertical and horizontal lines of pixels in the camera sensor. For most nature and people photography you just don't need that built-in AA filter so you might as well have sharper images without it.Anyway, there are still good reasons to buy a K-5 now:* If you don't use autofocus anyway* If you need a second camera body for some special purpose or just as your extra side shooter* If you want to black-and-white or infrared modify a very high quality SLR... things like that. Otherwise it's well worth it to get the more recent version.Most of the excellence of this camera can be left out of reviews written this late, because you might as well read the K-5 II and IIs reviews instead. But in short, the K-5 has marvelous balance and hand feel; it manages to be significantly more compact and maneuverable than almost all of the Canons and Nikons that it can match in image quality. Its weight and durability are just right. The quick dials allow you to set aperture, exposure, and ISO without a menu and without taking your hand off the grip.

I am not a professional, I just want to take good pictures and I know a few things about taking good pictures. This camera is perfect for people like me. I was a little skeptical about buying a big camera, as I prefer something small that can be carried in pocket, but I eventually got used to it with the help of the carry bag.
Good Speed, a touch geeky with features which let you control a lot of things and also has user friendly modes in cases where you don't know what needs to be done. A good buy for the price and getting weather proofing is a big perk. I used it mainly outdoors in different weather conditions including rain, no change in how it performs.
I recommend this camera, Before taking it on a trip I suggest to practice using this camera with its modes, settings and shortcuts in your living room with different light conditions to check what different modes do and how controls work. You can see how pictures change with different settings. You will start liking the camera with more and more use.
Best Feature - Motor controlled Focus in lens.
Comparing with Nikon D3200 or D5200. Pentax is a better camera for the price.
Comparing with Cannon - Higher end models of Cannon which cost more than $1500 are better than Pentax K-50.

Oh Boy.
I loved my old K10D. It did everything I wanted from it, and I used all "old" lenses. 28mm. 50mm, Sigma 70-300mm & a Centon 500mm mirror lens..
Then I fell for the K-5 II.
I also bought the 18 to 135mm zoom lens. Also the 10 - 17mm zoom Lens as well.
(It was time I topped my Pentax lens stock up a little bit).
As all you Pentaxians will know, all my old lenses work with the K-5 II as well.
Best of both worlds now.
I am astounded at the K-5 II. Ease of use is 10/10. Quality of the results is also 10/10.
The videos are brilliant too. Again 10 / 10.
Even using my old lenses, at the quality of this sensor, amazed me. Still does a week later.
Would I buy another ?

I am not in the least bothered about the AA filter going missing, so the K-5 II s and the K3 hold no interest to me, and as Pentax have altered things, on the pins at the bottom of the K3, the K-5 II Power drives are no longer compatible.
1 pin is thicker on the K3 connector, so, now Pentax have joined Canon and Nikon, in ripping off its customers, they can stick the K3 where the sun never shines :-) and rip someone else of. Just not me LOL.

I am very pleased with my purchase. Delivery was prompt and item was as advertised. I am also very pleased with the camera in all respects.

I was very optimistic about this camera after reading all the positive reviews from everyone on the internet. After a long research I decided to choose Pentax as the brand to start my DSLR journey. My happiness lasted for only 3 weeks. In the fourth week I started to face issues with the mirror in front of the sensor. It would get stuck when clicking a photo causing even the autofocus to fail because the mirror is in the wrong position. Change to the Live View mode and things work fine but while trying to click through the view finder the mirror gets stuck and sometimes the camera itself hangs with no response at all. I chose to differ from the general crowd and have to repent on my decision. I am currently outside US and by the time I return back I would have crossed 30 day mark, so will be in no position to return the camera. Very disappointing. I wish I would have chosen to stick to the more conventional brands like Canon or Nikon.

The 5 stars I have given to my K5, not the K5iis. The reviews here are for the K5ii not the K5iis, which has an analysing filter removed. I would like to see a performance review of the 's'.

More than I need. I moved up from PZ-70 and my lenses work flawlessly with the K-50. I wish that I could've found a blue body. The camera works great

I took this camera with me on a one to one training course and I must say it was superb. The Photographer doing the one to one has
many, many years experience shooting all over the world and he was very impressed with it.

Very very pleased with this camera. Still learning about its features but have taken some great shots with the automatic and scene modes. Quality of camera and lens first class. Manual is clear and easily followed. Would recommend it as a first dslr for someone who wants to do more than take snaps

Its my first DSLR to learn, previous I was used bridge fz150. Picturer very good.
film mode .....not good. Looking very well. Take few shoots under water with no problems.
But I dont think that is full waterproof for diving.
LCD screen not enough brightness on very sunny day

Bought this as a gift for my husband. He loves it, also he can use his other lenses from previous camera.
Excellent results and easy to use. Good value for money.

I really like this camera. It is easy to use and produces great pictures. I am just now getting to know the settings so pictures should only get better. I did have an issue with the seller... Davis Max.. the Amazon add mentioned the stock Pentax rechargeable battery but I got 4 AA batteries instead. I was pretty upset about that.. but the camera is great.

I am very pleased the my first results with this camera, it's good to get back to an SLR after a few years using a compact. There is a lot to learn about this camera and it has features that I never knew existed, manual has almost 300 pages but worth reading every one to get to know this camera. If all else fails and you don't like reading just switch it to auto and take some great photographs.

Some people are saying it hunts for focus in low light, I can't imagine how low they mean, as it quickly finds focus even in a room lit only by a candle for me. Maybe they don't know how to use contrast detection autofocus.

14-bit color depth? Check. Weather sealing? Check. Cast metal body? Check. Long-life Li-Ion battery? Check. Compact size? Check. Huge lens selection - only if you're willing to use film era lenses - but they all still fit.Pentax has all the "common" focal lengths available, and some are stunning performers, but third party lens makers are focusing more on Nikon and Canon mounts - and OEM lens selections are much broader (and more expensive) with the Big Two. Even Sony (who makes the sensor for this) has better third-party lens support - and an articulated LED screen. But after I dropped my first Pentax dSLR with a 400mm telephoto mounted - and the thing still worked even though I had ripped the lens mount from the body (had to screw it back on) - well, that counts for more useful field live than anything else available.

What an amazing camera for the price. Amazing build and quality, puts the likes of nikon and canon to shame at this price!!

This is an "upgrade" for my 35mm Ricoh KR10, which is now 32 years old and still going strong but not very digital. I thought it about time I got "up to date". Image quality is great and battery life pretty amazing.

The controls are fairly logical and I love the way in P mode that the front and rear 'wheel' controls allow you to adjust aperture and speed. I had to resort to the manual to work out how to switch off the auto-ISO selection. At the moment I feel more comfortable with a bit more control. I have a *LOT* to learn since the days of my old Ricoh but I think me and this camera will get along just fine.

The only thing that lets it down a little is the built in flash. This is probably great as an in-fill flash outdoors but taking indoor pictures leaves a nasty offset shadow around the subject. I'm not knocking a star off for this because generally I think anyone seriously wanting to use flash should be buying a decent external flash.

I have been researching and shopping for a DSLR camera for months. I had narrowed my choices down to Canon or Nikon, or so I thought. Then, I discovered PENTAX on a few blogs and found overwhelmingly positive customer reviews on different sites, which seems to be hard to come by when it comes to DSLRs. Most people seem to really love or really hate certain brands, leaving the ratings and reviews somewhat lopsided. When browsing Amazon recently, this lightening deal sealed the deal and I could not be more pleased. The price for the kit with a second lens was affordable considering the competition and I have to say that the picture quality is excellent! This camera has a lot of features, but you can get started quickly snapping shots using AUTO or SCAN. I have yet to take any video with it, but I will soon. I look forward to taking more pictures with this camera to fully explore everything it has to offer.

It is an excellent camera, take good photos in good light, light conditions escaza photos are not so good, and ISO 52000 is not an option. I think at some point I invest in a better viewpoint. for now I have lens 18-55 mm that comes in this kit. when I do HDR photography nocturnal, which has excellent quality. if you have the money and want a DSLR, look no other, buy this item. CAMERA IS VERY LIGHT, and tried on the beach, THE SUN CARE MUCH WATER AND HEAT, she worked well at all times.

I don't normally write reviews. I feel that most of the reviews from other folk have the same feelings as myself so I don't share. However, with the new K-50, I am pleasently surprised by how easy it is to use. I have been a pentax follower for years but lately I have been thinking that the current Nikon and Canon cameras were more attractive and had more of what I was looking for in a DSLR. I personally didnt want to switch since I had so much money already tide up in lens and equipment for the Pentax camera. That was until I found out that Pentax was releasing the K-50. I knew it was going to be a big change from my K-10 and it had a lot of what I was looking for in a camera.

What surpised me the most was the color. Bright fire engine red. Just having that makes it stand out in a crowd. Not that it makes a difference on performance but it sure caught my eye. After spending about 2 weeks with it, I have grown to like all the enhancements that have added. Including the image sensor and light sensor. Amazing how accurate it is. So much so that I don't really need to use my light meter.

The biggest fault I have is the sound recording. It does record HDMI video with ease but the sound quality isnt the best. There isn't a microphone jack to plug in an exteral micropohone. I realize that they have them on the K-5 models and thought they would have added them to this one as well. As such, for the budding Videographer you will be disappointed.

Overall its a great camera and looking forward to giving it a proper shake down. More as I get it.

A brilliant Camera. Only used it a couple of times so far! But very happy with it! Used it with the Sigma 70 to 300 macro zoom which excellent too! :-)

This is my first "real" camera. I have been very pleased with it so far. While I was a bit surprised and disappointed it only came with AA batteries and the battery adapter as opposed to the rechargeable battery, it was easy and inexpensive to pick up a few rechargeable batteries and the charger separately. I've probably only taken about 500 pictures with the camera so far, but the quality with the stock 18-50 lens has been nice. I'm sure there are many camera features of which I've yet to take full advantage. I just spent another $400 to pick up the 55-300 WR HD lens for this, so I do recommend spending the extra $100 or so when you purchase it and making sure the one you get comes with both the 18-50 and 50-200 lenses - which will likely keep you from having to spend the extra money to buy the 55-300mm lens - at least for a while.

I just received this camera in the mail a couple days ago and have already put it to the test in multiple ways—including low light situations, as I attended a wedding the day after receiving it!! It has done very well and was easy to use, since I just got it and didn't have time to play with it a lot yet—it is very user friendly!!

I was a Canon user for many years and thought that I wanted another Canon, but I started doing some research and reading reviews before my next purchase, and I found that the Pentax line is very affordable—mainly because of its compatibility with older lenses—and that it delivers the high quality images that I would want for a very decent price.

I would definitely recommend this camera!!
