I already own an older Pentax K-x and was curious to discover what has been improved in the K-30. The answer is a lot!

The most obvious changes are a higher-resolution sensor, a weatherproof camera body, a larger, brighter viewfinder, a better LCD screen, quicker focusing, focus-point indicators in the viewfinder, and a second input wheel. There are also numerous other improvements, such user-configurable modes, a horizon meter (which can show forwards-backwards tilt as well as side-to-side), automatic horizon correction, and much more.

One feature I am quite keen on is the "focus peaking" in live view. When composing a shot using the LCD screen (rather than the viewfinder), this feature highlights, in real-time, any edges in the scene that are in focus. This is extremely useful when using manual focus lenses at wide apertures, especially when zooming in on the LCD display, since the standard viewfinder lacks any optical focussing guide.

If I were to be critical, this camera is noticeably heavier than the K-x, but the pentaprism and weatherproofing probably make this unavoidable. Also, I'm a big fan of Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable AA cells, which, unlike lithium-ion batteries, retain their charge for months on end, so are always ready to go. This camera is capable of taking 4 AA's, but this requires a separate holder, which Pentax disappointing did not see fit to include. Unbranded Chinese ones are available for a lot less than the official Pentax model. Also, I was a little surprised that the included lithium-ion battery only occupies a fraction of the battery compartment; a larger battery would have meant less frequent recharges.

The 18-55mm kit lens is fine for general amateur use, although it isn't very fast for low light situations and you can obviously get better optics if you're prepared to spend more. It's worth noting that, unlike the camera body, the lens isn't weatherproof. A windy visit to the beach saw sand entering the same kit lens on my K-x, and it never zoomed as smoothly thereafter.

This camera is pretty easy to use, even for beginners, and yet is capable of producing truly excellent results. The user manual is well written as far as it goes, although it concentrates exclusively on the "how" rather than the "why" of the various options and settings.

While Canon and Nikon may be the more popular choices, I have no regrets about going with Pentax. Its cameras and lenses are excellent and offer extremely good value.

Fantastic piece of kit with the 18-135 lens and currently at bargain prices. Doesn't feel like anything is missing or reserved for higher models. Bought for astro/aurora photography and the weather shielding gives me confidence that it will survive nights out in the cold. Just wish it had a flip out screen.

Bought to replace a Pentax 1st body with a dead sensor.
A much more sophisticated camera - a lot of progress in a few years.
It is quite complicated enough as a lower end model and takes all my lenses. Seems to be rather more intelligent in using older Pentax K and Screw (with bayonet adaptor) lenses (I've been a slave to the Pentax screw mount for nearly 60 years).

The battery arrangements seem rather ad hoc : a proprietary Li ion battery clipping into a 4x round cell (AA?) space and an extra battery cage being needed to use AA batteries . The Maxsimafoto cage from Amazon is perfectly well made - no need to Pentax!

I think this camera could be excellent, however, I received this Christmas as a gift and immediately noticed that it was missing contents, such as the rechargeable battery and charger and ac power cord. Tried taking pictures with AA batteries, and got 7 photos and batteries Died out, rendering the camera useless. I emailed the merchant and have yet to receive any kind of response. Extremely disappointed at this point

K-50 Pentax DSLR has exceptional features and quality rarely found at this price point. Focus peaking and Green button programming for TSV exposure allows use of older M K-mount lenses having manual focus and exposure. Fantastic flexibility for amateur or pro level alike.

Very nice camera bought to replace the K-M. The K-50 has a lot of new features such as time lapse functions and easily adjustable exposure controls. HD video feature with live screen is very good. Still a lot to learn, but so far I am delighted with it.

I was/am a Canon shooter but bought this because I have always loved Pentax from the days of film. Even with the kit 18-135 lens the results are fantastic and the dng files have more latitude than any I get from my Canons - both full frame and APS-C. The camera is a joy to use - just so intuitive and it just feels 'right'. In summary, whenever I go out now I just reach for the Pentax - my Canons stay in their bags.

I bought this camera as a upgrade to my Pentax K200D which is still a great camera.
I like the feel of my new K50.. not as quite as big or as heavy as my K200D.. but feels good holding it..
I like the full view of the view finder and easy to understand menu. having live view is a nice feature but a feature I really will not use I prefer setting up my shots through the view finder.. (personally that's all part of using a DSLR) The live view is nice if you are utilizing the movie mode..
The K50 works with all my lenses from my K200D as well as my all my old manual K mount lenses from my old Pentax SLR film camera a very nice "Pentax" feature!!
I also like that I can put AA batteries with the separately purchased D-BH109 battery holder. You can find AA batteries anywhere if you are in a pinch and have a dead battery..
All in all I am very happy with my K50, I have taken about 300 shots and very please with the quality of the photos I am getting...

Anyone looking to buy a DSLR and don't give the Pentax a look are cheating themselves. These cameras are excellent for the beginner and advanced amateur. I've used Pentax cameras beginning with a Pentax Spotmatic and several Pentax film SLRs. The Pentax K-50 is my third Pentax DSLR. I just upgraded from a KR. Each time I've upgraded they keep getting better and better. This is one of the only cameras in its class with weather proofing. The menu is easy to use and intuitive, it has two dials for changing aperture and shutter and many other pro features you would want on this type of camera. I want go over all the specs here. Don't be stuck on Canon and Nikon, both are excellent brands. Take a look at Pentax. You will be in for a pleasant surprise.

The Pentax K-500 is a great mid-level camera, particularly if you are invested in the Pentax universe. I have multiple Pentax lenses from my conventional SLR that I've had for 10+ years. I looked into purchasing a Pentax because I wanted to leverage my older Pentax lenses as I delved further into the digital SLR world.

The 16MP sensor may not be as high as some of the other cameras on the market, but I've found that 16MP is more than enough for most photgraphers unless you plan on printing images above 22''. Otherwise, you will be nmore than satisfied.

The manual, automatic, and semi-automatic (Av-Priority, etc.) are highly responsive. Changing the manual settings is seamless once you spend a few miniutes with the camera. I was pleased with how responsive and accurate the sensor is.

All in all, I think that this is a good buy for any mid-level photography who doesn't want to go the Nikon/Canon route for any number of reasons. Admittedly, I have a somewhat irrational attachment to Pentax because it is the brand that I first learned how to shoot film on, but I objectively think that this is a great camera. I would recommend it.

I've been a Pentax user for years. The K-50 does not disappoint. The added bonus of being able to take it out in conditions that require leaving other cameras inside is great. The 18-135 lens is a perfect match for the K-50 body.

I’m a newbie to DSLR cameras and considered purchasing a Nikon D-3200 or 3300, but decided on this Pentax K500 once I saw the price – about $80+ cheaper at the time – almost a week ago. Unfortunately, I do not have another comparison, but for my needs (design portfolio), this camera rocks!! It shoots RAW (DNG) and high quality JPG photos and takes video. It shoots very well in low light, even without tinkering around with the settings.

My camera came with four double A batteries, battery holder, neck strap and kit lens, but did not come with the AC power supply (not sure I’ll need this anyway). The lithium batteries (an optional purchase), are only sold to consumers in other parts of the world – there’s a notation in the product manual.

The printed manual is very thick and provides functional step-by-step instructions. I did, however, have to view a YouTube video to figure out how to put the neck strap on! Oh, and make sure you put the lens on correctly, otherwise nothing will be visible in the viewfinder and the large screen will be quite dim – it will still take photos though!

Looks like a good product upon arrival. I got it for a gift for someone in my family but the only complaint I had was that it arrived in separate pieces and not as one neat package so I had to organize it myself to look like a nice packaged gift. Would be nice if they had it all in one box. He won't get it til christmas so i'm not sure how well it works yet.

All the good stuff everyone says in other reviews seems right based on my experience with this camera over a few months. However, apparently some of these pentax k cameras have a bad capacitor for the built in flash. When you try to use the flash the camera gives a message "battery depleted" then the camera turns off. My k50 does just that but I didnt know til today because i didnt try the flash til now. I dont want to send the camera back and have it disassembled. That might compromize the factory weather seal. I'll get an external flash, which is better anyway. Sometimes the built in flash is convenient though so i am disappointed. Try the flash right out the box!

I haven't used an SLR camera since giving up film photography some years ago, but have wanted one for the versatility they afford. Even though they are high quality and well regarded cameras, some reviews I have read about the low end Canon and Nikon models left me concerned. Admittedly, I haven't found the abundance of reviews about the Pentax, but what I have seen contained no negatives so I bought a K-500. The model I purchased has exceeded my expectations regarding quality of construction and versatility, and the images it produces are quite nice with beautiful color rendition. As a bonus, a Quantaray 70-210mm telephoto from my old Pentax works on the new one, albeit in manual mode. I have not owned the camera long enough to even begin to experiment with all of the controls, and there are many, but I plan to use the Pentax to the max. The operating manual provided will give me many days of instruction to maximize the camera's functions. A great camera for an extremely reasonable price.

I'll start by saying that I like Pentax as a brand and have several of their older MF lenses that my dad gave me. The K-50 was a camera that I had been looking forward to for a while, as the weatherproofing and value for the money intrigued me. When the camera arrived, however, I found myself less than thrilled to play with it.
Perhaps it was the kit lens or just my copy of the camera in particular (I got it from warehouse deals, so I'm guessing someone else had bought and returned it) but it seemed to hunt for autofocus in casual indoor shooting, something my Nex 6 and D90 don't really do as often. That aside, the camera itself seems well built and sturdy, but it just doesn't feel substantial, take that how you will. I can certainly appreciate the lack of heft when thinking about lugging it around my neck all day, but I also like to feel that my camera has some mass to it. It feels very nikon D40-esque. This is admittedly a personal preference, and I think my four star review demonstrates that my bias does not reflect poorly on the camera. It simply isn't the camera for me. Image quality was good and the lcd display was bright and easy to read. Controls are well-placed and menus are simple and intuitive (unlike those of the Nex which are terrible). Overall, a very good camera with a lot of features for a good price. Unless you are like me and have some arbitrary and ultimately pointless predefined notion of what a camera should feel like this would be a very good choice for almost anyone.

This camera replaced our Pentax K-x, and I can tell we'll like it even better than our beloved K-x. We had considered moving to the Canon T-5 until we did the direct comparison reviews, and wasn't even a fair comparison. We decided keeping our lenses and upgrading to the K-50 was by far the best route (and value), and we're really glad we made that call.

I have to return first camera - there was a tiny screw missing on the bottom plate. The replacement works fine.

So far works pretty great. Took a while to get used to the strange combination of GUI and manual dials, but it works fairly well. Love the low light shooting on this camera!

Great Camera, great photo quality, I'm very satisfied with this product, and delivery was also good, on time, and well protected in a big box.

I wish I could give this camera 6 stars. I am truly loving it. It is easy to use and it gives great, quality images. I love that it comes with two lenses, also. It is also easy to get the images off the camera and onto my computer, which was not true with my Canon. So far I've found no drawbacks.

One thing to note - the option to use AA batteries is nice - but you need to order an adapter piece to hold them and that does not come with the camera. That was not obvious when I ordered it. I'm going to order one though so I can use AAs if it comes up.

But the quality of images are wonderful and I find the interface easy to use - the main things I look for.
