Picture processing is superb as well. While I don't use it to process the PQ of my Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player, I do use it to up-scale the signal from digital cable box/DVR from 1080i to 1080p and also apply some mild noise reduction, and my overly compressed cable has never looked better. There is a caveat, however. There seems to be an HDMI handshaking issue with the 818 and my Motorola digital cable box causing it to be forced down to 720p every time I start up. This means whenever I turn my cable on I have to manually dig down into the menu system and switch the output resolution back to 1080i.
Now, the biggest disappointment is the networking features. I was really hoping to be able to use the 818 to stream all my ALAC and FLAC audio files from my networked hard drive and finally box up all of my CDs, regaining all that physical space (I have A LOT of CDs -- over 6,000). Alas, the Onkyo doesn't support gapless playback -- not via DLNA, not via your "home network" not even from a USB drive. WHAT?! Try listening to classical music, a concert disc, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto, or Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Mood without gapless playback -- it's torture. Denon has already updated their AVRs to support gapless playback streaming, what's wrong with Onkyo? Even with the glaring issue of missing gapless playback aside, the Onkyo 818 had problems playing back streaming media, be it from my networked hard drive or via the internet (Pandora, etc.) -- and this was over a WIRED Ethernet connection, not wi-fi (more on that later). Streaming media playback had a lot of dropouts, and, while I could live with the occasional dropout from something like Pandora -- it is the Internet after all -- frequent drop outs playing music from my own hard drive over Ethernet is unacceptable. Getting back to wi-fi -- if you plan on using this over your network via wi-fi (with Onkyo's UWF-1 adapter or some other compatible adapter) don't. The Onkyo doesn't allow "home media" streaminng (read a networked hard drive/DLNA server) via wi-f. It also limits the sampling rate of streaming Dolby TrueHD lossless media over wi-fi to the unusual 68kHz.
In the end, as an AVR, the TX-NR818 absolutely rocks with great sound and picture processing, all the traditional AVR features, but it falls down with one of the main draws of the latest crop of AVRs, and that's the networking. They need to update the firmware to fix these flaws fast.

THE RECEIVER IS THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK. IT IS THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE OF THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT. IT DOES EVERYTHING AND UNLIKE THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE DOES IT AS WELL AS A SPECIALIZED PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. YOU CAN SPEND MORE MONEY ON SEPARATE COMPONENTS, BUT, THIS THING IS PRETTY AWESOME. THERE IS PLENTY OF POWER, IT SOUNDS GOOD AND ONCE YOU MASTER THE INTERFACE YOUR ARE GOING TO ENJOY IT. THIS ONE IS THE HEART OF THE HOMES ENTERTAINMENT CENTER AND IS A KILLER APP.
THERE IS AN iPAD APP THAT IS FREE AND THAT FURTHER ENHANCES THE EASE OF USE.
THERE IS ONE CAVIAT, THE HDMI OUTPUT BOARDS ON THESE THINGS ARE STILL LESS THAN WHAT THEY COULD BE. SO IF YOU BUY ONE DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOU HAVE IT IN THE SHOP DURING IT'S LIFE TIME. THE REPAIR ISN'T ALL THAT EXPENSIVE (UNDER $200) AND IT IS STILL THE BEST THING AVAILABLE.

But let me take you to the setup real quick, the speaker nobs are real simple to use in the back. after plugging everything in, HDMI's, and speaker wires ect... it will take you all about 30 minutes top. (unless of course you are completely unorganized) Now that it is all connected all you do is plug in you MIC and your Audyssey is ready to start. this is very simple process. Note: be sure to make fine tuning adjustments after Audyssey runs. If you are unsure and/or just are guessing it might be worth it to leave it alone and go with what Audyssey says. Or read the thread or forums about refining your system. Now your done. You will clearly hear each noise in each speaker more vivid from an other A/V you may have purchased like in the past. It realy will amaze you.
Like an onion this receiver has many layers for you too pull back. Unlike an onion pulling back each layer is going to cost your wallet. I could almost feel this beast was being help back by my Bose A6 speakers, I felt i was missing out on something. So i had a bit of extra cash and decided to upgrade my speakers as well. i purchase about $3k on speakers from Klipsch and Definitive speakers and not running a 5.2 system. Yes this is what i felt i was missing. I smile every time i play my music and cant wait to play a movie now.

After just a few weeks though I have joined the problem crowd- the receiver no longer will power on by remote. All other remote options work but power on will not. Google ONKYO REMOTE POWER ON and read about all of the others that have this issue, across all new Onkyo receivers.
One suggestion was to power the receiver on first (before the DVR or TV) and this seemed to fix the problem for a few hours. What I later found out was that if the receiver is turned off and back on within a short time period the problem may not remanifest itself until it has remained off for a while. The other possible correction is to leave the Network Standby set to Yes/On, but that consumes a bit of power and should not be required for the remote to work. I have not confirmed this as a fix but will try it out.
I was planning on buying a second Onkyo receiver for another room but may try something else if they cannot resolve this issue. At some point companies will figure out manufacturing with no QA is not the answer for consumer satisfaction and continued brand loyalty.
[UPDATE] Well, the network standby does work as an alternative means to correct the issue, but after installing the latest firmware update the problem seems to be corrected without having to go this route. The update instructions are somewhat confusing as the firmware release at the top of the page does not match the one it says the receiver will show at the bottom of the page- the firmware number at the top IS the one the receiver will show post-update: 1100-7101-0100-0000. "Once these updates are completed, the receivers F/W version will be 1080-6100-0100-0000" is NOT correct and probably an oversight that should have been edited/removed.
I have upped my rating to 4 stars, would have been 5 if I had received an email response from Onkyo about my problem. That said the video and audio this receiver produces is outstanding, so good that I DID decide to buy another Onkyo receiver for my other room. Time will tell if I have made a good choice, but for now I am VERY satisfied.
[UPDATE 5/18/2013] What Onkyo should really do is sell these by the 6-pack, that way you could toss them out when they stop working and have something else to plug in. What a POS this receiver has turned out to be. I think I will send it back to be repaired under warranty and sell it, along with the other I bought. I wonder if Onkyo does any QA at all before releasing products to the market. ONKYO, why do you sell this JUNK and expect to maintain any degree of customer loyalty and return business?

The next morning, the pass-thru was not working again and I am experiencing the same issue as noted before the repair. I sent a request to Amazon for replacement/refund this morning. After 15+ years as a loyal Onkyo fan (had the bullet proof TX-DS787 and regret selling it) I will never buy another one of their products.

First of all I've read a lot of reviews talking about the frames per minute/second or whatever it is, and I can tell you that mine seems to have no problems with regards to that. I've watched movies on my computer and I play my ps3 through the receiver and nothing appears to be affected, so not sure if it's just some bad receivers or what but mine does not seem to have that problem.
Another minor annoyance is again with my computer, which is hooked to the receive and through my tv, the screen size sometimes changes and get's all zoomed in (closer), but the whole screen still shows everything (not being cut off). I just turn the receiver off and on and that usually fixes that and goes back to normal, but like I said a minor annoyance.
I used the usb/ipod connector with my ipod and that seems to work great, no complaints there.
Other than that everything seems to work great so far, definitely is bigger and heavier then I realized, it is my first receiver so I had no idea what to expect.
Not sure if it's worth it's retail price though, I luckily got a deal because it was out of stock (around 600) and luckily still got it in a decent time frame compared to it's projected time frame, plus I got a big gift card for christmas which almost cut that price in half, so I definitely got a great deal out of this. I'm sure you could find receivers just as good as this in a better price range if that is something your worried about, I learned while researching receivers though is that it's really hard to figure out what is a good or bad one, and based on a lot of reviews that there seems to be a lot of glitches and what not in these newer receivers which made me super nervous when buying one because they are so darn expensive.
Not sure how bad setting up usually is with receivers but setup on this receiver seemed simple enough to me.
In the end my receiver seems to work pretty well and I recommend it to anyone who is willing to pay for it, and I feel your pain when it comes to researching and looking for receivers, good luck!

The NO SOUND problem has been plaguing Onkyo receivers for over 3 years now. I currently have the HT-RC270 and the HT-RC180. They both will not produce sound and both have greyed-out network settings. Both receivers can be reset occasionally by resetting the RIHD settings, plugging & unplugging a mic or repeatedly pressing the VCR/DVD & Power button reset. It is random though whether sound comes back. After either receiver is powered off, they resort back to a NO SOUND state.
I have exhaustively researched this issue. It seems nearly all Onkyo receiver models have HDMI main/controller boards that malfunction. Its not if, it seems to be when...most seem to die just outside the 2 year warranty time frame.
I would like Onyko to address this issue and explain why soon-to-be defective products are still being released to the market. Three years of the same problem reoccurring does not make sense. I truly like Onyko receivers, their options and menus. I am amazed to see Onkyo let their reputation slip into a defective product state.
Any answers?
Any solutions out there?

What should I do with my 2 big silent black boxes now?

I do not speak English, I will translate this with google.
not if you know the problems with Venezuela, with the acquisition of foreign currency, I later three years, bringing to purchase this equipment, which is a little known brand in Venezuela, I was safe, that the features are impressive, and after many problems for the location in my house to install it, I install it and to my surprise, it did not catch on, now I do with this equipment not serving! when I was in Venezuela, who answers me so ...
I give you the lowest rate, because it has no negative number, can not imagine the outrage that I felt, when very emosionado, enceder went to my computer, and do absolutely nothing ... and not knowing what to do with, because there is not a house in Venezuela, for review or Algan something.

My biggest tip: we could NOT for the life of us get Onkyo's (weaker) UWF-1 wireless adapter to work with this. However, do yourself a favour and get the much cheaper and powerful TP-Link TL-WN722N (also available on amazon). Worked like a charm in our TX-NR5009 and I suspect it will work fine on the TX-NR5010 too. It saved us from having to use a switch in our living room, and now I can dedicate our sole ethernet wall port to go directly into our Mediacenter PC.

The 10/18/2013 update will address the following: UPDATE AVAILABLE ONLY via USB (US ONLY)
1. Corrects lock up failure when using MiCasaVerde Vera Lite controller on the same network
Thank you very much for fixing this firmware problem!
####
UPDATE: I had the receiver working, with the network features all working, after updating the firmware to the newest version from USB. A couple of weeks later, the network and USB features were missing again. I have no idea if this is a hardware or a software fault, but it is irritating as hell. It would be really nice if the Onkyo firmware would let us COMPLETELY reload the current firmware version, so we could ensure that all parts of the firmware were correctly installed...
Installed it a week ago, and was very happy with the Onkyo TX-NR818 until this morning. Was enjoying playing FLAC files using the Home networking app, was streaming internet radio via Pandora and Spotify, was happy with 12 local FM channels coming in clearly, and it looked and sounded great.
However, when I powered it up this morning, and attempted to select the FM tuner, it kept switching back to Network by itself. And, it did not pass any sound to the speakers. It actually would hang saying 'Wait' when I attempted the Audyssey setup, and it made no sound.
I used the CBL/Sat+Power/Standby reset to reset it to factory configuration. And it then passed the Audyssey setup and the speakers worked.
However, it no longer sees the built in ethernet network interface. It is greyed out in the setup configuration. I updated the firmware twice when I installed it last week, so it has the latest firmware. It was working great when I shut it off last night.
Sadly, my last chance to return it was two weeks ago, and now it is failing. Will have to hope that Onkyo supports it. I went to the Onkyo support forums, and other people are having failures of this stereo, too.
I will attempt to update this review as I deal with the process
I was hoping that those problems were behind Onkyo by now, since this receiver has been shipping for a while, but sadly, the problems still exist

yes i will recommend this to my friends

I contacted support for the issue and it took 2 days to get a call back because they are experiencing very high call volumes. When they finally called me back, the guy said I would have to take it to a service center. Well I am in Virginia and the closest center is in New Jersey. He told me I would have to contact the regional service center (which may I add he would not give me the contact info for but told me to go to the onkyo site and look it up!!!) and they will arrange repair with me. However would I have to pay the shipping cost to send in a 40lb $1100 (price at the time) device that barely has any usage and is still under warranty...
