Specifically, and as referenced in Onkyo's Forums, the 818 has a defective USB port. SO, you will not be able to listen to your IPOD songs without hearing "dead spots" on each and every song. When I asked to return the unit and get my money back, they said "NO, you have to accept another unit". This was AFTER having sent me a defective unit prior to the 818. And, not to be ignored, ONKYO's streaming APP is, to be kind, UNSTABLE and will not work past one or two songs.
Outrageous!
You are nuts to purchase anything from ONKYO.
As for the 700 series models: 708/709/717/726. They all have defective mother boards. Some may last past the warranty period and will cost at least $800 to repair. If they crash prior to the warranty period deadline, you will have to send them to be repaired at YOUR EXPENSE.
I was an idiot to do business with ONKYO. Do not make the same mistake. Beware!

5 star

The physical remote that comes with the device will learn any other remote. You can put the remote in learning mode and tell it what button you want to program, then point another remote at it. The Onkyo remote will learn the command sent by the other remote, making it capable of controlling pretty much every other device in your house. This is great because I've got a projector and some lighting that are RF controlled, but can't be programmed via traditional programming codes. This is a fantastic feature!
The app is also great. Being able to independently control the three zones, volume, subwoofer level, etc, via your cell phone is probably the best part of the whole experience.
Set up is incredibly easy and the mic calibration makes a huge difference. You can really tell when you're in the sweet spot.
There are a few things not quite right for which I've subtracted a star (but I still recommend the receiver).
The Net functions will sometimes freeze up and require a restart to bring back in line. Sometimes the app can not find the receiver, but it will find other devices. It's nifty that I might be able to control an xbox through the app, but that's not what I'm trying to do. I would also include an illuminated remote. It's hard to do find what device you're on without accidentally changing the input on the receiver.
In all, it's a wonderful receiver. People are always doing double takes like, "Did you just do that from your phone?" It puts out a great field of crisp sound, even at low levels. The remote options make this one of the best receivers you can buy!

The old model, AVR 3808CI, 130 Watt, 39lb, only had 4 HDMI so I started looking to update to a new receiver.
The first thing I turned to was another Denon AVR-2312CI with 7 HDMI inputs, 105 watts per channel, Air Play etc for $924 inc tax at local Best Buy.
First thing I noticed was how light it was compared to my older Denon. Heavy does not mean better but in amplifiers, the important component is the power transformer and a robust transformer will be heavy.
Upon hooking up the 2312, my first listening test was disappointing. Not much better than my former Denon and perhaps not as good. So I returned the 2312 to Best Buy and start my search again.
After extensive search, the Onkyo line interested me the most.
Initially, I was attracted to TX-NR717 125 watts and 7.2. Then I chanced on to TX-NR818.
It is 135 watts, 9.2, 40lb and more electronic features stuffed into it than you can imagine! I was a little concerned because the more stuff they put in, more chance of conflicts, bugs and nagging problems.
The NR818 is the latest model and some websites list it but not available yet.
I found one at Amazon and I decided to order one for $1099 and with LAN adapter and 12 sets of banana plug it came to $1151.
Now here is the bottom line. After setting up the Receiver with Sony DVD/CD player, Time Warner DVR, XBox 360, PS3 and Apple TV, I put in my favorite CD and turned it on.
When I heard the sound, my initial reaction was WOW! I looked at my wife and she agreed the sound was fantastic! The best way that I can explain the sound is it's clear, clean, pristine. And without going through the speaker set up routine, my Aperion speaker system with center channel and a sub-woofer put out a sound I never heard before and all channels well balanced!
One surprising extra to the NR818 is the video. When I view Time Warner programs, I have to say "man look at that color!" The rendering of all the colors are 100% improvement! Focus is sharper, all the color seem more true to life. Red are redder, blue are bluer and the flowers and trees pop out at you.
As you can see, I am very impressed with Onkyo NR818. There are tons of features and adjustments that I have not tested and tried but my initial impressions are that they will all work well.
If my comments need updating, I will here.
In the meantime, I'd certainly recommend Onkyo NR818 as one of your consideration.

After now owning this receiver for about 7 months, I must say that it's been a pleasant surprise. Stepping down from a $2200 MSRP receiver, the SC-37, I thought I was going hear a drop in audio quality. I was wrong but there are indeed differences between the two units. On the Onkyo TX-NR818 paired with my Klipsch XF series speaker set and Supercube Reference Subwoofer, the sound output sound that can be described as warm but it's a welcomed change. On the Pioneer it was bright causing my Klipsch horns to be too loud during certain scenes in movies (shattering glass for example).
The iPad app was easy to use and immediately recognized my receiver on the network. Once connected I could change input, sound levels, and do other things from anywhere in my home. Video processing is great and it actually makes my Elite TV (PRO-60X5FD) look even better which I didn't think was at all possible. This receiver also allows for ISF certified calibration which I do not use. Moving on, Instapreview technology is just marketing for Onkyo. It doesn't run smoothly and I have found it to not be useful. Certain previews just show up as a black screen and other times is extremely choppy.
Having owned the top Onkyo receiver in the past (TX-NR5007, sold it because no 3D pass through) in the past, I must say that this receiver's quality is very near that unit. In my opinion, I would recommend saving the extra money and get this unit instead!

My only cons are that the receiver cannot stream videos over DLNA from my PC, only music. I have an older bluray player that was much less expensive that can stream videos and is several years old. Also the user interface could be a little more intuitive and better looking. Lastly, the receiver does not support gapless playback of music streamed from your PC, meaning there is a 5 second delay in between tracks which can be very annoying if your listening to just about any album all the way through (think Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon, live concerts, classical music, etc.). This is not a problem if you hook your mp3 player directly to the receiver.
All in all a great receiver that I would recommend.

Still planning on installing a powered Sub woofer....

The only issues are:
- Slow to boot - it is the last device in my entertainment center to go from cold to fully functional
- No accessory power plugs in the back. My understanding is that this is an Onkyo thing. Oh well.
- About once a day or so, the picture will just go completely black for a few seconds, whether on CATV, Blu-Ray, or WII. I had this same issue with my previous receiver, a Denon. Extensive troubleshoot at that time pointed to the Denon.

I highly recommend this receiver. I have this paired with Klipsch RF-82II fronts and a Klipsch 301 sub.

All of the other features like built in Pandora and other internet music providers to full control of the unit through iPad apps, which even show the type of surround mode being encoded in the input, are even more reason to buy!
As an audioholic, this unit keeps the fine music addiction alive and well.
PS - Bi-amping the front speakers makes a big difference in sound clarity if your speakers will allow.

I want to keep this review simple and to the point as there are plenty of reviews here.
The system comes complete with the following features over the Onkyo NR616:
- HQV
