Great sound with movies and music. There is just one thing I have found wrong. When I set the Video to Custom, the picture is not solid. There is a flicker when there is a fast motion. It's kind of hard to explain. You'll need to see it to understand what I mean by "not solid". I upgraded from the TX-NR905 and this box pumps out a heck of a lot more sound. It's not just louder, it's loud and clear. I have a 7.2 setup and adding a second subwoofer really made a tremendous difference with the bass. If you can afford it, you won't go wrong if you appreciate great audio.

purchased a used one from Amazon and it wouldn't even power on. I am sending back now and will see if the second one will be any better.

this is by far the best home theater receiver you could have for the price, i set it up with, Bic America Dv64 6.5 Tower Speaker for the front channel, BIC America DV62si Bookshelf Speakers for surround and front wide,BIC America DV-62CLRS 6-Inch 2-Way Center Channel Speaker for center channel,BIC AMERICA DV-32B 3 1/2" 2-Way Compact Shielded Speakers for my high channel, boston acoustic pv1000 for my subwoofer, it rocks the hole building, (3 flat apartment building)great soun for all aplications,music,games,the movies sounds just like in the theaters, im so happy with this receiver my current set up is 9,1 channels,,,,you have to get one, yeah buddy

Just bought a apartment and moved in, so I did a lot of reseach and decide to go for onkyo's 818 because THIS IS the beginning of the High End A/V unit. If you are not audiophile, this unit perhap good for you the next 10+ years.
Pos.
1. Excellent sound, my apartment has a 11 feet ceiling in living room, after the XTS auto correction function. It immediately turned my living room into a movie theather.
2. The video from my PC to TV turn up at least 2 knot. Color and everything is so nice. Don't listen to the previous 3 posts, I didn't notice anything thing wrong on the video.
Cons.
1. It is mainly my fault, I didn't measure the TV stand before I bought it, so it won't fit perfectly in my TV stand, but it is managable.

this thing is a beast 40 pounds of pure muscle. lots to digest as far as capabilities coming from its older brother the 805...lots more goodies on this model...onkyo has been my favorite choice for a/v recivers for 10 years now and this one continues my brand loyalty......

Works great and the administration is very easy. The only complain that I'll have is related with the peripherials to manage, for example, I have a WD TV Live, and I can't manage it form the Onkyo remote.

No receiver in this price range can compare to sound quality or feature set! Onkyo out performs receivers twice the price! Look at cnet or other pro reviews and you will find them compare Onkyo to $1600 Denons and Yamaha receivers! This is my third Onkyo. I have owned the Onkyo 608, 806 and know the 818. The 818 has surpassed my expectations of what a receiver can do.. Sound quality is exceptional! Far surpassing any other receiver I have heard. I have never had an issue with any of my Onkyo receiver! I think people should first return product to Amazon before complaining about it! Amazon has a very good return policy! No manufacturer can guarantee perfection!

This receiver is a powerhouse (and surely given it size it should be) but the lack of Airplay and poor ability to play FLAC via DNLA make it not the modern master it should be. Gapless playback and a better search and/or navigation feature is necessary in this day of digital audio files. A firmware update to resolve this would make this product a 5 star in my book.

This tuner brought my 10-year-old B&W DM 602 S3 speakers back to life. My 4 year old Integra tuner over the last year began dying until I had to find a replacement. After much research I settled on this tuner because of the Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and it worked as advertised. I bi-amped my front speakers, I only have a 5.1 setup, and I cannot believe the difference this tuner has made to my system. The Video switching is flawless and the USB and Ethernet ports work as advertised. I use an old 4 gig thumb drive in the rear USB port for my Christmas music this year with perfect playback. If you have the money this tuner will bring new life to your system as it did mine.

Was really reluctant to purchase another "Onkyo" ( had an Onkyo HT-S9100THX HTIB ...HDMI switching problems, and eventually wouldn't even turn on), but since I still had the speakers, decided to take a chance on this one. Now so far (fingers crossed) this 818 seems to be ok! It actually is a lot better technologically than my old 9100. Only time will tell if it holds up, but as of this writing it has been excellent! I'm enjoying it!

The receiver is great in every way but one. And that one is on zone 2 or 3 you cannot play digital format on them. Sure you can use hdmi for video but it will not pass audio nor will will it pass digital audio via spdif or spdif/optical. Fix that and you would get 5 stars.

did the latest firmware, even the factory reset - like was suggested at the onkyo usa forums and nothing - i tried the tech support and like others said here - Onkyo tech support is a joke, absolutely NO help. I am really upset - what bad experience ...

SOUND IS KINDA NEEDED FOR A RECIEVER . ONKYO HAD NONE. AFTER AN HOUR ON THE PHONE WITH A TECH REP., HE INFORMED ME IT WAS INTERNAL, RETURNED WILL NOT BY ANYTHING FROM ONKYO AGAIN.

Replaced an outdated Yamaha. Chose this model since it was almost half price. What a deal! I have read reviews about the video processing, but I have to tell you that the picture on my 50" Panasonic Plasma is better than it has ever looked! I have had the monitor (not a TV) for 9 years and it may be that I have not experienced some of the problems that other reviewers have reported since it is a 720p monitor. Sound is fabulous. I highly recommend!!

-Sounds great
-Easy set-up
-iPhone app
-Slacker, Pandora & Last.fm
-Zones. You can listen to your iPod on the patio and listen/watch TV inside and listen to a 3rd in the bedroom.
Cons:
-Has USB in front & back - only the front can be used with your iPhone/iPod. No big deal except you have to leave the huge front cover open when you hook up your phone.
-When you are listening to your music (usually loudly) if you adjust the treble or bass the volume completely shuts off with each click up or down with the settings then comes back on. This is annoying if your music is turned up.
-They advertise the system is a 7.2 - not really. If you have Zone 2 enabled (my patio) the system shuts off 2 speakers (& a subwoofer) indoors and becomes a 5.1. Then, if you enable Zone 3 (my bedroom), 2 more speakers get shut off and becomes a 3.1. It is 7.2 if Zones 2 & 3 are off.
-Zone 2 & 3 are not run through the sound/equalizer processors.
-Zone 2/3 will not play from HDMI - have to use RCA jacks.
Another concern: Amazon didn't require a signature with this UPS delivery.... This $1100 item sat on my front porch waiting to be stolen for 7 hours until I got home from work (it didn't, luckily).

Good product, once calibrated the speakers the sound is spectacular both in music and movies.
Sound programs are specific, easy to program, front USB port is handy for the iPad turn listening to music with great audio quality, convenient remote control computers control everything with it. I'm using two subwoofers is impressive surround sound.

Impresive Receiver, nice sound and video. Autocalibration works fine and the ISF too. It's not very compatible with my Optoma 3d Adapter, but I solved sending only the audio to the receiver when I choose to watch 3D. In the future I'll change the projector for a 1080P True-Output.

From page 13 of the 818 owners manual we read:
Speaker Configuration
"Front high, surround back and front wide speakers cannot be used at the same time."
This statement is only partially true. To get 9 channels you can use the pre-out EXT feeding a separate stereo amplifier. One needs to choose two of the three possibilities: Front Height, Front Width or Surround Back.
Next years receiver will no doubt include 9 amplifiers - and then have pre-outs to make 11 channels. Very funny. Thanks for the assistance guys!

Easy to set up, Just follow the instructions and everything works. The only sad part with the internet radio preset programs is, If one of them stops operating, you can't remove it (MP3Tunes) and install a new one like Sky.fm. And no RDS function on the Tuner like any out of North American version whos got it. Other then that, including the automatic firmware update (with permanent Ethernet connection) works perfect.

This receiver is the best bang for the buck in its price range . As a prior owner of denon, Onkyo, and Sony flagship receivers this unit is a culmination of them all. I am not interested in internet playback so that is not important to me ,only complaint I have is you do not have a discreet power trigger for main zone for ext amps . Yes it does does 9.2 with an ext amp for its street price you cannot get a better receiver . I took off one star for the trigger issue which has been ignored by Onkyo for years.

This is a GREAT Receiver if you are thinking of buying one spend the extra money and get it you will not be disappointed great performance easy to set up and use. Technical service was awesome when I did have a question.
