Given difficulties others faced with HDMI connections, I was very worried when I had similar problems after installing. For about a week or two, my HDMI connections either did not work at all or worked only intermittently, dropping the connection for no apparent reason and forcing me to reboot the receiver each time. All of the non-HDMI connections worked fine. I was about ready to box it up and ship it back. However, after about 10 days or so everything seemed to work perfectly. It has now been 10 months since I got the receiver and connected it. Other than that first week or so, it has worked perfectly. I do not know why, but it seemed that the HDMI connections just took some time to get broken in. Absolutely outstanding sound and pass-through HD video. Would give it five stars if it had worked out of the box like it works now.

I have been testing this amp for over a month now. I also have a Denon 4520ci in main media room. Onkyo 818 is punching above its weight class. SQ and VQ is equal to my Denon 4520ci (I only have one sub) which cost $2500. I wish I could have bought this Onkyo 818 before, instead of Denon 4520ci. Denon 4520 is awesome amp and so is Onkyo 818.
So far I have no 24frame issue at all. All is working good and as designed. The sound that come out of this amp and my B&W CM9 HT (5.1 setup) is clear, concise and powerful (Audessy XT32 is doing its magic and its an improvement over XT). I can't comment on long term reliability but all I can say is that Onkyo 818 is Fantastic value for the price. I don't think there is any better amp than this in the price range or even up to $2000. I played music/movies at almost reference level for several hours and it never stopped pleasing. I hope this amp don't have issues further down the road. But for now I will give it 5 stars. I would recommend this amp to anyone who is looking to do a 5.1 or 7.1 system.

Sounds like a dream, excellent video quality end supper easy to operate. Sound calibration really makes a difference. Well worth th money.

I recently purchased this item from Amazon to replace a Denon 2113. I have used Onkyo receivers in the past and have been extremely happy with them. This unit is no exception. My theater is about 20x18 and I am using 1 sub. The build quality of the Onkyo 818 is exceptional. The unit is heavy which is always a plus for an amp, (about 20 pounds heavier than the Denon 2113 which it replaced) and the OSD is good although it does not appear as sharp as I think it should on my 115" screen. Setup was relatively straightforward and there are plenty of HDMI inputs which is always a plus. All in all, I believe the sound quality is much better than my previous Onkyo 805 and the Denon 2113.
There are some minor issues that I have (none are dealbreakers):
1. Volume knob tension is not consistent
2. If I turn off my Onkyo 818 it will not recognize my Directv H25 receiver until I turn the Directv H25 off then on again
3. When using Directv the unit clicks everytime I fast forward or rewind. This did not occur on the Denon 2113
4. Internet music is slower to respond than the Denon 2113 that it replaced
5. No airplay. I knew this going in, but there is no excuse on a $1,000 to not offer this important feature
6. I hate the included remote. Luckily I can control it with my iPhone, but the app also leaves a lot to be desired
Also, Amazon does not double box the receiver when you get it shipped from them. The first box arrived in good condition, but did not work properly. The second box arrived heavily damaged with the interior styrofoam broken, but the unit worked properly. Amazon, please double box expensive electronics in the future.
The Onkyo 818 is a great receiver for under $1,000. All but the most demanding audiophiles will be impressed with this machine notwithstanding some of the minor quirks I noted above.

It has great sound for the audio and I can hook up all the other pieces to it now with the 8 HDMI inputs on the back.

I love this damn thing. I mean ya almost have too get professional equipment in order too get sound like this. I especially like it with my gaming set up. Hdmi inputs all over the place.

You may look at the price of this receiver and wonder how I can call it a value. Well, it simply enhances both video (especially on an already calibrated TV) and sound demonstrably and it is very difficult to point out another HT component that can do so. This receiver has separate block construction, which encouraged me to use it's video features, where in the past I was skeptical of putting video through a receiver. The video on every source is enhanced, the best 2d picture I have ever seen (except on 4k sets) - flawless. Bluray/360 Games/Satellite/Xbox amazing clear picture, no lag or artifacts and best of all for me (since my TV lacks it) gamma control. I added 2 height speakers to pair with this receiver for 7.1 sound and even commercials have never before heard music blended perfectly into the mix. The Audessy calibration was nearly perfect for my imperfect room and setup. The bass (once LFE level and crossover is set) is clear, tight and lacks any muddiness. Basically this was a 1k upgrade worth 5 times that much in HT performance.

In comparison to the Pioneer 1522, the Onkyo is very nice on the sound front and bests it. However the video scaling is not up to par and I am not able to get the colors right out of it. The Pioneer 1522, on the other hand, is unbelievable for video scaling. Ended up returning it. Also the product, for a "like new" item from Amazon warehouse deals, ended up looking like a refurbished product with really bad packaging.

I have been a user of Onkyo for years. I replaced my last one due to the hdmi board failure. This one tops all others that I have heard. The 3D, Network, and Audio return all work like a charm. I would highly recommend this to anyone that is on the fence about this or another receiver.

Receiver works as describe it. The dual HDMI output did not work as I expected. I have 2 projector connect to the unit. One is 3D, the other non-3D. If the you want to play 3D mode, you must change the Monitor out on the receiver to Main HDMI out only. Plus I have to do it on the receiver, not on the remote. Everything else seems to work good.

Paidbe $400 extra just for the xt32 after reading avsforums about how great it is. Don't fall for the gimmic and don't make the same mistake. Xt32 might be great but I can't tell the difference. Pyou have to be a Mozart or really really into music or sound to know the corecction difference. Its a great recover hence the 4 sytars but its not worth iptading just for the sake of 32xt auddeysey

Well i did not buy this receiver from amazon, i picked it from a onkyo distributor where i live by. Just wanted to share my review about this awesome receiver, using a 7.1 channel setup with Focal audio Chorus 836V, Chorus SR 800 V, Chorus CC 800 V, Chorus SW 800 V , i have to admit never had the best movie viewing experience for years after i got Onkyo TX NR5010, every detail is so crisp and real bang and thump no loss of detail of the movie even at low volumes, when cranked high makes me feel im among it. Just mere words cant describe the details of this receiver you have to listen to it.

This has been the perfect replacement from my Denon 2809 (damaged in lightning storm). I tried the Yamaha and another Denon before sticking with this model. I cannot say which one sounds better before speaker calibration but after I used the XT32 speaker calibration, the Onkyo sounded the best out of all of them by far with the Yamaha sounding the worst..not bad but not as good as the Denon and Onkyo. I received this unit after they updated the software . I can honestly say that this receive has had zero issues and runs extremely cool. This is in a cabinet with 2 temp sensitive cabinet fans exhausting heat away from the cabinet that activate once it reaches above91F. The only time the fans come on is in the summertime when the ambient temp are already high. I use it for Pandora, AppleTv, BluRay, my Mac is hooked it, etc. I use the receiver anytime I watch TFV since I do not use the cheap TV speakers on my LED TV so reliability is very important to me and of course the sound. I PROMISE you will not be disappointed. For the money, this is the best receiver out there and I have tried them all in $1k price range.

After long consideration and much investigative work I decided on this AV unit. I currently own an Onkyo AV receiver that is several years old. The unit has never given one moments
problem. I decided to buy the N818 because of the my past experience with Onkyo and quality and the need for 3D. The new receiver arrived very quickly do to Amazon's quick shipping and
great service. Setup was a breeze as with my older unit. The picture was amazing with functions and settings a snap. During the installation I was reminded several times to update the firmware
and declined. Finally on the 3rd day I decide to go ahead and update the firmware. The unit needed two updates and after about an hour it was all finished. Now that was my big mistake. The
video quality was absolutely horrible. It did not matter what settings I tried there was no helping the video. Noise was all over the screen,resolution was horrible. And since the firmware had been written there was no backing it up or uninstalling it. Luckily I contacted Amazon and they immediately sent out a new receiver. This company is top notch on returns. I received the second receiver overnight and quality is back as before. Just like with a computer if you do not need to do an update don't do it. My new 818 will not receive any additional updates nor will it have internet access. If it is not broke don't fix it. I only have one other small gripe. I wish, as with my older unit, the owners manual was in book form instead of a cd. If this unit is as good
as my older unit it should give me several years of good service.

This product is really good, but only a small problem annoy me all the time. It seems this receiver doesn't going well with my Panasonic 3D Plasma TV(UT50). One side of the image always go out of the screen area, left or right, and leave the other side of the screen a black edge. Although it's only about 10 pixels, it still makes me feel bad, according to my career.
I hope Onkyo will fix this problem in the next update, or I won't consider this brand any more in the future.

Audyssey XT-32 Ability to have Heights + Wides with an extra AMP, 3D pass-through.
Use HDMI 2 Sub out for the cleanest pass-through signal as that output has no video processing on it.
There can be issues with Deep Color on this receiver, most sources have Deep Color, like PS3, so you can turn it off on the receiver. Or just use HDMI 2 Sub out.

I bought a full THX Ultra speaker system around 1 year ago but never bought a THX receiver to match them since I was going to wait until I built a dedicated home theater room. I couldn't pass up the deal amazon had the weekend of Black Friday though, so I bit the bullet and am extremely glad I did! Funny thing is that I don't really find myself using the THX settings besides keeping the crossovers at 80HZ, mainly because e Audyssey XT32 sounds amazing! This receiver does everything anyone could ask for at this price point including being ISF certified which I plan on utilizing once I purchase a projector. The firmware update did take about 45 minutes to complete, which I chose to do immediately before doing any initial set-up and it has worked flawlessly since.
For the last year I had been disappointed in the quite expensive THX speaker system I purchased but not anymore! This receiver brought out every little intricacy in the soundtracks that the speakers are designed to reproduce and it does it effortlessly. I'd definitely recommend this receiver!

JUST TO BEGIN I HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE WITH ONKYO BEFORE, THE TX-SR606, AND IT HAD ITS FLAWS, NOT MANY BUT IT HAD THEM, UP-GRADED TO A DENON AVR-1911, AWESOME SOUND BUT LIMITED INPUTS, NO INTERNET ACCESS, THEN I PURCHASED THIS TX-NR818, OUT OF THE BOX THIS SUCKERS HEAVY, BIGGER THAN I EXPECTED, BUT WOW THE SETUP WAS THE EASIEST IVE EVER WENT THROUGH, THE ON SCREEN SETUP WAS JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED, THE SOUND IS WELL IN A WORD, INCREDIBLE !!, SO MANY DIFFERENT AUDIO OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM, AND THEY ACTUALLY WORK WHEN YOU CHOOSE THEM, THE VIDEO IS CRAZY GOOD AS WELL, NETWORK ACCESS IS A REAL PLUS, DID A FIRMWARE UPDATE IN ABOUT SEVEN MINUTES, THIS IS PROBABLY ABOUT THE BEST RECEIVER IVE EVER OWNED, IF OTHERS REVIEW THIS BADLY, ITS PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT WHAT THEYRE DOING, THERE IS A REASON ITS CONSTANTLY SOLD OUT AT BEST BUY, GET IT AT AMAZON THOUGH, YOULL SAVE ABOUT 500.00 ON THE PURCHASE PRICE, RETAILS FOR ABOUT 1200.00 ANYWHERE ELSE.

Bought it when it was going for 679.99. Problems from the get go. NOTHING will respond via HDMI except my pc. Everything else will not provide picture. Wii U did when I first tried it out. Go back to play, and nothing. PS3 will only show in 1080i (yes i have a 1080p tv) and that's only if it's set to through on avr. It will send 1080p but only when the avr is set to 1080p/24 which makes everything on the screen laggy. Same thing with XBOX and Oppo player. Have tried every combination of HDMI pass-through and resolutions in HDMI menu but nothing. Onkyo tech support is a joke, absolutely NO help. Factory reset and a clean plug and play along with 4 different HDMI cables ranging from cheap monoprice ones to others of a couple hundred dollars do nothing either. I was aware of certain HDMI board issues with these but had no idea that it may just NOT WORK. Never thought I'd miss my buggy UMC-1 but man it was hell of a lot better then this.
