Amazing AVR for the money. I've owned quite a few AVRs including Onkyo, Yamaha, Marantz, Pioneer, and Rotel, and have friends with Sonys; this unit is a home run in the value, lower-mid-range ($800-$1500 range) AVR range. I do not believe you can do better in 2012 AVR performance for your money, as the 818 provides power and features typically found in higher-end models.

(Price note: Purchased the NR818 8/2012 for $850 shipped to my door from an authorized Onkyo dealer. The NR818 can be had for this price or less if you call an authorized dealer and negotiate. Onkyo now enforces published price protection with their authorized dealers, so deep discounts aren't advertised but are available.)

1. Home Theater: Onkyo typically performs well at HT and the NR818 is a prime example. Excellent, clear imaging. The midbass and LFE bass for HT are strong, smooth, and clear - perhaps the strongest and clearest I have heard in an AVR in this price-range. Other HT features:

- DSP Modes: too many DSP modes to list. NEO:X shines for those of you wanting to run up to 11 speakers (with outboard amps). I typically use Dolby Direct combined with THX Cinema DSP for everything from DTS-HD HT content to XBOX 5.1 gaming. There are also specific gaming DSP modes that add more bass boom if you prefer.

- 7 HDMI inputs. Everything is moving to HDMI. Any AVR with 4 or 5 inputs is going to be obsolete in 2 years.

- Setup: decent on-screen menus for speaker setup and tuning. Yamaha and Denon are noticeably better here but the Onkyo UI is servicable.

- Tuning and EQ: great room correction and EQ software implementation! Includes both Dolby & Audyssey dynamic EQ and volume for late night/low-volume HT viewing.

- Raw power: Onkyo AVRs are known for packing a lot of clean punch and the NR818 definitely has balls here. Most entry to mid-level AVRs lack the power for smooth performance above THX-reference levels (85 db) in midsize rooms. The NR818 easily produces 85db in a 3300 sq/ft room. For reference: I am running fairly efficient speakers rated: 90-92db, 6ohms nominal with no ohm swings (Arx A5's). The NR818 hits Dolby Reference around low 70's volume setting in our room. YMMV if you are running really inefficient speakers but the NR818 should be able to power even small to mid-size Magnepans decently in smaller rooms.

2. Stereo Music capabilities: The NR818 does well here - and I own two dedicated Stereo systems, and have owned many more. For reference-CD listening I run the NR818 in Pure Direct mode - which turns off all AV processing, crossovers, display, and only powers essential amplification electronics. I find the performance and sound-quality through two full-frequency towers to be excellent.

I run "Stereo" mode and engage the subs, crossovers, and Audyssey EQ (for sub filters) for wide-frequency-range modern music (Skrillex, Amon Tobin, etc.) or hip-hop with digital bass. For playing compressed music files (MP3/MP4s) from an iTunes server or network storage share - I also use the NR818 compressed-music file up-converter which noticeably reduces the "plastic spoon" drum effect that MP3s often introduce, as well as other compression artifacts.

3. On-Screen UI & Menus: Compared to the rest of the AVR field - Onkyo is average here. If you want nice onscreen menus - Denon and Yamaha are two of the better UI players here, with Pioneer behind them. Even Sony does better. One area Onkyo does shine though is providing regular firmware updates to address bugs and support for components you may plug into your AVR.

I should note that I do not use the Onkyo for navigating or playing music files off my network. I run a digital media server (iTunes server) though there are many free ones you run yourself, and I use an AppleTV and iPad to navigate and use my digital music. Many reviewers have complained that the Onkyo falls short as a digital music player, and I can't speak to that. For me the AVR is the wrong tool for that job. They all suck here, IMO.

The AVR makers are dinosaurs when it comes to Operating Systems and UIs - so the bar is pretty low. Emotiva is the only vendor I know of that is pushing modern operating systems in AV equipment. Let's hope they get things right with their next pre/pro release and stir this market up.

4. Physical remote, and Remote Control Apps: I like the included physical remote though I miss having dedicated buttons for switching to Stereo and Pure Direct listening modes. You have to use the DSP buttons to rotate through a dozen modes to find them, which sucks. It is too complicated for my SO to use the modes. The remote is also not back-lit and we often have to turn on the lights to find buttons. Also - the menu buttons do not work with many of the menu functions of our Panasonic BDT-210. Hopefully remotes don't matter and will be replaced by our tablets and smartphones

Так что если вы ищете 7.1 или 5.1.2 система я очень рекомендую этот один, он также может работать с 2 сабов. С нетерпением жду ДЦ-х прошивка.

Простота установки с автоматическая калибровка звука с музыкой я лично нашел немного груб с басом, но после тонкой настройки " ОК " объемный звук с фильмов отличное, один недостаток этой системы, который является, почему я отправил обратно на HDMI руку пожать очень плохая связь заняло несколько минут, пока экране и усилителя будет синхронизировать даже с тональнозвуковой возвращенный канал выключается и все дополнительные HDMI авто-калибровка выключена этого был подключен к Панасоник 58 передача 4К и PS4 все правильно подключено. I'm going to be honest, this is my first Onkyo receiver. As a owner of other great receivers from Denon & Yamaha, I was looking for a new powerful receiver, the Onkyo TXNR818 was just what I was looking for. Is 1 of 4 high-end audio receivers from Onkyo (2012), this is a 7.2ch receiver with 135w x 7ch of pure muscle. It packs the latest surround formats including the new DTS NEO: X and has the latest Audyssey MULTEQ XT32 calibration tool on which you'll get outstanding performance and some improvements over the original MULTEQ. At this price range Onkyo was able to put as many features as possible including; THX Select 2 Plus Certified, HDMI Support for 3D Video, 9.1 Pre Outs for audio and future expandability, Dual Core Video Engine with HQV Vida and Marvell Qdeo Processing just to name a few.

Before I let you know how this receiver performs , there are some minor drawbacks you should know. First, this receiver lacks AirPlay Support, wi-fi and bluetooth (a wireless and bluetooth adapter is sold separately) which I found inexcusable at this price; take note Onkyo, the new Sony STR-DN1030 offer these great features for a unit half the price. Second, the remote control is not fully backlit and while the GUI display is easy to navigate is far from the quality of those found on Yamaha or Denon receivers, in fact its a shame that it has a low resolution GUI and the icons are very ugly. This is one heavy receiver, over 40 pounds, 17 inches (wide) x 17 (depth) x 7 1/2 (heigth), is even deeper than my Def Tech StudioMonitor 65, so a very strong space in your entertainment center should be considered. Another thing that capture my atention was that the volume knob felt a bit loose and to soft. For some strange reason every time you adjust the tone controls the receiver cuts the audio for about a second, this issue has been reported in some forums.

Movie Performance:
There are a lot of Blu Ray movies that can be used as reference for audio and video, Battle LA & MI: Ghost Protocol are an example of pure surround madness. The alien invasion sounded clean, powerful and robust. The battle scene on the highway bridge is spectacularly loud and bombastic, the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack rattles walls with a thunderous, authoritative low end. The rear effects are discrete and precise, generating an immersive 360-degree soundfield. The explosion of the Kremlin in MI:GP will shake your ground, and talked about the sandstorm scene in Dubai, you better have some goggles like Tom Cruise had. The sound of the wind and sand particles moving across my living room was an experience. 03/16/2013 Update - Listen to these other BD chapters; Transformers Rise of the Fallen / the fight in the forest is simply awesome and crunching, Looper / sweet deep bass in chapter 13, Minoroty Report / the force wave shotgun, one word Boombastic!!!. The 2012 version of Red Dawn sounded magnificent, the fire fight scenes and explosions are a thrilling experience and the TXNR818 will make you run for cover. Also Air Force One is almost two decades old, back in 1997 it was impresive on the DVD format and now the Blu Ray version is no exception. It's still has one of the most powerful and engaging surround sound mixes ever recorded, believe me.

Music Performance:
Listening to Jason Mraz's The Freedom Song (live) sounded natural, the TXNR818 rendered it all very clearly and in distinct with excellent separation of the instruments, you can close your eyes and literally feel the music right in front of you, also the voices are heard clean and vivid. I love Latin jazz so there is nothing better than listening to Eddie Palmieri's Album CD "Arete". Congas and timpani discharge have a fascinating sound and to some extent may feel natural bass that emit between the clash of the Palm of the hand and the leather of the congas, the detail that capture the TXNR818 is amazing. Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon is a powerful rock album, from the opening clock sounds to Mason drums to Syd guitar solo, "Time" sounded just stunning on the 818.

In conclusion the TXNR818 is a great overall receiver, it has excellent video performence, powerful clean sound and plenty of inputs. So far I have been playing with this monstrous AVR for over seven months and I have done 2 firmware updates with no problems to report. I could be talking about other great features, like ISF calibration tools, XT32, DTS Neo: X, THX and more, but I'm the kind of person that will tell you to test this great AVR for yourself and make your own judgement. Some people have complaint about faulty units, but make sure you buy one from an authorize dealer to avoid any upset. Onkyo has done a great entrance in the audiophile world, and even that there are plenty areas were Onkyo can improve, they have done an excellent job to have a truly high-end receiver below the $1,000 mark.Like they say "High-End Home Theater Performance Starts Here" and sure it do

Это лучшее звучание приемника я когда-либо владел. Предыдущие будучи пионером элиты sc25 также компания Onkyo ТХ-sr805 и многие другие в прошлом . Низкие ноты опуститься до 5Гц и и эквалайзером регулируемый вплоть до 25Гц . Звук кристально чистый и удивительно. Я тоже как-то в 7 канала динамиков. У меня нет комнаты для 9 или 11 колонок. Это и есть Долби Атмос готов и DTS X через (загрузка прошивки) в будущем. Я бегу Долби Атмос в 5.1.2 настройка динамиков и звучит внушительно. Нажать на курок и купить этот один . Вы не пожалеете об этом .

Поэтому я распечатал и прочитал всю "расширенный" руководство по эксплуатации, проверил все настройки, запустил снова через настройки динамик - не повезло. Итак, я поменял блок, подключил все обратно, и та же проклятая вещь случилась. Я сменил его на модель RX-V675 и это работает как шарм! Мой муж может воск все технические, гулянка. Меня не волнует, почему это так хорошо, я просто слышу разницу. Это наша игровая система, Наш mp3s, и наши внешние динамики. Потратить лишние сто или так и двигаться дальше.

Несколько портов HDMI уже начал терять связь с ТИВО болт.<бр /><бр />ЦИК не работает с Apple TV, Если дополнительных устройств HDMI подключены, как ТИВО болт, и ПС4.<БР />
я буду искать гарантийный ремонт, у других эти проблемы с HDMI?

Well, it turns out that the infamous unreliability of Onkyo receiver showed up at my door too.
The latest firmware upgrade, even though I followed religiously all the documented steps found on the instructions provided by Onkyo web site, bricked the receiver. I had to take it to the repair center here in Montreal: first fix, replacement of the infamous HDMI board, did not work, as the upgrade I had to do at home (at the service center they were just too lazy to do also the firmware upgrade...) bricked it again. It is now back at the service center now for a total of 5 weeks. Onkyo is slow to send parts according to the service centers and they do not even return their calls.
Long story short, a very nice receiver when working but, give this experience, I finally believe that the unreliability of the Onkyo receivers is just real and I will not purchase one again. I will be soon posting this receiver for sale if I get it back fully functional and buy a Pioneer elite or another Denon. I now see what those tend to be more expensive than Onkyos: they must be built with better parts. Very disappointed customer.

This is an excellent receiver which will replace another excellent AVR, a Denon 3312.
I had no real complaints for my Denon AVR-3312: you can find always some complaints in AVS forum for just anything in the marker, and that was no exeception. My experience has been only smooth, no bugs, no malfunctioning: simply stated, no issues and a great sounding receiver. My only complaint is with the Audyssey implementation preventing users to customize treble and bass when Audyssey is engaged: I'd personally prefer to boost the treble a bit when watching movies to emphaisize dialogues. You can't do that on the Denon, you can on the Onkyo.
Reading about Audyssey MultiEQ32 and the marvels it's supposed to do... I decided to give the Onkyo 818 a try. A try in my home as I do not believe you can test anything other than in your listening environment (I learned this by testing speakers in stores...). This is the very first Onkyo for me and I was most curious to check what level of sound quality this brand can deliver. I need ti specify that my intended usage is 90% music and 10% movies; for TV I am not really picky, I'd also listen directly through my TV speakers without whining too much.
By reading forums and specialized reviews I am under the impression that Marantz and Denon are more highly regarded than Onkyo among reviewers as far as music sound quality is concerned. However, it is my impression after 3 weeks of comparison between the 2 that I prefer the Onkyo 818 sound vs. the Denon 3312. I have 2 speakers set presently plugged to them (obviously switching each others): an all Polk RTiA set (A3, A1, C4; not very recognized in the audiophile arena, but I really like them) and a all Paradigm Monitor v.7 set (4xMini, 1xCenter1). In my subjective opinion the Onkyo drives better both, in a way which I would describe as more lively and dynamic. They both sound bright and clear (which is a plus for my tastes), the Onkyo perhaps slightly more so. The music type I listen, if that may be relevant, are Jazz, modern Tango, Flamenco and Downtempo electronica (chillout).
In movies I believe the Onkyo has a more evident advantage; however, as explained, for me that is not a decision factor.
With regard to Audyssey MultiEQ XT32 I have not been overly-impressed. It did a fine job but also the XT of the Denon does. I did notice the microphone included with the Onkyo to be quite a bit more sensitive than the one included with the Denon (DM-409): calibration with the former resulted into better results on BOTH receivers, in my assessment, and also in slightly different parameters.
GUI is on par, in my assessment. Onyo remote is quite better: "feels" better and all cods for driving other pieces of electronics work well.
Other advantage of the Onkyo is the ability to connect to more HD radio (i.e. LastFM, Spotify, MP3tunes: all of those are unavailable in the Denon 3312).
Temperature is very comparable: surprisingly (for what i had read) the Onkyo seems to run slightly cooler.
Video upconversion is quite noticeably better on the Onkyo, which offers many more settings to tune the picture from just any source.
In summary, I have decided to sell the Denon 3312 and keep the Onkyo. I would not really say that the difference between the 2 is night and day: not at all. They are quite close but in most respects I have found the Onkyo to do a bit better job.
