The biggest difference of the Wii compared to the PS3 and 360 is that it offers a substantially different approach to gaming. Because the controller is designed to be moved, swung, shaken, jerked (but not thrown at the TV) you need to stand up, move around and use your body. That's a far cry from letting your fingers do the gaming (like you do in a typical PS3 or 360 controller).
The PS3 and 360 are more powerful graphics machines. They are designed to take advantage of our new HDTVs and give us amazing graphics. You bet, they really do. Hence you pay a lot more for it. But, the Wii has proven that you really can have fun by allowing more interaction with the game's content, despite using the "old" (standard) definition TV. Critics will go on and on about how great the PS3 and 360 technology is but games are more about having FUN and less about having a romance with technology.
Furthermore, if you are a parent who's paying for your kid's gaming, then you might want to consider BALANCING the kind or themes of games your kid is playing. I have noticed that the PS3 and 360 games my kids buy are tilted towards getting their excitement up with shooting and explosions. With the Wii, the games are more of the jumping up and down, arm swinging, and body movement kind of fun.
This leads to my final observation. All the body movement required to play many (but not all) of the Wii games contribute a few points for anti-obesity. I'm shocked at the number of hours my kids could sit down to play games on their consoles, use their PCs, and watch TV when all I could do as a kid back in my time was to ride a bike or play ball.
250 bucks is not too much to pay for the fun the Wii provides. I hope Nintendo has got a lot of imagination up its sleeves because it take a lot of it to make more games that can really use and benefit from the Wii controller and nunchucks.

Unfortunately my first Wii was DOA as the unit will not accept the disc. Nintendo customer support was great and got a replacement in 3 business days.
The graphics may not be like the XBox 360 or PS3 but the fun factor is there. Games like Super Mario Party 8 and Big Brain Acadamy can bring many hours of play time enjoyment with friends and family. The size of the Wii is small so I place it on top of my DVD player.
If you're looking for a Wii I highly recommend calling Best Buy and ask them when it's going to come out and be prepared to wait in line for a couple of hours or more.
I also recommend picking up Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Party 8.
The Wii only comes with one Wii Remote and a Nunchuk. I recommend picking up a 2nd Wii remote and nunchuk.
Pros: Fun Factor! Low cost! Small Size Built in Wireless Internet
Cons: Way too hard to find. Should come with a 2nd Wii Remote.

Overal this is the greatest system yet for nintendo.

Backwards compatibility is a plus and being able to buy games from yesteryear is a hoot!

The Wii has games for everybody alike. You don't have to purchase the kid games if you don't want to; there are plenty of other options. And with Legend of Zelda, Smash Brothers coming out in December, Guitar Hero III in October, Resident Evil, Mario Kart Wii next year, Metroid Prime: Corruption (which is out already), and even a Mario and Sonic Olympic game (which looks good), there are games that can satisfy even a college guy. There's also Madden 08. It's nice to see that you basically do the action that the character is doing.
The good thing about the Wii is that the online feature is free. More and more games are going to be coming out for online play, through WiFi connection. Guitar Hero III, Smash Brothers, Pokemon, Mario Strikers Charged, and others in the future. Though I liked Xbox Live, the Wii's online will only improve with games in the future, and if you don't have to spend money on that, then the better.
Overall, the system is good for anybody, new or experienced at video games. It's simple to get used to, and yet brings difficulty to people who want a challenge. Get into the game!

I'll just tell you that I purchased 2 units for Christmas last year for the game room and for the family room. The kids love it; the games we've played are mostly "Very Good" to "Excellent".
The units come in handy for family gatherings as well. Everyone can play the Wii-Sports games and several other party-game titles. It's the modern version of playing charades.
The other cool feature we like is the Wii acts like a computer. You connect your Wii to your home's Wi-Fi signal and you can send & receive email, surf the net, send memos, send Wii points as gifts, send & receive photos, as well as participate in Voting Polls (national and international).
It's a seriously fun unit and worth the $250.00.

Nintendo has really created a NEW DIMENSION IN GAMING with this interactive style of play. I tried to get a PS3 on launch day and couldn't. I spoke to my 18 year old son who's an incredible gamer and he told me about what he had heard about the soon-to-be-launched Wii. I am really glad I looked into it and bought. I'm sure the other systems are great and in terms of graphics, are far more advanced than the Wii. However, I am very happy with this and I paid less for the system, extra controllers, and three extra games than I would have paid for the PS3 console alone, had I been able to get one.
If you can, for 5 minutes, look beyond the antiquated graphics and see the Wii for what it really is; a new INTERACTIVE GAMING EXPERIENCE and appreciate it for this then you'll conclude that Nintendo has really done much more in terms of breakthrough technology than either Sony or Microsoft. Sony and Microsoft created games that access EXISTING HDTV technology. Nintendo has accomplished far more in that they have seemingly INVENTED A NEW TECHNOLOGY or at least created a gaming system that shows that Nintendo's engineers really "thought out of the box" to bring player involvement in the game to a level never before achieved.
Also, from what I understand this system will play all previouisly released Nintendo games...remember Mario Brothers? I haven't tried it but I think that's par of the claim.

I would recomend this for someone who wants a console but wouldn't consider themselves a super-gamer. Anyone can pick this up and figure it out.
