After having my D40x for a year I was interested in all I heard the D90 could do. I am very glad I moved up to the D90. I am an everyday Joe photographer. I have only had the D90 for a month but feel I made the right choice. The D90 has many more choices/features when shooting pics: Multiple exposure, bulb, more focus points, live view. The movie feature works well. I would not use it to record a wedding but it allows me to get good/fun clips of events that I would never had before unless I carried a camcorder and my camera. I know i am only using about half of what the D90 has to offer. The longer I own it, the more I learn what it can do to help me get better pics.

I used to have a Sony Alpha -- it was my first DSLR camera -- which was ok as an initial step in getting to know the basic aspects of photography. With the D90 for one month I can see how the equipment has more to offer, and the results much better than I expected.If you are thinking of buying one, go ahead, it's worth it.

Fanboy:I know the price is more then a point and shoot - but you get what you pay for. Having owned a digital camera since 1999, and those all bring little point and shoot clicker - I have accumulated around 7000 digital pictures before I bought this camera in Nov 09. I now have around 10000! In 3 months I have almost taken half the amount that I took in 9 years!Good:The image quality is outstanding. The camera body is hefty enough to feel strong buy not to heavy to use for long periods of time. Built in flash works like a champ. Battery lasts FOREVER - I think we charge weekly and shoot pictures almost everyday!Bad(If you could call it that):Lens is a built to "multitasking" - Does a bunch of things good - Not 1 thing great.Steep - steep learning curve if you want to learn and use every feature.Camera sometime freezes causing a battery removal. This happens few and far between.I couldn't recommend this more.

The camera freezes while shutting. No button will unfreeze it. Removing the battery and turning it back ON works. Call Nikon customer service after 2 weeks of buying the camera. They just ask you to send in the camera for repair (shipping paid by customer, nice policy...) and they wont send it back for 10 days. Like one is supposed to have spare cameras in case a 900 dollar camera fails...Otherwise the camera would be great.

I am new to this world of DSLR. I had done my reserch before buying D90. I was very impressed to read about the high ISO capabilities of D90.But when i used a high ISO value (1600) the results were not too appeciable. I could see some red/green spots scattered across. Again this was only when i used a high ISO value.But apart from this issue, i love my D90. I not planning to return it back for any other product. As people say the Build quality was amazing.The shutter sound is just gr8. 4.5 frames per second is very fast. You will really turn heads when u are shooting at that fps. Picture quality is awsome. Again gr8 ergonomics. One might find the size and weight a bit high compared to the low end DSLR model. But again it is just fine for my hands (I am 6 feet tall).Overall I am a very satisfied coustomer and would recommend this to any one who is new to the DSLR world. Very easy to learn the controls :)Happy Shooting...

I won't get into all the details, which are covered in the other lengthy reviews. I've researched this camera alot! I've decided to retire my Canon and Olympus cameras and take advantage of my boyfriend's huge selection of Nikon lenses and accessories (he just bought a D300 to replace his brand new D200!) I've having so much fun with this new camera. One complaint, Live View! Focusing takes soooooo long, compared with the Olympus and Canon. I shoot low a lot and this is a function that I've habitually used with my Canon. I guess I'll get over that habit quickly and find other ways to quick-shoot without the hassle of Live View. I'll use it only for framing. I shoot one-handed more than not, and the ergonomics of this camera are perfect for my style. It's also very light-weight. I got the kit with the 18-105 lens. This has been a fine multi-purpose for my shooting so far. I still give it a 5-star rating. What a fabulous camera.

I'm an eighteen year old amateur who started out with a D40x last year. I've been taking a ton of photos for my school's yearbook (the biggest in the world!) and I was getting a lot more serious about photography. About 3 months ago, I decided to upgrade, mostly for the greater range of customization.I have a few friends with canons who actually suggested Nikon and I can safely say that I am MORE than satisfied with my choice to go with the D90. I LOVE it. The picture quality is great, the video (though I don't use it much) is a great feature and has amazing quality, and everything else about it is so functional.I highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants to upgrade and get a little more serious about photography!

This is a wonderful camera... I owned (and still own) a nikon D50 which I will use as a backup. My wife no longer needs to put on her glasses when I take a picture and show her on the 3 inch (incredible resolution) screen. I cant go on and on like other people about cameras, all I can say is I am not disappointed in this product. I bought it for the camera itself I have not taken any HD video with it... that was never my intent. Its like a "nice backup" if i ever need it. My only regret? Buying a camera that has anything to do with any association with Aston Kutcher... This camera has allot more talent than he has.

Brand new Nikon D90 "CHR" error, camera lock up after 22 shots.Common error with Nikon.Responses point to the memory card not being approved, camera itself, or battery. Nikon said on the phone today that it's the memory card. It has to be an approved card.Jan 2010 UPDATE: Frustrating as this was, I kept the camera. Use approved card. So far no major problems. I always, always keep extra "approved cards" on hand.

Awesome picture quality, same as my D300. It is much more plasticy than a D300, but I like it because it's much lighter and fits my hands perfectly. There isn't an obvious video button, but it was easy to figure out once you hit the LV (live view) button it prompts you to press OK to start recording. The top LCD screen is smaller than the D300. The 3 inch screen is amazing, just like the D300. This is a huge leap forward compared to the D80. It's an even bigger leap that they've pulled off high quality video that's user friendly! Put a Sigma 10-20mm or the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye, and you'll have some epic video shots. The 18-105VR lens is lighter than it looks, much lighter than the 18-200VR, feels very solid and is quite smooth. The standard definition video is good (haven't watched it on a large screen yet), and gives you 20 minute clips vs 5 min clips in HD mode. The zoom also worked when in video mode, but the Autofocus is fixed. Once in LiveView it takes a second to autofocus, then you can press OK and start recording. Sound isn't stellar of course. It has a small microphone and speaker, so you can actually hear the video your reviewing. So far this is my favorite new gadget of 2008. Wedding Videographer's rejoice! (i'm shooting one next week)

Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)This is a really good digital SLR camera for someone who is serious about the pictures they take (want much better quality than a point-and-shoot camera can give), but who wants the camera to be able to take most pictures automatically. There are lots of bells and whistles on this camera to help control the picture quality both before and after you take the picture, but you really can set this camera on one of its automatic settings and click away -- and, you'll be amazed at the quality of the pictures. Wow! I would recommend this camera for photographers that used high end film cameras many years ago, and are not satisfied with today's point and shoot cameras. I take mostly family pictures at gatherings, and landscape pictures (mountains and sunsets), but I think one could use this camera for portrait photography, sports photography, and wedding photography with good to very good results. This is the best camera I have used in 15 years or more....

I currently own a Nikon D90 w/ Nikon 16-85mm 3.5-5.6 & Sigma 50mm 1.4 and Canon 50D Ef 24-105mm F4 & Ef 16-35 F2.8, both are really great cameras. But I like the Nikon D90 more, because I don't have to spend crazy amount of money on Lens to get a "IQ" like my Canon 50D, which I spent almost 3.5K. With Nikon 16-85mm I can get really nice IQ just like my 50D. And I can also record a video clip when I need to, I found out this is somehow pretty handful sometime when I want to capture something more than just picture. Over all I prefer Nikon D90 over Canon 50D for the cost, don't get me wrong, Canon 50D does feel really solid and take really nice picture with the "L" lens too, but just too much If you want the IQ like you see on Internet or some forum.

I had the D70 and never thought I would need to upgrade soon since it did almost everything I want it to. Well, that is, until Nikon introduced cameras with more points of focus, since I hated having to recompose after I've focused due to the limited areas of focus on the D70. I hesitated on making a purchase until someone offered to buy my camera as soon I mentioned that I wanted to upgrade. I'm glad I got the D90. It's very much like the D70 but new and improved. The LCD is much bigger. And the zoom ability is so much better. More points of focus of course. It does great with higher ISO settings than the D70. I like how the D70 feels in my hands and the D90 is the same. So yes, it's a great camera for me.

Don't buy this camera until Nikon resolves the card read error and the lens error problems. These are widespread and can be quickly found - discussed in forums, etc. I just realized that there is only 45 day return period with amazon - so it looks like I will be sending back to Nikon (hope my results are better than the other reviewer here who had to return). You should be redirecting your attention to the Canons - wish I had.

This camera really exeeded my expectations about a DSLR. This is the first DSLR I own but I've tried several different DSLRs and now stick to Nikon. D90 rocks!Lots of customizations, real freedom for creativity on non-auto modes, ease of use, really smart focusing mechanism (11 smart focusing points), cotrols (function and positioning on the body) are designed to help the artist frame, focus and compose the shot the best way. No words for image quality...My best purchase ever!

This camera is just plain awesome. Unless you use a camera all day, every day and need the extra toughness that a metal body might give you, this thing will probably handle any possible photographic situation you would encounter. It has adjustments for just about everything, yet takes a real fine shot by just setting it to AUTO right out of the box. Read the review by KenRockwell.com on the D90 (Google will find it for you) before you plunk down twice as much money for a D300. I am not a photography buff, and I don't know a lot about cameras, but this camera is amazing! It has all the bells and whistles, but is extremely easy to use (with a bit of reading the manual). The pictures come out looking professional (of which I am definitely not), and I have started taking more pictures just because I enjoy using this camera so much! I have had it for 3 months, and the more I use it, the more I love it. I consider this camera an investment well worth the expense.

The "Live View" feature is not usable to take still photos. It takes several seconds to do autofocus and the shutter delay and mirror vibration are significant.When the camera is in Live View mode, the mirror is flipped up, the shutter is open. Autofocus is done through software image processing through the image sensor. It takes at least two three seconds to focus on a subject with good contrast. And often the autofocus goes into "hunting" for several more seconds before it settles down.When shutter release is pressed in Live View, the camera closes the shutter, drop the mirror then lift the mirror and open the shutter. All these actions create a long shutter delay and significant vibration.Because the mirror is held in the up position and the shutter is open in Live View, it consumes a great amount of battery charge and produces a great amount of heat for the circuit.It appears that Live View is released before the design is ready.Another problem is that Nikon changed the raw file format. Weeks after the camera is on the market, the raw image file format is still not supported by PhotoShop or Nikon's own Capture NX2.

I absolutely adore this camera. I've heard people complain about the video quality, but if you go into the menu and make sure it's not set to record in HD the quality is the same as any other digital camera. Beside the video, which is the last thing I considered in my purchase, every other aspect of this camera is also fantastic. The D90 offers an incredible amount of control, but is not extremely complicated to operate. It also has plenty of great options for automatic settings that take stunning pictures. It's a perfect camera for the non-professional, but serious weekend photographer (like myself).

I always thought people who bought these type of cameras were geeks, and wasted their money. I recently had a newborn and couldn't get a good picture with my $300 camera, because she is always moving. This camera is worth every penny with so many good pictures. The 18-200 vr lense is a must with this camera. Thanks Nikon

Amazing in low light(very low noise at high ISO), fast, customizable, controls Speedlight Flashes wirelessly.If I would have to buy but one camera it would be this one.The video capability is very nice, but tricky.

As a very happy Nikon D80 user, I mostly bought the D90 for the Video feature. Unfortunately the Video just does NOT work well. Unless you are rock steady while hand holding the camera, you will get jumpy and distorted videos. Even while using a very good tripod you will get mixed results. Also the Video focus does not always stay locked on, so you can start in focus, and then lose it. Plus, if you are shooting Video in brite sun, it's often hard to tell if the focus has gotten locked because it's difficult to see the Video Focus lock indicator on the screen. On the plus side, I really like the new INFO button that puts the data on the top screen of the camera on to the rear screen at twice size. It's great if you need glasses to read the top screen. Also the rear screen is larger than the D80, which is very nice.The Camera has a mini HDMI output, but mine didn't come with a cable and they are tough to find right now. So you might want to buy one when you buy the camera.Other than the poor Video, I think this is a very good camera.

I'm very pleased with this camera. It shoots great images in the automatic mode and if you want to get creative with the manual modes, you won't be disappointed. Nikon offers a nice online tutorial to walk you through the camera too. The video mode is a nice feature as well. While it doesn't have an auto focus feature for the video mode it's still kind of nice because now I don't have to bring my camcorder and my still cameras.Here's the online tutorial:[...]
