I've only had the D5100 for a few days, and I love it. I loved it out of the box. Before buying it, I'd been considering the more expensive Nikon D7000 and the Canon EOS 60D. But being the type of guy who is in general very technology/gadget challenged, I knew I'd never use 90% of the available features on either camera, so I couldn't really justify the extra expense.What I love immediately about the D5100 is how easy it is to use right out of the box. Pictures are of course phenomenal, and in particular I've enjoyed using the "Night Vision" effect setting to capture some excellent black & white images of my pets in poor lighting without having to irritate them with a flash. Video is terrific and very easy to use. I expect I'll have a ton of fun with this camera.Cons? It's a bit plasticky feeling, but do I really care? No. I won't be lugging this camera to the top of Mt. Everest, nor shooting action pics in the rain. One issue is that it is virtually impossible to find a compatible fast fixed focal length 85mm+ portrait lens unless you want to spend significantly more than you paid for the camera itself - which I do not. For this camera's motor to drive the lens in AF, you will need to use AF-S/AF-I lenses only, and there are not a lot of great [fast] affordable portrait lens options in that class, IMHO. But being at most a very casual photo kind of guy, I can live with that shortcoming. The kit lens takes wonderful shots.Overall, I'm extremely pleased and I expect that anyone wanting a good camera for casual photo/video use will be as well.

My wife and I were planning an Alaskan cruise and I wanted a camera to capture the beauty I knew we would see. I had only used point and shot cameras in the past and was somewhat leary of moving into a camera that required greater knowledge about shutter speeds and other terms those with more experience discuss. I may have actually been one of the first to purchase the D5100 as I did so at the end of April 2011. I also purchased the Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLRto take on the trip. All I can say is WOW! The camera was easy to use with easy to understand icons guiding this amature to settings that allowed me to capture great moments. The quick shutter speed in the Sports mode allowed me to capture whales surfacing, eagles flying, and water melting from frozen waterfalles. The Sunset mode allowed me to capture awesome Alaskan sunsets with great color quality. I almost exclusively used the zoom lens. I also purchased the Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control for Nikon P7000, D3000, D40, D40x, D50, D5000, D60, D70, D7000, D70s, D80 & D90 Digital SLR Cameras, which along with a tripod allowed me to photograph my wife and my self in some awesome landscape photos. I love this camera. Friends who see our pictures ask me what camera I used. That says it all. If you are an amature photographer like me, I think you will find the D5100 easy to use and your friends will think you are a pro!

This was a gift for my wife from her son and I. It was her mother's day gift and she has not stopped taking pictures. She loves the way it captures motion shots.

I returned my D3100 for this one. Why? The D3100 was a great, inexpensive camera that took wonderful pictures. But I soon realized it lacked some features I truly wanted. The main feature I wanted that the D3100 lacked, was bracketing, so I can use the Photomatix program more easily to do HDR photography. It was well worth a few hundred bucks more, for me. The rest of it is just gravy, but I also like the added tilt/swivel display, infrared sensors for the remote control, and the in-camera high dynamic range photography. I also prefer how the controls are laid out, and the extra weight gives the camera a beefier feel.

I am new to DSLR cameras but decided to try the d5100 instead of the D3100, and I'm glad I did. The 3100 was in the price range that I was looking to spend but in using the camera and some of the functionality I found that it was mostly comparable but when it came down to usability and features I decided that I would grow into the 5100 sooner than later and why not move one step up instead of wishing I had 6 months into it. But realizing that I did not want to move into the d7100 because the price jump was just too much for me. Features were great and the only thing that was bad for me is that I ordered mine and the price dropped promptly the following weekend.Got the 50 - 200mm lens along with the standard 18-55. Finding myself using the zoom more often but found myself buying a prime 35mm lens for portrait type photos and indoor party scenes. Found that it responds a little better and although I am still learning how to use it I find that this lens is becoming my favorite. I probably would purchase a body only and only the lenses that I wanted if I had it to do over and probably will when I am ready to upgrade.Having fun learning to use this over my old point and shoot and will be doing some traveling this year and will update this review with some more real-world usage.

Canon T2i, T3i are all having manual video controls on F-stop, shutter speed and ISO,while the D5100 doesn't, period

Has anyone else had problems with the combination of the above setup. I am having exposure problems with this setup, the photos are too dark sometime.I have contacted Nikon, but they are no help whatsoever. Nikon needs to upgrade their Tech. Support or educate them.ThanksRay Sanders

I would have liked to know that my not-that-ancient version of Photoshop won't handle Nikon's new RAW files. Adding the cost of that software to the price of the camera was an unpleasant surprise.Based on some tech reviews I went against my own biases to purchase a Nikon, and I am sorry I did. Some of it is just getting to know the beast, but so far I'm not thrilled and we haven't bonded.

I spent a few months looking at the d7000, but I was afraid of some of the reported problems with dead pixels and overexposure. Plus, the d7000 is a lot of camera for someone like me. I know how to shoot in manual mode, but I don't always need to. Sometimes the scene modes are enough for me when I'm trying to get pictures on the fly. I'm just looking to take great pictures and I wanted a great camera with low-light performance.The d5100 turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. Don't underestimate the usefulness of the articulating screen. Its really great for taking self-portraits, or pictures of you and your friends when you don't have a tripod. I have used that feature alone a lot more than I thought I would, and this makes it well more suited than the d7000 for me. The d5100 is also alot lighter than the d7000, and I appreciate some of the gimmicky features that it has (the special scene modes, like sketch and miniature). No overexposure/metering issues in bright sunny days and the same low-light performance of the d5100 makes it a winner for me.Another point is that the battery life of the d5100 is really good. I thought it would be too short, especially when the d7000 gets almost twice as many shots as the d5100 on the included battery. But as long as you charge the battery each night, you should be fine for a full day's worth of shooting.

The leack of direct buttons like iso and metering mode from one hand and the usless info button from other hand make the camera controls rediculosanothet problem is if AF (auto focus ) selected as point the crosshair (focus area) can be moved by presing the arrow kaypad accidentally by the hand when holding the camera so the result is the focus move to the right of the frameand the object from the center is out of focusTo deal with this issue you shoud press the OK button that returns the focus point to the center before any shootthere isen't any option to cancel the focus point movment by the arrow pad from the manuThe info button is usless because by pressing the shutter botton half way the display turn on like you press the infothe picture quality is good specialy at higt ISO the sharpness have to be raised to maximum as with the 18-200 the pic is a bit softFor beginers the camera is very good especialy the on screen help for almost everything but for advanced users i would not recomand itNIKON !!!!! please add AF lock option in the menu !!!!!!Robert

I wanted a camera that was a little bit beyond me. I was tired of buying expensive point and click's only to have them stop working after 1 1/2 years...I shelled out decent money over 3 years for two coolpix...Nikon D5100 16.2MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens they were ok, but i was looking for something that produced more professional looking shots and to have a camera i could grow into. I had a problem with my D5100 at first, i couldn't get the darned thing to focus - it turned out to be a menu item was on AF-M instead of AF-C (auto focus continuous)...an easy fix, thank goodness. There is nothing i can't do with this camera. Yes, it cost some extra clamshells...but with proper maintainance and tlc, i know i'll have this camera and be satisfied with the results for a long time. I don't find it too cumbersome to deal with...i took it on a recent trip and was able to set up perfect shots quickly, and i didn't tire of it on my shoulder. This to me would have been a sticking point - to have a great camera but it being too heavy or awkward to be able to just point and shoot, that i wouldn't want to bring it everywhere and anywhere. It has the best of both worlds - the ease of a point and shoot with very impressive results.

The D5100 was a great camera for about 5 months. All of a sudden images where black. I called support and they had me fix it with a camera reset it worked. Two months goes by and the same issue again This time "reset" does not work. Other have had the same issues on the boards and Nikon support did not fix it when the camera was sent for repair. The Camera could be great but you can't depend that it will work when you need it. So you may be happy now but just wait. Nikon has a issue that they have not come to terms with. Save the couple of hundred and buy this rather than the D7000. There are only a few differences, and unless your a professional photographer, its going to take a year to learn to use this as it is. The the quality is unreal, colors are rich, I just can't say enough about this camera. It came w a 18-55mm lens. Another great lens. It truly is a great camera, BUT I bought two manuals, have had it for 6 months (but only really started using it the last 3) and I still don't know everything. If your just a weekend warrior and photos are for yourself, save money and get the D3100. If you want professional quality photos, and a camera that has so many whistles and bells (it takes a while to learn) this is it! A camera that will last for years. I do recommend buying a skin for the camera.

I am very happy that I have purchased this camera.I bought both the body and 18 to 55 mm Lens.The photo quality is super!! Even in low lighting environment. Have not had time to explore more features.Afterward, I did more research and found out that I could have just bought a body and buy a 18 - 300mm or 200mm lens.It seems to be the trend to have one lens for all situations rather than carry two lens.Overall, I am very satisfied.

I am yet to give a detailed review but so far this has been much better than D3100 as it gives you more flexibility and the swivel screen lets you click pictures in places where it is crowded and you need to click one.

Wow got this camera 2 days ago and have been loving it every sence. This is my first DSLR so I don't know much about how to use it but it was fairly easy to take out of the box and just use the many Auto settings which turn out some beautiful pics. Can't wait to learn everything I can about this camera and having fun along the way. It got here 2 days eariler than predicted. So I must say thank you Amazon for being a great place to shop and Thank you Nikon for making a wonderful camera.Lens fever is setting in now. :)The only thing I am not unbelievable happy about is the manual. People have recommended Nikon D5100 for dummies instead so that is next.

First off, I bought this to replace my Sony A-100. To compare the two would be completely unfair. Suffice it to say that I am now a Nikon man.Our choice was between the Canon T3i and the Nikon D5100. After reading countless reviews I cam to the conclusion that either camera was a good choice, but the Nikon has better image quality and low light performance.I am amazed at the photos this produces. I shot a quick pic of my dog under kitchen florecent lights without a flash (ISO2000) and the picture looked fantastic. Don't get all starry eyes on mega-pixel numbers. The Canon does have more pixels, but this camera has a larger sensor meaning each pixel can gather more light.I have also been pleased with it's ease of use. My wonderful wife has had nothing but point-and-shoots but is already up and running on Auto, A and S mode. Also, in the easo of use catagory, I love the fact that is I don't know what a function is or does I can press the "?" button and get a brief explanation there in the camera.The Canon does have more options for shooting video, but in the side by side comparisons I saw the Nikon produced better video, especially in low light.Did it mention it does HDR in camera?I was not disappointed by this camera, and recommend it.

I had mine for 2 months and I really liked it. It has been in repair for 3 months. Randomly started taking all black pictures. Nikon does not supply any response to my request for status updates. I have never regretted a purchase more than this. The lack of communication from repair and support is what really frustrates me. Hope others have better luck.Update:I have had the camera out of repair now for about a year and it is fantastic. I must have just got a bad one. Have had 0 issues since the initial repair. Update from 2 to 4 stars.

I read too many reviews and this camera was rated as excellent. Unfortunately, it was too small for my hands. And I don't have the hands of a lumberjack either. I planned to buy a battery grip but the depth of the camera was a problem along with its height. I highly recommend holding the D5100 before making your purchase.

My first "good" camera was a Nikon N60 with various lenses. Taking multiple shots of a subject got tedious, being not able to review the pictures till they were developed. Switched to a Canon S5 IS( a wonderful camera) that took fantastic pictures for a point and shoot. Also with it being digital allowed me to easily use digital programs to fix shots, or be more artistic. Then I foolishly went to a Canon SX30IS which took lousy pictures of anything other than extreme telephoto. I quit taking pictures because of it. I decided to check out digital SLRs and found the D5100, it has impressive specs, and now I own one, it has impressive performance. It has let me fall in love with taking photos again. I didn't rate it for video, having not used that yet. I'd say it would be a good camera for a beginner digital SLR user who really wants to learn, but will still be able to make good shots using the auto functions till more is learned.

Let me start by saying this is my first DSLR camera that I've purchased. I work in the fashion industry and I know a good image is a combination of a good camera, setting and subject. This has changed how I take pictures and I love the result. It's very easy to use. I am slowly playing now with the manual mode and I can not wait to shoot when I figure out what all the proper settings are. On auto mode, you ill still get a great result. If you are thinking of getting a new camera that can take great pics, I would suggest the Nikon D5100.

I bought this camera as an upgrade from my D5000 and I would have to say I'm pretty pleased so far. I really like the more compact body and the greatly improved LCD. I'm shooting with the Nikkor 16-85mm lens and the shots look excellent. At the default settings the jpegs are kinda soft, but if you shoot in RAW you can sharpen them up in ViewNX and they come out looking excellent. The button placement is a bit strange but it is nice that you can now access most of the buttons with your right hand.The first body I received had focusing issues, but Amazon provided excellent customer service and sent me out a new one right away.
