Let's be honest...you want a camera that responds to you and captures the pixels the first time around. As long as you get those pixels, you can get the image you want out of the digital negative. There are few things you get better with more expensive models, including more rapid focus and metering...and if you're in that kind of situation, far be it from me to criticize, you're making use of that kind of equipment. But this is a really good camera. Even factory refurbished, it's a great piece of hardware (though a refurb is better for the entry-level hobbyist). First of all, it shoots in a raw format (for the noobs, that means whatever the sensor sees, it stores...no compression or loss). Nikon produces very consistent optics, so I'd recommend getting Photoshop or at least Photoshop elements (or any Adobe product which gives you Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw) so you can apply the optical compensation.I sold my video camera to buy this model because it handles video in hi-def for casual shooting. You'll need to shoot in ten minutes at a time (that's how the file system works) or plug into a computer for long-duration capture, but you will get what you want. This is also a model with a long history, and replacement parts are still easy to find, so repairs are not impossible. I'm a DIY guy with the right tools and measuring devices, so when my warranty runs out, I can fix this.If you're a noob looking for a starter camera, or a pro looking for a camera that you can take into hazardous conditions (there are off-the-shelf diving shells for this sucker) then this is a great piece of hardware. It's on par with the Canon Eos Rebel T3i...but costs less. One quirk...it knows more about the optics than you do, but has a hard time giving you information. Sometimes it'll cycle past sharp focus if you're too close to an object for your lens. It's a conflict in the software. Just back up, adjust the zoom in a bit, and try again.

This is my second Nikon DSLR (I had a D50 for almost 8 years), and I'm writing this review after about two months of playing around with the camera. I'm a fairly fluent photographer (I had my own darkroom for a while), but I wouldn't say I'm an expert. Like most people, I take 80% of my pics in Auto mode, but I like to sometimes work in manual mode and compose some good shots. Here's my initial impression:Things I like:- Having HD video with sound feels like a miracle. The image quality is excellent, the sound not so much. I bought an external mic, but it really didn't help much. Advice here welcome!- The kit lens and new sensor technology create very crisp, clean and bright images with a lot of depth. I'd say the images are notably cleaner (less noise) and brighter (better contrast control and metering) than my old D50. But the difference isn't massive, and remember the D50 had only a 6MP sensor- Color and overall balance is excellent- The controls and swivel screen are much, much better than I'm used to. They really help make you a better photographerThings I'm getting used to:- The auto focus settings are confusing and often seem to track to the wrong object in a frame. It's hard to compose a shot and establish strong depth of field without going into manual mode (but this could be user error)- The pre-programmed settings for different shooting conditions haven't made a big impression so far. Easier to create your own shot- The in-camera HDR setting has a subtle but good effect, especially useful in bringing out skies in landscapes- The form factor of the camera is great. So far, so good. One other comment - I'm expecting this will be the last DSLR I will ever buy, and not because this is the camera that will meet all my future needs. The D5100 is pretty bulky - too bulky really - and the next-generation of mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses and much smaller form-factors will be the way to go.

i have been shooting with slr's for 37 years owning several. the 5100 is a typical nikon which is good. even the kit lens if quite good. excellent picture quality producing vivid, crystal clear, sharp pics. way more pixels than you will ever need even for aggressive cropping. color and exposure are easily set. this camera does very well in low light even with the relatively slow kit lenses. i have the 55-200mm as well as the 18-55.my only complaint is with the auto focus, it is not very fast and has trouble shooting through windows and screens, hunts in many situations. i called nikon and the woman told me it sometimes takes "a few tries" to focus correctly which is unacceptable. it is better if i don't try to shoot at 18 or 55mm, each end of the zoom. it doesn't compare with the AF snappiness of my minolta 5d which has never had a problem with AF. the nikon also has no focus motor in the body so you have to pay a premium for the afs lenses, each one having it's own motor. it also lacks the in body anti shake but instead the anti shake is in the lens, so you pay for it in each lens. i haven't shot enough video to even comment. all in all a great camera but i have had to use it in manual mode because the AF issues. it can be faster to just switch to manual rather than wait for the camera to figure out what to focus on. i have had way more useable photos with this camera than my minolta and i think the photo quality is a little better. the nikon feels plasticy though, kind of cheaply built.i can't figure out the prices though, the two lens kit is $45 less than the one lens kit and my kit was $270 less than the current price around christmas.

So this camera is just amazing at giving you great resolution and dynamic range. The 18-55mm lens that comes with it is sharper than the 18-70mm and 18-200mm. Pictures are usable up to 1600 ISO. The controls are fairly decent though in some modes not all options are available, such as shooting in HDR requires you to choose certain configurations that I can't even remember what they are. I tried looking up on google to see why HDR was greyed out but their suggestions didn't help. Not that I care about HDR that much but it's frustrating when you can't choose it when you need it. The white balance is another issue. You cannot always choose customized white balance. Again it depends on the settings you choose and this too is something I have no idea what settings would make it work. I never had this problem with Canon DSLR's. I'll say that for everything else the D5100 is miles beyond anything Canon has in the same price range. In fact this camera is superior to the D90 that I used to covet so much. This model is the real sweet spot between all of the models from D3000-D5300. I mean 16mp is enough of a hassle without going to 24mp. This megapixel race is ridiculous. If only there were options for 6-8mp NEFs. This is a superior camera than the two successors and can be had very inexpensive. If you need a longer lens I'd suggest the 18-105mm instead of buying the 55-200mm as an add on. Even with the 18-55mm you can simply crop to zoom in as it'll be as sharp as anything. If all you care about is image quality choose your DSLR in this order: D5100, D3000, D3100, and ignore the rest.

I had a d50 for a long time, and felt it was time to upgrade. This performs as well as that with a lot more speed. Side by side photos on the screen look the same (d50 is 6.0 megapixel). Printed there is probably a difference. However, this camera is much faster in burst mode and also shoots video, which is why I got it. What I miss is the internal motor for AF on older lenses, but I can handle focusing manually. Non AF-S lenses are (mostly) still compatible, which is why I like Nikon. I don't have any complaints, it just wasn't the step up from the D50 that I had imagined. Video quality is OK, I wish I could get 60 FPS on the highest resolution. I've had it for nearly two years and it still functions perfectly and I have even dropped it once (the lens also still functions perfectly but the plastic casing didn't survive.) Recommended if you want a good camera that gives you a great auto mode and also full manual controls, but to be honest, the smaller camera systems are starting to go down in price and the size of those is very attractive, and the sensor is the same size, such as the samsung nx300. If I was buying today, I'd go that route.

The D5100 was my first DSLR camera, when I purchased a used D5100 body on ebay January 2013. I wasn't willing to buy the D5200 and it's 24 mp sensor, because the difference is only apparent in large prints. In summary, the D5100 has superior image quality and low-noise at high iso (upwards to 1,000 iso) low light situations, a good button layout, and a video mode that leaves the user wanting more.Features at glance: - 3-inch LCD swivel screen - 16.2MP (same sensor as D7000) - In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range) - Full HD 1920 x 1080p at 30fps - ISO Sensitivity: 100-6400 (Extended Mode: 100-25600)PROS+ Stunning image quality - very crisp and sharp+ Easy to navigate through menu+ Good, intuitive button layout. I prefer Nikon's entry level DSLR layout to Canon's, with Nikon's placement of the thumb dial and cursor pad.+ Lightweight+ In camera HDR+ Very good performance at high iso and low light situationsCONS+ lack of Nikon branded accessories - no Nikon brand battery grip or LCD cover+ Decent video mode - not fully manual like Canon's entry level Rebel series. The only mode that gives you control is aperture priorityThe D5100 has an excellent sensor in a small form entry level body. If you don't need the extra buttons, LCD screen, weather-sealed body, the D5100 is a great place to start digital photography or as a lightweight backup to pros.Word of caution: as you learn more about digital photography with the D5100, you may find yourself outgrowing the entry level body rather quickly. 6 months later I downgraded the sensor and bought a pro-grade body with the D200. The pro-grade body's rugged build and plethora of buttons are very useful as your skills develop.

I have always owned Nikon cameras. My last one is a 20/20 bought in the late 80's that I still have. I have been waiting on a digital SLR at a good price point and this one came along. I have used this camera for a number of trips and I have to say I am NOT disappointed in the level of detail in the pictures. Sometimes, it hangs up and I can't take a picture so I have to switch to manual mode but honestly, I LOVE my new Nikon. I also use my old telescopic lens from my 20/20 and it will work with this camera - definitely have to go into manual mode to use but there are NO problems with the pictures or the detail. If there are any bad pictures, it's due to the person behind the lens snapping the pics. I have to say that I LOVE digi because I can take picture after picture and delete as many as I want and still GET GREAT SHOTS, even the motion shots come out great! WOW! is all I can say. I'm an amateur only. But if you have any interest in seeing any shots, let me know.

I bought this camera as a back-up to my D7000. It is much lighter/compact, which is great when i want to use the camera for personal use/family outings. I both love and hate that the display screen folds out- its great for live view when i do high angle shots (i'm super short, so i have to hold it above my head) and I can still see what i'm taking a photo of. what i hate about this screen is that its either out/open to the side, or closed and you cant see it. i wish it could flip around and so you can still see the display while its flat against the camera. I have worries that it will get hit at a rowdy wedding and break right off. besides that I love this camera so far! Also love that I got two lenses with this bundle, mine even came with a lens hood which was nice.

All images are generally overexposed, whether in full auto mode or in manual modes using the meter. I am losing color depth and nearly every image is requiring editing. The only exceptions are some of my daughter's portraits. She likes the 60s dusty look. I'm trying to research whether or not there is a global adjustment for exposure to resolve the problem. All else is great. The controls are intuitive, the lenses are pretty good for a starter kit. The vibration reduction, auto focus and other helps make it easy to get great photos. If only I could get rich, balanced color and light.

I like: getting back to SLR-style shooting. The camera's quick focusing. Stunning shots even in the sneered-at, unloved DX format. The articulating screen was 50% of why I went with this model.Don't like: the overall feel that I'm only using a point'n'shoot on steroids. The pop-up onboard flash: why oh why is it on an SLR? If I want a flash I'll mount one; too often it pops up when I don't want it and casts shadows when I use a long lens. For an entry-level Nikon, my first, I am happy.

This is my second D5100...one gets both ends of the Nikon's quality products. I don't go so much for more electronic features in a camera which main purpose is to take beautiful memorable still pictures. The only observable action is that I think I got a "new", really new item! The focal ring is tight to adjustment, which means it has not been mishandled. unlike when it is loose which would indicate it has been manipulated endlessly. My criteria are speed(focusing), clarity, and precision. Speed of focusing is amazing in auto mode. I shoot animals (birds), people, I like to take those unpredictable moments and scenes. I take pictures from inside my car while in motion(don't do it) to catch fleeting moments lost in time as one drives by. Maybe D5200 is speedier...I don't know, I got to buy it first.

This camera really is great. I am writing this after using a Nikon D3100, Nikon D5200, and Canon Rebel T3i.There is a huge gap between the D5000 and D5100, but very little between the D5100 and D5200 or D5300.The D5100 feels like it has a better grip than the other two because they are a little smaller.I use this camera to take long exposure star pictures, and while it doesnt compare to the D600 or D4, it still has relatively low noise for how cheap it is. I found there was even more noise in the D5200.The articulating back screen is probably the best thing about this camera compared to the D3100 or D3200. You think you wont need it, but when you have it, you wont know how you lived without it.If you're looking for a camera for the budding photographer, go with this camera or the D5300 if you have the money. The D3100 and D3200 are full of megapixels, but that wont matter if you cant take a good picture first. The lenses are the most important thing when it comes to photography.

As other reviewers have noted the camera worked fine for a while, then started producing black images. Took it in for "repair". It worked again for a couple days, then the problem resurfaced. Its been 'reset' so many times now that it doesn't work at all. I am HIGHLY PISSED. I spent so much money on this camera and cannot take a basic picture and cannot rely on it working from one minute to the next. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT.

I got this camera in December 2012 so I've had it for almost a year now. I started out with a point and shoot, A canon powershot sx230. So of course this was a big step up. But I played with other cameras and made my decision after a lot of reading etc. I love this camera, for what it is and the price. I haven't had any issues with it yet. You get the same sensor as the more expensive D7000, just a cheaper body. I got a few months ago the Nikkor AF-S50mm 1.8G. I don't even use the kit lens that it came with anymore really, except for some wider shots of a room or something. The Glass is what makes the difference! If you're a beginner and deciding between this and the D7000 or one of the more expensive ones. I say get this, save your money and buy a better lens because that is the big difference in image quality. I'm saving up for more lenses and then will get a new body in a few years when needed but invest in glass is what I have to say! Overall, I have to just say this is a great camera and I would highly recommend it.(Also make sure to get Adobe Lightroom for your photos.)

I would recommend this camera to any beginner out there looking to go from a point and shoot to an SLR camera. The packaging was damaged but the actual box the equipment came in wasn't. It almost can't take a bad picture! I have renewed my love of photography with the Nikon D5100 from when I used a completely manual Pentax 35mm in high school when the Manual setting was all you had; setting your own f-stop, shutter speed, flash distance, etc. This camera does it all, but I prefer to use either A, S or flat out M to get the shot I want. The kit lens is pretty standard but excellent. Great for those kids or pet shots around the house, snap shots of family and events. Found this on Amazon on a Christmas sale for $75 less than the D3100 that I had my eye on at Best Buy. (That's a $250 price reductions!!) Merry Christmas to me!!

Loved the size and light weight but the autofocus became a huge issue for me over time. Missed too many good shots just because the darn thing would not find focus in time, especially in darker setting ie indoors and at night. The quality of the pictures was okay but I finally realized this camera is just underpowered for my needs (can't really think anybody but total amateur could be happy with it). The live shooting mode is next to useless because of how long it takes to focus and how unreliable the focus is int this mode (this is still a huge issue for most DSLRs). Was happy to advance to a D600, although even this camera could use the more advanced autofocus of the D800 ie 51 points instead of the 39 points it has (silly of Nikon to have purposefully undermined its functionality that way). Can't really recommend this camera to anyone except somebody who can't afford any better or needs the portability above all other considerations.

Originally - loved this camera. For the price, this was an amazing deal. I bought this camera used, and new they go for about $900. I got this for half price here, and was so excited to own this camera, however I never heard about the shutter issues. My daughter and I both have had the same problem, but she had a warranty on hers and was able to ship it back to be fixed.Image quality - amazing. Speed and response - phenomenal. Ease of use and ability to jump right in to this camera (using manual settings) delightfully easy.I LOVE LOVE LOVE this camera - in every way, except for one issue - that is widely known - Nikon D5100 are known for shutter problems, and mine experienced it after only about 2000 images. I am a amateur, attempting to turn pro and this hit me hard. This is a $250 fix, with no guarantee that it will not re-occur.All in all, Nikon makes a glorious product, and you won't be disappointed -- however, make sure that you buy new (so that you know the background of the body) and you have a full warranty that you keep up so that you are not left out in the cold or out $250.

Let me start by saying: I have no training whatsoever in photography. I purchased this camera solely to take pictures of my children. I was so tired of missing moments with my Nikon point and shoot. I debated between this camera and the Sony NEX5 for a long time. The size of the Sony was much more appealing, and I still question my decision because of that factor. I went with the Nikon because my husband has an older (very heavy) Nikon DSLR and he has several lenses that would be compatible with this camera. So far, I've only used the kit lens and I've been very happy with it. I also think that the viewfinder on this camera allows me to take better pictures than I could take with the Sony, which does not have a viewfinder. I have managed to capture some amazing pictures of my kids. I bought a small case so that the camera will fit in my diaper bag. The camera is very responsive and has some great settings for someone like me that has no background in photography. It was easy to pick up and use immediately out of the box.

I have been purchasing Nikon SLR's for the past 8-10 years and I have never been disappointed. I love the movable display on the rear of the camera and thats one of the main reasons I chose this as opposed to the 3100 or 3200. The price for what you are getting is superb. I still have a Nikon D40 from 5 years ago that is functioning well so I am definitely sold on Nikon quality. When I look at my pictures they are crisp with vibrant colors. This camera feels good in the hand and will not disappoint you! Its a great deal, so buy them while they are in stock!

Got this for quite a good price for a new Nikon. Standard lens so I will buy a better lens with the money I saved. Then as I get better at my photography I will upgrade the body and have quality lenses to use with it.

I needed a camera that would take good pictures for a book of my paintings. This camera worked out great. I knew little about how to use a dslr -most experience in 35mm slr. I purchased a book and learned how to use the many features..but mainly wanted to get the most true reproductions I could to represent my work in print. I ended up shooting most of them in the shade at about 10 in the morning and they turned out great. The live view really helped getting them right. I am sure there are better cameras out there and this one has been replaced but I'm hanging on to mine. All the photos in this book were taken with this camera.[...]

This really proved to be a great choice, over Canon. It's everything I expected it to be. So many functions. I'm getting a lot of use out of it. Recommend to everyone.

Delivered as promised and, while packaged funny, seemed to be what was advertised. I've used it a couple of times and it has performed as expected. It's a gamble you take any time you purchase gear that doesn't come right out of the Nikon box.

I got this camera, after having a Panasonic fz 150. That was a good camera, but I wanted to get one where I could change the lenses. This good for me and I love it. I have gotten some good photos with this camera and I have shoot some videos with it as well. If you want to make short films with this, you can. Go ahead and buy it.
