I travel a lot and mostly use my camera for travel photography. I started with the wonderful D40, so I lean towards Nikon since I'm familiar with the menus and controls. I have tried these cameras for travel:Canon G12 (401 grams) and S95 (190 grams) (very good but not wonderful picture quality bc of small sensor, very light and easy to carry);Nikon D7000 and D700 (964 grams w/ kit 18-55 zoom)(unbelievable picture quality but to heavy to carry for 6-8 hours of walking);Fuji X100 (440 grams)(great picture quality, very light but lens is fixed; andiPhone 4S (140 grams) (easiest to carry, fixed lens, but good picture quality under most conditions). At over 750 grams, the D5100 with 18-55 kit lens is heavier than most of these options and is almost too heavy to carry 6-8 hours. The padded Crumpler strap really helps, and I don't load up with any accessories (no extra lens, no flash, no extra battery, etc.). The quality, range and lightweight of the kit zoom is really what clinches this for me. The Fuji is amazing, but I find there are too many shots I miss because of the fixed lens. Plus, if I want to go super light and fixed lens, my iPhone is not a bad option.

I bought this camera as an upgrade from my (still awesome) Nikon D50. Overall the camera is just what I would expect, an incremental improvement over my 6-year old body. However I do have a couple of very critical marks for it:1. Nikon removed the AF servo. Now all of my "AF" lenses are "MF". Shame on me for buying it, but the next body up with modern features and the AF servo is $550 more and I don't know that Nikon will keep the AF servo in for the next generation. This leads me to believe I should be investing in new glass.2. Extremely cramped body grip. My hand is cramping up holding the grip as they have removed the extremely useful mini-lcd on the top. This means my hand wraps around too far and it is hard to hold on to the camera. The body is also not as tall as it used to be, again making it hard to grip. I have larger than average hands, but the D50's grip is why I went Nikon over Canon 6 years ago.3. Lack of mini-lcd on the top. Now I only have a back-lit display for reading camera settings which is not good at night when trying to preserve your vision.

Previous Nikon Coolpix cameras such as their 8800 & 8400,8 meg cameras (5 years ago) really gave me such options and picture quality I never thought I would need to invest into a DSLR. However, recent "ProCam" purchases including the Nikon P100 and Sony DXC-HX9 or the earlier HX5 while having some rather cool options, really no longer had as good quality images. Their backgrounds were watercolor washy and well...just weren't as professional as they should have been with the growth in digital imagery. In addition, features have been eliminated on the "ProCam's" such as hot-shoe flash, ability to use filters, RAW or Extra-high JPEG file saving to name a few .Purchased the D5100 with 18mm -55mm and the 55mm to 300mm. Wow, just what I was looking for. Sharp and explicit detail and low, low noise infraction at higher ISO. Shooting at 1600 and totally amazed at the quality. I'm not going to pick it apart for there are many other long reviews to read here and else where.Just to mention a few of the items I'm so glad to have back by going to a DSLR at this time. BIG LIKE is the fully swivel LCD screen in all directions, hot shoe, filters, RAW and TTL flash (Nikon SB-800) a rather light & small footprint in my camera bag. Extremely high useable ISO settings, the ability to use a wireless remote or wired remote shutter release. Manual focus, just for those time when the low light and it just searches constantly for something to focus on. HD video is great also..Get one and adapt to loving it. :)

Had camera five months. Camera works fine.Dropped the thing. It was in a heavy camera bag and not dropped far-a foot or two at most...no big deal for any 35mm film SLR and should be no big thing for this expensive camera. Probably got no more than a gentle nudge. But it is completely inoperable now....get an error message and nothing I do changes it. NO APPARENT DAMAGE AND NO REAL FORCE EXERTED ON THE CAMERA IN "THE DROP".The thing is too fragile. So I search on the Internet and find many people commenting on this "I dropped my camera (same make and model and it won't work."....and they are talking about the same thing....not dropped on a street or sidewalk...not even dropped by itself...dropped in a nice big thick nicely padded carry bag....and poof it's broken. Now searching around how to get it fixed. Camera is inoperable. Good thing I'm not on an expensive vacation. I'd be out of luck photography wise.So.....if the camera cannot survive what amounts to normal wear and tear.....normal bumps and jolts...without locking up and refusing to operate....what does it matter how good it is otherwise? In engineering parlance....the camera is not "robust" enough. Plastic housing? Maybe. Lots of fancy features, screens that turn inside out...sure.....HD video...yah...but drop the carry bag a few feet and the thing stops working? Not good. Not acceptable. After I find out it can't be repaired or that I'm liable for cost of repair I'm likely to decide that this brand is no longer the "exclusive" high quality, high status brand it once was. Now it's a mass marketed popular consumer good sold in the millions that is trading on the former value of the name. It's a shame considering how robust the old cameras of this brand used to be....take a lot of REAL abuse...not some little nothing drop in a padded bag...and keep working.Very likely I'll toss it and switch to another brand that offers reliability along with NECESSARY features. My esteem for this brand is irreparably damaged.

I own this camera for about 1 month and its great! Easy to use, and with lots of features to play with. You can't ask more for that price, and its got the same sensor as the D7000.The grip is soft and well fitted to your hand. Its a little small, but you can get a battery grip at amazon for a low price. The battery life is excellent, i suggest you pick up another one if you are a travel photographer.this camera its absolutely what i needed for...i hope to get another model in a few years.

...bought this camera about 25 days ago. So far I am impressed. This was my first DSLR. My other cameras are a Canon G12 and a Canon 310hs. The Nikon D5100 is a decent camera, and being a somewhat novice I have learned the suttle nuances of using the various Modes, Scenes and Effects. If you are a new buyer, read a few books on the D5100 first and plan your purchase. Learn all that you can about fast prime lenses, (1.4 and 1.8 35 and 55mm) zoom lenses (18-200mm and 18-300mm) and the kit lenses sold with the camera. For the money you can't go wrong with the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens purchased with the D5100. But do your homework, and read tons reviews and decide for yourself. You may end up buying a kit lens that you may not need. The 3 lens trilogy may work for you, or you may just need 1 or 2 lenses depending.

This camera is great! I'm always on a budget and this one fits the bill perfectly. I loved my D40x, but unfortunately, it's seen it's time and I had to get a replacement. This is a great entry-level DSLR. Very affordable which gives me more spending money on lenses. I'm not a professional photographer, this is just a very passionate hobby of mine, so this DLSR fits my needs perfectly in affordability and function. There are tons of reviews of this camera on Youtube. I definitely recommend checking those out as it's nice to see a video of it in action.

I have had the Nikon D5100 for 1 month now, I have never owned a DSLR camera before this one (only the 8 MP camera on my smartphone), and I was blown away with the quality and ease of use that you get from this camera. I read over the manual several times before using all of the features that are baked into it, and now I have a excellent grasp on how to manipulate every aspect of the D5100. I could not have been more pleased with anything else for the price and quality of this camera, it was honestly the best $649 dollars I have ever spent. I plan on buying s second unit and converting it specifically for IR photography, more so I can capture crisp IR images, I must say that this camera takes very nice IR photographs just not at normal frame rates that you are accustom to with visible light photography. If you are at all hesitant on purchasing this because you feel it might be to much camera for you, you should reconsider. This will take the best family portraits, crispest action shots, and the quality of shots at night are mind boggling once you understand how ISO works. Get IT!!!!

A former Nikon 35mm camera user, I had bought a Canon Rebel when I decided to go digital several years ago. I have never been totally happy with my Canon, and when I read the reviews on the D5100, decided I wanted one. This camera is awesome! I have so much more creative control over my shooting. The Nikon is much more light sensitive than my old Canon... and I love the folding viewing screen! Every time I use the camera, I discover new reasons to love it.

Out of the box, I was having a lot of problems with the camera recognizing my Sandisk Extreme Pro SD cards. I could take three or four photos and then the camera would give me a 'No SD card inserted' message and stop working. This happened several times and I actually started packing everything up to return it. I'm glad that I went to Nikon's website first and found the firmware update...The update is easy to perform and completely takes care of the issue. In the SETUP MENU of your camera, scroll all the way down to FIRMWARE VERSION. If your camera reads 1.00 on the A and B lines, you'll want to perform the update. With the firmware issue out of the way, I am really happy with the performance of this camera. The photo quality is nothing short of outstanding. The D5100 performs very well in low light situations and also has a high dynamic range to handle difficult high contrast situations.Additional note: A nice "bonus" feature is that this camera can use old manual focus lenses - even the non-AI models. They can only be used in Manual exposure mode. You will have to use an external meter to calculate exposure (or use the histogram information in the photo playback to check exposure). If you don't mind using classic, old-school photography technique, lenses like the 50mm f1.4 and 55mm micro Nikkor can acquired at very low cost. They can produce outstanding results with this camera using the "Rangefinder" mode to help indicate when your subject is in focus. You will need to make sure that the lens that you want will not interfere with the mirror in the camera - this caveat would mostly apply to older fish-eye and specialty lenses that were designed to use with the mirror locked-up in the older film cameras of the day.

If you're truly serious about buying an SLR camera, then I assume you've already done your homework and read these reviews. So, there's really only one more thing I can add to these reviews, especially as a beginner in photography: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?! This camera is AWESOME. Quit reading about it and just buy it already!! It is every bit as good as everyone says it is. JUST. DO. IT.

I've always been a Nikon fan and use a D3X myself. I purchased the camera for my daughter as a good introductory camera with an excellent reputation with good build and excellent performance. I would have scored the camera 4 stars, unfortunately its not value for money at all when purchased from Amazon. While the camera is great unfortunately AMAZON is a complete CON! Bitterly disappointed that I was charged $84.95 for delivery when I paid online and I've just been informed that the recipient also got STUNG a further $100 for delivery at the other end for the GIFT that I had sent them. So we paid OVER $200 for delivery for a camera that in theory costs only $646. Somewhere someone is ripping us off and I am bitterly disappointed with AMAZON. Next time I'm going to AVOID AMAZON SUPER SAVER DEALS and go down to the local market instead and save some myself some money. The $646 camera ended up costing us almost $1,000 definitely a con and definitely not value for money.Sorry Amazon but you've just lost a customer.

Ordered through B&H Photo. Also ordered video cam through them. Camera arrived in excellent shape, but one day late. Nobody's perfect. Biggest concern: camera won't take sd card. Only sd xc. Don't know the difference. Will have to spring for one and let you know. Those are the main reasons I only gave it a four. B&H Photo has been an excellent source for online purchase and delivery. As long as you don't plan on buying books or toys. The company mainly sells cameras, video computers and electronics.

You have to purchase a protective cover BUT not for this camera. Was kinda shocked it was so small. for girly hands that I don't have. That's why I bout the extra battery grip.

For the last year or so I have been pushing my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 to the max. I just wasn't achieving the level of quality and professionalism I needed. I knew it was not possible as long as I skirted the world of the dSLR for fear of the price tag and all that. But when I had the chance, I took the plunge into that tantalizingly beautiful world, and I have not looked back.Except when my 18-55mm lens doesn't zoom in as close as was used to with my Lumix. ;) But the depth of field, high quality, manual options, and wonderful speed of my d5100 more than make up for that. I'll just get a bigger lens some day. Also, a note for those of you who may be doing what I did and going back and forth (x1,000,000...) between the 3100 and 5100: If you're coming from the digital point-and-shoot or megazoom world, any dSLR will be better than what you've got! The 3100 is an excellent camera, and you would probably not notice much of a difference between the two*. But if your budget can handle it, I would definitely recommend the 5100. The rotating LCD is wonderful, those extra couple of megapixels are nice, and it is fast. There are some other pluses, but I haven't fully explored them all yet.Well, I think this turned out more like a blog entry than a review, but hopefully someone out there will benefit from it. And that it will encourage the step into dSLR photography.THE END.*This wisdom was imparted to me by a very kind lady in the photography department at my local Best Buy who was not out to sell me the highest-priced camera but rather to find out what I needed and help me find it. I like to give credit where credit's due, so there you have it. ;)

I've owned many Nikon SLRs and one DSLR and had no major problems. Like others I was taking photos and suddenly everything was black. I've read online this is happening to many owners, so it's not as if I got a rare lemon. Camera is 2 months past warranty and I basically have to pay the postage and to see if it can be fixed and then pay for have it fixed. Camera isn't even a year old! I've never dropped or neglected this camera in any way. Happened around photo #271 in a photo shoot with no warning. I'm very upset this has happened.

I just left the world of Point and Shoot digital and had a Panasonic Lumix FZ35. It had the highest frames per second of comparable cameras when I purchased it last year. It also has HD recording capabilities. This Nikon arrived today and with only touching the basics of how to operate, my photos turned out amazing! My main reason for purchasing a DSLR was to take action shots of my daughters during their sports. I've never been so impressed or pleased with a purchase. Every shot was clear, crisp and mid-air shots were perfect. I could easily blow these up to poster sized with fantastic results.I researched for days and narrowed my choice down to the Nikon D3100, D5100 and the Sony A55. The Sony had the highest frames per second (10), but it wasn't reviewed as highly as the Nikons for overall camera and photo quality. The D5100 has a good size, easy to use controls, the neatest feature is the photo selection piece where you can snap a photo and the camera picks out the dominant color and makes everything else black and white.I was new to the DSLR and interchangeable lenses and overwhelmed. I ordered the 18-55mm lens and wasn't sure how close or how far I could get good shots. I'm able to get pretty close up, but I will definitely upgrade to the 50-200mm or 50-300mm lens for my kids' running and swimming events. Another notable difference from point and shoot cameras is that you manually adjust how close or how far you want the lens zoom to be. No auto zoom on this camera. The auto focus is amazing and leaps and bounds over point and shoot at the speed I was shooting in Sports Mode.

I had a difficult time deciding between Nikon and Canon. I own three Canons so I felt a little disloyal buying a Nikon, but comparing test photos I found here and elsewhere, Nikon seemed to win. I'm new to DSLR so I can't comment on manual features and wow you with lots of photography jargon I have yet to learn. I just wanted a camera that took beatiful photos! My old Canon PowerShot G2 takes great photos too, except indoors, but at 4 MP, it was definitely time to upgrade!I like the feel of the camera. It's not too heavy to carry around but not cheap and plasticky feeling either. Some of the less exepensive DSLR's have that cheapy feeling, so I decided to spend more to hopefully get better quality and I'm not disappointed. Even with a heavy lense it remains balanced. I'm sure I'll get used to it but some of the buttons seem to be in less than intuitive locations. I'm still getting used to the menu too. Again coming from Canon, there's a learning curve but I'll get the hang of it.If you're like me and you're tired of the cruddy picture quality point and shoot cameras produce indoors, then this is what you're looking for! Just the auto setting alone produces terrific results over all my other cameras. Once I learn how to manually adjust, I'm sure I'll get even better results. Now I have the ability to zoom in on my kids when they're on stage and not end up with a pixelated blurry mess. Wish I had this when my daughter had dance recitals.I am going to Jamaica next month and I'm going to be putting this puppy to the test. I'll update my review then and hopefully upload some gorgeous photos!

This is a fantastic new offering from Nikon. You get most of the best parts of the D7000 for 1/3 cheaper. If you are looking for a starter camera or a back up body to the D7000 this is it.Here are the major differences between the D5100 and D7000.D5100Exact same sensor and processing abilities as the D7000. Some of the best Image Quality available in any DSLR. ISO 3200 is very usable with low noise.- Swivel screen while the D7000 is fixed -- Since the contrast autofocus (ie Live View) is not very good on either of these cameras this is not really a player unless you are using a tripod. Then the swivel screen is very useful.- 4 fps vs 6 fps for D7000 - No big deal 4 fps is plenty fast to fill your card with similar looking pictures. Also, in RAW D7000 buffers out pretty fast and then slows down anyway.- 11 focus points vs 39 for D7000 - Most of the time not really a big deal. Sometimes all those extra points get in the way and slow you down.No internal auto focus motor while the D7000 has one -- If you don't have any D series or older lenses this is not an issue. If you do, they will not autofocus on this camera.- Only one SD slot vs 2 for the D7000 -- A big difference when getting paid to shoot. Otherwise, always format your cards in your camera and not on the computer. Doing that I have never had a failure. (Jinxed myself now)Not weather sealed vs D7000 partially weather sealed - Don't drop either one in the water and keep both out of dust.- Has less external switches than the D7000 - This means you need to go to the menus more often which slows things down. This can be severely annoying or not depending on your shooting style. The D7000 handles better but this is not a deal breaker on the D5100.Built in flash is not a commander for Nikon Creative Light System while D7000 is -- If you don't use off camera flash or you use radio triggers this is not a big deal.1.2 lbs vs 1.7 lbs for D7000.Overall the D5100 is a great camera. The D7000 have some extra features that make it worth the extra money but if you don't need them you get all the fantastic D7000 IQ for 2/3rd the price.
