I bought this camera mainly because I wanted a camera that was significantly better than my Casio Exilim. Although this option was not advertised, I have enjoyed the option to have auto OR manual focus. I'm definitely not a pro at photography, so I don't know how this camera would measure up to professional standards, but for me, it's been wonderful! It also has a lot of cool built-in filters and options that help make a good photo a great one. Lastly, it's very easy to attach/detach lenses. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone.

I love this camera. It has dealt with a LOT of shooting from me and I have no complains or downtime. A very faithful camera it is. The lens that comes with it is alright, I don't use it really unless for general video, but it's a good lens so no newbie should ever be wondering "What lens should I get?" Use the lens it came with! Anyway, the controls are exactly where I want it to be, nothing is hard to reach. There's tons to say, but all in all, a durable camera that I use for work, freelance work (real estate), fun, etc etc.

My Nikon D50 bit the dust so I choose this model. So far I love it! Very similar to what I was use to.

This is my first "real"camera. What a great value for the $!!!! After spending about 30mins with a friend who is really into it I was able to take some awesome photos at my son's hockey game. It takes a bit to learn, I still am, but well worth it. Great value.

Wife uses this camera daily. Don't be fooled by the need to buy more expensive cameras under the guise of megapixels. This camera has plenty of resolution for great pictures with wide angle or zoom lens'. Works great with the 18-200VRII

I got this one for my birthday. Have been using it for close to a year. No problems at all. The user manual, and the user DVD is very informative. This camera is very good for the money I paid for it. It may not be as good as a D7000 but then, you don't pay as much as you would for a D7000. So considering what I spent on this camera, I feel this one's a great deal. Regarding the features, the few couple of months I found it really hard to understand and transitions between various modes. I read the manual fully, listened to the DVD as well, kept trying and now finally I can say I have a good understanding of the various features the camera offers. So you need to be patient and spend some time to really understand what wonders this camera can do. To sum up, its a Thumbs UP to D5100.

I won't go into details about the merits of the Nikon D5100. Others have described the camera's capabilities in depth and with thought and passion. Simply put, it is an outstanding camera capable of serving the needs of every amateur photographer. Yes, it is that good. The biggest practical difference between the D5100 and the less expensive D3100 is video capability. If you are not interested in HDvideo, the D3100 is a better value. For normal use, it is impossible to tell the difference between an image made with either camera. The D5100 does offer a bit better low light performance. However it will not benefit most amateur users that much, if at all. That said, either Nikon is superior to any Canon DSLR for flash photography. Nikon's iTTL flash system is better at metering and producing properly exposed images than anything Canon offers, regardless of price. In fact, Nikon's TTL system from 20 years ago is better than anything Canon offers today. If you NEVER use flash, Canon is a wonderful choice. Canon cameras offer rich, saturated colors. All my compact digital cameras are made by Canon, including the wonderful S95. I am not a anti-Canon Nikon fan. I do use Nikon SLR film and digital SLR cameras. Many choose to minimize the benefits of the Nikon flash system. Don't choose a camera system without considering it. Nikon makes the best flash system. Period.For those that want to compare the D5100 to the D7000. Don't. The D7000 exceeds the needs of nearly every amateur. Its biggest practical difference for most users is compatibility with Nikon Ais and AF lenses made since 1977. Unless you already own older Nikkor lenses or plan on buying them now, the AFS lenses made today will more than meet your needs. Too many people buy DSLRs for ego. Don't be one of them. Buy a Nikon DSLR that works with your budget and immediately buy a separate flash, such as the capable and inexpensive Nikon SB-400, and learn and enjoy photography. Only you can make good photographs. The camera has very little to do with it. Don't believe anyone that tells you otherwise. Professionals have far different needs than you and me. I have a Nikon D200, a Nikon 8008, and a Nikkormat FTn. I have been using an slr for 37 years, ever since I was twelve. You will not go wrong with the D3100 or the D5100. And remember, only buy a Nikon flash.

it cannot be better. I strongly recommend this camera. I am using it with the basic lens (18-55) and my pics seems to be professional. IT IS AMAZING!!!

This camera is awesome. I use it mostly for capturing my kids sporting events. I love the continuous shooting mode and it produces very clear pictures we can print later. I really have no complaints with it.

Great camera! Package came as described and on time. I'm new to photography so I'm still learning how to use it. But for a beginner I was able to take some beautiful shots and plan on taking more.

I bought this camera for my dad and he seems to really enjoy it. It is a good camera for someone who might not be able to afford professional equipment but still want quality

The camera at this price ($469) is a steal. I would advice anyone to get the body only and purchase the Nikkor 35mm 1.8G prime lens. I am a beginner and i discovered my passion for photography with is camera.

Great camera great price!! Have only had the camera 2 months but I can't find anything I do not like. Love how it will take 3 pics a sec repeatedly. The quality of the pics is stunning. Camera is very light weight but feels well built. The lens is where all the weight is.

It was a gift for my daughter and she loves it. Easy to use and so many options. She's only had it a week but looks forward to using it for a long time.

This camera has done everything I've needed it to do and more. Very sturdy, very durable, very practical to carry and transport. Photos are clear, with plenty of features for everyone - from the beginning photographer to the experienced artist. Excellent value for the price, and you've got to love Nikon's quality and reliability. The battery lasts a considerable amount of time, but it's always good to have a spare - especially if you love to snap as many pictures as I do.

Works great. Easy to understand instruction manual in which one can find things quickly. Nothing too fancy to make it hard to use. Takes great photos also, so I am happy with it.

Fantastic camera and my son who I purchased it for absolutely loves it! A ton of features he'll probably never ever realize how to use but, that's up to him!

Hi, I have waited a long long time to jump from my Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom to my first DSLR, like every budget oriented consumer out there, I did a lot of research, I could have gone for the Nikon D3200 24.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR NIKKOR Zoom Lens (Black), but didn't like the fixed display, then there was the new Nikon D5200 24.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera Body Only (Black), but you had to pay a premium for basically the same camera with bumped megapixels and the D7000's autofocus system. I got my D5100 refurbished for $399, I think that's a great deal for such a great camera. I skipped the kit lens and went for Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras and I highly recommend this combination, It allowed me to take great shots of my kids indoors without a flash, outdoor shots have great bokeh as well.

This is my first DSLR camera. I debated between Nikon D5100 and Canon T3i for a long time, and settled on Nikon because of the way it fits in my hand. It's been a great camera that allows me to do everything I want to try out as a beginner, and I imagine I'll be happy using this for a few years. In addition to the lenses that came with this kit (18-55mm and 55-200mm), I purchased Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G, and I've been happy with the results. With these lenses, I've been able to take excellent (well, in my biased opinion) pictures of pets, people, and close-up of flowers. I can't say anything about landscapes yet, since I haven't had a chance to take it out for a hike yet, but I don't doubt it'll work as great. Only thing with this kit is that the bag is barely big enough to hold the three lenses plus the camera, but I want to buy a waterproof backpack anyway, so that's okay.

I am an amateur photography enthusiast. My first SLR camera was a Nikon FG-20. As far as DSLR go I have also used a Canon T3 prior to this but have decided to get back to my Nikon roots with this purchase.I felt right at home with this camera, menus and settings felt intuitive. For the camera in this price range, it offers anything an aspiring photographer could need. I am a fan of manual focus and the lack of pentaprism was a bit disappointing but again in this price range, Pentax k-30 is the only camera that offers it. The focus indicator provided is adequate though. For better manual focus tuning there is also the live view.If you want to see the camera in action, go to flickr and type D5100 in the search. Click on the D5100 group and search photos taken with this camera, they are very good.Pros:- size- lightweight- great sensor and picture quality- intuitive menus- same great sensor as the D7000 camera.Cons:- Small viewfinder and no focusing prism.Highly recommend this camera to anyone wanting to experience the charms of shooting photos with a DSLR. And the possibilities offered by interchangeable lens system. For the money you will have a hard time beating the picture quality of this camera.

The lens cannot shoot with automatic focus. I have to adjust the focus with every angle and distance change manually. This makes macro either really difficult or not possible at all. Other than that, good shape.

Love the camera. The settings are a little overwhelming at times for beginner. Would recommend an guide to help explain more.

This is a great camera. The auto mode makes anyone look like a professional photographer. Switch to manual mode to get some great shots and use your creativity. Get a few lenses and you will be very happy with this purchase.
