0 stars. I had this camera out of the box for all of 10 minutes and it malfunctioned. I went through the set up like the manual stated, took one picture and the second picture came out completely black with a tiny white squiggle, third and forth pictures were completely black as well, even with different settings. Why does Amazon continue to sell these if it is a recurring problem? I returned and bought a D5200, even though that model appears to have focus issues. Will review when I receive it.I suppose the one star out of five can go towards the Amazon box my camera came in, my cats are having a super fun time playing in it.

i am not a photography expert, but i loveee this camera. Bought as gift for myself, this baby shoots some awesome photos. I have used it on most of my trips to Canyon, Vegas, Disneyworld, Puerto Rico etc. I always get pictures with good color and saturation. Also low light photos come up pretty good without flash (which is awesome!!!). I would say instead of buying D3100 or D3200 go for this camera, its well worth the extra monies. And the camera is not heavy though it looks bulky

I really like it. I have enjoyed playing with it as well as taking serious pictures with it. I have also taken pictures outside in different kinds of weather. It has worked really well. I like having the view finder as well as the led screen. I have enjoyed taking pictures with it.

Have both and I am pleased with both! With the price drop to 429 on the 5100 I could not resist a second camera ! I also got the 35mm and 55 - 200mm lens .......... Best pictures that I have ever taken.These are both great DSLR camera to start out with. I will get to Manual soon, and learn even more. That's the great thing about these cameras, it can ease you into the hobby and make you feel like a professional in a short amount of time .

Got this camera for my wife for Christmas. Nailed it! 10 cameras and we finally found the right one! We are both novice users and still manage to take professional (to me anyway) quality pics with it. For the amateurs out there scared to pull the trigger because you cant decide, you WILL be happy with this camera and you will notice a big improvement over the normal point and shoots you have been using. Don't be intimidated by all the features, it is very intuitive. For the experts out there, you may disagree, but then again you should have stopped reading this review when I said I was a novice.

I was looking for more performance and finally settled on the D5100 as the best balance of price and features. Overall I've been happy - it focuses far more quickly, offers higher ISO (by quite a bit) and is much less grainy in comparable low-light conditions than the camera it replaced.The pivoting screen with Live View (a feature the D3000 does not have) was also a feature I wanted, however I'm mixed on it. No problems yet but I fear for the hinge as it seems like the most fragile part on the camera. I love that you can use Live View and the screen to capture from creative angles (or lose less shots to a bad guess) but find myself regularly debating between the quicker viewfinder option or the LV one. Given that I generally have the screen folded in to protect the LCD more times than not I use the viewfinder then glance down to check out the shot (as I was used to with the D3000) only to see the plastic backing panel. I think time and practice will address that.All in all it's solid - I've yet to play with the "Scene" options or really dig into the manual settings but it's definitely an upgrade from a D3000 (which I was very happy with) and it's been seamless with all my lenses and accessories. If you're new to DSLRs or looking to upgrade this is as solid choice - plus it's basically the same sensor as the D7000 at quite a lower price!

This is my 1st dslr camera. I am very pleased with how easy it was for me to use. I thought I wouldn't be able to figure it out but I did. I love love love the effects mode on this camera! Tons of fun things to do!!! Great purchase! BTW, this camera was cheaper to buy online at amazon.com then any where else!! Trust me, I shopped around and around!

I am a newbie to DSLR as this is my first advance camera i've owned. When coming to Amazon i was very impressed as i got this camera on sale and is very happy with it. So far i have had no hiccups. Thank God for that. Its been about 2 weeks since i've got this camera and with the default lens 18-55mm it works really nice. PIctures are clear and shooting is really nice with the view finder. Low light conditions will occur depending on which mode or setting you on. We chose this camera over the D3200 because of the HD video feature despite the slightly better reviews on the D3200. The difference in price was minimal between the two cameras. We used this on a short trip and, so far, are quite satisfied with what it does. We went to Hearst Castle. They do NOT allow flash photos PERIOD when inside the buildings and we were a little apprehensive about the results of NON flash pictures. We worried for NO reason. The camera compensated EXTREMELY well and we are VERY happy with the results. I took off one star because the camera is not completely intuitive in it's operation. As always, just like in cars, whomever designs these things COMPLETELY understands how they work but isn't necessarily in touch with the rest of us. In its favor, it seems, at this point, that it would be a little more difficult to mess things up - so points FOR this camera. Like everything else, as we become more accustomed to using it, we'll CERTAINLY appreciate its true potential. This is not our first Nikon (we replaced a D50) and likely will not be our last. We think there's enough ability in this camera to satisfy nearly anyone (amatuer to near pro) and it IS a good price. One thing to remember though: Just like a computer, you must tell it what you want it to do before it will do it. Once it knows what you want, it performs very well.UPDATE #1: Just for whatever it's worth, older Nikon DSLR lenses with auto focus may NOT work (as ours didn't). You may want to take this into consideration . . . Perhaps you would want to purchase new basic lenses to go with this camera.UPDATE #2: We have also learned that, as I've read in other reviews on this camera, that the flash is a little weak compared to the D3100, D3200, and our trusty D50. To compensate, we bought another "shorter" lens and it seems to have, mostly, resolved this issue.

This is the second time I have purchased this camera. I liked the first one so much I got another to give as a gift. This camera is easy to start using and it has a huge array of "How To" manuals/books available that are specific to this Nikon model. I believe others have covered all the specs and technical details, GPS and WiFi capabilities were not essential to us. We have dedicated video cameras. Great pictures are why we own this camera. The articulated screen is incredibly useful for overhead shots, ground level shots and everything in between. It allows me to carry a smaller travel tripod and still easily see what I am shooting while standing upright. The D5100 has several cost/buying options that make it affordable. The fact that I have purchased yet another for a loved one is all I can add to this outstanding camera.

I have had the D5100 for well over a year now and it is a great camera and was a big jump in image quality and features over my D50. The images it produces are gorgeous. I bought a d200, which in its time was a great camera, on ebay recently and compared shots from it, a semi pro model, to the 5100, and the 5100 kicked its butt. The 5100 has much better image quality and does a way better job in low light over the D200. I do prefer the size of my D50 to the 5100, though I have big bear hands so maybe that's the reason. The 5100 also lacks an internal focusing motor, so several of my lenses that work fine on my D50 will only work in manual mode on the 5100, which wouldn't be a big deal except i find going into manual mode much easier and faster on the D50 than the 5100. I think that is on purpose as the 5100 is more of a consumer camera vs an enthusiast or semi pro camera. Full disclosure: I just bought the new D7100 and flippin love it. I upgraded because I want a more robust body and faster autofocus and faster period, and the D7100 does all that. But the 5100 is still an awesome camera for the majority of folks and i highly recommend as a shooters first or second DSLR. Put a good piece of glass on it, like the 1.8 35mm and get the cheap SB-400 flash, and you will be amazed at the quality of your photos.

The camera was on sale so I bought it but instead of it they sent me machine for wood or something like that and now they don't want to exchange it for my camera coz the price for camera is higher now So I got my money back and no camera Disappointed so much It was Xmas present Thank for nothing Now I have to find a different place to buy my camera and to pay moreAwful service

I'm learning to make this camera work. Turn off all the automatic rubbish and just take good pictures. Start out with the 50mm 1.8 lens. The kit lens is not very good.

Very nice , light , good working, but it reach me with broken lcd glass , this disappoining , i repair it without return and don't bay used tools by amazon in the next days. May be the glass broken during transfer backage or others. But i m very happy about my first dslr nikon.i hope recieve all my tools in good conditions during transfering through amazon with good backaging.

I got this camera for my 14 year old daughter, she loves taking pictures and seems to have a talent for it. She loves this camera it takes great pics and its pretty easy to use. I would definitely recommend this camera. I got really good deal on amazon. What can i say amazon they are amazing.

This is my first dslr. I was split between Canon and Nikon for quite a while, but after holding this one in the local target I absolutely loved it. The build quality for this one was better than similarly priced Canon T3/T4 etc. and it feels much better in hand. The colors are very nice. You can get more technical analysis on that on any site like dpreview, so am not getting into that.One of the very useful feature for this camera is the vari-angle LCD viewfinder. In cases where the camera is awkwardly put on a tripod and you are unable to use the OVF, this can be an extremely useful feature. The kit lens (18-55mm f3.5/5.6 VC) that comes with it is amazing. Its extremely sharp, has fast and near silent autofocus and works well when used wide at 18 mm. When wide open, I have noticed slight overall softness in the lens, but that can be very easily corrected in photomatix that I use.The camera flash and the flash compensation work like a charm and so far have produced excellent lighting results for me. As an amateur, you get a lot of stuff to play with in the manual mode, starting from the obvious aperture and shutter speed control to exposure/flash compensation and many other stuff like controlling the white balance. The IR port makes remote shutter release cable free and long exposure shots a child's play.I haven't tried shooting video with it yet. But all in all, with an amazingly good kit lens, great color rendering, very well balanced flash output, I believe this camera will sweep any photography lover off his/her feet :)

It arrived well before we were expecting it to arrive, so we were able to start playing with it right away!

I have always loved photography. I started out with a 8mp Sanyo. It lasted for a while and once I started to get a little income, I told myself that I will have a DSLR. Done my research for a while. I was looking at Canon, but Nikon was the first I went in depth to. Bought my 5100 Wednesday Nov 16th 2012. I bought the bundle and with my discount, it was even cheaper. Elated was not the word to describe me that day because those who know me at my job knew it was all I talked about and I worked my tail off as well. Saved every penny and did not spend haphazardly. Once I got home, I charged up my camera and just like any newbie, I took pictures of random stuff and did not read the instructions. As a result, my photos did not come out good starting out. At the time, I was not familiar with the jargon like I am now. After going through my camera and figuring everything out, the quality of my photos are amazing. As any entry level DSLR's, you get what you pay for as well. Focusing is an issue, which I am sure many of you experience. Taking photos at low light as well. I do not like using my flash unless I have to... I have three batteries, two which are aftermarket brands and I have not used the original in a while. With that being said, I have never been happier with my purchase. Looking to get the D7000 in the summer and will call it quits. The 5100 is great to start out with. It is very user friendly and overall, it is just awesome. You have to play with the camera and test it in all settings.

- Canon or Nikon: This might be overwhelming decision and really you can't go wrong with either. Personally, I prefer Nikon's quality and control. The flip side is with Canon is their lens are often available on a deal (but Nikon's lens are less likely to be on deal).Assuming you have decided to go with Nikon,- If you can spend $500 extra, go buy D7000. It is absolutely the best camera you can buy right now.- If budget is important for you and still want good photographs, buy D5100 without kit lens and spend extra on lens (like Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens).- If really tight on budget, just buy D5100 with kit lens. You should be OK for a while.- You will lose some very very advanced features with D5100 (as compared to D7000), but trust me you won't really miss them unless your daytime job is being professional photographer. Again, when I mean features, it's ease of control (i.e. instead of going to Menu > Select certain feature via LCD in D5100, you will have that accesible directly on the body of D7000), not better quality ... that will be determined by the quality of lens and your knowledge about photography.- Since D5200 is on its way, D5100's prices are falling steeply. So, it might be a good time to buy this (I got $250 off on camera (which is OK), but also $250 off on Nikkor lens and AmazonBasics bag + Transcend 16GB SDHC memory card for free). Another reason I bought it was I am going on an overseas trip and want to take good photographs. Not to mention, D5100 is much lighter than D7000, but D7000 is much sturdier (if you plan on photographing in extreme weather conditions).

Only good words to be spoken about this camera. Seems all of Nikon's DSLR cameras are well worth the price for a professional photographer, yet this camera gives you all the tools with a lower price AND usability by a picture taking noob. Point and click! If you're not sure it was a good photo, just keep clicking! EXCELLENT CAMERA!

I bought this camera looking for something that would work well for someone just starting out with photography. Simply put, I wanted a camera that I could basically use as a point and shoot, and as I developed my skill set be able to take more control over. So far it has fit that bill perfectly. Many of the settings are customizable, but work pretty well with the first click. The photos are crisp and the response of the camera is much faster than small point and shoots. Battery life seems to last forever for simple photos, but gets burned very quickly when in video mode. Video's are pretty nice and are shot at 720p. Since it will only do 30 f/s in video, slow motion isn't great.The included software is sufficient, but I wound up switching back to iPhoto for its ease of use. I had to uninstall the software just keep it from opening every time I plugged in any A/V device to my computer.

I used to shoot with a Cannon AE1, but that was like the last decade! Ordered this as a Christmas gift to myself. What a camera! Now all I have to do is learn how to shoot good pictures with it. Maybe some day I'll get a different lens, but for now, it's great!1

I got this DSLR to complement my aging but much loved Nikon D70. I thought long and hard about getting a D7100, which has higher burst speed, better construction, more advanced auto focus system, and more external manual controls but ended up settling on this because it uses the same sensor and bide my time to go full frame format with a D600 or Canon 5D Mark III.The 5100 handles well although it could use more external controls. Given its target audience the lack if these is understandable. Picture quality is high and the sensor performs well in low light. The high resolution LCD is a very welcome step up from the tiny one in my D70.Overall the body is meaty enough for prime and medium zoom lenses. Balance is thrown off a little when mounting large glass but that's fine. This is an entry level DSLR but it does not feel cheap or fragile despite the all plastic construction.A great camera at a great price point. You could pay a lot more for the D7100, but why would you?

Love the camera so far. With very little instruction was able to take great shots, mostly indoors, at my dughter's wedding. Easy to switch from still to video, which is great with a very high-speed memory card (80) and love the preview screen. Looking forward to learning more of the manual settings to really dive into the camera's capabilities but loving it so far vs the workhorse Dx 40 it replaced.

I picked this after doing a ton of research (Ken Rockwell's site speaks very favorably about it, for one) and I couldn't be happier with it! The lack of noise is acceptable even at the highest ISOs. Very user friendly interface, even for me switching over from the Canon I had previously.

After a year of taking crappy pictures of the kids with a pocket digital, where shutter lag made me crazy, I am so glad I finally spent the money and got this camera. It actually takes the photo when I press the button! I was able to get great action shots of my son at the bike rodeo, using my 55-200 lens, and they are wonderful! The standard lens that comes with it (18-55) works fine for photos around the house and outside.

I bought this for my daughter for her high school graduation, and wanted to wait until she had it awhile before I left a review.I have to say that she is VERY pleased with this camera -- it is easy to operate and gives very good, professional quality photos, in my opinion. She is now a student at a prestigious art college and uses it a lot; her professor and other students have admired it and also feel that she made a good choice.Would definitely recommend. Also got an extra lens and a very nice case for it, which I recommend as well especially if this is to be a gift. An expensive camera like this needs to be protected. :)Update July 2013: My daughter has now owned this camera for slightly more than one year, and it will no longer charge. There's no telling if it's the battery, the batter charger, or the camera itself; but after paying $1000 (by the time we added accessories) and being told this would be the last camera I'd ever need to buy, I'm VERY disappointed. Especially in Nikon! I called them, and they could have cared less. They flatly stated that the one-year warranty has expired, but that the battery wasn't covered under the warranty anyway. Their suggestion: send the whole thing back for a repair estimate, or purchase a new battery, end of story. Not even an apology (although they did send me a feedback form, which I intend to fill out and return). They spent more time collecting my personal information on the phone call then they did with suggestions on what to do.I think this is yet another example of a good name brand letting their quality go downhill. Sign of the times, I'm afraid.Now wish I had purchased the Canon.
