After reading review after review for film scanners I decided to purchase the HP S20xi and I don't regret it. If I properly exposed a slide in the first place I hardly need to make any adjustments to the scanned sample. The S20xi scans my color and chromogenic negatives wonderfully. The scanning software that is including in the box is good. With it you can crop, adjust brightness, shadow areas, colors, etc. before you perform the actual scan. My only complaint so far (I've only had it for three days and I've scanned about 60 pictures so far) is the dust. I have a light box and I clean the neg/slide until I'm sure it's spotless before I put it in the scanner. The scanned image still has some dust spots and I've use air on the scanner to no avail. It's not too big of a deal to me to remove the dust spots using Photoshop, but it would be nice if the scanner had ICE or at least was willing to let my air remove the dust! Overall, I'm very happy with the S20xi...if you want to enhance your images for personal digital printing or simply archive your photo library to CD (as I'm doing), the S20xi is a good alternative to higher priced scanners.

I recently purchased a new computer with this scanner as part of the package. I had fought with scanners before and was generally dissapointed with the results. After a couple of months with this product I have become much more comfortable with with with scanning, either graphics or documents. The support program is excellent. You are able scan directly into the appropriate program. While the negative and transparentcy takes some getting used to, it works efficently. Scans are crisp and have plenty of definition. I have worked the with the the scanner in both Photoshop 4.0 and WordPerfect 8 with excellent results. I work with documents for a living and graphics for a hobby and look forward to many hours of enjoyment with this piece of hardware.

If you want this scanner buy the plain s20 and do not buy the s20xi. The difference is in the software that comes with it and, for approximately 100.00 more you get to be the proud owner of software that is 2 years out of date and, in general, junkThe scanner works fine

I've owned this scanner for almost 1-1/2 years and love it.I agree with the one reviewer about not being able to adequately clean the dust off but it's easy enough to remove any spots with PhotoShop. I like being able to have one scanner for all film types and I have lots of slides. I now just process film...and use the scanner to get the pix into my computer. I never buy prints anymore, why bother!

Do NOT get this scanner. Get the Minolta Dimage Scan Elite (or the slightly lower end if you want to spend same price as this one.) I did quite a bit of research before deciding on this scanner, so I'll sum up for you what took me many hours. I also considered a couple of the lower end Minolta Dimage scanners, as well as the Nikon Coolscan and the HP Photosmart S20.Essentially, they all promise to scan 35mm film, and with an adapter, it can also do APS. However, promises are just that - empty for most of these scanners. The problem with the Photosmart 20 is that it doesnt have a proper ICE image cleaner and film scans poorly. The Minolta line is MUCH better.This one is OK if you dont mind some bad scans and a SLOW SLOW tiem for each scan. Go for a Minolta, in my opinion.

Have had the S20 for a month and find it produces excellent JPG files. The best part is the software - easy to use - allows changes - enhancement before you scan - save in any folder - etc. Amazon was prompt and kept me informed about shipping status.

After 5 months of experience with this machine, scanning 500+ slides, I have several things to say about this devcice:The Hardware is basically OK, also the results are satisfying. The way to achieve the results is another story. The software is cumbersome. My primary application is to scan unmounted slides. 1.) The algorithm to find the pictures' boundaries produces random results in 50% of the cases, meaning that you always have to check and manually adjust. This is especially true with Kodachrome film.2.)There is no 'quickscan' option, in the sense that you can scan a strip of slides without preview for bulk scanning. Meaning if you want to do a whole role of film you need time.3.) Third, the USB implementation of HP seems not to be as clean as sony's and causes trouble every once and a while (same applies to my HP Scanner, Printer)The most important thing is, that the result is really good, but the way to get there is not a quick and trouble free one. Therefore three stars.

HP will not supply parts to anyone for repair of this product. They have chosen to do this on some of their products. If something goes wrong with this product it will cost you $216.00 plus shipping to get it repaired. Before purchasing any HP products we will be asking if HP will supply parts. If not, we will go to another manufacturer.

Installation is not trouble free. Maybe it will work, maybe it will not. Have two computers with W2K and managed to get it going on one. While trying to find out what might have gone wrong I uninstalled the scanning software, installed it again and now I have a scanner software that will not work in either computers. First I tried the HP's Knowledge Data Base where you will find only obvious topics like: "Check that all cables are properly connected" and so on. I tried e-mail support and it takes two days to get an answer. The support personnel at customer care does not know Windows 2000, their experience is limited to Windows 98.On other matters HP's quality is good, but scanning speed is slow compared to lower-priced Agfa, UMAX and Microtek scanners (maybe due to the scanning software). Even if you have the extra buck to buy 3rd party scanning software to control the HP ScanJet line I would not recommend it.Very disappointing product and support for HP's reputation.

I recently purchased a new sony computer with usb options and found the scanner could not recognize the usb capabilities , this problem may be caused by a the microsoft millenium operation system.hp has no information on microsoft millenium on their web site and I cant figure outhow to make my favoite device work.

This is a great overall scanner with helpful features. The first scan I did matched the original exactly (as far as I could tell). It was easy to set-up and quick to scan. I really like the transparency adapter that comes with it. If you use large format slides or negatives, this scans 5" by 5" which really comes in handy. Not to mention the bundled software, you get a really good package. I recommend this for anyone who needs to scan images for catalogs, newletters, web pages, etc.

I would have to say that this scanner has been causing me many headaches. it dosn't work properly and conflicts with everything! it made my computer stall for around 5 seconds every 10 mins and my printer printed out nothing it was suppoes to until i uninstalled the program and disconneted the scanner and everything worked fine. ( i tryed this on 4 computers and it did the samething on each one) the web site was a little less than worthless. the patches didn't work at all and one of the files they suggested to rename was not even on the hard drive. i would have to say this was a very bad buy..

After wistfully wanting a slide scanner but knowing they were out of my price range, I jumped at the chance to get one under $500. Normal scanners just don't have the resolution to do slides or negatives. I was expecting a lot of hassle, as is typical with periperhals, but this little scanner was really easy to set up and use. It lets you make corrections to contrast, color level, brightness, etc., before you actually scan. I take a lot of slides and can finally make prints from them easily on my printer (before i had to pay big $$ to have slides printed, since they have to make a negative and then print from that, resulting in major quality loss). I also take a lot of black and white portraits, but don't have a darkroom. I can finally tweak the image just like I'm developing it myself with chemicals.Scanning is fast and the results are sharp and colorful. It's pretty amazing for the price.

Thank God for H/P! I do a lot of photography and being a purist (using film and a darkroom) I resisted the move to digital imaging mainly because I couldn't find what I needed without a second mortgage on my condo. I needed to be able to scan negatives mainly because the scan quality is higher resulting in better print quality. When I saw the S20's bang for the buck, I knew that my digital imaging time had come. This scanner is the greatest thing since sliced bread as far as I'm concerned. And knowing H/P quality to be what it is, I bought my S20 with every confidence and not a second thought. My faith has been well-rewarded. I couldn't ask for more for what I have invested. Anyone planning to scan photos, slides, and negatives need look no further than the S20. Thanks H/P!

I purchased this with price in mind. Oh my was I surprised that this inexpensive scanner ran circles around my much more expensive HP 5P scanner. Great buy, great scanner.

I originally bought the Olympus ES10 and returned it because it was very finicky with certain negatives. It seems to really exaggerate negative that were slightly overexposed and created very blueish scans from certain negatives which were hard or impossible to correct through the clunky Olympus scanning software."~ for a wide range of under/overexposed shots and color biases.

Love this scanner: easy setup, high quality. Unfortunately, bought new computer with windows 2000 as operating system. HP scanner web site says HP will have W20000 drivers out in Spring, try NT 4 drivers in meantime. Don"t work for me, miss my scanner very much, hope they mean Spring 2000!

The HP ScanJet 3200C is one of the best scanners out on the market today. With its affordable price and true scan technologies it is on my top ten list of essential computer accesories. Not to mention it is easy to use, and an effective tool for all ages ranging from 8 to 80. With its 30 bit scans it is truly able to capture the brillance of colors of a scanning subject. Using the HP ScanJet LT Software you are able to scan text,pictures and much more. You can also send it to any program on your computer capable of viewing an image file. Or you can convert it into a domument file and view it anywere on your computer. Using there proportions tool you are able to cut out sections of a picture and and send only needed parts, cutting down the amount of space needed on your hard drive, zip drive, CD-R, or floppy disk. So in closing the HP ScanJet 3200C is an all around versitile accesory at a low down to earth affordable price.

Purchased the scanner on December 19, 1999 and have used it with success. No problem installing. I have duplicated photos with it and get very close color comparison. Get very good color if the picture is printed on a glossy surfaced photo paper with a good white-bright background. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a reasonably priced scanner.

I recently bought this scanner and was scanning within 10 minutes of opening the box! It seemed to work fine, but the color quality was dull. I printed a few pictures and they didn't look like the originals, they seemed "washed out". The scanned in images came out lighter than the original picture.

Be careful if you have an Office Jet 610 when you buy this product. The software is not compatible. You cannot print after you hook up the scanner. So far we have not found a good solution, so we have had to disconnect the flatbed scanner and cannot use it, which is very disappointing.

I've used this HP scanner to add pizazz to the pages on several professional websites and I am delighted with it. It was the easiest to install... follow the simple directions. Comes with Adobe PhotoShopDeluxe 2.0 image editor which also does a great job... and va voom... I am "pasting up" photos and graphics to spice up my site... and zooming up a photo album to share the news with family and friends accross the world
