I bought the scanner a year or 2 ago and every thing was working properly, until I connected it to my new computer a week ago and it wasn't detected by windows. I did some testing and found out that the plug stopped working. It doesn't have a light in the front, so I don't know if it's getting power, but I connected another plug and windows detected the scanner and installed it. then I found out that the plug was the under powered(I needed 12v, 650mA, The one I used one that was 9V, 300mA). So I bought one that was 18v 1100mA that worked with a printer at a second hand store, figuring it would work with the scanner, and that the voltage and current was just the maximum value that it could support. Since I'm studying Electrical Engineering I know this is possible and if the product doesn't it's probably so you have to buy the exact same kind of plug.I went to HP website and they want $15 for it Which IMO is too much. While there I had to click on about 5 links before I found what I wanted, it's very unhepful and also tech support isn't free. The USB cable that came with the scanner is too short. The Software worked well when I't was functioning, but I had trouble getting things to scan straight.

I do IT work and my company is currently purchasing scanners for various departments. I've already had to deploy these scanners and have found nothing but frustration with these machines. I agree with most everyone else's assessment that the software that comes with these devices is horrible. But I also think the scanner itself is just designed poorly. I thought it was just this HP model but doing all the research that I've done to find a better scanner, it seems that all HP scanners get bad reviews (with the exception of All-In-One products). I don't know what is wrong with HP or whether these scanners are even touched by any of their design engineers. I've had good experiences with most of their other products (computers, printers, servers) but their scanner lines just seem like an afterthought. Anyway, if you are looking for a good scanner, I would recommend the Fujitsu Scansnap fi-5110EOX2. We don't have them in our company yet but we do have the more expensive Fi-4220C2 models and I love this scanner. It's fast, the software is designed nicely, and it scans well. And considering the overwhelming positive reviews that the Scansnap has gotten from other Amazon reviewers, I'm pretty sure they use the same technology throughout all of their scanner products. We are currently going to order the higher model fi-5110C to replace all of these junky HP scanners. I will write another review once I know that these scanners work well as well.

Another corporation trying to take money by maliciously hyping a product. I've had nothing but problems with all HP-created software (including this scanner). I will not use HP again. As my father taught me, "if you hang around with losers, you will become a loser." Don't hang around with HP. You will waste time, money and energy.

This is not your use at home to scan the kids pictures scanner. This is a low cost mid-business to small business machine. I found it to scan about 50 documents very fast and clear. Easy to install and get started. From unbox to scanning about 25 min, that is with all the shipped software installed. Shipped with a high level OCR program the works great. Looking for a document scanner this is your scanner.

BEWARE of using this if you are trying to scan to PDF - especially if you use PaperPort software. The pdfs show up with a documate watermark on them indicating that it is a trial version. GOOD LUCK getting it off...tried the ScanSoft support - they know it is an issue but their 'fix' doesn't work and you'll have to pay $40 if you want to talk to someone. Still have not figured this out. Also, pages scan at 25pp per minute once they start going through - the wait time at the start is long (even if you don't use the energy saving mode).

I like this scanner for a few reasons:(1) The ADF: If you fan out your paper and try to remove folds in it, the ADF works just fine. It is pretty fast too at around 10 ppm at 200 dpi b/w. Although it says it has a 35 sheet capacity, I regularly load 50-60 sheets into the feeder with no problem. It does have problems occassionally with cardstock and other thick paper, however. I wouldn't recommend it for scanning a load of photos.(2) I can't speak about the software because I haven't used it...if you just download the TWAIN drivers, you can use Windows XP's scan wizard. This allows you to control whether the scan is from the ADF or regular flatbed. Also allows you to control basic things like brightness/contrast, dpi, bw/color. Also, if you have multiple pages of the same thing like a report, save it as a TIFF file which will allow you to condense the whole thing into one multi-page file which can later be converted to pdf.All around great scanner and a big time-saver.

We have been using the scanner for the past 10 months now and have nothing but troubles. Out of the box, we had to call tech support several times because the ADF wasn't working well. They basically had to replace the whole unit before we could get it working properly. Then they charge us an extra $150 because they claim that they never received the returned part. The return was arranged by them thru Fedex and the pick-up was completed, but since they claim to have never received it, we were charged. We checked with Fedex but since HP arranged the pickup we could not verify that it was ever delivered to HP. The software is horrible. To get a readable grayscale document, you need a high resolution and thus end up with longer scanning time. Talk about watching molasses drip. It also frequently frezes the iMac. The automatic document feeder frequently eats documents. Has a very good appetite. As a color scanner it works ok but that is not what it was purchased for. It was purchased to scan documents to the computer. It has failed miserably. I have had two other HP scanner/printers/MF machines and none work well with Mac. Skip HP if you have a Mac. Extremely poor customer service....

Needed a new scanner for my Dell with Windows XP Pro system since HP didnt make drivers for my old 1999 scanjet( which is still going strong along with my HP 882C printer) and looked into all sorts of scanners. I wanted something sleek, non complicated and inexpensive. I found this one at Staples for $44.99. It installed fast, but I did get an error message about Java Virtural Machine not being found. After clicking OK, the scanner went on to install without a problem. I was Concerned so I called HP. Yes, they use support from India....but who doesnt anymore. Anyway, was told it would not effect the functioning of the scanner in any manner, and so far, it hasnt. This thing scans into any type of file you want. TIF, JPEG, RTF, TXT, PDF, HTML.....you name it, IT DOES IT. The strange thing is, when it scans as a PDF file, it deposits a DPE.DUS file into My Documents too. I dont know why, and you cant open it. I delete it, and the pdf file still opens....so I dont know what to tell you. Some complain about the Pink Glow the lamp emits while scanning. If you recall, GE has the same color bulb for your home lamps and says it emits more of a NATURAL color against objects ( less yellowing effect) which is important if you are scanning in photos. The color photos I've scanned, reproduce identically to the photo itself.I am WELL PLEASED with this little unit. Yes, it does scan a little (and I mean little) on the slow side......but for $45.00 you cant do better or get more options than this unit.

I have used this scanner on 3 different PCs and haven't had a single setup issue. You can get these for a great price here so they're definitely worth checking out.

I initially tried to use the scanjet with my Compaq Presario 900. After spending over 2 hours with technical support, they recommended I update my Bios, Re-install XP, or buy a self powered USB Hub. I tried the USB port option to no avail. I wasted my money. I bought a brand new Compaq Presario V2220US Notebook and still could not get the scanner to work. One would think a new Compaq could communicate with a new HP. After another 2 hours with technical support, they concluded that the scanner was defective. I received a replacement scanner and received the exact same error message. I read the ZD NET reviews and Amazon reviews after my purchase and learned too late that the product (Software) is apparently defective. I have used 2 other HP multi-function printer-scanners successfully. I am now waiting for a return call to honor my request for a full refund. I agree with the other opinions that the software is defective and furthemore, uninstalling the software is extraordinarily complex. Please don't waste your time and money like I have. Shame on HP for continuing to market this defective product.

There are two options for scanning those beautiful old 35mm slides, either a cheap plastic flatbed scanner with a slide holder in the lid or a VERY expensive dedicated slide scanner that is probably overkill for most of our old slides-in-a-shoebox. At one time HP made the perfect solution, but as HP so often does they "reinvented" themselves so many times they forgot how to make products that truly make sense. The S20 was unique and brilliant. You could scan slides, negatives or album-size prints with incredible quality and at a price that should have killed every other slide scanner in the business. I won't get too technical about this product because HP decided to ditch it and I was ever so lucky to buy it right after it was discontinued and got a brand-new one for dirt cheap through Amazon. So my review is that this is a rare product that was worth what it cost and if you can find one at a good price used - BUY IT!

In less than a month my husband has already scanned more than 500 antique and more recent family photos with it, dating from the 1890's to present. It is portable and has allowed him to work on this masssive and still-incomplete project in various locations. The photos have provided us many a fun jaunt down memory (and pre-memory) lane as they are projected in slide shows on his computer screen. The scanner is perfect for this application.

Bought the HP 7400c along with a separate large-format scanner to handle the scanning needs of our local historical society. The large-format scanner does 600dpi max and has no backlight, so we got the HP 7400c to do slides, negatives, and high-resolution work. I've used, and have been impressed by, HP scanners in the past, so I though this would be a no-brainer. In my opinion, HP has completely dropped the ball when it comes to the quality of its hardware, device drivers, and software. (My background: I'm an MSEE electronics hardware designer by day, tech volunteer by night, and assemble many PCs a year for family, friends, and myself.)The HP 7400c has been nothing but trouble for us and I feel terrible about recommending the purchase, particularly now that started seriously acting up on the wrong side of the year warranty. Even when not in use, the stepper motor now constantly exerts torque on the toothed drive belt. It often slips and causes annoying "thumping" sounds from the scanner. We now have to keep the scanner disconnected from its power supply now when we aren't using it. I called HP but they want more money to fix it than the cost of the scanner we should have bought in the first place. Let me be clear here, this scanner has scanned no more than 40 items, has had power applied to it for no more than 200 hours, has lived an altogether pampered life from the day it was manufactured - and now it is broken! And because it is just a few days out of warranty, HP has washed its hands of the matter. I understand that HP has no legal obligation at this point, but they should be ashamed of themselves for making such a poor product.Aside from breaking at the end of the warranty period, this scanner has been a constant thorn in my side. Right out of the box the HP 7400c would not peacefully co-exist with the other scanner on the SCSI bus. I tried everything including all of the firmware and software upgrades I could find on the HP web site, but finally gave up and installed another SCSI controller card in the PC. After experiencing some stability problems with the PC (and to be fair, I cannot prove whether the 7400c or the SCSI card were to blame here) I switched the HP 7400c over to the USB port instead (requires clunky un-install and re-install of the software). This slows down high-resolution scans and completely negates the reason we bought a high-end model in the first place, i.e. to get a high-bandwidth connection between the scanner and the PC. The buttons on the front of the unit work only sporadically, and never correctly twice in a row - a pain since I wanted to set this up so that anyone could do simple "copies" via the scanner and printer. And the scanning software inexplicably bases the resolution of the scan on the "size" of an image rather than dpi. Cryptic nag screens are always popping up informing me that the "size" is wrong when I am trying to scan a negative for instance, and I am never sure how to act on them as they want to perform some unspecified automatic adjustment. My preference is to perform raw scans at an appropriate dpi (no image alteration by the scanner software) and then manipulate them in Paintshop (lower the resolution, sharpen, adjust brightness & contrast, etc.) - the HP software fights me every step of the way here.Epson scanning hardware and software are vastly superior, I heartily recommend the Epson Perfection 1660 Photo, which I have at home. USB2 is definitely the way to go with a scanner. I will avoid the purchase of ANY HP products in the future, including printers (Canon does a better job here IMO).

So far I have scanned over 700 out of the 2500 35mm slides my father took in the '70s . I scan at the highest 2400 DPI resolution, entire image. I have had no problems whatsoever with this scanner. For $... the HP Photosmart is an unbelievable steal -- almost an impulse buy in comparison to the $...+ scanners available. I was worried about these slides degrading and the fact that nobody uses the projector anymore. Now the slides cannot degrade and are easily burned to CD for sharing with family.Details:This scanner scans slides and negatives not at 1600 DPI, not at 1800 DPI, but at 2400 DPI. At this resolution you can easily blow up photographs, find hidden closeups. I was able to zoom in on a family member's watch at 25 feet and tell the time, or zoom in in on a 2mm object in a 5x7 photo and tell that it is a "no parking" sign. As it is, a 2400 DPI full size TIFF takes up 20Mb of disk space. More resolution and you will have outrageously large files, unless you want to use lossy JPEG compression. You will most likely need to purchase a big hard drive and extra RAM if you are archiving many slides or negatives, but with the low price tag of this scanner you can buy drive and memory with the money you save.Installation was a snap. Simply install the driver software, stick the scanner in the USB port and you're good to go. The scanning software is easy to use. It takes about one minute to preview, size, and scan a slide. The software allows you to save a size filter so you can don't have to adjust the preview borders for every image. The HP Photosmart software does not come with many bells and whistles. The multimedia organizer software from Broderbund is next to useless. The ArcSoft PhotoImpression software is also next to useless, unless you like running silly filters on photos. It does not have a good auto levels, auto contrast, or auto color, or dust correction, or anything. It allows you to crop and rotate images and remove redeye. I'd recommend checking out ACDSee or freeware image browsers. The scanning software does not include curve tools or ICE/GEM image enhancement. However, you can always purchase Photoshop and the correction plug-ins from Applied Science Fiction. You may also want to check out batch image processing applications like Debabelizer or RoboEnhancer for ACDSee. Some of these tools I have not yet purchased -- merely researched on the net.A few places for improvement: 1. The scanning software cannot save TIFFs using deflate/ZIP or LZW compression. Zip compression decreases image size on disk by about 20-25 percent.2. It would be nice if it supported batch scanning of slides with a tray, but for $... I won't complain.3. Negatives don't seem to scan as well as slides, but that could be because negatives deteriorate faster than slides.4. It would be nice if the scanning software had auto edge detection for images and default to that so you wouldn't need to run a size filter on every slide. All in all, the HP Photosmart is a winner. Don't spend money on resolution and features you don't need. Save money for a system upgrade. Get this baby and you're ready to rock.

I would first like to preface this review by mentioning that I used to be a programmer and system design analyst for Accenture, so I know a thing or two about software. It is really a shame that this great scanner comes with such lousy software. I already owned an HP scanner when I upgraded to this model specifically to take advantage of the auto document feeder (ADF) that allows for unattended scans of multi-page documents. Supposedly. Here's the problem--the software from HP that comes with the scanner is so buggy, slow and poorly written that it pretty much negates any advantages provided by the hardware itself. It is very inflexible, and unpredictable results occur whenever I deviate from the default settings--and the changes I make often do not take anyway (e.g., I deselect preview for scanning documents, yet it continues in preview mode anyway, slowing the process of creating a PDF). For example, if you want to scan a color document in 256 colors at 450 DPI using the document feeder, good luck. To achieve this, you will have to scan that document page-by-page or settle for the default settings of the software. The software supposedly allows for creation of scan "profiles" that apply specific settings when that profile is loaded, but I have not been able to get this feature to work after many attempts. It gets worse. If your goal is to take documents, large or small, and convert them to PDFs using Adobe Acrobat 6.0, the HP software keeps trying to reconfigure itself right in the middle of the process! There was a patch available on the HP website for this, and it has now disappeared. You might conclude that a good solution to this problem would be to download version 2.0 of the software. Wrong. The developers apparently thought it would be a nice treat to perpetuate this flaw in the new version, and no patch is available! Ridiculous. It's a shame, and a real step backwards for me, as my 3-year-old HP scanner is easier to use and interfaces with Adobe better than tne 5550C. Shame on HP for selling such an inferior product.

The ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) has severe problems, working only 40% of the time. I would never recommend this product. In the 30 days that I have owned this equipment, HP has sent me four (4) replacement ADF. I have finally reached my limit of frustration and will be returning this poor example of a scanner. The Customer Service people are extremely polite, however, unable to understand the problem presented. I found most of them to be almost incompitent. Additionally, when I was connected with a sales person to help me determine a more reliable scanner that I should purchase, I found that once again, they were unable to respond to the questions presented to them. I was almost wondering if I was speaking a language other than English. I have been very dissapointed with the entire process.

I am not rich and I paid a lot of money for this product.Thankfully, it was worth every penny and I have been using it happily for over 3 years. There are better scanners out there, but for the dollar, this is a fabulous machine: thus, the five star rating. That said, please note that this unit ***DOES*** in fact work with Windows XP. At one point I thought it did not work either, but it does. HP released an XP driver/software for it.At 70 MB, it's a hell of a download, but worth it for those of us that have moved into the 21st century. You can download it from the HP website.- Go to HP.com.- Select 'Home & Home Office.'- Type 'S20' into the Search field.- The HP Photosmart S20 and a photo will appear.- Select 'Download drivers & software' from this screen.- Select 'Microsoft Windows XP.'- Select 'PhotoSmart Scanner (SCSI) and S20/S20xi Photo Scanner (USB) Software.'- Click 'Download now' to being downloading ps804en.exe.- Follow instructions (or common sense) to install the software.- A Windows-based message will appear during installation that recommends stopping installation because the HP Photosmart software has not passed Windows Logo testing.- Despite your usually better judgement, ignore this and click 'Continue Anyway.'I was terrified to do this, but I called and e-mailed HP directly and was told in both instances that HP had tested and verified compatibility of the HP Photosmart software with Windows XP.My Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart S20 scanner now works like a charm on my Windows XP.Hooray for HP.

Hi I have tried the scanner for about one day (all the day) and decided to return it before the return policy vanish may be the picture quality is so good despite the lacking of the demoire removal feature that is not enough at the software and we can scan three dimensions objects and this is a bonus and we can create a very good resolution and zooming with the hardware without the need for the interpolation and is very controlled resolution and paper size for me i had a smudge or spot of colour in the internal glass so it made me a good plea and reason in front of the dealer to return the product the 1200 dpi are so plentiful and when we come to the bad at this scanner there are lots from the hardware the very big size of the scanner may become unacceptable but some could say it will have a good strong and lasting chassis for that and the second is the the lamp take much time to warm up and you could have to stay and stay and become bored as the warming of the lamp is done with every picture and even with every preview of the picture so when you press the scan or the preview button do not expect your order to be executed immediately but you have to stay and thing of something else until the lamp warms up and also i had bad sound seems the sound of something breaking each time the scanner lamp reach the bottom of the scanner during scanning and the sound was noticed by also my relatives as mother and sister and and they said what is this bad sound and bad scanner and your choice is wrong and when we come to the software the bundle is horrible bundle and the hp site do not permit us to download the software or the updates if any (i do not think any , they forgot this product) directely but they give cd with charge for those with credit cards and live in Us or Canada or UK only as i think so do not expect near update for the software and the software is horrible as i have to relaunch the software for every single scan and wait the lamp to warm up and the launch of software is slow although i got fast machine over 1000 mhz in speed so it is non practical and you will get bored easily and the descreening option is not sufficient and sould be activated at every single scan and the twain driver that come with the scanner halts and hangs many times inside the applications when i tried to import the photos within them and to bypass the very very very slow bundle of the scanner and the relaunching of the software for every single scan so the twain driver is very bad and will not solve and problems and you will get error messages as kernel 32 error and no pic will appear at many times you will try to import the photos within any application( got error messages in windows me ) so the conclusion is that the bad software bundle will make you so bored and will cause the scanner at all to become so boring and stupid and unpractical and the operation of the scanner for muliple scans will cause you to be very nervous and hate it so i do not recommend it and recommend canon for the breeze and user friendly and exciting and neat and comfortable software bundle as now i have canon canoscan n670u and very comfortable despite the resolution of 600 dpi but so so satisfied with the software and the twain driver of it

I use the scanner everyday for everything from documents to photographs. It is actually capable of scanning a stack of pages in the ADF very quickly into B&W PDF files. Unfortunately, as other reviewers point out, the HP software is mostly useless for this function. There is a trick that I will point out to everyone with this scanner or considering it if they can pick it up cheap from others who have given up: if you use Paperport or similar software and set the driver to windows WIA (rather than the HP driver), then set Page Size to "Quarto" when scanning from the ADF, then it works great. This is bizarre, and I have tried all the other page size settings and Letter will not work--you must use Quarto. Anyway, this proves that the machine is capable of good performance. It is alas software that limits the performance. Perhaps better WIA support will come in the future. In the meantime, despite the bad software, I found this machine to be the best value for a combo flatbed/ADF scanner that could take at least 35 pages. There are other choices like the Fuji if you want ADF without a flatbed, but it's still more expensive.

I wish to concur with other reviewers about the HP 5550C scanner. When you get the software to work correctly, the scanner can produce superb scans and the automatic document feeder works almost flawlessly (it occasionally jams, but not very often). But the HP software has been terrible. After a long wait, HP did release a fix so that the scanner does seem to work with Adobe Acrobat with no error messages, but the software still doesn't work completely correctly on multipage scans. I would unhesitatingly recommend the hardware of this scanner; but until HP can produce good software to interface with the scanner, you might want to consider other options.

I too could not believe the other reviews and wanted the ADF so bought it anyway. Normally, HP does quality work, but not this time.If HP had any decency, they would create a new version of the software and release it to the owners of this product along with an apology. In my many years of work in the information technology sector and considering the current state of technology, I cannot remember a product this poor from a major vendor.

I should say I didn't believe that this product is as crappy as other reviewers described. Because I really like some of HP products, especially HP has been in ADF scanner business for so many years. So I went ahead and bought a HP 5550C with thoughts that I (as a computer professional with 12 experience and a former HP employee) can manage to make it work. But clearly I'm wrong, and so wrong that the 5550C software is by far the worst software I have ever seen!!! I really do not understand that why HP even bothers to release this product to market, and HP should really "fire" the software team and the QA team for doing nothing but damaging its reputation.I agree with other reviewers completely. The 5550C hardware looks well constructed and sturdy. The problem comes from the software piece.Sigh ....

I bought the scanner specifically to use its ADF, since I have many 3x5.5 and 4x6 photos I'd like to bulk scan. The scanner does not offer either page size, but instead offers many other sizes like A6 and "Japanese Postcard" and a few other odd sizes. Picking any of the offered sizes, I get pictures that scan wrong, coming out too long. Although I can scale the pictures aferwords in Photoshop, it's a step that should not be necessary and results in reduced imaze quality from the resizing.I've also noted that the HP software will scan directly into a progam, but not directly to a file. Since I want to put in a stack of pictures, scan them to files, then put in the next stack, and keep at it for a large number of pictures, I find it a waste of time to have to wait for the pictures to load into the HP Director or Photoshop or some other program only to have to manually close them all before continuing with the next stack of pictures.I've made sure that I have the latest drivers and have spend several hours on a few occassions trying to make it work. I'm about ready to give up on it. Since I bought the scanner specifically to use the ADF and the ADF won't work correctly, the scanner is useless to me.
