The scanner works fine because it is a replacement. Had it not been a replacement it would have been a total failure - it came without instructions or a CD to load the drivers into my computer!!!

We bought two of these for work. One works great but the other one is going back. It worked fine for a couple of weeks and then the computer would randomly stop communicating with the scanner. Out of 10 pages, the HP scanner would scan 2 and then stop. Pop-up message on computer would say that it could not communicate and to check the cables. IT department checked the cables and reinstalled the drivers but no go. So it's going back to HP.The other one works great for small scanning jobs. It has a software that really cleans up crumbled or stained documents pretty well. It's called KOFAX VRS. KOFAX also does a great job at picking up really faint signatures on documents.This model has a lot of features such as profile saving, scan-copying with the touch of one button, slot to scan business cards, etc.The feeder is great at low dpi. The scanner is really fast at 300 dpi with black and white. Every now and then, the feeder pickups up more than one page so I have to make sure that the feeder is doing it's job when scanning a lot of pages, which to me defeats the purpose of a feeder.I tried to do 1200 dpi with several documents with small font(5 pt) but it went really slow and one particular set froze up my Adobe software even though I have 4 GB of RAM.One big complaint is that at 600 dpi and above, it makes this annoying noise like a belt is grinding inside or something. Luckily, most of my documents are done in 300 dpi --or as I call it the quiet mode.In summary, the scanner is below my expectations especially for the price. If you have a lot of documents to scan or documents that have been man-handled, this might not be the best choice. The feeder is very unpredictable at picking up pages one at time and at high dpi very noisy. Hopefully, the next model will improve on the feeder.

HP Scanjet G3110 Photo ScannerI bought this scanner from another source and can't return it to the store FAST ENOUGH. It isn't designed to do multiple scans in a row - it immediately takes you to the 'creative' page when you're finished scanning so you have to go back into the scan program over and over to scan multiple photographs. It won't allow setting dpi ahead of time and it won't remember any your settings between scans. It takes mine 55 seconds to scan one photograph at 300 dpi and won't recognize multiple photographs placed on the bed. It also crashed my Windows XP system several times and locked up the computer completely twice. You'd be smart to pay a few more dollars and buy a REAL scanner! Not even worth one star.

Our library purchased the hp Scanjet 8270 Document Flatbed Scanner a little over a year ago and it worked fine up until a day or two after the one-year warranty expired. It started making a whirring noise and produced an illegible image. We have been advised by HP that they do not sell parts or repair scanners because they are manufactured in a dust-free environment. We paid about $900 for the scanner. We've been unable to locate an independent company that would repair the HP scanner and so the cost expended for this scanner has proved to be cost-ineffective. Because of the no-repair feature, I do not recommend its purchase for libraries.

HP refuses to offer a Vista driver for the ScanJet 7400 series that works. I did a google search and realized I wasn't alone in unsuccessfully installing their Vista driver. HP's attitude is take it or leave it. I will never buy an HP product again.

I have used this type scanner for several years. It does about average job scanning items how ever it is slow on start up. I like the features of the HP director folder. Can not be used for faxing documents.

I have a large supply of negatives and wanted something fast and easy. This is NOT the product! It takes forever to scan and that is only after starting and restarting the program. Don't walk but RUN away from this item!

Did the job and arrived quickly. I had it for 2 year and fine for Windows based XP system. Will not work on Windows VISTA system.

I purchased the G3110 scanner to work with my new MacBook Pro. Nothing but problems. The images scanned easily enough but then crashed my system whenever I tried to manipulate the finished file. HP claims this scanner to be Mac compatible, but I am returning it tomorrow.

I write and sell software to control TWAIN scanners, and many of my customers write document scanning applications, so this review is specifically from that point of view. After years of frustrating experience, we tell our customers to avoid all HP scanners because of their 'whimsical' TWAIN drivers. I was excited that the N6010 might be a new day for HP in document scanning, and I know my market would love an ADF scanner at this price point.Sigh - no such luck. We experienced the same paper-feeding problems as other reviewers reported, feeding 2 and sometimes 3 or 4 pages together. This is *not* inevitable - our Canon DR-2080C and Fujitsu fi-5110C almost never do this, the N6010 did it frequently. It was clear after a few hours of testing that we could not recommend this model to our customers.Drilling down a level, the N6010's TWAIN driver is better than many HP drivers we seen, but has at least one egregious bug and several minor ones. The driver cannot have been written or tested by anybody familiar with the TWAIN standard. I'm sure it works with the in-box software, and I assume they tested it with some popular scanning applications. But I wouldn't assume it will work with any scanning application it hasn't been specifically tested with.If HP fixed the driver bugs (quite easy) and the feeding problems, this would be a standout product in its class.

Although this scanner is fast you can not always place a stack of paper in the feeder and press scan. It starts pulling through 2-4 of the pages at a time. This makes it very diff with the large stacks I am always scanning. I have to feed them one by one. And forget it if someone or something comes in and distracts me because now I have to start all over. I have also found that with large stacks I have to break them up into two files. If I scan to many pages (one by one) into one PDF file the scanner always jams around the same area of the stack. If you are only scanning a few pages for each file I would fully recommend this scanner it is quick. But if you are scanning large stacks of papers or what a scanner that you can count on to only take one page of a stack at a time and not need to be constantly watched while scanning I suggest you continue shopping

I bought one for my office and found it easy to install, great choice of one-sided or two-sided scans and the copy function works great too. About one of 100 pages may feed double due to an old staple mark etc., but I use it all day, every day for basic document scanning of 8 1/2 x 11 pages and it has been trouble free. I have since bought two more for other employees and have added one for my home office use. I see other ratings where document feeding has been a problem - it has not been for our company at all. This is a good mid-level vanilla document PDF scanning device. It is not for fancy/odd shaped pages or for damaged documents. It works very well for this basic business use.

I bought this scanner because our office was going virtual so at least 100 files needed to be scanned in from the past and then everyday business. It took me about 12 hours to scan over 100 files...which had many pages per file. The scanner works really well, does a great job. Every once in a while I had to turn it off and on because it became unrecognizable...or it could have been the computer. The scanner is suppose to duplex....I set all teh settings for duplex but it doesn't do it...this would be my only compliant. I'm not sure if I am missing something but I am pretty computer savy and found where it said to switch from single to duplex and it still doesnt do it. The scanner doesnt come with the best manual either......it's mostly just how to install it which is really easy. Over all I enjoy the scanner, it's really fast, hasn't jammed for me yet, gets the job done...my only wish is that the duplexing would work. If you are looking for a scanner that is like this for a cheap price then this is the one you should get....i love it! :)

UPDATEAs of Dec 2009, drivers and software for this product are still abysmal, so I've changed my review to one star. All that's needed is for HP, one of the largest companies on the world, to fix the drivers. But at this point, there's plenty other products on the market, so don't bother with this one.As other reviews have noted, there are 2 fundamental problems with this scanner.1-Eats paper. Yes it does, but as annoying as it can be, it's not too frequent, and anybody who really thought they would be able to just stuff pages in, hit scan and then walk away have obviously never spent much time dealing with computers and peripherals.2-Crappy software. The software's actually quite good, when it decides to work. By my assumption, this is fixable, HP just need to update the software, something they haven't done yet (still at version 1.0 as of this writing). Once they address that, I could see this being a 4-star rating, but until they do, this product just produces constant headaches here in the office.

After struggling with this scanner for over a year I finally replaced it with the scanjet 5590 which does everything that the 5550 was supposed to do. Physically the two scanners are identical on the feature set and form factor down to the buttons and hinges. The difference is that the 5590 comes with HP director software version 2.5. The 5550 uses version 2.0. The HP scanning software 2.0 does not load completely on windows 2000 precluding access to adjustments in scanning settings and changes in the default settings. Getting it to work at all took hours and each scan had to be have settings individually set up for an office trying to automate record keeping. What a waste of time and money. HP should give a full refund or replacement for every one of these they foisted on unwitting customers.

This series of 8200 HP scanners are excellent, this one was shipped fast but it was missing the setup instructions. But it is a perfect buy. a must in the office!

Adequate for office use. DO NOT buy one to scan film.Mine works OK to scan prints up to 8x12 or documents. The film/slide scanning attachments or software did not work from the first time I tried it. Unfortunately I found this out a few days out of warranty. It's absolutely useless.DO NOT buy one to scan 11x17 because, unlike our friend "Joe" says, the glass is only 8.8" x 14" Use a ruler much, Joe?I'm running XP pro 800mhz w/2 gig ram.

Another bitter customer, I've spent endless hours trying to deal with HP software bugs and now complete failure. Scanner scans well, but the effort required to get the software working is not worth it.

Double feeds documents so there is no point in loading up 50 pages to scan. You have to sit and watch it to see if it makes any errors.Ripped one of the pages it was scanning. The software is slow, it takes forever to open up a page. When it does the page is too small to read. You have to zoom to see the page clearly. This slows down your ability to work with the documents quickly. No software manual. Documents do not scan straight, they need to be deskewed but deskew does not work well.Naming each document is a slow procedure. I returned it after one week.

I can't rate this product yet because it doesn't work. It comes with no manufacturer warranty! I run an IT department and can't get it to work. I called HP and they confirmed it was a software problem but that I would have to purchase 45 minutes of "Help time" for $69.00 before they could address the problem! This is a brand new out of the box product. HP is a scam.

I've had this scanner for 6 months now. It worked OK the first month, but since then it loves to "eat" paper. It scans multiple pages at once. For example, a 20 page document, becomes 15 pages one scanned. I have to scan the same document multiple times (sometimes up to 12 times) until the scanner finaly scans each page. It gets to be very frustrating, actually, it's the worse piece of office equipment I ever purchased. Otherwise it works fine.

Great! I've had a flatbed scanner for years; and yes, I had the automatic document feeder (ADF) to go with it. The ADF never seemed to work and hand placing documents on the flatbed was time consuming. This HP Scanjet N6010 is heaven sent. Last night I scanned 250 pages (one scan was 32 pages all by itself) and not a single misfeed. It is super simple to change from 1-sided to 2-sided and from letter size to legal size. Too bad I didn't have this product years ago, it would have saved me countless mind-numbing hours scanning.

Spent almost an hour and a half with HP techs, what fun, and they determined the product defective, gave me a case number but now they can't seem to find it, and I get to start all over again and, in a foreign language - a nightmare. It's a 500 dollar doorstop. In the meantime, bought a Fujitsu FI-5120C like I should have done in the first place.

While this scanner is quite fast at running documents through, I found that it could not come close to getting any of them properly aligned. I spent more time de-skewing scans than it would have taken to do it on a flatbed scanner. It is plenty good for having 'good enough' images for record keeping, but useless if you are trying to keep higher quality digital records of paper documents.
