I paid $40.00 for this scanner at Circuit City. I got it home and about 5min after I took it out of the box I was scanning and printing some very old photos (yes I did install all the software). I have used other scanners (school, work, kinkos) and this has got to be the simplest to use. Fool proof. Just press a little button, if you want to email your scan just press the button with the envelope picture, just a simple scan just press the scanner button. Like I said Fool Proof. I have no idea what others are saying about white space being cropped out and the guy that says you need 4gb to install the software is a total lie. I guess he must have something against the HP brand. I will admit that the lamp takes some time to warm up (30 sec.) but that is really no problem. I will admit that the scans that it makes are not as good quality as some high end scanners but it is really great. I have scanned some old photos that are like 3x4 and have printed them up to 8x10 with great quality. I give it 5 stars because of the price I paid, the ease of use and the quality I get from it with my experience.

I have other HP products that I am very pleased with, an "all in one" Printer, a photo printer, and a portable printer that I am very pleased with. Howerer, this scanner is not one of those. I am very disappointed with it. I am taking it back to the store. I bought it mostly for scanning slides and negatives. this function does not work well at all when it does work. it then gives anerror when the scanning is complete and the image is lost.It is also very slow. I use my all in one for scanning but it does not have slide and negative abilities. HP customer service is the main glaring weak point with any product. If the product works OK, but if it dosnt you are out of luck you probably get no help from Hp. Many people know this by now. their reputation for good service is non existant.Several of us who looked into this problem suspect it is mostly a software problem. Since installing it in the computer it has also corrupted another HP software program.I would recommend that no one should buy this scanner. HP sure missed the mark with this one.

I bought the HP Scanjet 3500c 2 weeks ago (Christmas 2002) and found it did a great job scanning black and white drawings.The Scanjet driver software looks very similar to the HP Scanjet II software but the implementation of this "modern" release made using the scanner slow and a chore both via the TWAIN interface or the included HP software. This software was obviously thrown over the wall and into production without any thought to making life easy for the user.The major problem with the software is how it will automatically crop black and white (BW) documents incorrectly. I had to hand reset each page after a preview or I'll end up cutting off the upper margin of the page and scanning the cover on the bottom. Yes HP, the auto-crop check box is unchecked.I scan mostly BW documents. I want to set the scanner to scan 8.5x11 every time and simply can't. I have to manually reset the scan area EVERY page. So the software is half baked but at least it didn't crash. I would have kept the scanner if that was the only problem I could report.I was playing around with different originals and stumbled across a serious problem when scanning originals at 600 or greater. The RED color channel is stuck "on" 100%. This causes the photos to have a serious reddish hue to them (or BW scans using the RED channel to be all white). This only happens when the resolution is set at 600 or greater. Is this a HP hardware or a HP driver problem? I don't know but it's serious. The HP web site is no help and has not updated the 3500c drivers in the 4 months since release v1.0 was chucked out the door. The software annoyances, red channel problem, and 90 day warranty made me decide not to chance exchanging the scanner for another HP an being left hanging after 90 days while other manufacture's backup their products for a full year.I returned the scanner and will not purchase anything HP (to include Compaq now that they've merged with HP) that has to do with PC's (I was witness to a bad HP Pavilion computer experience 4 years ago) or photo imaging. Somewhere between the Scanjet II and today HP made their software harder to use, is content to ship products rushed to market, and reduced their warranty to 90 days.

I bought this scanner at a computer fair (Pikom PC Fair August 2003), in Malaysia. The lady bug like design catches my eyes, so I bought it after comparing the specs with some microtek and canon scanners, although Canon scanners are cheaper there. I only bought it so I can digitised 2 boxes(15 inch monitor box) of photos, but not slides or negatives. The scanner uses CCD which is currently better than CIS(new technology) used in some Canon scanners. Using CCD means heavier and bulkier scanners. Not a problem for me. Being a CCD type scanner, it is necessary to warm up the lamp, so my advise is to scan lots of photos in one go, which takes fewer time. You need at least 128mb RAM for this baby and a few hundred MB of space. Don't worry about the software that someone says took up over 4GB of your disc, it's not true. It works fine with WIN98SE with 64MB RAM but a bit slow. The "Profiles" were great. The body is quite sturdy. It fell from the edge of the bed(about 20 inches high)a few days ago but it still works fine. Email technical support was excellent(fast response and workable solutions), got a reply within less than 12 hours. Also you get to have a photo site from hp at hpphotto.com The quality was close to excellent for the price I paid.The scan area was a little bigger than A4, not too good here, and the power cord are quite short, about 62 inches.

I recently bought the hp scanjet 3570c to work with my OS X Mac only because my old scanner was no longer combatable with the new operating system. I have been less than pleased with the performance of my scanner. The interface is clumsy, and I feel that I have much less control over scanning preferences (i.e., descreening options) than I use to with my last scanner. The one button scanning never seems to work right. Spend a little more and get something that is going to work well.

The software that comes with this scanner is so bad you will wonder how it was ever shipped. Just awful. I spend four hours at various times trying to get it to run with Paperport. Completely incompatible. All I want is to scan pages into PDFs at 300 dpi in black and white using Paperport. It can not do this simple task. If you use its own software for scanning the results are even worse. If you like talking to tech support in India for hours on end with no resolution, buy this product. Unless you have a relative who works in tech support for HP and you want to talk to him regularly on company time - run away!

An awesome scanner for the money. Paid $39 at Circuit City (Sorry Amazon). Works like a dream. Of course you could get a higher end scanner but it would be a higher end price to boot. Does everything that the model replacing it does for about $50 less.

When buying a new scanner, (Finally decideding to buy a new one after using the same sloooowwwww TWAIN one for 6 years), quality and speed were the top factors, along with price. Simply put, for the price of this scanner, this is the one to go with.First of all, you insert the cd-rom software and it automatically sets up. I've seen many reviews that claim the software is bad and hard to use. I didn't have one problem at all, in fact, this was one of the easiest installlations I've ever done. Always check that you're computer is compatablie with whatever hardware you purchase. That will save a lot of crying and whining on your part.This scanner is a BREEZE to use. 3 buttons on the front direct your scan to email, your hard drive, or your printer. One touch scanner can't get much easier. And it's FAST. To preview the scan, it takes about 2 seconds. After cropping the area of the scan you want and finializing it, the time it takes will vary depending on which DPI setting you have set, but at the average 300 DPI, it takes only about 10-12 seconds. The DPI seetings range all the way up to 19200. The quality is EXTREMELY impresseive.Another handy feautre is scanning a doucment with editable text. Say you scan a magazine article. You can scan it as a PDF file and edit the text very easily. With USB connectivity, setting up the scanner is fast and easy. The software couldn't be simpler. VERY user friendly and easy to use. Within 3 minutes of set-up, I was scanning away.All in all, I am very satisfied with this scanner. I would highly reccomend it to anyone who's looking for a fast, easy to use, and high quality scanner. And with the price that this scanner is set at, this makes it a top pick.

I read some of the reader's comments and, frankly, I'm not sure if they're talking about the same scanner.The 7400c is large (it does accomodate 11x17 sheets so compact isn't one of it's features), takes a long time to initialize and warm up and still tends to be noisy but the reproductions are brilliant and scanning is a snap.It sets up in nothing flat and if you can lift the cover and push a button, you can scan. That's it. You can e-mail, import into another program, etc. The software installs effortlessly and it's quite easy to figure out without reading the manual.HP does not have a 1-800 number for customer support and that should be a mark against them. But, after a long wait, when you do get the staff on line, I've found them on different matters to be nothing short of patient, knowledgable and they always search until they find an answer.One gripe I do have with the 7400c is: why couldn't they put an On/Off button on it? I can never understand why most HP scanners are designed without this feature. Most of their other products (printers, cameras, computers) have it so why leave it off a scanner?But that's a small point when you consider that the 4700c scans quickly and easily with fantistic, quality, output.

I've had this product for a days and it scans ok but it is unacceptable in other ways.- Most importantly, when I press scan the software chugs away for 30 seconds before a dialog comes up. On further investigation, the software supplied is an amazing piece of bloatware.- The installation software sits there and chugs looking for DLLs for 15 minutes.- The installed software takes up an unbelievable 4Gb- It looks quite good but the button have little pictures but no text. How is a computer novice supposed to know what each button does?- The quality of the scanned image wasn't very good. I invetigated further and tried using the standard microsoft scanning software. For some reason the scanned pictures came out much better. Confirmed my suspicions about the software.

I had many many slides from years of photography to scan and so I set out to find a scanner that (at least had a built in slide adapter) would allow me to scan them fast, and in high quality.This product has done just that.I've read that the drivers for this product (for some operating systems) were not shipped with the product. I have Win 2000 and it was basically a plug'n'play experience. (i think that problem was basically with ME)I've used it to scan my photos, and the quality of them far exceeds my own expectations. I've used other scanners before and i find it just as slow, or maybe slightly faster than others. This must be a persistent problem throughout the technology of scanning, and not reflective of this product.The only thing i will say that is bad about this is that the three buttons on the front of the device are annoying! I have "hit" them many many time by accident, hence launching the program and starting the lamp, all unnecessary. (user fault of course) But i wish the buttons were on top... (and i'm sure there is some way to disable them... or maybe i just have to move my scanner to a new place in my room!)... But honestly they should not be in that location.Overall, great quality, awsome price and a great product. I'm specially impressed with the slide adapter.

I love this scanner! I got it over a year ago and it is still working strong. I got it for the ADF feature. I use the ADF with Acrobat Writer. Very rarely does the ADF jam and when it does its due mostly to user error. When it does jam it does not eat the paper and it?s easy to correct. The software that comes with it is simple to use. Make sure your computer has loads of memory if you plan on scanning anything over 600dpi. I?ve also used this to archive photos taken on the job and it does a great job at that. I don?t suggest buying this scanner if your main requirement is film or slides. For that you should get a dedicated machine. I?ve used with USB and SCSI. SCSI is faster but usually I don?t notice the difference unless I?m scanning over 600 dpi. The only bad thing I can say about this machine is that it can be noise. Good luck.

I've had the S20 for several years. It suffers a lot from "communication lost".The software upgrades do nothing to solve the problem.Buying expensive cables does nothing. Re-installing software does nothing.Adding high quality USB ports does nothing.Swapping computers (at least five different machines) does nothing.Once in a while it works and then it works adequately.You can tinker yourself to death with this one.

This scanner is fast and is of very good quality. I would highly recommend, do not fear with other reviews on this scanner, that is what your warranty is for if you should be unlucky to recieve a tainted product. Most places will be more than happy to work with you in the instance that something is wrong from the start. The scanner I purchased was perfect right out of the box the very first time! This scanner is an extraordinary scanner and the price is quite reasonable. I would highly recommend.

I bought this scanner a while back and I just absolutly love it.. The color scan on it is one of the best I have seen for a long time. It does good for black and white also. It's a little slow when it's scanning but for the money and the quality it does a great job. Buy one today you can't go wrong with HP period.

We didn't have a lot of money but wanted a good little machine.This Hp scanner did the trick.It's nice looking and performs well.Our scanning needs are not to aggresive.But we do use it a lot for pictures and record keeping.It's worth the price for the average PC user.

The set up was easy. Please note that Windows XP will not support two scanners plugged in at once. This gave me some problem until I figured it out, and un-plugged the other scanner.The slide scanner is great I would rate it 4 1/2 stars.It is great on Slides (35MM) but won't do medium (120) format slides.This is a down side for me.It is a little slow but still gives a excellant image.Be sure to dust off the sides and negetives before inserting them. This saves on image clean up later.All in all I am very pleased with this product!

This is my 2nd HP scanner. The first was the top of the line scanner of 1999. After a year it just stopped working. The bed lit up but then it would say "cannot find scanner." Even HP tech support couldn't figure it out. I got this one for Xmas, used it a handful of times, now I get a strange clicking sound and no scanned product. HP is sending me a new one... Maybe I should just buy a digital camera instead....... I will steer clear if HP scanners from now on...

I have had nothing but trouble with this scanner from the beginning. In fact, I had to return it twice before I got one that worked at all. HP Tech support is not all that good. I wanted to find the newest driver, and there is one, but they charge $...for it, unlike all other companies where you can just download driver updates. Every call is long distance, they have no 800 number for tech support. Everything has an extra charge. HP has gotten to be one of the worst in quality and support. I will never buy another HP product.

Some people have really knocked this unit in the reviews. I really know nothing about scanners but have wanted one for some time. I literally pulled the unit out of the box and started scanning after ten minutes of setup up time. I will agree that it probably is not the fastest scanner on the market but it does one hell of a job. I will probably invest in a better photo editing suit but I am definitely impressed. I just scanned a wedding picture and the resolution of the scan is just as clear as the picture itself.

I pulled this baby out of the box, put the CD in my computer, followed instructions on the screen and within 10 minutes I was scanning pictures. You want to talk about a BAAAAD scanner, talk about Microtek's: HP Scanjet rocks! Quality was great, the Scanning interface that pulls up when you do "Import..." in Adobe Photoshop was very nice and intuitive. All in all, if you have never scanned images in your life, or if you're an expert for all matters and purposes, this is a great bang for your buck. Happy scanning!

When using the automatic document feeder, it produces document scans that are skewed slightly. HP technical support says this is normal. I find this completely unsatisfactory. You will not be able to produce accurate document scans.Do not purchase this scanner if you intend to scan photographs. The scan quality if very poor. Scans appear with no contrast and overly pixelated in dark areas of photo scans. The colors do not appear correct.The performance is also unsatisfactory. It is very slow and extremely noisy.

This is the first scanner that I bought. And overall I am pleased with my purchase. The qualtity of photographic scans, considering the cost of the product, is very good.When it comes to installing software or peripherials, I don't like things that are complicated...who does? I have to say that I easily intstalled and started scanning withing minutes. Believe me I am no computer whiz.I still have to figure out how to use the buttons on the scanner.Overall opinion of this product is good quality and nice price.

This scanner crapped out after about 2 weeks of scanning. It starting scanning everything as solid yellow or red. HP support confirmed the scanner died. I got the scanner as a gift so I didn't have a receipt and even though HP new it was under warranty based on the serial number, they still required a receipt. Luckily, it was bought on Amazon and the person giving it to me printed off the order confirmation. Customer service with HP is still a hassle so I would avoid HP products if at all possible.
