First off, I would give this 4.5 stars out of 5 if half stars were available. The ding is only 10%, not really 20%. *smile*I got this printer extremely quickly, so that put things on the right foot (already five-starred the vendor).Unpacking -- Everything was easy to unwrap, and the handy reference card above the toner cartridge had easy to understand pictures on what tapes and brackets to remove (the orange color-coding helped, too). The instructions rated the initial "starter" cartridge at 1600 pages (if I read that correctly), which is way more than I expected for a starter. Five stars.Physical Setup -- No large power supply on the cord, the bulk is built into the printer. That's always nice. Power and USB hookups happened to be on a desirable side of the unit for my desk area, easy to find and easy to plug in. Five stars.Software (INITIAL SETUP) -- Here's the ding. On Mac OSX Lion it is hard to get things working. I have seen various lists for OSX setup, but I am not sure if those are for Snow Leopard or Lion (I think they are mainly for Snow Leopard, 10.6). In my research, there did not seem to be much enthusiasm for Lion (10.7). This is pretty silly. Lion has been out for a decent amount of time, and while I understand it has some substantial changes under the hood, HP should have this figured out with a downloadable update so that Lion users can get this done more easily. Luckily, I have a dual-boot Mac (Boot Camp should work, I didn't try a virtual machine route, like Parallels or VirtualBox) with Windows 7 on the other side. I booted into that, and every bit of software setup worked immediately and flawlessly as soon as I turned on the printer. I installed the base software and the updated firmware (that was seamless and fast, all built into the HP wizard), no issues. Booted back over into Mac OSX, and my iPhone, iPad, and Mac itself could see the now-AirPrint-enabled printer. So, five stars for Windows, three stars for Mac 10.6, and I have to say zero stars for Mac OSX Lion (10.7). Sorry.Software (after initial setup) -- Wonderful stuff. I love a browser-enabled interface because it is flexible, easy to access, and rich in information (I'm also a techie, so YMMV). The interface here is fast and clean. You can give the printer a manual or dynamic IP address (I went manual, so even if I move the machine around the house and power down/up a lot, I am sure to be using the same network address). The data captured for the printer ranges from total number of pages printed to estimated toner left to network minutiae I didn't even understand. And the network interface was accessible via Firefox by just entering the URL or by clicking a button from the Mac's own printer properties (which set up immediately when I booted back into Mac). Wonderful stuff, an easy five stars.Printer Build Quality -- The power button feels plastic-y and there is no doubt this is more consumer grade rather than business class. Then I remembered I payed $96 for a laser printer, and realized it all works just fine. Five stars. I like the second tray (above the main feed tray). I imagine it will be nice for things like pumping out envelopes without having to mess with a separate feeder tray on the back or changing the main tray. Everything just loads from the front into two separate feeders.Printer Print Quality -- I haven't had a laser printer at home for almost ten years, so I am obviously pleased as punch with how fast sheets come out (even from powered-down state) and how great they look. And while I know toner can be pricey, there are so many discount folks who sell these carts, that even if the quality is slightly less or fewer pages are yielded, it's still extremely affordable. I found a 2-cartridge pack for $25, making laser printing far, far cheaper per page than my previous ink-jet (even at discount ink-jet prices). Five stars.Printer Configuration -- I have seen some people talking about power down/power up issues, but I'm not sure what they are referring to (perhaps a flaky wireless connection?) This printer prints very quickly even out of a powered-down state, and I like that it shuts off when idle for a time to save on power. No complaints as long as the wireless signal is strong (since I assume things degrade in this regard if the connection is marginal). Five stars.Printer Form Factor -- I really like the small footprint on this. The printer looks a bit goofier when all the input and output brackets are unfurled, but it is still a handsome piece. I like how it looks, and I think it will fit wherever we need it to. And as I mentioned earlier, the power cord does not have a large "wall wart", so any place there is a wireless connection and a power outlet is a place you can put this printer for use throughout the house. Five stars. In summary, if HP would get an easier way to get this up and running on Mac OSX Lion, five stars would barely contain my enthusiasm. But having just about no way at all for that to

I first installed the latest printer driver on my Mac from the HP web site, then plugged in the printer and powered it on. I hooked up the USB (a USB cable, supplied in the box, is required for initial setup) and the printer was not recognized by the Mac. So I power cycled and it was recognized.I ran the HP Firmware Upgrade Utility to flash the firmware so the printer will work with AirPrint devices like my iPad. The printer did not show up as a valid device. on the iPad Then I noticed that the blue wireless networking light on the printer was not on. So wireless would not work.I tried following the instructions by By R. Ruiz to add wireless networking, but they failed at the step9. Click the HTML CONFIG buttonThe web page would not display, so I could not proceed with the steps. This means I would be stuck using this as a USB printer, not wireless.Fortunately, I had a Windows 7 laptop. I plugged in a USB cable. Automatic setup did not work as advertised, so I inserted the driver CD and installed from there. I requested a wireless setup and did the steps manually just to be safe. It confirmed my SSID, and it asked for my network password. It then installed the driver and the blue light on the printer turned solid blue. I unplugged USB and printed a test page. It worked.Back to the Mac, I replaced its USB cable then went into Print & Scan preferences under Settings. The USB printer was defined there. But I wanted wireless. So I followed R. Ruiz's instructions again, and got past step 9. It turns out that wireless was already setup. This was confirmed by going to1) Click Open Print Queue2) Click on Open Printer Utility (this displayed the printer's web page)3) Click on the Networking tab4) Click on Wireless link on leftAt that point, I was able to confirm settings that had been established during the Windows 7 install.I then5) Clicked OK on the print queue window6) Closed the print queue7) Deleted the printer from the Print & Scan list by highlighting it and clicking the '-' button8) Clicked the '+' button and selected "Add other printer or scanner"9) Selected "HP LaserJet Professional P1102w" with Kind Bonjour and clicked AddThe printer was set up. I printed a test page from the Mac and it worked. I revisited the iPad and tried AirPrint, and the printer was displayed. I printed from the iPad and it worked, too. (AirPrint probably would have worked once wireless was set up on the Windows 7 machine.)So in summary...wireless setup did not really work on the Mac under Mac OS 10.7, it was only because I had a Windows machine that I could get it to work.Edit...later...I found a procedure that looks like it will allow you to set up wireless on a Mac running Mac OS 10.7. I will summarize it here:1) Power the printer on,2) Go to the Airport icon on the Mac's menu bar and click on it. Select the network associated with the HP printer.3) Go into Safari. Ignore the warning that you are not connected to the Internet. You aren't, instead you are connected to the web server on the printer4) From the Bookmarks menu, select Show All Bookmarks5) Under Collections, s?lect Bonjour6) Double click the HP LaserJet Professional P1102w bookmark7) Click on the Networking tab8) Click on the Wireless link on the left hand side9) Select Infrastructure10) Under Network Name (SSID) click Refresh.11) Select your Network Name by highlighting it and clicking the << button12) Select your Security Mode. Enter your passphrase if you have one.13) Click on ApplyThe web page will disappear. At this point, go to the Airport icon in the menu bar and connect back to your wireless network.Proceed with Software Update (which, in theory, will install the latest printer driver). If that does not work, download and install the latest driver from the HP site.If the printer does not show up under Print & Scan preferences, add it as a Bonjour printer, as detailed above. This should take the Windows laptop out of the mix when installing wireless!

After years of purchasing various inkjet printers that need to be used more often so as to reduce getting clogged nozzles and dried ink cartridge over time, I've been waiting to buy a respectable laser printer for my basic, infrequent printing needs. My first foray is the P1006. It was the most compact laser printer I've ever seen and could practically fit in any small usable space. After over a year of use, I've never encountered a problem with the printer itself. I wouldn't use the printer for months and at times would print pages of documents the next. No hiccups.I use the P1006 wirelessly attached to an Airport Extreme wireless router and with updated Mac OS X and Airport drivers/firmware I've had no problems printing wirelessly on a Mac computer. What I did have problems is the erratic wireless connection from a Sony Vaiio laptop running Windows Vista to the printer via Bonjour. Whenever the printer is turned off and back on, the laptop running Windows OS would see the printer but not be able to print unless I reinstalled the printer via Bonjour. While the Mac computer would be able to find the printer and print wirelessly with no problems. That's why I decided I needed a more stable wireless printing solution for all my devices at home that can print without passing thru the Airport Extreme router as a print server.Enter the HP LaserJet 1102w. It has the exact dimensions and therefore compact footprint of the earlier P1006 model, but with the added feature of built-in wireless printing, faster printing output and a sleeker glossy black colour.PROS:1. Compact footprint - fits anywhere space may be an issue for other laser printers (still needs adequate ventilation)2. Built-In wireless b/g printing solution - compatible with Windows and Mac OS. Apple AirPrint compatible with the latest firmware update.3. Respectable 19 pages per minute print output - obviously not for businesses with high volume requirements, but suitable for home, home/office and small office.4. Auto Energy Saver mode - goes on stand by with the lights turning off when not in use for a specific amount of time that can be set by the user.5. Printer settings accessible via any internet browser (all you need is the printer's address).6. Auto installation with Windows computers upon insertion of USB cable (no need for CD installation).7. USB cable included (short cable only). Helpful for hassle-free installation upon first set up which the software will guide you every step of the way.8. Glossy Black look - elegant and classy look for the modern office9. Cheaper price than the previous models it replaced, but with updated features highlighted above.CONS:1. Comes with sample toner cartridge that prints half the amount than actual replacement cartridge.2. Replacement cartridges will print 1,600 pages to the tune of 2/3 the price of the printer (as of this writing). Depending on the current price of the toner, this effectively puts a high cost of per page printing at $0.04 per page if the cartridge is worth $60.00. While other printers offer the same cartridge cost at least double the printing output.3. Noisy - this is relative of course depending on the user and the environment. Personally it's definitely noisy when powered on as it goes thru it's start up cycle. Printing wise, it's the noise I've come to expect of laser printers.OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:The printer has been set up since day one as a wireless printer and it performs as I've expected with no problems. I never experienced the printer dropping connection with any wireless device that needs it - Windows computer, Mac computer, iPhone. All of these can find the printer and send print jobs successfully even after turning off/on the printer.I've set the printer to go into energy saving stand by mode after 5 minutes of use. The printer lights will turn off to indicate as such, but it doesn't mean the printer has turned off completely. My devices can still see the printer and when I send a print job to it, it springs back into life on it's own. No need for user intervention.Because I don't frequently need to print, the toner cartridge has a longer shelf life and doesn't get clogged nozzles as a result of not printing over time like an inkjet. And because the toner is dry, it doesn't "dry up" the way the ink jet cartridge does. You will need to know that there is a shelf life on laser toner cartridges for the simple fact that the dry ingredients can absorb moisture over time depending on your environmental conditions. Also, if you don't allow ventilation for the printer and it's always seeing constant use then the heat generated by the printer itself can shorten the shelf life of the toner as well. These are factors you have to consider before complaining of the performance of the toner itself.Of course I won't be surprised if HP is constantly finding ways to shorten the shelf life of laser toner cartridges from lesser printing output to having a use by date for better printing quality.Stil

This is a no-nonsense Black and White Laser printer that works with a USB connection; but if you want to print wirelessly from a Mac using OSX 10.8 then stay away from this printer and find something else. I have been using Macs since the early 90's and I could not make any sense of the instruction manual or the online support for wireless printing. I routinely help friends and family setup their Macs, iPhones, routers, and printers, and I was completely baffled by the wireless setup. I don't even think wireless printing is supported under OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, but I'm not sure because I gave up after a few days of trying and went with a USB connection. The Good:1. Small size, but not tiny. The width is small, but this printer is much taller than some new ink jet printers, just look at the pic.2. Fast like a laser printer should be.3. Print quality is about what I would expect from a laser printer. Good and crisp. The Bad:1. The Mac wireless installation section in the included manual is worthless.2. The HP website wireless support pages for Macs are confusing and also worthless.3. Replacement cartridges are apparently expensive and the included cartridge is a not a full one (so other reviews say, this is unproven to me).4. It is not especially attractive, just a glossy black brick that prints.5. The HP LaserJet Utility app that comes with it is a confusing and buggy mess after you install it. Once you find the Printer Utility section there are options for Cleaning Page, Demo Page, Configuration Page, and Supply Status Page. There seems to be an option to display some of the info in a browser window, but sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. The only real way that I can find to see diagnostics is to make a selection and click Okay and it prints the info on a piece of paper. And even then, some of the options don't print anything. The Supply Page and the Demo Page print, the others don't. It's weird.Basically, this printer is for people like me who only want to print return labels, tickets to events, receipts, taxes, and other low volume items without having to worry about the draw backs of ink jet printers. For the price, you should get a lot more. I hope HP releases wireless drivers for OSX 10.8, but as of the writing of this review, I don't think they are available. And don't depend on the wireless instructions in other reviews or on YouTube. I don't think they are for OSX 10.8.

First off, my last printer was an HP which I owned for 8 years and only stopped using after buying a new computer that didn't seem to like the drivers I was downloading to get it to work on Vista. As of last try, the old HP printer still worked fine with XP.As for this printer, it is very frustrating. First off installing it was annoying. It would be great if I could get it to work via wireless, but no matter how much time reading everyone's online instructions, I have not yet been able to get it to work.Consequently, I gave up and have it connected via USB. This is just the first of many frustrations. When I print something, for some reason it first tries to print it wirelessly, resulting in the wireless signal blinking for 20-30 seconds, before it decides to give up and then print via the hard wire connection. Sometimes though, it just hang-ups and the blue wireless light keeps blinking endlessly. I have been able to get around this by manually feeding paper to it.It also hates to print certain types of items. For some reason, it doesn't like Google maps. I generally use IE as my web browser and it refuses to print Google maps from this browser if I manipulate the size of the map through print setup features. I also use Google Chrome and have similar frustrations. One time when running off to a meeting I tried to print directions and fought with the printer for over 10 minutes before drawing out the directions by hand. The print showed up in the "to print" screen, but just kept telling me it was working on it.The next day I was trying to print something else and upon turning it on it randomly decided to print the map from the day before.I also have problems trying to print Adobe Acrobat files. I own Adobe professional software which allows me to create my own Acrobat files from Word and PowerPoint. The printer freaks out over certain files that I try to print. I thought it might be Acrobat that was causing the problem, but I don't have these problems when I take these files to work to print. The only type of files that I don't have lots of problems with are MS Word files and Excel files. I don't recall ever having any major issues with these, aside from the fact that it tries to unsuccessfully print them first via wireless.I have owned the printer since September 2011. I did a fair amount of research before selecting this printer and have always had great results with HP. I frankly don't get it. I wish I could return it or get some explanations but HP support is not very accessible. I don't print a lot from home. If I did I'd be tempted to put a gun to my head.I expect to buy another printer soon, but just hate to toss one that I have owned for just 8 months when my last one lasted 8 years.HP, what is the deal? Where is the quality we expect from a premium brand like yourself?

I am a horribly impatient person, and I tend to get frustrated very easily when things take longer than I expect, or do not go how I have planned. So, when I bought a Yudu machine and tried to print transparencies on our Epson, I just about had an apoplectic fit when I found that the Epson would not print transparencies, and there was no way to trick it into doing so. I spent almost half an hour trying different configurations, schemes, and actions to get it to print, but finally after my husband checked the Epson FAQ page (Question: Will this Epson print on transparencies? Answer: No) I gave up and sat down in a grumpy heap and pouted. My dreams of making myself a faux vintage Peter Gabriel shirt were nearly dashed. My husband, ever the patient man, rolled his eyes and suggested that I look for laser printers, and directed me to Amazon. I was interrupting his gaming with my tantrum, and he figured we could use another printer regardless, to handle our volume of monochrome printing we do monthly. I then began my search.I was determined to buy something cheap, but not too cheap - that would print clearly and sharply, but also had a decent price for replacement toner cartridges. I threw many options at him before finally narrowing it down to this printer and a Brother model. The Brother was substantially cheaper and had good reviews, but couldn't verify if it would print transparencies or not. The HP didn't specifically say that it would, but hinted around at it very generally. So, I decided to take the risk.I ordered it with our prime account, and received it the next day - so the shipping was super duper fast - we hadn't opted to pay for one day. It was packaged well, and easy to set up - it was literally a plug and play, and got itself working so quickly I was rather amazed. (Be aware though that you need a USB cable with it - we luckily had one in our cord stash, but it didn't come with one). Within a few minutes, I was gleefully printing out my proposed tshirt ideas and compiling my Yudu portfolio. It prints fast and clearly, even on transparencies. I was worried about smudging issues since the transparency surface is quite smooth, but there wasn't any smudging, even directly off of the tray. We printed 600 pages of open source rpg manuals as well (all the same evening we rec'd the unit), and it works like a champ. So - it's worth it. It's a great addition to our home office, and absolutely saved the day. Peter Gabriel shirt dream realized! (I will attach a picture as soon as the screen is done burning!)

Updating the below review because I finally found a fix to my wireless problem. I changed the wireless security setting on my wifi router to use "WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]" instead of "WPA2-PSK". WOW, I guess the printer has a problem with the newer version of WPA2. Now it continues to be available even after it goes into powersave mode.Too bad that HP has not posted this solution on their support forums. I stumbled across this solution for a different brand of printer having the same wireless problems and tried it out.Updating to 3 stars because it is a great printer (nice quality printing and fast, never jammed) but the wireless problems were very very frustrating.Reason for 3 stars:The software\driver install is way too large - simple print drivers should not be so big and bloated. Also it does not do automatic duplex (2-sided) printing - it's manual. Toner is expensive. Wifi setup problems very hard to solve if you have them like I did.If you want to install on new devices use the built-in web server on the printer instead of CD or downloading the drivers. Much faster and easier.----------------------------I have had this for 2 years and nothing but problems with the wireless connection. I have 6 computers connected to the network and this printer loses connectivity every time it sleeps. You have to turn on, turn off, turn on, then try printing. Sometimes the only thing that works is unplugging and plugging back in.I am computer literate and did everything suggested by HP - static IP address, changing the wireless channel, updating firmware, etc.Unfortunately you can't stop it from sleeping - that setting only allows 1 minute to 1 hour. No option for OFF.Great printing results. Will KILL your time and productivity if you want to use it wirelessly. I wish I could charge HP for the time I've wasted - would probably be a few weeks worth.

This is HANDS DOWN the worst printer I have ever owned.First off, and most importantly, I could never get it to work wirelessly. I have had friends, family and even technicians from my internet service provider try to help me. I went on HP's website and talked to tech people on the phone until I just gave up and moved the printer to where I could plug in to it every time I used it.In addition, This printer almost never works even plugged in. It constantly has weird communications with my current MacBook Pro and even my wife's HP netbook!!Also, once something goes wrong, it takes a sacrifice to the gods of old to get it to work again. I feel like a little kid blowing in to a Nintendo cartridge all over. I even have a sequence down of turning it on off on off on to get it to stop trying to print the old job over and over even though I had deleted them from the cache on my computer.Last, once you do get it going again it will sometimes still fight you and a while later phantom print a portion of the job you wanted it to do DAYS ago!! There have been times when I look through something I just printed only to find in the job, some coupon my wife had tried to print days earlier. This is so maddening that, besides writing an angry guy review on Amazon, I have started doing jobs the night before I need them just to avoid this printer making me have some kind of Yosemite Sam freakout in the morning. This thing has even made me late to work more than once!!Do not buy this printer!!You have been warned!!!!I have had many many many HP printers at home and work since the mid 90s and I have been relatively happy with the lot of them BUT I will beat this one with a bat the second it runs out of toner!!

I bought this printer for two reasons, wireless printing from my laptop and from my iPhone using AirPrint. After attaching it to my Windows 7 laptop, it started the installation from its own onboard memory just as the instructions said it would. I wanted to set it up as a wireless printer so I selected that option but that is when I started having problems.Because I use MAC address filtering for an extra layer of security, I need to let my wireless router know what the MAC addresses of my devices are so it will allow them to connect. The printer's MAC address is not listed anywhere on the device itself, on any of the documentation or the box. I had to turn off the MAC address filtering to let the installation complete so I could then query the router as to what the printer's MAC actually was. I then added the printer to the 'allowed' MAC addres list and turned MAC address filtering back on.Most people probably don't use this extra layer of security but manufacturers usually have the MAC address printed on a label stuck to the device for those people that need to know what it is. The printer does not have any kind of menu driven display where the information could be found. There may be a key combination to print the configuration page, but, I apologise, I haven't read the instructions to find out.Initially, AirPrint from my iPhone did not work. The phone just could not find the printer. However, I could switch to the wireless network that the printer now broadcasts (if you opted to allow 'Direct print' during installation) and then print your document but that is an extra step and defeats the object of AirPrint.Other reviewers have mentioned that updating the printer firmware fixes this problem so I tried it and it worked. The iPhone now sees the printer without me having to change wireless networks, just like it should.CONCLUSIONSmall footprint, well built, good quality fast prints but a little tricky to set up if you use MAC address filtering on your wireless router. AirPrint works really well but an update to the printer's firmware was needed first. 4/5 stars.

It seems that this unit is not immune to the various driver and network issues that seem to bewoe nearly every HP printer for home and office. This unit is the upgraded version of the 1006P which is discontinued. The 1102w is wireless which is nice in concept but can cause problems. We have about 6 or 7 of these around the offices for the past two years. Most are shared and every now and again, when someone prints, it goes to the wrong printer. It doesn't lock the print spool like its predecessor would when it runs out of paper in the middle of a job, but it will have occasions when it does get a job jammed in there and you have to manually clear the spool or restart the machine. When trying to connect over the network, these things seem to want to broadcast their own SSID which can be confusing when trying to connect to them when there's more than one.On the plus side, it does print fast and the quality is good. It takes a decent range of paper types and there's no bleed because it's laser (although be prepared to pay for those cartridges). Rarely have had issues with paper jams and it holds up well. Black color is better than the old silver and gray of the previous model. One problem is using non OEM cartridges. It (like pretty much all HP printers) is VERY fussy about what type of cartridge is being used. All around, an excellent B&W desktop printer that's decently priced, but be prepared to deal with driver/network issues when they occur.

I've had HP printers in the past and I used to swear by them. Once upon a time they used to be good printers but not any more! Prior to buying this printer I had an HP ink jet that died after a year and that should have warned me about HP printers. Due to my failure to realize that this brand is inferior to what it used to be I made the mistake of purchasing this HP laser wireless printer. I have spent a total of 9 days so far with at least a dozen different HP techs; the average call time being two and a half to 3 hours each time. After a week of this a tech said the wireless radio light must be broken and they were going to send me a refurbished replacement. This printer is only 6 months old! It worked fine on my old Vista laptop but I had to replace the laptop when it died and have been trying to get the printer to work on a new Windows 7 laptop. The refurbished printer came from HP three days ago and after talking to three more techs, it is still not connected wirelessly!!!! Last tech I talked with said he had to research the problem and would call me back in a couple of days. A couple of days have passed and no call back yet. When I finally call them back I will bet money that it will be more of the same with no solution. The printer does not recognize the wireless signal from the router and just continues trying to connect unsuccessfully in an endless loop. I used to love HP printers but after this nightmare I will never buy another HP printer. This printer is a piece of crap and HP techs don't seem to know squat. They can't seem to problem shoot and just keep repeating the same useless procedures over and over again. Be warned and look for some other brand printer or you're likely to end up like me with stress and tension and no resolution to the problem.UPDATE:: About a week after writing the above information, I finally got the problem solved with the help of a female HP tech from Canada. She was able to come up with a solution to the problem that at least 15 other HP techs were unable to discover. I pass this on to others if you are having the same problem.I am using Win7 64bit. It seemed that the computer would extract the driver files but would not install them thereby keeping the computer from recognizing the printer. The solution was to uninstall Windows installer and reinstall it, then turn off and reboot the computer. After doing that, the computer went on to install the driver files and the set up went on from that point like a charm.I am pleased to say that the printer is now working like it should. If you are having a similiar problem with printer installation, you might want to give this a try. Good luck.

I really wanted to like this little printer. It's shiny, has a small footprint, and would be a nice companion to my All-in-One machine that is also an HP. I wanted a laserjet monochrome machine to balance the usage of my color inkjet -- tired of constantly replacing cartridges. I consider myself a pretty expert techie geek and need the convenience of wireless and mobile printing -- using HP ePrint. There is no LCD so wireless setup requires you to connect your computer to the printer using the USB cable that's included. It's actually very easy but I mention it here because on my All-in-One, I set up the printer using the LCD which I find to be MUCH easier. I work from home and need to be on VPN all day long. As with any wireless printer, you cannot be on VPN and also print wirelessly at the same time. While on VPN, I get around this by sending as email to my @hpeprint.com account. It took this printer a half hour to print a 200K PDF document -- no images, just text. I think is excessively long. In general, I found the @hpeprint.com service to be much, much slower for this printer than it is for my all-in-one. When I'm not connected to my VPN and print wirelessly, the speed of the machine is AWESOME. The quality of the printouts is awesome as well. For that, I definitely give it three stars. Just be forewarned that this might not be the optimal solution if you are a heavy user of the HP ePrint service or printing from mobile devices via the ePrint service.

I purchased the P1102W with the intention of upgrading my printing quality. The printer had a wireless communication problems and firmware issues making the set up impossible and results intermittent. I am convinced the design is the problem. Especially because of all the odd solutions they were recommending such as a fixed IP, filling in all the WEP password boxes with the same info, reinstalling it 5 or more times, not being recognized as a device by widows. (after firmware updates). It really should work as described without all the band aids. While I understand there are problems with products from time to time and gave them every opportunity to correct it I have to tell you that HPs tech support was awful. They spent more money trying to fix it than to simply replace it. I believe they know they could not get a new one working either. This is not the same HP I learned to trust over the years. After I spent a tremendous amount of time with them to try and get the product working I was told that it probably needed replacement and that only a level 2 tech could do that. They were to contact me within 24-48 business hours. Over a week later no contact and no supervisor to speak to. I contacted them again and all I got was an email 4 days later with a "suggestion" to make it work. I threw the printer in the dumpster and bought the networked P1606dn networked model. Install went completely fine in all my windows PCs and Airprint worked instantly for my apple mobile devices. Avoid the P1102W product until they can get the bugs worked out or replace it. The P1606dn is a little more money but can print on both sides of the paper and is a much better built product. Unfortunately it is not wireless but you can always count on copper wires to not loose contact. :-)

This review was originally about Mac issues, but see the update at the end if you're a PC person. I **Update: I finally reached a knowledgeable person at HP, who informed me that they don't have a WiFi driver for Lion yet (29 Aug 2011).**When installing this printer on a Mac, everything is not automatic as it is on a PC, which requires no CD. The Mac instructions say to use the CD or download the latest installation file. My installation attempted to use the current (Aug 27, 2011) installation package downloaded from HP. It was for OS X, and not specifically for Lion. Online installation instructions differ from the quick-start guide (for Mac) that came with the printer. The quick-start guide states that, when installing from the CD, you will be prompted as to whether you want to use WiFi. (Installation also requires that you temporarily connect to the computer with USB.) Running the downloaded package, there is no prompt. The printer automatically installs as a USB device and shows up as an active printer. If you want to use a USB cable there is no issue. One reason for choosing the printer was that it had WiFi. I found a procedure on the HP site for installing on the Mac. The procedure failed. I called HP and they gave me the Apple Care number! **As I said above, I called again and reached a more knowledgeable person, who said there is no Lion WiFi driver yet. He said to go to HP.com and sign up for e-mail notification of driver updates. Based on the competance of the guy I spoke to, I'm raising my rating from two to three stars. The printer works fine in USB mode. WiFi is the problem.I have used cheap HP B&W laser printers before. They tend to be quick and reliable, and they are relatively reasonable on toner cost. My complaint is HPs unwillingness to keep the installation software and drivers current. I have a 4-year-old model that has been rock solid. HP does not even have a Lion driver for it, and they have no intention of ever providing one. Bottom line: if you're a Mac user who likes to keep up with the latest OS, your HP printer may have a limited lifetime due to HP policy. I'm sure that HP will eventually provide what is necessary for Lion WiFi installation. But the next printer model change may spell the end of Mac support for the discontinued model. This is not, BTW, the case for PC drivers, which are kept current much longer. Don't expect a "no customer left behind" policy from HP.**Update** I now have two of these and have them installed on Win7, Vista, and XP machines as well as Mac Lion (still via USB). The printers are all working well. I have lately run into problems with HP not keeping drivers current for Win7. They have a work-around: Run driver software in Vista SP2 compatibility mode. When you do that, you get in trouble connecting via LAN to printers shared from other computers, even when doing PC to PC. The bottom line is this: HP makes the most reliable, long-lasting printer hardware around, but it doesn't matter because they don't keep the software current. You may be out of luck when the next OS rolls around.

A year and a half ago, I bought HP Officejet Pro 8500, an all-in-one desk jet printer. I don't have school-aged kids and I do most of my printing at work. So I used the printer sparingly. I learned that when I did need it, the ink would dry up! And a full set of HP 940 cartridges costs around $85! Shame on you HP! I read somewhere that the inkjet printer fluid is the most expensive substance in the world per ounce. It is even more expensive than gold! I tried researching on ways I can refill the cartridges but I didn't find a good or reliable way. I decided that I was done being gouged by HP for the cartridges so I researched on the internet and it seems like the cheapest way to go was to just get your picture prints from various local or online stores and then print your home stuff on a laser printer.I then tried to research on wireless laser printers. I know that HP being HP, it would still try to gouge me on the toners and in fact, the toner for this printer is expensive. So I decided that one of my criteria for my new printer is that I'm either able to find an easy way to refill the toner or find a good third party compatible toner. And guess what, there are 4.5 star rated third party toners in Amazon for this specific printer. A two-pack costs around twenty bucks. TWO TONERS FOR 20 BUCKS! I was also looking at an entry-level Brother wifi enabled laser printer. That one had automatic duplexing and I actually liked it better but it did not have a highly rated toner from a third party. Isn't it sad though that the main criteria I had to use was a availability of refills or a non-branded toner?I purchased 1102w and was pleasantly surprised about its small footprint. I wasn't thinking about it when I first bought the printer but I realized that this unit also is compatible with Apple's Air Print. Sadly, the latest firmware was not installed so I had to download a firmware update utility from HP. And I had to delete the printer as a wireless printer and add it again as a wired printer because I read online that you can not update the firmware wirelessly. But after updating the firmware, I was able to print from my iOS devices. This is a nice bonus. We are an Apple household and I knew from other reviews that HP didn't document wireless printing (on OS X) very well. Fortunately, I just followed the steps outlined in the October 30, 2010 Amazon review by R. Ruiz "Bohemian Bon Vivant" and I was able to set-up wireless printing in OS X Snow Leopard in no time. I am not sure if this will work for OS X Lion.Overall, the HP 1102w is an inexpensive wireless printer that has excellent (and and cheap) third-party toners available.

I have always been a big fan of HP printers. Purchased this printer in April 2012 and it initially installed very easily and worked well. Unfortunately, it soon became obvious that there was something wrong. The printer consistently looses contact with the wireless network when inactive for a week or so. It has been impossible to determine a reliable way to get it to reconnect. HP has been unresponsive with technical help saying that it must be the router. As an IT professional, I can say that it is not the router( Verizon FIOS). The best I can tell, the web server in the printer randomly fails to initialize on restarting the printer. I can ping the printer but no other contact with the printer works. After restarting from power on, is takes hours for the printer to finally get the web server running and become visible over Bonjour so that airprint works. After days or a week or so, the printer looses network connectivity again and it starts all over to get it back up. This one is going to recycle and I will be looking for another vendor.

I just received my printer at 4:45pm EST and I am able to print to my printer via Google Cloud Print and HP ePrint from my Froyo tablet. It's now 5:00pm EST. Perhaps one of the most painless setup procedures from a printer manufacturer that I have ever experienced.Setup was very, very easy (child-like easy) if you take the trouble to download the User Manual from the HP website. Yes that thing with all the words in it...Use the CD that shipped with the printer and you will get an option for "Wireless Configuration" in the HP Program Group of your Start menu when you are done. Yes you can print both from USB and your 802.11 router at the same time from different devices.*If you are MAC address filtering on your router, you print the printer's network config page from 'printer properties --> Preferences --> Services --> Print Information Pages', services tab, if you need to add your printers "MAC Address" to your router. When you run the Wireless configuration it will ask you if you want to use "Ad Hoc" or "Infrastructure", if you have a Wireless Router, you want the latter option "INFRASTRUCTURE". Ad hoc is ONLY if you do NOT have a router and is a much more involved set-up. 99% of folks out there, if they are going to print wirelessly anyway, most likely also have a wireless router to get on the internets.Set-up took me all of 15 minutes. If the terms "MAC Address" and "Ad Hoc" are confusing you, and you are not sure what that funny looking box next to you with the "flashy lights" and "ears" is, then go to the HP website and look under Support for "Wireless Printing Center". It will help you out.As I am familiar with the Leviathan that is HP, I reserve the right to return and revise my comments as I see fit. The problem with HP printers, for anyone who has been around the block with them before, isn't their set-up now, which it looks like they have finally un-hosed with their new 'Smart-Install' program, the problem usually is ink and drums. So we'll see how that goes but for right now there is absolutely nothing precluding 5 stars for this product.02/05/2012 Update: No problems so far. Went through the included cartridge a little quick. Have since changed the default output print resolution to "FastRes 600" and checked "Economode" and started a new, thoroughly shaken, ink cartridge. I have to print quite a bit in the coming weeks so I will report how long it lasts here...03/23/2012 Update: Since switching to Economode I have printed > ~1600 pages and I am still going strong on one new HP cartridge.4/21/2012 Update: "Economode" is definitely the way to go here. I think I have more than doubled the output from the initial cartridge out of the box. I estimate the first cartridge out of the box lasted for ~600 prints on the regular, Fastres 1200 dpi, setting without "economode" enabled.

This printer worked fine out of the box. The smart install worked fine and I had wireless printing! That is until I changed the wireless security code on my router. As soon as I did that, the printer would not connect to the network. Ok, that's understandable, so I hooked up the USB cable and went into the printers settings to update the printer's security code. There was no way to do this. I found menues for updating the wireless configuration, but it stated it could not find the printer because it was no longer on the network! I could not get the Smart Install configuration. So I deleted all of the drivers, and decided to just start over. Thus began a 6 hr journey of going through menue's re-installs, etc. and my conclusion, as shared by many others, is that you CAN NOT reconfigure this printer's wireless settings, once installed. So I borrowed a friends XP computer and ran the driver on it for the first time. The smart install came up ok and I was once again able to set up the printers wireless configuration. All was good until I accidently pushed and held the wireless button one day, instead of the power button (trying to get a configuration sheet) and dumped the wireless settings in the printer! ARH!!! I tried using my friends computer again to try to re-install it, but, the driver, once installed on a computer will NEVER let you reconfigure the printer's network settings again! As far as I can tell, you HAVE to find ANOTHER computer that has never had the driver before! Well, I'm out of computers so I guess there is no way to get this printer on my wireless network again. I've searched the HP site and have found no help for this problem. In spite of the many compliants regarding this problem, no one seems to be taking any action to fix this horrible printer driver. Seems like poor quality control with this company. Buyer beware! I had to resort to going out any purchasing a long USB cable to continue using this printer. Oh yea, and if you use Vista, I couldn't get the double sided printing to work. Works ok with Windows 7 and XP, but not my Vista machine. This was a disappointing purchase.

I was a little concerned whether or not this product would work for me, but since all other AirPrint compatible printers I could find were multi-function inkjet printers (not what I wanted), I took a chance on this one.I was worried because the specs in the Amazon listing don't mention AirPrint support, though it is listed on the Apple web site as being compatible. Apparently, older models did not support AirPrint without a firmware update. My printer's firmware was up-to-date, and AirPrint worked as soon as the normal printer setup process was completed.Setup took about 15-20 minutes. Most of that time was spent un-boxing, installing the toner cartridge, reading the installation instructions, etc. I had to connect my Win 7 laptop to the printer via a USB cable during the setup process, but I was able to disconnect when I was complete. I would describe the setup process as being easy, assuming you take 5 minutes to read the installation instructions.I am able to print wirelessly from my Windows 7 laptop and from my iPod Touch running iOS 5.1.1. After completing the HP ePrint setup process (also easy), I was able to print an email with all attachments by forwarding it to the printer's ePrint email address, and my wife was able to print from hundreds of miles away using her iPhone 3 (though this didn't work the first time, as the HP ePrint service thought it was spam and "discarded" the print job, and she didn't seem to be able to get any attachments to print).Apparently, this can also be used with a service called "Google Cloud Print". I'm not yet familiar with that service, but I did successfully receive a printed test page after linking my printer to my Google account.I've only had the printer now for about an hour, but so far I am very impressed, and this is actually the first printer I have owned that I thought was "neat".

I bought a laser printer because I was tired of wasting money on inkjet cartridges. I rarely/never need to print anything in color, and I don't print often. The last several times I printed a few pages on my old inkjet printer I've had to put in new inkjet cartridges, because the ink had dried up or clogged up. They were very expensive pages to print, plus the aggravation. So, being familiar with laser printers at work, I started looking for an inexpensive home laser printer. This is the one I bought, and I have been happy with it. It works when I turn it on. That sounds so basic, but that's really what you want your printer to do every time--work. Since it works with toner instead of liquid ink, there is no ink to dry up or clog up on you. My first printer many years ago was a Hewlett Packard. It lasted seven years, and I printed a lot more in those days. Hopefully this one will last that long, too!I had no setup issues and it nicely works with my wifi, providing me the ability to print from wherever I am in the house, as long as I've turned on the printer..
