My Smarthub 2 can't cover the whole house and reviews of this indicated it had excellent range. Disappointingly, it still beat the D-Link X1860.
This is a real shame.
The hardware and speed is great and being an AX router, would have future proofed my network.
use tech support yet.
The dual core helps and is noticed when using multiple devices
#Thank you
Set-up didn't go smoothly. Despite being connected to my modem (Virgin Hub 3.0, switched to modem mode) via ethernet, the D-Link wouldn't register that it had an internet connection. It turns out that you have to boot up and connect the devices in a very specific sequence for the router to see the modem. Nothing about that in the (minimal) instructions.
I did, eventually, get everything working and was initially impressed with the speeds and the WiFi range I was seeing, both of which were significant improvements on my Virgin Hub, when in router mode (although that was no more than I expected, really, having gone to the trouble and expense of buying a dedicated router).
Within a few days, however, things started to go wrong. Our Apple devices (we've got iPhones and a MacBook as our main family computer) would drop the network connection. It was visible from the devices, but they would connect for just a few seconds then drop off. Alternatively, (this particularly with the MacBook), the device would constantly ask for the WiFi password, even though it was a saved network.
I fiddled endlessly with the settings on the router (via the web interface - you can't really do anything with the setting from the app), but the only way to get the Apple devices stable on the network again was to turn the router completely off and back on again.
One of the problems with this router is that the settings you can change, even via the web interface, are actually pretty limited. Amazingly, for a modern router, you can't switch off the WPA security - you have to have the network use both WPA and WPA2 simultaneously. And you can't select AEP encryption - you're stuck with TKIP encryption. I hadn't appreciated these limitations when I bought the product. Apple devices prefer AEP encryption and (at least in latest versions of their operating systems) any network that uses WPA is classed as "Weak Security" (hardly surprising, given that WPA was superseded by the more secure WPA2 way back in 2006!).
As I say, I persisted with the router for several months, not least because (to be fair) it did provide a stable and much improved network for Windows devices (which we also use) and the speeds which my son wants for his XBox. I contacted D-Link but they couldn't offer any explanation for the problems we were having with Apple devices. They advised a factory reset - which I did, with no improvement. So, having got utterly fed up with having to restart the router several times a day, I gave up and returned it.
The replacement will definitely not be from D-Link.
