I own a Nikon D300 dslr which I use semi professionally, an ixus 960 IS as a small carry around, and recently acquired a G10. I shan't reiterate all its assets as that's already been done by other reviewers. I'd like to add however, that having previously owned the G7 and the G9, that this is beyond a shadow of doubt the finest G series compact that Canon have ever made. It's not perfect. No small camera can be, because the sensor size limits that. So the caveat is this. Use the G10 at its lowest iso setting, with a pocketable mini tripod where necessary, and you won't tell the difference between an A3+ print produced with a pro dslr and the G10. Up to iso 200 the same applies to A4 size prints. iso 400 is fine for A4 prints with a little noise ( minor speckling ) and iso 800 and above go from bad to incredibly worse. That doesn't put me off since there's no other compact out there that's significantly better, not even the legendary Fuji F30/F31FD now discontinued. Neither is the panasonic LX3 as good since it completely misrepresents red in the colour spectrum, which is why I sold mine. Therefore, so long as you use the G10 within its best operating parameters ie between iso 80 and iso 200, going to iso 400 when necessary and avoiding iso 800 and above except for max size 4x6 prints, you'll get better results than would be obtainable from any other compact out there at time of review, and so I unhesitatingly give it 5 stars. As a first camera, there is a learning curve but the effort will be richly rewarded!
I have sinced tried another LX3 and also an LX5, and currently own a GF1, all panasonics. None of them had a problem with reproduction of red in the colour spectrum and therefore I'm confident that my previous experience with another LX3 was a 'one off'.

I liked my G9 so much I decided to put that one on e-Bay and pay the extra for the G10 to see whether I could obtain even better results. (Yes, I know the G11 is imminent but I am not convinced that is worth THAT much extra cash to perfect something that seems pretty perfect to me!) I wanted to buy the G10 as it appeared to be a 'fine tuning' on the G9. Most important for me was the more convenient manual overriding of settings. I won't bore you with the details but I rate this even better than my G9 which was excellent. Results seem even better. I think the G11 is being desgined to appeal to the true professional who wants the ultimate compact; the G10 is more than fine for us mere mortals! ;-)

As an enthusiastic photographer I wanted a good quality, versatile compact for those times when I didn't want to lug around my DSLR equipment. I read the G10 reviews and it seemed to offer what I was looking for and so took the plunge.
The camera feels sturdy and handles well although some of the controls are a little too easy to engage accidentally. The range of options available to me were impressive and I am quickly finding my way around them. One big minus though, and the reason why I have knocked off one star, is the lousy viewfinder. It offers very restrictive viewing (feels like about 80%)and suffers from distortion. Frankly I find it almost unusable and I cannot believe that Canon has let this slip out of its stable with such a poor design defect.
Results are superb providing you don't try to push sensitivity above 200 ISO as beyond that noise does start to become a bit of a problem. Exposure is good and automatic focussing is accurate. Great lens too.
Overall I am extremely pleased with the G10 although it is a pity that I can't open the RAW files in my Elements 5 and bundled software is really rather basic. Yes a great if somewhat flawed camera but one I will no doubt enjoy for some years to come

A quality camera. One feels this immediately on picking it up. It feels very well constructed- and that is how it turns out. I have not been able to find any fault with it. On the other hand it probably takes many months for an amateur to discover all its capabilities- a point that I have not yet reached.

Well I cannot agree with the previous review. This camera is no where near as good as a DSLR even on the lowest ISO setting. Dynamic range is the main drawback. expose for the shadows and you are going to get way blown out highlights in all but the flattest light. My Nikon P5100 had much more dynamic range, lower pixel count and produced much better exposed, cleaner pictures; if you could wait ten minutes for it to focus. I bought a G10 to replace that and, yes the focusing is super fast and spot on but I am really disappointed with the quality as a backup for a DSLR. My D300 beats this camera to a pulp and is actually not much bigger or heavier to carry! If you can't afford a DSLR then this camera is probably one of the best compacts around but if you are serious about photography don't expect to produce many masterpieces with this rangefinder wannabe.
I am not sure about the colour accuracy problem but I have seen some comparision pictures with the LX3 on the net and it seems that camera comes closer to a DSLR's dynamic range proving pixel count does not a camera make. Also look on Flikr for LX3 samples that make me feel foolish for choosing a G10 over an LX3 cos it looked sexier.

The Canon PowerShot G10 Digital Camera has a mass of features and produces excellent images. I am sure that it can do more than I will ever discover but many of its features are obscured by the unhelpful way the was the camera manual is written and supplied.
The 32 page booklet supplied is only adequate if you want little more than to put in the battery and shoot in auto mode. For those wanting more information a CD is supplied containing a 291 page manual, which I found would not answer my questions about transferring RAW images, and which when printed came out as small pages in the middle of A4 sheets. What is needed is a manual that will guide users through the camera features not this mass of information structured in a way that only Canon technicians could find logical.
All this would have been acceptable if the Canon website had provided interactive tuition for users. It does not.

I have owned this camera just over a month and I can honestly say it is the best gadget ive ever bought. I am a complete novice when it comes to cameras and photography but want to change this and this camera is perfect for that. It takes absolutely fantastic pictures without any thought or expertise, but comes with enough features to impress experts. See my photos of sheffield park above.

Canon PowerShot G10 14.7MP Digital Camera - 5x Optical Zoom, 3 inch PureColor LCD II Viewfinder - BlackA little beauty. I have an Olympus E3 and all the lenses but the Canon accompanies this lot perfectly particularly when you do not want to lug about weighty gear. The results are amazing for a "compact". Its retro styling is very pleasing to the eye and draws admiring glances. The only downside is beyond ISO400 the quality appears to drop quite dramatically but I was aware of this before buying and is therefore neither a problem or a reason to reduce my marking to 4*. For the quality photos this gem provides, the ease of use and the control you can have using manual I would highly recommend this camera.

Before buying the G10 I had previously owned a Canon SLR and a G9. The G9 was wrecked when I fell into a river and the G10 was the logical replacement. I have found it to be an exceptional product, with a few significant improvements over the G9, notably a dedicated dial for exposure control and the provision of Canon's own processing software DPP. I use it in RAW mode and have found the image control and processing to be highly flexible. In fact so reliable and convenient is the camera that I take it with me everywhere, and whilst it is not a replacement for my SLR for dedicated trips (the necessarily limited aperature range is a limitation), its sheer convenience means that I take more photos because I have it with me always.
For those who are dedicated Canon users and who appreciate the benefits of capturing RAW images, this is an excellent product.

I am not a novis but the user guide is almost useless. There was no memorey card in the pack,so, I had to wait to go to town before I took the first picture. Cannon must think we are either masters or a bunch of stupid people. It was not acheap camera, fantastic details, rough appearance and it take me a while before I can take a very good picture. The pack is no good for the novis. I have my dissapointment!

This is an excellent camera and has been described fully by those who have already applauded its performance, style and quality so I won't repeat what they have said. I've been doing a lot of research recently where I have required good macro photography - pages and pages of old documents. I have to say the G10 hasn't let me down once - just a bit of advice on this is to go for a good hi-res memory digital card. Just one more thing - the first G10 developed a fault - a bloom spot on the outer lens glass. Any authorised Canon dealer would have repaired it under warranty. I asked Amazon for its advise and without any quibble they replaced it for new. And that was outside the 30-day returns policy. Well done Amazon!

Nice smooth zoom, under/over-exposure control as knob and not as menu item and the same for "film speed" is a great blessing.
Feels right. Compared to my Canon A80, quick to turn on and quick to grab the image.
Shown to two friends far more knowledgeable and experienced than I and they are impressed. Unlike old A80, I have had to print the 300 page manual onto 75 A4 sheets, double-sided, at A5 size per page and have it spiral bound. Worth it.
For ordinary pictures, with 14.7 Mpix, the digital zoom is useable, whereas with the A80 I only ever used the optical zoom.
Doesn't come with any memory card or small internal memory just to try it.
Make sure you have an SDHC card.

I would just like to say what wonderful service i got ,ordered this camera for my husband it arrived and was faulty,contacted Amazon a new camera arrived the next day ,the faulty camera was picked up the following day ,well done Amazon.By the way my husband is thrilled with the camera.

On a trip to New Zealand I took a still camera and a digital camcorder. I was very pleased with the vivitar still camera but less so with the other brand camcorder as the screen had been a bit difficult to see and the editing software was not easy to use. I therefore decided to try to find a camera that would take decent stills and respectable movies - that do not need highly specific software! I researched carefully and settled on the G10. I am delighted - it looks the business - I am pleased with the retro look and will put up with the slight additional bulk for the sake of the super performance.The wide angle lense is a joy. I would recommend it to anyone who is just a bit more serious about their photography.

This is my backup camera, also use a Canon 40D dslr. As previous correspondents have noted the weight and size factor are important but so too is the sheer quality of the images produced. Don't be fooled by the size of this machine , it really does do what it says it can do. However it is not a beginners camera although you can set it up to be a real point & shoot camera.
Some of the in camera tricks it can provide are actually quite worth having. If you want sharp sepia or black and white this little camera can do it.
I use it as a back up when out doing other photo work and have used it as such at weddings and used the images from it. Have had the G6, the G9 and probably what comes after this Canon camera. It won't suit everyone but hey c'est la vie!

Great feel of a solid camera. Knurled knobs make exposure compensation or Iso settings easy and very positive. Large screen makes it easy to check focus. Like the Raw ability. Very happy with the camera I carry it everywhere.

Having only used average consumer cameras before purchasing this, I was looking for something more versatile to get my teeth into. I'm an amateur photographer, so I needed something that would get some nice "arty" shots, but I also take reference photographs for 3D modelling and texture work, so I needed a camera that produced a faithful image.
The G10 easily ticked both of those categories, with manual mode great for fine tuning exposure and aperture, and RAW recording was the icing on the cake. The fast switch-on time (just over a second) is also great, it helped me out the other day taking pictures of fast-moving trains in that I could spot the train and quickly flick the camera on, rather than standing wasting the battery for half an hour in case one went past.
All in all, a great camera and a purchase that I don't regret one bit (a rarity for me!)

After much research I decided that the Canon Powershot G10 was the one to buy. I got hold of this little beauty back in October 2008 and have been using it daily as my "carry with me at all times" camera. It's not the smallest of cameras by any stretch of the imagination but it's still small enough to be put in pocket or bag without any trouble and the many features it offers more than outweigh it size.
Having had a couple of month's use of this camera I can only applaud it's capabilities and excellent image quality. If switched to full auto mode it wont let you down - but it does offer the more adventurous or experienced photographer full manual control so you can take the most creative of photos. The macro facility is great with focussing possible to within 1-1.5 cm of the target.

This camera is just lovely, really love the stitch function to get those panoramas..the start up time is super quick as is the reaction time. although it's not too fast with the face recognition.. I was expecting to be able to point and shoot with the sun infront and get the flash to work every time with the face recognition but I'm new to this camera, maybe there's something I could be doing to improve the function. It worked sometimes but quite a few shadow face shots too. LOve the wide angle and LOVE the amount of time it stays charged up! Took 800 photos and films and messed around with it loads before it needed charging and even then it hadn't run out of juice completely even after 2 weeks of every day use! I'm not easily pleased with gadgets but I wouldn't be without this camera it's on the way to being perfect and I get the feeling that it's the technology that's not 100% there yet with things like face rec rather than the camera not being good enough. I can't imagine anyone not loving this cam it's a great piece of kit.

Wouldnt know if this product is good as I ordered 20th july, dispatched 21st and it is not fri 31st july and operator reckons 6th aug!!! If it doesn't arrive by the 6th I would get one 1st class post by 10th...

I really rate this camera. We went for this, wanting a distinct step up from our compact digital Fuji, after considering an SLR. The bulkiness of an SLR put us off, but we wanted similar performance. The G10 responds really quickly when photographing moving subjects. The build and feel is reassuringly chunky. The dials on top are old-school clunky, like on my old Olympus OM2. The range of features is mind-bogling, but some of the basic settings are quite easy to navigate. The screen is big and bright, but stands slightly proud of the camera back, so I have covered it with a screen protector. The camera is rather expensive compared to some of the competition, but this tight Yorkshireman is happy with it.

I have used SLR cameras for 50 years always with three or more Lens. This Canon G10 is as good in all aspects and better in its results on picture definition The combination of Lens quality and automated ISO settings and the 14.5 MP makes this possible .This is the way forward for camera design.Small in size but powerful with the same specification as the the SLR range.

I needed a compact camera to compliment my SLR so I was very careful with my selection. There were several other cameras I considered but, having read all the reviews, I decided on the Canon. Since buying it, I haven't put it down. I carry it everywhere just in case. The quality of the build is excellent. The pictures it takes are sharp. The range of functions is fantastic. This camera has produced some of the best photographs I have every taken, especially the candid shots in Black & White. Of course, I haven't tried any of the other cameras to compare but if they can beat this one I would be amazed.
