Burn the DD-WRT open source router software without a problem. And I am able to get it running as a wireless bridge to my greenhouse's Arduino microcontroller with eithershield. The greenhouse is in the yard 50 feets from the dlink dir655 wireless N router, the signal strength is about 60%.

This router works great, but only when I have it set to "Wireless G Only". This was my first foray into the Wireless N market, and I found the connection to be terribly unstable: it would drop as frequently as every 10 minutes.Another problem is that there's very little documentation with the router. So if you have a problem, good luck fixing it. Would it be so difficult to throw in some FAQs or even a troubleshooting guide?I suspect the firmware that comes with it is to blame, but I'm not saavy enough or comfortable enough to use third-party firmware on a router. Furthermore, I shouldn't have to. Asus should include software with their products that actually works.I will be returning this router and trying another company's Wireless N router.

The Asus RT-N12 absolutely _does not work_ in repeater mode. Not with the terrible Asus firmware, nor with the dd-wrt firmware. Save yourself a great deal of hassle and stay away from this Chinese piece of junk; stick with known names like Linksys.

I chose this router for its value and based on the many positive reviews here on Amazon.There were a few negative reviews, but that happens with all products. I took a chance and jumped in.The result = this is one of the only electronic purchases I have ever had to return. Unfortunately, the router's wireless connection was too unstable for me. Please keep in mind I tried the stock firmware as well as the tomato firmware. With both firmwares, the wireless connection to the router would drop periodically (enough to be annoyed). This occurred on all computers in the house.I used it as a basic wireless router, 2 PCs, 2 gaame consoles, and no gaming/streaming. Too bad, I wanted to like it. At the end of the day, it seemed like the hardware was not stable, but that's just my opinion.

I bought this product for adding wireless as I had just purchased a laptop and we already have a desktop. Everything seemed straight forward , but the signal (once we got it working) kept shutting off. Every 5 minutes or so. We moved the adjuster in back from router to ap and still nothing consistent. Apparently the firmware doesn't work well with windows 7 which is what I have with both computers. So I said ok, two computers that have wired access is still 2 computers online at once... The router said no and I now have a delightful white useless object on my desk reminding me I wasted 39 bucks. grrr.

Avoid this router. I bought it specifically for Wireless "N" capabilities and ASUS's reputation for good quality/price (i.e. laptops). But installation was a nightmare (unclear instructions & interface) even for someone reasonably tech-savvy - had to improvise to get it to work. And once it was up and running, wireless was unbelievably slow - was only able to achieve 1.5mbps on Wifi "N" mode vs. 20mbps with ethernet cable. Even Wifi "G" mode was slow (<9mbps). A google search revealed similar issues with this router's "N" mode speed, but no solution. After spending 5+ hours reinstalling/rebooting/playing with settings & drivers, I gave up and returned the product.Wifi shouldn't be this complicated - my replacement router (Netgear) took <30min to setup and now gives me 20mbps on Wifi "N" mode.

I purchased the N16 with intentions to install tomato usb. The firmware change was easy as pie.I am pleased with the ability of the N16 to support dlna through usb storage.After upgrading Blackberry 8900 phones to version 5 software the Apple Airport Extreme would introduce static noise into UMA calls. After switching from the Airport Extreme to the N16, our UMA calls work without issue on the latest Blackberry 8900 release.

The router is a little challenging to setup initially, but coming from getting 5-20k/s for months on p2p to 500-1.2MB/s is a big difference on the same file. The speed increase doesn't make any sense other than me changing from a linksys dd-wrt router to this one with stock firmware. Wireless has also been great, getting from poor signal to great signal for my down stairs HTPC was a pleasant surprise.update: A few days ago I begin to see the max download speed drop to 600k/s, then a few days later 500k/s. Initially I thought it was my computer's fault, but after running speedtest on all of them, it seems the router was at fault. Then I notice the reboot button on the menu. And that fixed everything. Never knew you have to reboot the router once in awhile.

I got this to use as a wireless repeater to extend my signal to other parts of the house. Can't comment on how that works, since to use it in repeater mode you need to run special software to get to the configuration, once it's in repeater mode. (Router mode is configurable without it from a web page, but in repeater mode, you can't get to these pages anymore.) And of course, the software is only written for Windows.Secondly, this item only has a 2.4Ghz radio, no 5Ghz, which means no channel bonding for those of us with Macs (meaning limited to 130Mbps instead of 300).Thirdly, local ports seems to be 100Mbps instead of GigE.Anyhow, if you don't need any of that stuff maybe this product is good enough. But the old maxim "you get what you pay for" comes to mind...

On paper this router looks fantastic. Affordable, wireless N, USB ports for NAS and printer sharing, supports DD-WRT. However, neither I (a 20-year IT professional) nor Asus tech support could get one to function with the stock firmware. I even sent the first one back and tried another brand new unit. No luck.It wasn't until I flashed the firmware with DD-WRT and spoofed the MAC address that I got it working. (I have comcast cable, btw.) If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then this isn't the router for you.

Can be used as a Router, Access Point or Repeater. This last mode lets the unit also work as a wireless bridge. I have two of these. One is configured as a AP the other as a repeater. This allow me to hook up my TV, Blue-Ray player and HTCP hook up to my home network. Only issue I had was I had to set up two sid id in order for the laptop to connect wireless to first router. The trick was to put the first router in Router mode. Set up two SID then turn to AP as I was not able to add two SID in AP. Yet there both there if you add them in Router mode.When I used only one the Laptop would keep trying to get IP address. After a while I would notice that I would have to unplug one unit in order to reset the connection. I no longer use these routers and have since switch back to my original linksys.

I read the reviews on this device and it appeared to have all of the features that I wanted. I still believe that it has those features, but I could not get it to work properly after 6 hours of trying everything this non-techie knew to do. If you want something that will walk you through the setup, this is not the device for you. If you want to easily find an instruction manual that will explain various functions such as security levels and with which computers the various levels will work, this is not for you. The included manual file on the CD was corrupted, but I still found the one online. Did not help at all.Again, could be a great product, but definitely not for the masses. Already bought a replacement that was set up in 30 minutes, has similar features, and was designed for a non-techie like me.

I also purchased this router based on a recommendation from the team at DD-WRT. I have been using a WRT-54G for several years and have always been a fan of the specialized firmware DD-WRT offers.Let me just say this thing is a night-and-day difference between any Linksys router I have tried. When using the internal web configuration this thing is FAST (both on the stock firmware, and with DD-WRT flashed on it). I was actually pretty impressed with the stock firmware's configuration and could have been happy even leaving that on there, except for a few advanced features which were missing.The presence of two USB ports is also very nice. These can be used for FTP storage, or sharing a printer with special firmware. Highly, highly recommended. For the price this has a substantial amount of horsepower, even on the stock firmware I had no problem running hundreds of connections which used to slow down my Linksys routers.

I use it as a repeater. I didn't use dd-wrt, just used the stock firmware. It was quite easy to setup.I've connected my TV, PS3 using ethernet cable. I connect my Wii, laptop, iPhone over wi-fi. I've had no problems so far.Rosewill RNX-EasyN4 is my main router. (It can also act as a repeater, but I'm currently using it as my router/AP)[...]

A friend told me about this router and I'm glad he did. It works like a champ. The USB ports make this router awesome... I'm using Tomato and have ZERO complaints. Great deal on a great router. Highly recommend with Tomato...

I wasn't the biggest fan of the default firmware, but it worked fine. I put the Tomato firmware on and this little guy just screams! I've had it for a few months and have never had to restart it or anything! I plugged in my 750GB USB external drive to it, and with Tomato it is able to stream videos via upnp to my Xbox 360. The specs on it are just great and it's been the best router I've ever had the pleasure of using. Very happy with my purchase!!

I bought this router to 1) replace a dlink router that was dropping connections consistently 2) for the USB port(s) and 3) to utilize the wireless NAfter a few weeks of everything running perfectly I discovered my Tivo(s) could not connect to get their program listings. They could recognize and connect to the router, they just couldn't download the listings.... After a decent amount of googling I figured I'd try a 3rd party firmware as many people suggested.While not the easiest to install, I got WRT working (couldn't get Tomato working for some reason). The WRT firmware instantly fixed my Tivo problems and everything has seemed to work just fine since.I'd give this 5 stars if the stock firmware was better.

The setup was quick and it did exactly what I needed. I am sharing internet with my land lord and my computer did not have WIFI and also I was using Vonage device. The access point was easy to setup and I have had it running about a month without having to reboot it, unlike previous network devices I have had.

I purchased this device to be used as a repeater. When it arrived, I plugged it in, set the preliminary settings and it just plain worked. I am most satisfied with it and would recommend it to anyone that needs to extend the range of their wireless network. Great product and soooo easy to use.

Agree with other reviews, this is a great router when loaded with DD-WRT. I upgraded from a Linksys Business WRV-200 which had to be rebooted every few days. The Asus was easy to set up (even loading DD-WRT firmware was pretty easy), has good wireless coverage in my 3 story house, and has been stable for over a month since I installed it. Recommended!

Plusses: fast (300 mbps), plenty of RAM (16mb) and memory (4mb), and can be configured as a router or repeater or access point. When upgrading from my Linksys g router there was a noticable jump in performance. The manufacturer's software is not great (drops repeatedly). However the computer savvy can flash the router with DD-WRT which turns the router into quite a powerhouse, on par with models costing twice as much. Still, a novice may find this a daunting task.

This is the first router I've used with DD-WRT so I am not comparing this router with other DD-WRT compatible routers.At this point my RT-N16 is connected to a USB hard drive and, in addition to being a wireless router, is also: - a Samba server for sharing files among Windows and Linux machines on my local network - a backup server for local machines - a subversion code repositoryOne of the nice things about this router, from the firmware flashing perspective, is that the WPS button on the back can be used to tell it to download a new firmware, even if it's otherwise unresponsive. At one point I managed to get my RT-N16's firmware so messed up that I couldn't access it at all. The WPS trick (push the WPS button while plugging it in) saved me from a bricked router.I bought this router specifically for the hardware in the box and the capability to run my own firmware on it, and I have been very happy with my purchase. If that's what you're planning to do, I highly recommend the RT-N16.

this is one of the best routers on the market for techies. you really need to flash with dd-wrt for the full experience as the stock firmware is lousy but probably OK for the average user. Great range, OK speeds, good price.

This is a good router in great price. I flashed it with the DD-WRT firmware in one hour and it boosts wireless range and speed in my 2-story house. I am using it as wireless router though it has switch for AP and repeater. Got it for $30 and am a happy camper.

I didn't do a good job researching this product as I should have. My Asus RT-N16 is notorious for dropping internet connections. The most crazy thing about this product is the wireless connection is faster than using the wired port. Setting up this router requires a bachelors degree in IT. I also thought having two USB ports on the would be useful, but its extremely slow if you want to transfer or download files to it. The most irritating thing is calling tech support with your problem. Everyone there has an attitude for whatever reason and they only want to give you an RMA for return. They have just lost one customer even with all their other products, I used to like this company. When I get this router back, giving it away will make me feel better than keeping it. Don't make the same mistake I made. Amazon needs to review this product themselves. This is only my opinion.

Keeping in mind that this is a $35 router, it is a great deal. Hooks up easy, compact,and functional. I sent mine back, not because there was anything sub-par when it comes to functionality, performance, or features - the unit keeps dropping a signal and would require a reset. At day's end, it is a very inexpensive router and I am not expecting the most feature rich, best quality product - but you cannot beat the price/performance nature of this product. 3 stars only, because I had to send it back - these things happen.

purchased 2 of these and set them up with tomato firmware and wds, some slight problems with inital static ip's that i had set on pc's but got past it and all seems fine now

With dd-wrt this router has every feature you could want. Only limitation is the 4K flash, so you can't put the larger dd-wrt package. But there are enough choices to make it worth the price. Very worth the price.

Yeah it doesn't have Gigabit Ethernet or the final wifi N whatever, but it's an awesome bargain for under fifty. It was my first router I flashed with DD-wrt and it worked awesome. I highly recommend this product as I've been using it for over a month now without any problems.

I'll update this review if I ever get this router set up. For now, I'd give it negative 5 stars if I could. As I write this, I'm on hold with ASUS for the fourth time today. I'm on my third hour trying to set up the router.Apparently there is an "easy" set-up method for this router, but it depends on your web browser recognizing the device automatically right away. If that works, I suspect, you get a review like the one that gave this product 5 stars. If it doesn't work, you go to the device set-up and corporate phone answering service purgatory where I am right now.So far, this product is an infuriating waste of time.

Ok so i bought one a while back to use as a AP (access point) works good with DD-WRT firmware so i bought a 2nd one to use in the other roomas a recever for my xbox 360 and its great and so much cheaper then the official adapter. The router can also move about my house as a recever for other divices. Also using as a repeater is wonder ful i can repeat the signal for my grandmothers on the next street approx.1/8 mile away. Great buy thanks asus and amazon

I use this router for a specialized dd-wrt application. I runs fast and is easy to upgrade to dd-wrt. I particularly like all the storage and memory on this thing. It's got 32 MB of flash and 128 MB of memory and a 480 mhz processor, which is over twice as fast as the WRT54GL.The downside is that the TX power is calibrated differently than most dd-wrt routers and defaults to 17. That's where it needs to stay. If you try to move much off of that, the router starts acting very flakey.

This is one of those too good to be true items. The price was right, but performance fell short for me. I bought this router to replace an old Netgear that has worked flawlessly. I wanted network printing and drive sharing. After a few hours of setup issues, I was able to get my desktop, laptop, and printer working. The next day, I decided to try connecting a Maxtor USB drive. When I connected the drive, the browser setup froze, the router disconnected and the power light went out. The router would not power up again, so I returned it for a refund with no issue. I then purchased an Apple Airtouch Extreme for around twice as much money, but installation was quick and easy and it has worked perfectly since installation.

this product has an excellent connection when it hooked up directly to your cable but not enough info how to do wireless plus I dont want to spend more week to figure this out so I returned it and called WOW instead and I got theirs and everything set.

Make no mistake. The original firmware is buggy. I had all sorts of the problems with the router from slowdowns to complete freezes until I have replaced the original firmware with Tomato.Since then it has been working perfectly 24/7 even under heavy load.

The only reason to buy this is to put DD-WRT on it. Unfortunately, the WiFi crashes on it all the time, so I've resorted to using an older router as an access point.
