Very easy setup. Just put in the cd and answer the questions. No problems. My Asus router is at one end of the house and the repeater is in the middle of the house. I can now receive the wireless signal all over the house and in the basement. And our house is 3400 sq ft all on one floor! Should have purchased this long ago.

I picked up this router to improve my LAN throughtput/range over the old WRT 54GL with tomato. I loaded Toastman's tomato build on it and it's been 100% stable ever since. I live in a rural area where I can only get internet through a local fixed wireless provider (pocketinet) at 3mbps, and it's a busy house with 3 computers, 3 smartphones, and 2 roku devices. With the QoS features in Tomato I can make the small pipe actually work really smooth for us, even if we have 2 users streaming video at the same time games stay playable and webpages still load. Anyway the hardware works and has held up well, no complaints. No comment to the stock firmware as I never used it.

This is one of the best routers I ever dealt with, is fast to set up, has repeater mode, it's small and has a usb port which I used for wireless storage and charging my ps3 controllers. I would like to focus on one advantage of this router, it supports dd-wrt, I really recommend you to try it out, if you're getting this router for the repeater mode dd-wrt will make setting it up much easier and besides of that, it offers a lot of options not available in the factory firmware, although I don't recommend to switch to dd-wrt if you don't have experience with routers because could be a pain to set it up with all those options, but if you install it, don't change any settings unless you know what are for. About the usb support, it was difficult for me to set it up, using the factory software or dd-wrt, I had a hard time to get it to work, although it comes with a little disc that includes a torrent client that will let you download files from the net to a hard drive plugged into the usb even if your computer it's off (awesome, but dd-wrt allows to do the same, it's just a pain to set it up, more painful than official firmare). If you're getting dd-wrt, use the app on the disc, install it, get dd-wrt for your router, held the restore button on the router for a few seconds until the power light blinks and the upload dd-wrt using the app, do not update to dd-wrt using the web setup. Overall, a very good deal, almost a must!

I purchased this specifically as an access point, not a router - I already had a wireless router. Prior to purchasing this, I had to run a network cable from my study where the cable modem and existing wireless router is to reach our master bedroom where my wife's computer is because the wireless signal simply could not penetrate from my study across the living room and into the bedroom. Not sure why. When I acquired a Nook (BLASPHEMY!)I found that I could not surf the web from my bed - bummer. And my wife's iPhone signal was troublesome in the bedroom as well. This router was recommended because it has a simple switch on the back that instantly makes it an access point. So instead of the network cable going straight into my wife's computer, it goes into the ASUS. I ran another network cable from the ASUS back into my wife's computer, started everything, ran the Device Discovery installation program, and then ran the router utility to plug in my network's password, and voila' - now I have 5-bar signal strength in the bedroom, and I actually have a stronger signal in the living room coming from the ASUS than I did from my existing wireless router. I just installed it on 1-3-12 so time will tell about long term success, but the setup was so simple I give it 5 stars right away.

I've had this router for a few weeks now. I gave it 3 stars because of the stock firmware, once the firmware is working its an outstanding router. The firmware that comes with it is terrible. My bandwidth was dropping from to 20mbps after a reboot to about 4mbps after 8 hours of uptime and the asus firmware has no auto-reboot feature that I could find. If you have no intentions of flashing to different versions of the firmware then buy another router. The most up to date firmware that I used was version 9.9.3.7. Hopefully they will come up with some fixes. Firmware and support can be found here: [...]The first alternative firmware that I tried was DD-WRT. Its a big improvement over the asus firmware. My biggest complaint with DD-WRT was that I could not get the USB printer to work. Note, I was able to get it to work with the asus firmware but it would only print part of the page. With DD-WRT it seemed like there was a lof of Linux commands to get it to work with the printer and usb share. Reference: [...]Because I wanted to get the printer to work I tried a third firmware called tomato. Tomato has a lot of commonality with DD-WRT (both run linux on the RT-N16) but I have never needed to do anything from the command line. Also, I have printer sharing and USB file sharing (1 terabyte USB drive) working. The traffic graphing seems better with the Tomato firmware then DD-WRT or asus firmware (which didn't do it at all). My biggest complaint about tomato is that there is less documentation than DD-WRT. That being said, I haven't needed to read the documentation to the extent that I had to read the DD-WRT docs. Reference: [...]I think DD-WRT may be superior to tomato in the area of customization but I'm not sure. It seems like everyone customizes DD-WRT in one way or another while tomato users seem to use the gui that came with the firmware. The ability to customize may sound great but if its a requirement to get it to work and a pain in the butt to do then the joy of customizing starts to wear off pretty quickly.I installed new firmware at least 6 times in the last 2 weeks before I finally settled on tomato. Each time was a nerve racking experience and I was convinced that I would brick the router. Fortunately it all worked out.The hardware in the router seems really nice: I'm not an expert but as far as I can tell the processor, amount of ram and memory in this router is much better to the competition. The network connections seem to work fine. The wireless seems to work well. My antennas are always loose and flopping around but I think I can fix that by inserting an o-ring between each antenna and the chassis.Overall its a great router once you get the firmware straightened out.I recommend one of the following:a) If you are the type of person who will not flash the router then buy a different routerb) By the time that you read this asus may have fixed their firmware. Read their forum at [...]P_ID=WAa6AQFncrceRBEo&templete=2 and see if they have anything newer than 9.9.3.7.If they do then download it and the stock firmware includes an admin tool to install it fairly easily.c) If you don't like the asus firmware load tomato by following the instructions on this page ([...]). Note: These instructions require you to first flash to DD-WRT. Make sure that you: Save copies of any web pages with install notes before flashing, find out what the default password is before flashing, download both DD-WRT and Tomato before flashing to DD-WRT, make sure to reset the flash memory after flashing the bios by using the reset button.

I have had this router for about 8 months. It worked OK for a few months, and now I am having to reboot it several times a day to stay online. Usually a simple reboot won't work, and I am forced to power it down for several minutes and attempt to reconnect. After several tries I am usually able to get online, but it seems to worsten with each passing day. I have the latest firmware, which if anything, seems to have made things worse. Buyer beware!

Not sure what is going on with these lately, but I just had two of these B1 editions with the same multiple issues. For one, I could not flash these with DD-WRT to save my life. They kept going into a reboot cycle and I ended up putting the stock firmware back on. The second issue was the wireless performance was terrible right out of the box. I tried every different setting, channel, location, frequency, etc. Wired connection worked fine though. The third issue was that port forwarding did not work! I verified this with an external port scan.I'm pretty disappointed because I bought one of these a couple of years ago and it works flawlessly.

Once i got tomato flashed on it, that function has been working ever since quite well. Still, i miss the ddwrt flashed unit interface i had on the g unit this one replaced. This router, try as i might, would not take any of the 3 versions of ddwrt i downloaded. Grrr... also, my cellphone's wireless range is working well with this new router.

I need a router to serve as a media server. I want to attach a USB storage device so my entire network can get videos from one location. I prefer a router with Gigabit feature to ensure I have maximum bandwidth. DLNA is preferred but not required. Router will be configured as a switch. This router has everything I want. Setup was a breeze. The USB storage can be accessed by going to the assigned static IP. WiFi was not tested. I was able to transfer files from my local computer to the USB storage device connected to the router. Write speed to the USB storage connected to the router was ~10-14 Megs/sec. So everything works as designed, or so I thought. Within an hour, this router would lock up the internet access. I was not able to identify the cause. A "soft" restart did not repair the issue. A complete power recycle on this router did restore the internet access. This issue plaged all 3 workstation spread out in different areas. The internet lockup affects both LAN and WiFi. In the end, this router simply has great features and specs, but it did not work with my setup.

we have a old linksys router that hooks up to desktop in living room, but had to reset it every night and that is really annoying when you're playing online game on ps3 that connect to that router wirelessly. so we decided to try this new one.i am not a pro but have been doing stuff with computer without anybody's help ever since we have computer in our home, so i thought setting this up would be really easy like it says on the box.at first, it connected to internet when i just plug it in, but setting up page never opened and using the disc that came with it didn't even help at all. i kept on switching the mode, typed setup page address(192.168.1.1), no go. i don't get it.so i kept on unplugging modem and router so many times, still don't work. after few hours of trying, i gave up and put my old linksys router back. and then, for some reason, the desktop couldn't connect to the interet even though laptop is connected wirelessly. that is strange.next morning, i restart desktop, then it connects to internet using my old router. maybe that was the key.so i unplugged modem, router, all the cables...and restarted the desktop and then plug in new ASUS router again. it's connected to internet without me doing anything. then i typed 192.168.1.1, and finally login window showed up!!after that, everything was easy!now i hooked up my laptop, two ps3. it's doing fine so far.i hope i don't have to reset it all the time like my old router...

I had put off buying a device that would extend the wireless signal in our house because I thought it would be complicated to set-up. Much to my surprise setting this unit up couldn't have been easier. I moved the switch on the back of the unit to "access point", plugged it into my hard-wired hub in an area close to where I needed the wireless signal extended, and it worked. The instructions are pretty clear but the software is only for a PC computer, and I use Mac. After it was set-up I wanted to password protect the extended wireless signal. I tried to access the unit by bypassing the software and using its address (which was provided in the instructions) but I couldn't. After downloading the full manual from Asus I found out that when the unit is set up as a "repeater" or "access point" the only way to obtain the correct address is to use the provided software. So my wireless signal isn't password protected. We live in an area where the homes aren't too close together and I know all my neighbors, and there's no vehicle traffic nearby so I'm not worried. If I lived in an area where the signal could be accessed by more people I would probably find a way to add the password protection.I'm happy with how easy everything was to set-up. But if I were to do this again I would be sure that the unit included Mac software -so I could access the unit itself. Before buying this router I did look to see if it included Mac software and could find no information one way or the other. I assumed it did. In recent years most companies have been pretty Mac friendly and I haven't encountered a situation like this in a LONG time. Maybe there's a way around the software issue but I don't have the knowledge or experience to figure it out.

Hi. First off let me say I am not a very computer savvy person. I'm not aware of most technical names for each of these accessories that I have. So this review will be short, sweet, to the point and addresses setting up the Asus RT-N12 as an Access Point or AP.I live I'm a big old house with high ceilings and tons of rooms. My main router is a Linksy Cisco E3000 I bought from Walmart for $150.00 or so is downstairs in the front part of the house. The house picked up really well except for the downstairs back bed room and it was almost not even there in the upstairs back bed room. I bought this AUSU RT-N12 and this is what I did. Now like. I said earlier I'm not good on technical names so bear with me.1. On the back of my router I have 5 ports for Ethernet cables. One is labled internet (this is where my modem plugs into my router) and the rest are 1, 2, 3 and 4. Having two wired comps already plugged in I used number 3. Took a 25ft Ethernet (cat5 cable) and plugged it into 3 and ran that one room towards the back of the house where I had set up the Asus RT-N12 and plugged it into the BLUE port that says WAN and flipped the switch to AP.2. After plugging the Asus RT-N12 up and giving it a couple of moments to get normal and all the lights on I went to my computer that was already wired to my router. I typed in 192.168.1.110 in my browser and it took me to the setup page for the Asus RT-N12.3. The name and password it asks for are NAME: admin PASSWORD: admin these are the defaults. U can change these later.4. On the right there is a section to create ur SSID which is just the name of ur network (if u rename it make it differentthan ur regular network. Mine is Browns so on the Asus I named it Browns1) and then set ur password and click save. Now you technically have 2 networks. No installation cd or anything. So now at my house when I go to the backyard with my laptop and hammock, I just switch over to Browns1 and have a blast. My sons and daughters ipods,PSP, WiFi cellphones, PS3s, Nintendo DSi, Xbox 360 and several computers are open NAT and speeding along. GREAT PRODUCT!

The RT-N16 has two USB ports and instantly recognized the printer and external hard-drive. I upgraded to the latest firmware and couldn't be happier. this is a great router that has a notch up on the 655. I have Comcast and pay for 20/Mbps. I speedtest'ed it at 23/Mbps and wireless from about 50ft away @ 14+Mbps. Tons of features for those who like to tweak. You can run TomatoUSB but i'm really happy with the latest ASUS firmware.

I have actually bought two of these, one for home and after using for a week, I bought one for work. They were setup completely different in one is an access point only and the other is setup as a router. I have bought, setup, and used DLink, Netgear, Cisco, Linksys, and Buffalo routers. Needless to say none compare in terms of setup simplicity and reliability. It has always been a sore point to setup routers as what is supposed to work never quite does. With this one for an access point you have to use the disc-- and that was simple as it worked the first time I tried to set it up. That consumed 10-minutes. The other one I setup with DSL and utilized the web interface that runs through Internet Explorer automatically--- that one took 5-minutes.Overall, I am extremely impressed with the setup and if I could give it 10-stars I would. Price would also get 10-stars at $40 you can't go wrong. I almost tried another DLink that I bought locally, but returned it the same day as the reviews just were not making me warm and fuzzy. So as a whole it is a great value, performance is excellent, and setup will make an amateur look good right out of the box.I have even contemplated contacting my neighbor that I got them a Cisco router a couple of months ago and returning it to get them one of these as theirs gets quirky every so often and has to be restarted. The bonus with this Asus router is that it is open source if you wish to go that route. I may one day, but for now it has made something that should be easy, well, easy!

The router setup took all of 15 minutes and now my home is all set up with WiFi. The range more than covers all of my smallish home as well as the roof top terrace (I live on the top floor). The strength signal is good enough even on the roof and the data transfer rates between my laptop and my wife's are quite good. All five of our wireless devices connect up with no issues (2 MS, 2 Android, and 1 Mac). I recommend this for beginners. For intermediate and advanced users, DD-Wrt has support for this router, so I recommend this for even intermediate and advanced users. On it's listed price of USD 55, there is a mail-in rebate available from Asus that gives back USD 20, effectively reducing the price of this router down to 35 USD, making this a total steal. That said, I'll add updates in case I find any issues or features that I missed.Disclaimer: I use only the bare minimum networking aspect of the Router. There are may advanced features including possibility of using this as a FTP server, a print server, 3G USB dongle based internet access point or a torrent downloader that I have not utilised and will not utilised in the foreseeable future which may or may not make this even more attractive to people who will use these features (depending on their requirements).EDIT: I've started facing issues with the wireless connectivity. The wired connections work just fine, but the wireless network resets itself or disappears for a couple of minutes. Downgrading from 5 stars to 4 stars.

Set this up as a wireless access point for part of my house. Out of box, plugged it in, and both wired and wireless working. However, the provided software is all Windows. Hard to believe that a hardware maker would be Windows-only today, but there it is, unless I am missing something. Nothing on their website either. So I cannot change the SSID, update firmware, etc. Unless ASUS has something to offer me via support, I think this will need to go back.Maybe 5 starts if you are Windows, 1 star for Mac.UPDATE: Originally gave this 3 stars b/c of Mac problem. After e-mail with their tech support, I'll upgrade to 5 stars, pending future performance. It actually does support Mac Os X -- just not through the software. As with other routers, can be managed directly with the right IP address. Of course, figuring out the IP address when using the device as an access point takes a little doing. You have to go into your main router, and see what IP address DHCP has assigned, then enter that into your browser, and go in using the default username/ID of admin/admin. Once in, it's much like any other router config. Can you believe that none of their product materials, website and manual say anything about how to manage this with a Mac? Not very savvy. All's well that ends well, and the product appears to be excellent.

The ASUS firmware is just fine and works perfect, however if you replace the factory firmware with DD-WRT you can control the watt output, use this as a repeater / repeater bridge, wireless client, access point and much more. I use mine as a wireless card on my PC and X-BOX. It kicks the pants off every internal wireless card iv tried. (NOTE) In order to use these fetchers you need to replace the firmware with DD-WRT. (Doing so voids all warranties.) Thats why i tried it out on an inexpensive router like this one but I'm glad i did. :)

I've bought tons of stuff on Amazon before but never felt the need to review an item, but after seeing some of the negative feedback for this I felt compelled to.I just moved into a new house on the 2nd floor with a Linksys router in the basement. I was getting about 3 bars of wi-fi on my laptop, 70% signal strength on my PS3, and 0-1 bars on my phone. Since there was really no way of moving the router from the basement, I decided to purchase this repeater. It took me all of 10 minutes to set-up....I connected my laptop to the Asus router and the browser opened up to the Asus settings page. Put the rotuer on repeater mode, scanned for my network and entered the password. I was a little skeptical at this part because the window never actually said "connected" and kept attempting to connect to my network, but after a few minutes I noticed my phone had a full 4 bars of wi-fi. Even though I never got a prompt saying it linked up, it must have worked. My ps3 is up to 100% signal strength and my phone and laptop have 4 bars of wi-fi. Another good part is the repeater doesn't create a "new" SSID... it just amplifies the original SSID so you don't have to worry about connecting to a separate network. To test my theory that it did in fact connect, I unplugged the Asus router and watched my PS3 drop back to its 70% and lost reception on my phone. Plugged router back in, re-connected to the network with all my devices and it's back to 100%.This repeater works so well that the entire house now has 4 bars of wi-fi... when before you could be right NEXT to the linksys router and you would only get 3-4. Highly recommended, really don't get the issues people are having. I didn't have to "flash DDRT" or whatever, just plugged it in and 10 minutes later it was all good.

for only $40, didn't expect much.it does what it's supposed to do, and i do recommend getting this.signal strength is pretty strong. getting -60signal strenth and -88noise.i am 30-40 feet away from this, and behind 2 walls as well.default / stock firmware isn't as nice as dd-wrt, so i do advise flashing it.i flashed it with dd-wrt build #17990, and is using it as a repeater.

After moving into a large, old house -- with lath and plaster walls -- my old wireless router wasn't cutting it. Long story short, I now use a NetGear WNDR3700 as the primary gateway and the ASUS RT-N12 as a wireless bridge to a wired PC and printer. The ASUS setup was truly simple. With a minor change to the IP address to match the 3700, my network has now been up and running 100% solid for more than 9 months. This setup has been so flawless with the factory firmware I never even bothered doing an upgrade or trying (again ...) DD-WRT. But yes, there were complaints about the 3700's firmware in the early releases, I just never had a problem. All I need now is a second RT-N12 because my daughter moved her computer to another room and the printer stayed where it was.(As an aside, my network moves a lot of data from a Comcast line. Wireless devices: Roku XD/S, Wii, Mac desktop and laptop, Windows laptop, 3 iPhones. Wired devices: 2 printers, 1 PC desktop, 1 Windows Home Server, 1 USB drive attached to WNDR3700. Before this, I tried four different routers I had hanging around from Buffalo, D-Link, TP-Link, and Belkin, in various combinations, with different builds of firmware from DD-WRT and Tomato, and several versions of the factory firmware. I really can't overstate my happiness in finding two products that worked seamlessly together. Unfortunately, it seems to be a rare experience.)

You can't beat the performance of this router for the price. I have a top of the line Asus router as my primary wireless hub. I use 2 of the RT-N12/B routers as wireless repeaters in my house. They are excellent. Setup can be a bit confusing. If you are performing setup using a computer with wireless make sure you turn the wireless on the computer off before you proceed. Connect the router to your computer with a network cable, type in 192.168.1.1 in your browser and you will see the setup page for the router. Next, go to your favorite website in the browser. If you see the page it means the router is working and you are in business. Disconnect the router from your computer and place it anywhere in your home. Make sure you remember to flip the switch in the back and set it to REPEATER. I have owned these for a few months and they have been flawless.

I almost gave up on this thing; in fact it was boxed up ready to be returned, when I gave it one more chance, which I am happy I did. We needed a repeater since a big concrete column blocks most of the WiFi signal to the bedroom. The instructions on this thing are not great, and it wouldn't work at all installing via our Macbook, but that might have been me. Once I tried the install via my Windows 7 laptop, it worked out better. One tip, the instructions say to install by plugging an ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports; I had no luck with that. Once I did the installation by plugging the cable into the main ethernet port (I think it's blue), and accessed the installation screen, it worked out. After installation, it is wireless, of course; but you do need the cable for the initial setup. We only use it on the repeater function. One weird thing is that every few days it seems to lose the main WiFi signal. But, it's an easy fix: I just unplug it, count to 10, and plug it back in. Within a minute or two, it reconnects to the main router, and the signal returns to being strong. Now that my memories of the frustrating installation process are starting to fade, I can say that this thing is worth it. Great price and ultimately a great repeater.

ASUS RT-N13U Wireless-N Router, Access Point, and RepeaterI live in a large steel frame 1929 building in Manhattan. I can see some 40 networks from my neighbors who are upstairs, downstairs, across the street...too many too close. I have to reach about 100 feet from the Linksys WRT N160 in my office to the two Roku boxes in the living room and family room. This is after passing through three plaster on wire lath walls. I was doing pretty ok for a while with careful selection of channel and positioning of the Rokus. This last began to get critical with the presence of a new signal, very strong, and close even if not on an adjacent channel. Looking at the new interferer I saw one ssid but two MAC addresses, and guessed someone was running a repeater nearby and I would need one in self defense.I have known ASUS for a long time. They made my first pentium mother board. Very high quality and easily modifiable. So I read some informative posts, who all said that first install the latest firmware. Dont read the instructions from the mfr. and explained that you first configured the beast as a router, and then switched it to repeater. Turn it on in a strong signal area and it will do the rest. That was it. I have not installed dd-wrt since it is not needed for a repeater. I chose the location of the ASUS with some thought and now have a signal at 11mbsthat blankets the rest of the apartment. If you keep your head it will be a simple matter to install.

I purchased this as a replacement for an old D-Link router that was on it's last legs. Setup was easy, had this up and running in about 20 minutes. I am using the default firmware, although the UI isn't fantastic, it has worked well for me. I tried the 20Mhz/40Mhz bandwidth and had noticeable slowdown on my wireless. I think this was mostly due to the amount of wireless networks in the area, it has working great since I switched it back to just 20Mhz. I've had this up and running for about 6 weeks and haven't had to reboot it yet. I'd recommend it.

Slightly long story needed to set the stage. About a year ago, I purchased a Samsung Blu-Ray player that supports wireless internet access for various media sites. Unfortunately, it did not include the wireless part. So, I purchased a USB Wireless Dongle from Amazon at a good price. (Of course Samsung requires their own wireless connector). Again, unfortunately, the TV/Blu-Ray player was about as far away from my wireless Router as it can get in my house. The Samsung wireless connections just wouldn't quite work. I think the fireplace in the middle of the direct path had something to do with that. All our laptops worked fine but the DVD player couldn't get a good connection.I looked for various repeaters over the following year, but they all cost much more than the Asus product so I kept passing. On a lark, I happened to be doing my monthly search for a repeater after another frustrating attempt at achieving wireless access. I saw the Asus product and read several reviews about its technical abilities. I went ahead and purchased the Asus Repeater/Router. Amazon delivered crazy fast for free and I just set the Asus up in the kitchen bringing the signal closer to my family room and centralizing it in the house. My Blu-Ray DVD player can now access all the internet features it was originally advertised for. Also our laptop connections are much better than before. If desired I could also add a few wired internet connections as well.I haven't tried upgrading the flash ROM as the product works fine for me out of the box. The only thing I had to do was configure the Asus router to link to my primary wireless connection, mostly by entering my access codes.I recommend this product for anyone that needs to "stretch" their wireless access within a house.

I have had this router for just about a month now. I read so many reviews on here that said the DD-WRT firmware was so much better than the stock firmware, so right from the get-go I flashed the DD-WRT on it. The process took about 15 minutes for a first time firmware flasher, not too bad.Since I isntalled the router I havent had to touch it once. It has been 100% stable with my windows 7, Mac OSX and Android/iOS devices. I couldnt ask for a better router for my home.Cant wait to use the USB to put a HDD on it and plug the printer into it too so everyone can print from the printer. If you can figure out how to flash the DD-WRT firmware, odds are you are going to LOVE this router.GONE ARE THE DAYS OF POWER CYCLING MY ROUTER ON A DAILY BASIS! Wahoooo!
