I installed this router as a wirelees router and it hooked to the net just fine. However, I was not able to get it to stream netflix. It would bring up the netflix screen, but when I tried to stream, "Connection too slow for this media," would come up. One HDTV was the only thing connected at the time. So it works just not too well. I finally installed it as a repeater at the back of the house and it does the job.

After loading up the recommended build of DD-WRT onto this router, I can say hands down that I have found a replacement for the venerable WRT54G series from Linksys. I had struggled to find a router that could run for months or even years at a time with no hiccups and after much research I decided that this was the replacement. Screaming fast wired speeds, and equally fast N speeds. The only complaint that I can bring against this router is that it does run quite warm and will need adequate ventilation. All in all a superb product.

This is a terrific product, especially for the price. I am using it for extending the reach of my wireless network to my downstairs where we just got an HDTV. I can tell you, this made a HUGE difference in terms of wireless signal. We are now able to watch streaming HD movies, whereas before I was barely getting passable download speeds. Setup was easy, recommend this product.

As a customer of other Asus products, I know the only help you get from them is what you can find on their website and forums. I could not find any phone number for support on their site.I tried to find the manual for this item before buying it, so I knew exactly what I was getting, but that proved to be harder than it should have been. First: I could not find it via their support page with the drop down menus. I looked under networking and every possible product they offered and this model was not there. I finally resorted to the search function, and did find the manual. However, you have to answer a captcha first. But you still can't download the manual from their site w/o enabling scripting in your browser (a security risk) and then you have to install their download manager (another security risk). It's a manual. Probably a PDF file. Downloading a manual in pdf format should be no harder than clicking on a link. So their company philisophy is that to get a manual for a product, you have to enter a captcha, enable scripting and then install an application to download it. I look at it this way: If this is what they are putting me thru to get the manual, what kind of support can I expect if I need it? I have nothing against the product, and have used Asus products in the past. However, companies that make getting help difficult are not companies whose products I buy. My advice: If you think you might need help with this product, try to use their website before you make the purchase to know exactly what you will be getting yourself into first.

The specs on this router are impressive. If you get the Netgear WNR3500L or one of the Linksys open source routers, you may get duel channel but thats all the extra features you get for a lot more.Gigabit LAN (Use CAT 5e or -> 6 <- Preferred to take advantage, check the wording on your cable), WAN, 2x USB 2.0 (Most routers have 1 port) and N draft wireless with removable antennas! Having removable antennas allows you to add custom high gain antennas for better performance and throughput. Also, you can mount a network drive and or a printer over the network via the USB ports.Finally, DD-WRT big (All features such as Xbox Kaid, VoIP, Hotspot, IPv6, etc) build support on a 32MB flash, 128MB RAM and 480MHz CPU that can easily OC to the factory level of 530MHz.I don't even bother with the stock firmware, if you looking at this to find a good DD-WRT router and not just any other brand, get this model. I have been using a WRT54G series router for 4 years and this router makes me not to want to go back and I wish I moved sooner to take advantage of this router's specs as the WRT54G series are getting old.

I run a computer consulting Biz. We constantly are replacing all brands of routers; the worst being linksys, then netgear, then dlink. We bridged two wnr3500 in our shop and ran them for since they were release since they tested best under nearly every condition; but started to get flaky as we added more and more computers. This asus has been running amazingly fast and the wireless signal is the best ever; small net builder . com even ran their test agreeing. Apparently since I purchased our first one of this asus r13u small net builder has removed it from their site for unknown reasons. They even claimed that the linksys dual band 4200 bested this by nearly 20% in signal strength. The 4200 cannot do dd-wrt, repeating, and many other features that this asus can. In fact this asus does everything we can think of and more; minus 5ghz which does work as advertised anyways.There is much more to say but I can spend more time now.BEST ROUTER EVER.

I bough this to use as an exclusive N access point along side a b/g access point for my newer devices. It was so easy to setup it took me less than 10 minutes. In fact, it was so simple and easy I don't remember setting it up, and it's been working great. Range is slightly better than my b/g AP, speed and performance is great also, everything load much faster compare to the b/g access point. Never a single problem for months. Set and forget basically.

It seems that I bought the last two of these ASUS routers on the Amazon site and it took some time for them to get back in stock. After I recieved them I tried to refer back to the helpful reviews found here to get one working in repeater bridge switch mode and they had disapeared. Luckily it came back in stock and the reviews reapeared. I currently have one working in access point mode and it is doing well right out of the box. So far no luck on bridge repeater mode but I haven't tried everything yet. I will update when I get it working that way. So if you see something on Amazon and it sounds really technical and there is helpful advice in the reviews. Be sure to copy and paste that somwhere before you buy it.

After a lengthy research I finally decided to buy this router. What a pleasant surprise. I initially tried to configure it on my own without reading the manual and had a little bit of a problem. Not the device fault. So I read some of the ones posted here and followed the instruction that describe how he used it as a repeater. Lo and behold I had it configured. I did not install any other software like dd-wrt. This router is communicating with my primary router wirelessly and serving as a repeater plus 3 wired ethernet connections, ( PS3, media player and dish network box). I streamed some 1080p movies from my usb hard drive in my main computer to the media player and it performed beautifully. It is working perfectly. I've had it for 2 weeks now and am completely satisfied. With this unit you can attached 4 wired ethernet connection plus use it as an extender to your wireless router. Good job Asus.

I tried this item several times and locations, called their customer support, but it did not extend my wifi range.So I bought an Amped SR300 and it did work fine.

I purchased this router to use as a repeater to boost the signal on my main floor as well as provide a wired port for a home theater system connection. Based on advice from other reviews, I flashed with the DD-WRT firmware right out of the box. This ended up being a mistake. It was confusing and I could never achieve the result I wanted. I ended up re-flashing with the most current ASUS firmware and it works fine. If you are not very familiar with custom firmware, I would recommend trying it as-is first. I spent a good day wrestling with setting this up. I have only experienced a dropped signal problem with the router once. Though not very convenient during a Netflix movie stream, a power cycle corrected the problem. If you're looking for an inexpensive repeater or access point, give this one a try.

Gave 4 stars because of the firmware that comes from Asus. Had issues with stability especially wireless. The web management interface is very slow to use. The hardware on the other hand is excellent. It is a shame that such good hardware is saddled with such poor firmware. The good is that there are 3rd party firmware available. I have used the latest from Asus, 1014, firmware without any real improvement.Have installed for various amounts of time 3 3rd party firmwares, DD-WRT, Tomato and Oleg. All have there good and bad. DD-WRT does not have easy setup of printers or USB drives. Not as stable as the other 2 3rd party. Tomato has some very interesting things. Provides good printer and USB support. Has some interesting things like keeping a record of how much you have transferred to and from the Internet by the day and month. Will give a signal quality for the wireless connections and a scanner to see what other wireless access points there are in your area and what channels. Depending on the version, there are several sub Tomatoes to choose from. The one to use on this router is teddy-bears. It is pretty stable and he is actively improving. The last one I have used it Oleg. This one has the Asus interface (wl-500). Oleg started with the Asus firmware and has done much to improve the reliability. This is probably the most stable of the 3 3rd party firmware. It just works. There also is a very active developer group for Oleg. For me the Oleg software is the most stable and is what I am currently using.So pros:Very good fast hardware.Supported by 3rd party developers that take advantage of the hardware.Cons:OEM firmware has issues. If you are going to use as a basic router then you should be happy with the OEM firmware, however other things have issues.

I bought this wireless router to replace my old Netgear wireless g router. I read the review from CNET that didn't recommend using stock firmware but using Tomato firmware. I first tried DD-WRT firmware which worked okay, however, not great. The DD-WRT firmware was not easy to setup nor stable. The DD-WRT was okay for normal AP mode usage, however, it was not stable when I set it up to client bridge mode, a.k.a. Ethernet bridge. After struggling for weeks then I finally tried the Tomatousb firmware. WOW, it was so easy to setup and use. The user GUI was so much simpler than the DD-WRT, yet it had all I needed and I would ever needed in the future. It worked fantastic as an AP and a client bridge also. Now I'm using it as AP and the QoS seems work great (I'm using the recommended setting from Toastmaster. Many people mentioned the stock firmware looks nice, but, the functionality is not there yet. I recommend using DD-WRT for normal AP wireless mode (You can still try using it for other wireless mode, like client bridge, repeater bridge mode for example, if you know what you are doing), however, I can't recommend enough trying Tomatousb firmware for its easy setup and use, it even supports Samba(for sharing with Windows PCs)out of the box on the external USB drives(Thumbdrive or hard disk). Printer server is supported which I didn't try yet so I can comment. Great router at a bargain price.

I bought it in March 2010 on a recommendation in a forum that this supports DD-WRT, the leading open source firmware for powerful routers. But DD-WRT is not available as of Nov 15, 2010. For my usage - connecting 2 Dell b/g laptops, this is good value-for-money. I upgraded to the latest 1.0.1.7 Asus firmware version and most problems like frequent disconnects disappeared. In Oct, I upgraded to firmware 1.0.2.1 and this slowed my internet and videos on youtube, hulu all stopped buffering after a minute. After frantic days of working out that the upgrade caused the issue, I downgraded to 1.0.1.7 and all my streaming issues are gone. I would recommend the router for casual home usage. It was a breeze to set up. I'm yet to use it on n devices. More than 6 months without any major issues! A steal at the price.Update Sep 2012: It has been working very good for the last 2.5 years. Recently I noticed frequent disconnects. I tried to upgrade to the latest Asus firmware 1.0.2.4, but the disconnects did not completely disappear. So I went through the DD-WRT forums and after a few failed attempts, managed to get DD-WRT v16789 build working without any disconnects. My usage is now 2 n laptops, an Ipad and a Samsung Exhibit phone and this cheap router supports all of them powerfully.

This is a really nice device. As others have said, when set in repeater mode the wired ports on the back also work. So for $40 I killed two birds with one stone - it serves as a bridge so I can connect a blue-ray player to get Netflix on-line, and as a repeater to extend and strengthen the signal at the far end of my house. Setup was definitely not very clear. Some other reviews include detailed instructions - follow them. It was actually difficult to figure out whether my laptop was really connecting to it, or to my original wireless router downstairs since it just showed the same SSID. I ended up figuring it out by checking the MAC address my laptop showed and comparing to the MAC on the botton of the ASUS. Then I unplugged the ASUS and saw the MAC on my laptop changed. I would have thought the repeater would get it's own SSID so you can pick. Maybe you can, but I just gave up once I saw it was working.

We recently upgraded our home routers to a Wireless N router (netgear brand) and needed a access point to be able to connect our aged desktop and Xbox 360 Arcade to since neither of these had wireless cards built in and due to their age we didnt want to invest in wireless cards/adapters. The access point was a breeze to set up. I saw other reviews that said that you had to disconnect your regular router in order to set this piece up as an access point. I simply plugged it in and it picked up on my existing wireless signal and I allowed it access to our secure network and it works great. It was a good investment and increased my signal strength in the back of our house significantly. I have had no issues with this device since its initial installation.The instructions that came with it are a bit weird and can be hard to understand but the device itself works great out of the box.

This is a great piece of hardware. Note that I didn't include software in that statement. The stock software (or "firmware" as it is called) hampers the device. However if you are willing to do some internet research you will find that it is pretty easy to unlock the full potential of this router. The stock firmware LOOKs really cool but I found that my browsing performance seemed slow, and the initial setup of getting the router to talk to my ISP was problematic. I stayed on the stock firmware about a week and then changed to Tomato USB; since then I have been much happier with the device. I have a printer and external drive hooked up to the USB ports. One thing to note in moving from the stock firmware to Tomato USB is that you will need to re-configure your printer and drive sharing on any devices that connect to the router once you upgrade your firmware; apparently the stock firmware and Tomato USB use different settings for sharing printers and drives. Save yourself the headache and go immediately to Tomato USB.

i bought this item for the wireless repeater mode as my nyc apartment is long and didn't have wireless coverage over the whole space. the setup was three steps and couldn't be easier or quicker. Step 1 flip the switch to your desired mode "AP, Repeater, or Router" connect to your computer. Step 2, select and log in to your preferred network. Step 3, sprinkle with fairy dust. voila. done. buy it. oh, the coverage is great too.

Pros: feature rich, stable, no compatibility issues so far.Cons: the firmware came with the router is practically useless, cannot mount my HL-2240 printer. Had to install Tomato v1.28 to make the USB port work.Summary - great features, solid hardware, unusable installed firmware. Be ready to spend time to flush the firmware to make everything work.

This wireless router was so simple to set-up, and the performance incredible. I always used name brands , but i took a chance and wow was I impressed. Once hooked up it gave me great gaming and streaming.

I purchased this to replace an ailing Linksys WRT54GL router. I was looking for a DD-WRT compatible router because with the right hardware, this firmware will run for several years without the need for a reboot. Well, this seems to be such hardware. The Asus gear works very well with the DD-WRT firmware and has not needed a reboot since we installed it.The router is not only solid but it is attractive as well.

This device can do 3 things. When I received it, it could only do 2 things. It was very painful toggling my laptop between wireless (to search for solutions), and the direct network connection to the unit for setup. I finally discovered that the "repeater" mode was not functional with the firmware they shipped it with. Really? The browser gui would not show any wifi connections to establish connectivity. It wasn't even close to working....how could this get through Quality Assurance? I found the right file, downloaded and uploaded it to the unit. It's working now, but I will never by an ASUS product again. I would rather pay another 10 bucks then to waste an evening when I could have been spending time with my kids.Application: Office is now in basement. Since my Vonage box needs a hardwire connection, I figured I would use this to pick up wifi, and then hardwire my computer and vonage into it. It works, and Vonage sounds good and stable.

This router is cheaper than anything similar from Netgear or Linksys, has a longer range, and has a ton of really nice features like extending existing networks. You can use a USB hub to use a printer and a hard disk on this.

After you figure out the configuration, it works great. The instructions are out of date as told to me by tech support so if you're having problems to set up as repeater, you may want to call them first. Also, don't forget to upgrade the firmware.New to this review. It has a tendency to loose the connection to my main router.

I purchased this device to use as a repeater. The setup did not work as described in Quick Start Guide, as the browser did not open up the QIS utility. Once I pointed the browser to it using the devices IP address I was able to get to the utility. After that, the wireless radio would only work for about a minute. The light would flash, then go dark. So the unit would only work for a minute each time I did a power cycle. Obviously poor quality control, and I wasn't about to spend time getting a replacement. Amazon at least has a good return policy, but it is frustrating when you buy a product that just doesn't work. I'm going to find a different product.

I'm partial to TomatoUSB firmware, and this router runs it fine. Gigabit LAN ports are nice, but limited usefulness with lack of jumbo frame support (i removed a star in the features rating because of this). Still one of the best all-in-one units out there. To do better you'd have to spend much more or use a purpose-built machine.Update 11/8/11: Still running rock solid 4 months later!

Asus RT-N12 Wireless-N Router arrived as promised in great condition.Set up the WAN/Wireless Connection without loading the CD after thecable company came out to fix the weak signal. I went back to just acable modem (I ordered a cable/wireless router combination boxinitially) because the combination box was a used one, plus $10 extrarenting expense with cable service. Anyway, I am extremely pleased withthis little router. Thank you Amazon for fast delivery. :)

I bought this router to replace an old Linksys/Cisco 802.11g router. The price, and Asus's reputation for quality Laptops and motherboards is why I chose it. For me, an IT person, setup was rather easy, but you do need to read the docs carefully, I think the average person may have some problems getting it going. Also, check Asus's web site for new firmware, the router I got was behind a couple of releases. I upgraded the firmware before configuring. I haven't experienced the need for frequent reboots the other reviewers have reported, but I use it as part of a 2 wifi router/access point network, and the throughput is slower than before, but only when testing, it's not noticeable when surfing the web. One interesting problem I had was the radio in the router would stop working for a few minutes at a time, for no apparent reason, then just start working again with no action being taken. Then I noticed that it was happening when some one was using our cordless phone (not cellular)in one of the rooms near the router. Some testing confirmed it, the phone was interfering with the wifi signal. The router had picked channel 3 on it's own-I forced it to channel 8 and that cured that problem. For the price, it's good, but not great, and well below the quality I'm used to from Asus. And BTW, DD-WRT firmware is now available for this router, (thanks to the other reviewer who mentioned it),I just downloaded the files and will apply them tomorrow.

Many hours of lost billable time for services not rendered for myself and another IT pro. Wish I had the resources to sue for that.Design flaws, verified by their own tech support, won't "repeat" with same model, shuts down constantly "repeating" on ATT Two-wire. Going into the trash. This product coming from ASUS, who I have the HIGHEST REGARD for in the PC motherboard area, totally surprised me, I assume they bought the circuit or even the whole product form an inferior company.Bruce Hinton

I had decided to get a dlink router with good reviews that was more expensive, then the price went up by another $10 and I looked around again. Found this gem and glad I did. Excellent performance, extremely easy setup, and my favorite feature so far is that you can set up multiple wireless networks, so most things can be on WPA, but you can have another SSID that is open or on WEP to support things like a nintendo DS, but only allowed access to the internet.Great features, performance, price, AND you can re-flash it with dd-wrt if you want. All-in-all a very good buy.

I would have to say that this is the best Router That I have ever used. I bought it so that I could run Tomatousb on it, and with tomato this router is stable and fast. I have tinkered with running virtual servers off of the router, but so far the only one that I have used is the print server, and the print server works fine and it is nice not having to have a computer on to print.When it comes to networking this router has been flawless, we have had torrents running, Netflix streaming, and still been able to browse the web smoothly on other web enabled devices. It is by far everything I could possibly want out of a router and then some.I would highly recommend it to anybody, as long as they are comfortable running the easy flashing process to put tomato on it. On the tomatousb.org website there is a step by step guide for flashing tomatousb to the router.

I bought this router to serve as a repeater for my Belkin N+ router. I needed to increase the signal strength for a computer in a back bedroom. I read the reviews here, prepared myself for a nightmare, and took a chance.At least one reviewer said it worked simply by plugging it in. I tried this with no success. The documentation is pathetic as others have said. Making use of Google, I was able to find the IP address for the router (because it isn't in the documentation) and tried to configure it using the Asus GUI. Attempts to connect to my Belkin resulted in the interface freezing and locking me out of the router. After more Googling, I found this was a known problem that was supposedly fixed with a firmware upgrade. I flashed the new firmware from Asus and it did the same thing.So, dd-wrt time. I flashed the dd-wrt firmware successfully. I Googled three different setups to make the router work as a repeater with dd-wrt. All of them failed with the last method leaving the router inaccessible just like the Asus firmware did. I have now given up.Because others have reported success configuring this router as a repeater I can only reach two conclusions. Either I received a bad unit or it will not work as a repeater with a Belkin N+ router. Either way, it is going back. Do not waste your time and money on this router unless you are a networking god.

UPDATE: Asus recently released updated firmware (1.0.1.7) that can be easily flashed to the router, and all of the problems I had with this little router are gone.I'm incredibly satisfied with this thing now. I don't have to reset it it anymore, it's been running for almost a month straight with no hiccups. A little caveat, I'm using it as a wireless repeater, so I haven't tried a lot of the available functions to see if everything is working great now, but this router is now rock solid for me. Alternate DD-WRT firmware is still not ready, but I'm pretty happy with the stock firware now- the rest of my review is my original review:I bought this router knowing the issues that people had been having with it (like the need to reset it every couple of days after it locks up), but because it is so inexpensive and I thought that DD-WRT firmware (which would make this thing solid as a rock) was coming soon, I jumped on it anyway.Well, 5 months later, DD-WRT is still waiting on wireless drivers from Broadcom, so I'm stuck with the stock firmware, low wireless speeds, and having to reboot it every couple of days. I bought a better router and am now using this as a wireless repeater for a remote part of the house. As a result, it's seeing less use, and it seems that I don't have to reset it as often.Either way, don't make the same mistake as I did and purchase this router. I'll edit my review if I ever get DD-WRT on the router to let people know if this fixes all of its problems.

When I 1st got this I thought it was great. Switching it to DD-WRT was not that bad and it was blazing fast. I thought I found a really sweet deal. However, now that I have owned this thing for 6 months it is beginning to have problems. I'm unsure if it is because we have too many things connected to it, 2 smartphones, occassionally 2 iTouches, an iPad and sometimes as many as 7 laptops and an XBOX 360 on it but it worked before with all of those things on it just fine. Now even at night when nobody is on the router, we would still experience lag spikes and disconnects from the router. I wanted to like this and I did for a while until it started breaking down on me. Really good router when you first get it but longevity on this thing leaves something to be desired.

Well I've been using this router for a month and it's miles better than my old Linksys WRT150N. See below my highlights:The good:- Very stable. Now it's at 9 days uptime.- Very fast throughput (LAN and WLAN)- Very nice wireless signal range (I get 60% at a ~100 meters distance with a couple of obstacles (the router is placed in my flat and I can access it from the other side of the street using my old Nokia E71)- Good USB file sharing features (have not tested P2P yet)- 3 dettachable antennas (I plan to get better ones in the future)- 128MB RAM...That's a lot!The bad:- The firmware is terrible. I couldn't connect to the internet using it. The connection kept dropping. It really seems a half-rushed-made pice of software. But that's all right, since, before buiyng it, I read a lot of reviews pointing to the firmware drawbacks, I was planning to use DD-WRT already, so no prob.Tip:As I was used to DD-WRT firmware, it was my first choice, and it got the router work as it should, but, by reading additional articles and forum threads out there, I decided to give Tomato software a try. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT! It seems to have been designed for this router. It's a perfect marriage!That's it!Cheers from Brasil!

The Asus router/repeater is great. Not only did it extend my signal, but it tripled it's strenght! My only "complaint" is that nowhere in the setup instructions (really easy) does it tell you to REFRESH your browser screen. It says that it "pops up" automatically, but only AFTER you refresh it. Just select the signal you want to extend and that's it - besides inputting your password.

The two units that I've ordered with the original firmware had the same problem: Unreliable connection dropping all the time. I was trying to use as a repeater, so I cannot evaluate as a router or access point.I've flashed the two units with Tomato USB firmware and one is working ok. The second one is going back.So it's an OK router to function as a Bridge IF you are lucky to get an functional one and flash with Tomato USB.By the way, the ASUS routers today are one of the best to flash a 3rd part firmware. They come with a specific tool for firmware flash and it's almost impossible to "brick" them (means make it unusable by firmware installation error)Hope this can helps.

I bought this router, thinking that is the best one bellow the 100 USD, with usb/printing/sharing/storage/ftp/p2p features that I was looking for, but what I did not know, was that I will definitely need more than " some" networking knowledge to get even the internet working: the most basic feature, but the "wizards" does not seem to understand the different situations and the various context within the network environment and as a result I had to manipulate a DNS servers, IP's, etc by my self, and I really don't know that much about that stuff...The "Download Master" is really unstable, is quite frustrating that I have to disconnect the hard drive from the router every now and then to scan and fix clusters or something like that, directly through windows. The problem seams to be that when you have to hard reset the router (because it has lost every type of connectivity)and you have the USB Hard Drive connected (downloading files or not), and if you don't have access to the router's UI, you won't be able to "safely remove" it. so you will ultimately damage your storage device connection properties temporary until you fix them directly with my PC.I have not tried using a different firmware like DD-WRT, but I am in the process of learning how-to...In conclusion, don't buy it if you don't like to handle complicated configurations... At first the firmware UI will make you think he is smart enough, but the true is that he doesn't have a clue on what's going on, you have to do everything by yourself, and take time to set up everything properly.... at least in my case. IF YOU GETTING THIS ROUTER FOR REPEATER THEN DON'T BUY! ASUS RT-N12 router is good i order 2 routers well packed. the routers look very nice routers i need for motel it's 27 rooms motel i was going to do this connect 1st routers as ROUTER MODE and 2nd as a REPEATER but the repeater didn't response very well so i set up as 1st ROUTER and 2nd as a ACCESS POINT i am very good with tech but the only thing i was unable to do was repeater mode. unless this is great AS A ROUTER AND ACCESS POINT and does work well i am been using this since 2 weeks ago. The SETUP was easy without CD. now i did order 2 more for another motel. I recommended this product who want wireless N router/access point for HOME or SMALL OFFICE.

This router works really well and is very fast. I needed a new Wireless-N router and am definitely happy with this one. I loaded up Tomato USB on it and it really makes everything very speedy over the network. I don't even use particularly advanced router/networking features, so it's simple enough to just have it set up and work. I just wanted to get something reliable and fast, and this fits the bill once it has Tomato on it. I haven't had to reset or mess around with it since I first set it up. Highly recommended.

Initially I was looking at other routers by Netgear and Linksys because of the brand name, but after some research I stumbled across this little beauty. I needed two new routers and didn't want to spend too much money, so my budget was around $50 each. The other routers at that price range from Netgear and Linksys all didn't have 802.11n nor made it easy to switch between the router acting as a router or a repeater.My problem was that I had my modem on my first floor, and then 3 computers in the basement without wireless networking cards. So I wanted to have one router on the first floor with another router in the basement acting as a repeater, but instead of using the wireless broadcast, just connect straight to it through ethernet since I didn't want to run a ridiculously long wire to my basement.Initially I was going to use DD-WRT, but after doing the initial set up with the routers I found no need. I plugged in the router on the first floor, got that broadcasting wireless, went to my basement, switched the router to repeater mode, and got all 3 computers downstairs networked and connected to the internet in 3 hours. I set aside my whole afternoon to do this, but ended early and now have time to write this review.I've only had the routers for a few hours, but so far they've been great. Highly recommended if you don't mind theres no USB port or Giga ethernet on the router.

Pros:-Cheap B/G router-runs in AP mode-Power brick was small and light weight compared to an older Linksys 54G.Cons:-No software wireless support in DD-WRT. Some soldering required for a quick fix which isn't the most optimal solution.-Web interface was a bit confusing.-Band width management is really really bad. Avoid this!-802.11N is run in 2.4GHz range which will interfere with 802.11B/GFYI:Port forwarding is called Virtual Server.SETUP:Router modeNo Bandwidth managementVirtual ServerWireless B/GREVIEW:Do NOT use the bandwidth management! This management slowed down the connection to the internet. I had to reset the router. Once it was back to the original configurations, the router has not given me any problems. So far the router has been running for two weeks without any problems.The wireless B/G connection works well. I don't usually play my Xbox 360 over wireless, but I did test the wireless N function. I was able to play a couple of matches of Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox live without much repercussion.Also the AP mode worked well. I was able to easily configure the wireless SSID and key.For an Asus product, I believe this is mediocre. I expect a lot from Asus, but this is just okay. For my budget this router was a great choice, but I would only buy this again once DD-WRT becomes available for the router. (Looks like a few may be here soon.)

Based on the other reviews, it seemed that this was the best low cost solution to my problem of weak wi-fi router signal in portions of my home. I will echo that the DD-WRT 3rd party firmware is absolutely necesary to get this unit working in repeater mode. The original f/w didn't work (couldn't connect to my AP router). Found out there was a f/w upgrade available (to fix the "problem" w/ the repeater mode). That enabled the RT-N12 to wirelessly connect to my AP router, but I couldn't get wireless client devices to secure IP addresses. The firmware indicated everthing should be working normally. After dozens of tries using different instructions for repeater setup w/ the DD-WRT firmware, I was finally successful in getting this unit to work as a repeater bridge, using the instructions posted in the DD-WRT Forum; Ralink SoC based Hardware; titled "WHR-G300N - Access Point & Repeater Bridge - HOW-TO". Also recommended are the guidelines for flashing and hard resetting the router to ensure the new firmware loads correctly. Search the forum for "peacock" to get these. Granted that I'm a router configuration newbie, I'm very pleased that I was able to get this hardware working. If you're willing to be patient and persistent w/ the setup, this is a great repeater. I have a >20dB signal boost, and no more dropped connections.

Seller was fine and took this item back, (waiting for the credit)But this item did not work and instructions were awful. I called ASUS and waited 40 minutes on hold to talk to a live person (contrast this with Medialink who answered in less than 1 minute.)As a repeater this did not work despite spending about 8 hours on it. And no help from ASUS.I am done with this company and will use Media Link or customer service focused companies in the future

This ranks as the worst piece of hardware I have ever used, and have used plenty, including flushing routers, rooting cell phones and more. I had my Linksys flushed and running as a repeater in 15', but I guess my Ph.D. in Physics is no match for this router. It is advertised as a wireless repeater and I bought it as such, but after wasting two hours of my life that I will never get back, it goes back tomorrow. It sees my wireless network fine, but when it tries to connect, it hangs forever. I tried a few other alternatives to no avail. I know that if I tried for a few more hours I could (probably) get it to work, but life is too short to struggle with useless hardware.
