Very easy to install. Everything worked out of the box. I took a chance and updated to latest firmware. Everything still works great although I did have to update settings.I was able to use port forwarding and other advanced functions without issue. The new firmware does include a much improved interface.Performance seems top notch. Hope it holds up.

The repeater works great, the instructions are horrible. I will admit from the start that I do not understand the lingo very much, but this is a consumer product that should be easy to setup and work with. The setup interphase has very little explanation taking place when you are using it. The user interphase is,to me, so confusing that once I got it to work I never went back in to try to explore the router's other features. I still would recommend the unit because the repeater signal works so well, and that is the only feature that I have used on this product.

We used two 15 dBi Pole-Mount Yagis and a pair ASUS RT-N12 hooked them up with a pair of TRENDnet TEW-L202 cables to connect two buildings about half a block a part together. Oh... there's a two story brick building in the way that completely blocks the line of sight. In the other location, we're getting 25-30% of the download speed, 15-20% of the upload speed and the same latency as the location with cable internet. One caution: make sure you update the ASUS NT-N12 units to the latest non-beta firmware (released in the middle of the year). The firmware of the units we received from Amazon had bugs that kept the unit in the other building from self-configuring as a repeater.

This is a cheap router, and it shows.The documentation is incomplete and useless.The firmware is truly dreadful, strange and unreliable.If your time and sanity have no value, by all means buy this router and do battle with its supreme crappiness.Seriously, though, it sucks. I'm trying to use it in "repeater" mode. It impersonates the original network that it's repeating, right down to the SSID and WPA passphrase. That makes no sense at all to me. What does a client connect to? The original SSID (which it can probably see), or the "repeated" SSID? I seriously suspect that the emperor no clothes, and that this router is as effective as a nano-magnetic vitality bracelet. It's going back to Amazon.

Everyone else pretty much covered this router. Works great and for the price you just can't beat! Even if you have no clue what DD-WRT or Tomato is, you will like this router.

Very easy setup, nice internal config page using http://192.168.1.1/ Works great on wifi with X-Box 360 and laptops (very strong signal), and wired connections are also running without a hitch. Replaced a flaky Belkin from walmart, ugh. ASUS making good stuff lately.

This was my third router purchase trying to replace a fried Belkin. I'm only using its basic Router functionality. Setup with my Verizon DSL modem and iMac took literally 4 minutes. Connected my PS3 via wi-fi without any fuss. This was in stark contrast to a Cisco M20 which required an hour on the phone with their tech support to get it going and had constant dropouts. Once the Asus was connected, I tried Netflix streaming and I'm getting better picture quality with no dropouts. Highly Recommended.

I bought this router because of its two USB ports; they let you connect a hard drive and a printer - and they become accessible by everyone on the network. Bottom line: this works just as advertised.I read comments here from people who couldn't get this to work, so I was skeptical at first. I hooked up the router to the cable modem, fired up my browser and it automatically showed the router login page. At first the router didn't want to connect to the cable modem, but I decided it could be the modem's fault too - so I simply power-cycled it once whith the router remaining ON. Tada! Those two now recognized each other and a few clicks later I was connected to the internet. No cryptic settings or addresses, it just worked.Hooking up the USB hard disk drive (HDD) was a snap. Just plug it in and after clicking on the suggested "status update" link, the drive showed up on the overview picture (pretty neat). I could immediately start browsing around on the HDD. Then I had to read up on the various access choices (read/write right of the "admin", "family", or whatever,...). Just make the right choice and a few clicks later it's all done.Finally, I connected my laser printer via USB cable and the router recognized it immediately after turning the printer on. The overview page gave me an address for that printer and it was easy to add this with the WINDOWS standard "Add Printer" procedure.After all that installation work was done (30 minutes max), I walked over to my wife's Mac, just to find out it had already recognized the USB hard drive on the network. I haven't tested the printer on her Mac yet.On my laptop, I made sure I now operate my modem at a higher speed setting than when I used my old 802.11b. Signal is stronger throughout my house and backyard and it runs much faster than with the old box (just as expected).Overall - great product, clear enough software interface, all at a great price.This thing has a hundred more features I'll likely never try, but for the basic stuff with added HDD and printer - it's excellent.

This is a decent router, easy to install custom firmware, more specs than it needs. The stock firmware isn't awesome, but it's use-able. The only downside i've found is that WPS Pin is enabled by default and can be cracked in about 10 minutes. Disable it.

I have a good understanding of home networking, I've setup several over the last few years. This router is rock-solid, the first thing you should do is flash DD-WRT. I have had 2 of these running a month straight, with no issues. I have since setup a automatic reboot once a week. If you're thinking about purchasing this router, just do it, it's a great value with open source support!

From a technically challenged person - i had the router hooked up and wireless working in about 10 minutes. Wireless works throughout my house, with my family using Xbox, iPad, and smart phones. We are very happy with this product!

As a networking guy for a school, I have bought a lot of routers over the years, but found a gem I when I picked up one of these. It is easier to use and less hassle than any high dollar router I've ever purchased (I've bought from Apple, Netgear and Cisco). We currently have six of them in use. The great thing about these routers is they give you every feature you really need at a price that makes them nearly disposable (not that any have broken on me yet).

For those who got this router to connect easily, I'm envious. I tried to connect it to 2 computers and it didn't work. I wanted to use it on the repeater mode, which seemed simple enough, and followed the directions but didn't work. I possibly have a defective product because I tried connecting it to my computer via LAN with a phone cord but the light for the LAN did not light up. What made things worse was the tech support. There is no phone USA phone # in the box or manual anywhere, and after surfing online for the #, someone told me a tech rep will call me back possibly tomorrow but doesn't know when. I asked for an online chat support site, and when I clicked on it, there was no one there to help. I also clicked on some links for chat support on their website and there is no such site. It's too bad I could not get this thing working because I wanted to give it a good review but alas, crap happens.

This router has been my worst and I've owned d-link (power supply died) and belkin (radio card died and got unreliable). I have also delt with netgear (plain died) and linksys (couldnt handle bandwidth/users on first one, second one overheaded and burned out the radio card) dying on me at friend's houses.This was my first foray into trying ASUSTek routers and it was a mistake. I picked this one because of the price and the features and that a friend had suggested it was a brand he has used and was very happy with. For me, I'm not so happy.The stock oem firmware was bad. Uptimes of about 5 days. I updated the firmware twice with asus's firmwares and now longest uptime run has been around 30 hours before some failure. Either the router loses it's ip to the modem and wont reconnect or the thing freezes up completely and wont answer any dhcp requests from clients.One day I was backing up my g wireless laptop to the 100mbit wired desktop, moving about 35 gigs of files over the wireless, yea excessive when I could use wired but it needed testing. Transfer went along just fine so I went back to my main pc with 1000mbit wired connection to continue browsing the internet. I have a 6mb dsl line and the router managed to eek out barely enough packets from the lan to the wan connection to complete a dns lookup and download the header of one page. It was like dialup all over again. I killed the transfer on the laptop and speed on the main desktop went to normal. Not good.Unit runs hotter than previous routers. I've had to put a fan on it which helped the stability a bit.Cant say much for the usb features. I tried it with ntfs and ext3 formatted drives, which it read ok. But with the instability I havent left a drive connected on it for very long. I'll keep my nas.

It was simple to install the app. I just set it to repeater and connected to my Xbox 360 and it works fine. This product is inexpensive and works, that is what is important.

This device is exactly what I was looking for. Having a basement that is not hard wired in for internet is no easy task to get internet access to. Fortunately I was able to pick this product up to act as a bridge and it works perfectly. I was also being kicked off of Xbox Live and now I never get the boot. I am even going to buy this product again to replace my primary router and use the base to my bridge for even fast internet access. Buy this product and you should not be disappointed.

This unit is amazing for its value and performance. I have had an access point located in the downstairs back of house for years. It is cabled to the router which is upstairs. Signal in the front of house has been sporadic at best. With this unit set to repeater, the signal is excellent. Everyone is happy now. Setup was easy once I remembered the simple id and password for the access point -- admin and admin. It got all the information it needed to configure itself in seconds. I then disconnected the setup cable that was included and plugged the unit in in a corner of the family room. Amazing technology -- wirelessly taking a weak signal and amplifying it. Previously, I thought I was going to have to run another Ethernet cable to the front of house.

I don't have a cable outlet in my bedroom so I needed someway to connect without running a cable through the house. I made a few mistakes during setup with my LinkSys WRT54G connecting to the ASUS. But once I figured it out it works great. I now have my Dell, Xbox 360 and printer all internet enabled with one spare port left. I recommend it espacially if you want a cheap way to get wifi access for the older xbox 360.

The router worked fine. Easy set-up. I got it to replace two WRT-54g routers that I bridged with DD-WRT, (hoping the N router would make up the distance,) but the strength of the signal I was getting at the end of my house wasn't even close. 1800 sqft 2 story. My download speed at the end of the house was unusable with the Asus. So back to the old routers for now.

This product is perfect. I have been looking for an access point to extended my wireless network because I get no signal in my room. You really do not need the disc for the setup because I plugged it in to my modem and it automatically started producing a signal. The disc is needed for setting up a password. This is a very easy process though. This is worth it's weight in gold. Probably the most inexpensive product I have seen and it works perfectly. A bonus is this is a 3 in 1 product and can be a router, repeater, or and access point. If you have doubts about this product because of the price, DON'T! This is well worth it and now I can enjoy my iPad 2 in my room with blazing fast speed.If I had to pick 1 thing wrong with it then I would say the blue flashing lights. (that's me stretching for a problem). A piece of tape will solve this problem.

The unit both looks great(with the white color) and works great. In fact it works too great: I was trying to input all the usual information for my DSL/PPoE account info, but it can actually find the information by itself. It's also amazing that as soon as you open up your web browser, the setup windows pops up automatically. I have never configured a router with such ease (I had used about 5 routers prior to this one). Oh, almost forgot: the price is hard to beat too!

Not bad for its price. I actually use it as a repeater/extender and has been working fine since. Helps me extend my wi-fi signals to "where no one has gone before", especially to my front pool, which is awesome.I would recommend it highly.

I required a repeater for my household as the source of our internet connection is in the basement. The IP of the router was surprisingly not included in the paperwork but a quick google search pointed me to the right direction. After that the process was very easy and the network was up and running within a matter of minutes.

I have a motorola surfboard modem/router and wanted to extend its signal to the top floor(in repeater mode). I have tried setting it up many times in all sorts of mode (AP/Repeater/router).Worst customer service in the world. I called them up (call goes to mexico) and they are reading out the direction from the manual.It didnt work for me. After connecting it to the computer I never saw the QIS. I am sure there is more to the setup than those 4 step. It works well in the router mode but doesn't work as a repeater.I would rather prefer a device that is just a repeater and works as one than have everything and doesn't work at all.I ended up ordering Amped repeater.

Bought this router 6 months ago, and it worked great with incredible range and download speeds. Now, I can barely get 250Kbs per sec from it while being in the next room! just has become very buggy.It has an incredible amount of options and features which is why this is even more disappointing.

I have a wireless router in the basement. It needed to be there for wiring reasons, so moving it up one floor was not an option. Hence, the signal is weak on the 2nd floor. I had a wire from the 2nd floor down to the basement and added this as a 2nd access point. This solved the problem and was reasonably easy to set up. I didn't try the repeater or router functions, so I can't vouch for those.

My last router was an ASUS one also. Used it for more than 5 years. Had to retire it because my new computer's not compatible with it. Otherwise, it still works just fine.For RT-N12, anyone with a little experience dealing with routers should be able to set it up. So far it's working fine for me. I did not use tomato or DD-WRT. Thought that since it's working fine, I don't need to go through the trouble.

My techie friend advised that I get this router to replace one that I had that didn't have the newest security. Being a non-techie, this was ridiculously easy to set up and get it going. It seems to be working great, and my occasional lags in internet speed that my old router was giving me are gone now. Great deal.

I wasn't looking for a router, and I bought this because it was one of the cheapest available wireless adapters (to connect a TV which has no wifi, but has wired ethernet into a wireless network). The advantage of this as an adapter is that you can connect up to 4 wired-only devices into wireless using just this device. If that wasn't impressive by itself, it extends the range of your existing wireless network. There are very few routers available with this capability, and none at this price range. Setting this up in repeater mode was a 5minute affair. After using it for more than a couple of weeks now, I must say this works very well. Never dropped the connection, and I haven't rebooted it since I powered it on after configuration. Have been streaming movies after movies from Netflix to my wired-TV. It is a bit bulkier than I anticipated, but still looks good (wouldn't call it "great-looking", like some others said though ;-)).As for the router mode, I tested it and it works. But my primary use has been as a adapter, and I can vouch for its performance on that mode: Totally recommended.

I purchased this despite some of the negative reviews. I bought this specifically to use as a repeater for my wireless system. I've used others and they were ok but very expensive. This looked like a pretty good deal. When it arrived, the first thing I did was update it to the current Asus firmware. That being done, I set it up as a router. If you know basics (like the fact that you have to set up a static IP address on the computer you use to set up the repeater) then setup is a snap. Placed the switch in the right position, opened the web page that controls the unit, and started. It found my network and two neigboring networks. Entered the security code for my network, and it was up and running. Great signal and throughput. I'm ordering another one to use on our church network!

Set up is straightfoward and the instructions on set up are adequate. What they do not really emphasize is that the web configuration portion of the set up is the critical part of the process. I am happy with this device and I would purchase one again

If you plan to flash DD-WRT, download build 14896. Earlier builds were too buggy for this router.Another pitfall is that the default radio power setting of 71mW is too high. This setting actually cause WiFi to become unstable. The correct value should be 17mW.Once the right firmware and settings are applied, this is one of the most powerful routers in ths price range.

This router can be installed by anyone that knows how to check email. Fastest and easiest setup I have ever done on a router. For the tech geeks, this router is still fully open for you to play with settings, but beginners can skip the fancy stuff and get right to surfing. Easy to install, easy to modify- great purchase.

Yes. I felt like Homer Simpson with a glazed doughnut.First, if you are thinking of buying this unit and are not comfortable loading Tomato USB on it, then forget it. The Asus software for it is worthless.If you are slightly technical and are willing to search for information on the internet how to install and use Tomato USB or DD-WRT then this is THE router for you.I researched buying a new router for a month. Then spent another month watching prices and confirming my selection. It really came down to the Asus RT-N16. I didn't find another router with this performance and features anywhere near the $100 price point.Got router 3 weeks ago. Installed DD-WRT on it. Configured settings. Played with it for a few days and then installed Tomato USB. I like to test drive a lot of cars before I buy. So I test drove Tomato. I liked it. Even went so far as to install Asus's latest software version 1.0.1.9. Qos was a joke. Reinstalled Tomato. I like the bandwidth meter. The Qos graphs. I have my HP LaserJet 1200 set up as a network printer on one usb port and a network drive on the other usb port.No. I don't know linux. I'm not a supergeek. But I do build my own computers and am willing to read and learn. I still can't understand what I should be doing with linux but I was able to install tomato and configure the router through the gui interface.If you know anything about linux then this is a no brainer.

I will NEVER purchase a product by this company again. The instructions that came with the router were some of the worst I've ever seen. The downloadable instructions on the Website were almost as bad. The simple task of connecting cables was confusing because they neglect to indicate when to use the WAN port vs the LAN ports. A call to customer service (812-282-2787) was as frustrating as I've had in a long time. Roberto, the basic level tech, knew nothing about my issue and took nearly 10 minutes to refer me to a higher level tech (who will supposedly call me back within 2 hours- we'll see). BTW, trying to set this up as a repeater (doesn't work with a Verizon Adtec router) and now as an AP using a Mac laptop. Buyer beware- IMHO ASUS customer service is very, very poor.

Setup was trouble-free except had to install their software for device discovery. After you find the IP address you can just use your own browser for the rest.It has mac address filtering, nonbroadcasting SID, and WPA TKIP, which are all I wanted.Four LAN jacks lets you plug the previous access point into this access point without running another cable.You can change its IP address to a fixed one, but you have to find it the first time.

I purchased two of these routers. First, I needed some extra gigabit ports for wired connections (and this router has four). Second my house is kind of spread out (need wireless coverage for basement, backyard, garage, first level, and upstairs MBR. Thus I needed routers with good wireless range, that could be easily configured as wireless extensions of the wired network in the house. I was not able to configure the stock firmware to accomplish this, but the open source DD-WRT firmware does it with ease. Follow the tutorials at the DD-WRT wiki and you won't have any problems. I also like the presence of two USB ports per router, which have enabled me to plug in some external drives. Thus the routers also serve as network attached storage. I'm still discovering things that the DD-WRT firmware can do. The ASUS routers handle the open source firmware with all the bells and whistles without a problem. These routers are rock solid (the stock firmware leaves something to be desired, sorry ASUS).

I've only been using the Asus RT-N12 router for 2 weeks and it works great. I only use it as a router and not a repeater so I can't comment on the repeater capabilities. It was easy to set up. I have used it with Windows 7 and Linux 11. My apartment is small so I can't test the range but I get 5 bars through the walls into the next room. I highly recommend this router.

Ok Fellow Amazon Shoppers...There are some things that you need to know if you plan on setting this device as a repeater.1. If you purchase multiple units.. CHANGE THE IP of the Device. Or you will have an ip conflict, and they will just restart over and over.2. FLASH to 1.04 ASAP, The units I had come with 1.02, which were not as easy to setup as a repeater in 1.04 it will access you Access point, acquire an IP from your Access Point, and no longer a threat of a conflict. Also the devices will now be assigned an IP by your DHCP so you can easily manage your network.So if you wish to repeat.. Flash first.It will save you time, and in the end you will love this device, the range is amazing...

After 4 and a half hours on the phone with 5 different tech specialist at CenturyLink I finally gave up and returned this Router. At first I tried to set this up myself using the included CD. The instructions call for pushing a button and observing a light on the side of the router. Hard to do when the button and light do not exist. When I called the technical people at CenturyLinks Rescueit service to help, the process gets hung up part way through when you are entering the ip address information. It shows a message box that says "Completed" but the timer never stops and the box never closes. Tried several times to get past this point, (one time waiting 45 minutes)but never could. If you are more techy than the tech people that do this type of thing everyday for a living, perhaps this router is for you.

The router arrived DOA. I used the ASUS FW Restoration Utility to flash the latest FW and it was still DOA. Then used that utility to flash TomatoUSB and I was able to at least communicate with the router, one NVRAM clear later and I was in business. That was weird, good thing I planned to use TomatoUSB anyway... My only guess is that the NVRAM was corrupted from the factory, and only a completely different firmware would change enough of it to be able to get in at all and do a full wipe...With TomatoUSB, the router works wonderfully!IMPORTANT:1. Use the version of the FW Restoration Utility included on the bundled CD, not the latest download from the website. I tried the latest version from the website at first and it didn't work, regardless of what FW I was trying to flash.2. The FW Restoration Utility can only be used if the router is in rescue mode. To force the router into this mode, unplug the power from the router and hold in the restore button as you plug the power back in and hold it until the power light begins to blink. Make sure you have set a static IP on your system before doing this. ASUS documentation recommends 192.168.1.10 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0).

I couldn't figure out how to get it to work with the existing software, so I ended up flashing the router with the software suggested in other reviews (I was not able to flash the 1.04 ASUS software since I was using a Windows 7 computer, so I flashed it with the DD-WRT software) and was able to get it to connect (as an access point) to my Cisco router without too much trouble after that. I am definitely a novice, yet I was able to figure it out. This substantially improved the wireless coverage in the house and eliminated the areas of the house that used to have limited wireless connectivity. Great product!

If you are looking for a high-end home router for a reasonable price you have found it.What makes this router so special? First, lets talk about the hardware. This baby has Gigabit Ethernet on both the WAN and the LAN side, two features that I required for this purchase. It also has draft-N spec wireless, the combination of these two enhancements makes everything faster! Yes, you will notice a speed boost even on G-spec'd wireless clients.The next hardware enhancement is the high-end ARM CPU in this unit, it runs at a blistering 480 MHZ! Thats at least twice as fast as most G-spec'd wireless routers, then theres the 128 MB RAM that allows this unit to use bigger buffers and implement more sophisticated firmware features.Lastly, this unit includes a USB-host with mass storage connectivity, a feature that allows you to add NAS or UPnP capabilities to your network.So as far as hardware goes this unit is in the top five, for sure.Next, lets talk firmware, the ASUS RT-N16 stock firmware includes all the usual wireless features you'd expect like DHCP, NAP, WEP, TKIP, etc, etc. But this unit adds the NAS and the UPnP features I mentioned earlier. With NAS you can share a hard drive with the family and UPnP you can use a hard drive to store and play back streaming video on UPnP enabled devices like Windows or the Sony PS3.I almost always buy routers that are DD-WRT firmware compatible because rarely does the vendors' stock firmware deliver, I bought this unit because it is DD-WRT compatible as well.Well in the case of this unit, the Asus RT-16 firmware is the exception, it does deliver. It has high-end features not normally included in a home router, of particular importance to me, is configurable wireless-switch modes, that allows you to use this unit as more than a wireless WAN gateway. This allows the RT-N16 to act as a wireless switch connected to an existing wired network, or to expand an existing wireless network.No, it does not have the feature-granularity that DD-WRT has, but, what it does have should satisfy the vast majority of home applications.I'm sure there's more stuff that I'm forgetting to mention, but make no mistake this unit is an excellent value that will be competitive for years to come.
