For those unfamiliar, ASUS routers (at least the recent ones) are based on Tomato firmware, with some modifications. The result is powerful for the advanced users, but easy to set up in the basic interface. I can't speak for the DD-WRT implementation on this router, as I can find no real reason to change from the stock Tomato-based firmware.I only have one complaint about this router: it seems to require a full reboot for almost any settings change. It only takes about a minute for a full reboot of the router, but it still warrants mentioning.I have this router set up using a Verizon USB760 modem (from what I've seen, the best compatability is any USB modem that supports an NDIS connection. I set mine in NDIS mode, then connected it to the router, works perfectly. I have tried without NDIS mode, and it never seems to work.) I got this router primarily because it is supposed to handle USB modems better than the N56U (my other router). It IS definitely better. The first thing I noticed is that once you set it up for a USB modem, it disables the WAN port (the N56U keeps complaining that the WAN port is disconnected).Performance is as I have come to expect from ASUS routers: fantastic. This is only single-band N, but the performance is quite good. The NAT and QOS capabilities are some of the awesome features that ASUS includes. I used to be a stalwart NetGear router guy, until I tried the N56U. This router does not disappoint. If you use a USB modem (make sure it supports NDIS), this is the router to get. It won't break the bank (3G USB routers are crazy expensive), performs well, and has all the features you could want.

I very much wanted a wireless router, and after reading the reviews, I decided this one seemed like a good choice.I spent about 60 minutes with my Internet Service Provider and almost 3 hours with ASUS trying to get this device to work. I am certainly not an IT guy, but I have some idea of how to get things to work on a computer. After 4 hours of trying, the ASUS worker, who was doing everything he could to help me (it was the same guy for all e hours), finally told me the product must be defective. He even went so far as to suggest that companies like Amazon that sell other people's products sometimes check the product first and screw up some of the coding in the process. He said it is also possible that the product was not new as advertised on Amazon. Who knows. The only thing of which I am sure is that I wasted 4 hours of my life which I cannot afford to waste. I wasn't even angry during the 4 hours, assuming it would work out in the end. However, once I realized it was not going to work, my frustration level was as high as it has been in some time as I couldn't believe how much time had been flushed down the drain.

This router is one of the easiest setups I have encountered. Select your SSID, channel, encryption pwd, and you're good to go.Unfortunately, I was only good for about 10 days. I suddenly noticed no connectivity. I figured it was my internet connection and called it a night. The next morning, everything was working as promised.A couple of days later, I not only lost connectivity to the internet, I would intermittently lose connection with the router. It took multiple tries to get connected to the router, and even then, the router wouldn't connect to the internet. I bypassed the router and found my internent connection was fine. There just aren't that many adjustable settings to change, so after 2 hours and I am still unable to get online (my internet service is 100% dynamic) I went to the local warehouse club and bought a top of the line model Belkin. Now I have no problems. Not sure what I am going to do with this. Maybe if I get some free time I'll plug it back in and try to troubleshoot the issue. For now, it's a paperweight.

Purchased this about a year ago. Flashed with dd-wrt (instructions and links are elsewhere in these reviews).Has run flawlessly for the past year with maybe two reboots. Now purchasing another to use as a bridge for the upstairs office which needs wired ethernet access (to replace another ancient router with dd-wrt).Very highly recommended, best router I've owned, and the dd-wrt firmware makes it better than the expensive routers from the major manufacturers. Plenty of online documentation for dd-wrt that can do things routers in the $1000.00+ price range do.

I'm certainly not qualified to give a great review, as this is probably the second wireless router I've ever owned, but I'll share what I think of it. Build is decent. Range seems to be good. I bought this router specifically because it said it supported DD-WRT. I could not get DD-WRT to work. After 2 attempts to flash it, It took me 5 hours and every computer I own to un-brick it. I am using the latest ASUS firmware now. I don't think the GUI is that bad, as mentioned by other reviewers. Wireless speeds don't seem any faster than my Surf router it replaced.Would I buy it again? Maybe as an access point, but otherwise, no.

I bought this to replace a hawking N repeater which was glitchy (it had to be reset daily) and only worked in wireless G, despite supposedly being an N repeater. Therefore, this is only a review of its repeating function. As a repeater the ASUS works great.SETUPI've set up countless home networks with a variety of hardware, so I'm not unfamiliar with setup interfaces, though I'm not a pro, nor am I a computer wiz. Setup for me wasn't entirely smooth, but it only took a few tries to get access to the web based wizard. There doesn't seem to be an independent initial manual setup. Unlike the hawking repeaters (both the wireless G HWREG1, and wireless N HWREN1) it works like a true repeater-- it completely mirrors the original access point/router signal using the same SSID. The hawkings set up like a separate AP with a new SSID, and with the hawkings you can modify the MAC address security independent from the original AP. The ASUS firmware doesn't even have an option to do that-- it all runs through the original AP/router settings. Basically, after you connect it to the original AP, there's really no modifications available, other than IP address and password. Also, it supposedly came with the latest firmware, but it's a little glitchy, but nothing terrible. It won't accept a change of the time zone. The ASUS support site says that the latest firmware upgrade was supposed to fix that, so I tried to reinstall the latest firmware, but it didn't fix the problem. This only an issue for log reports, and as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't really matter.PERFORMANCE/RANGEThe throughput is great, with an expected but acceptable amount of speed loss, and the signal is steady and quite far reaching. The range is better than the hawking HWREN1. Right now it's extending the signal from the DIR655 router at the front of the house. The ASUS is in the very back of the house (maybe 70 ft and 4 walls away from the router-- and the router indicates it's connected at 100%), and the client computer is at the back of the lot (maybe 50 ft and two walls from the ASUS--my laptop's wireless utility doesn't tell me at what percentage or db the signal is, but it ranges from 4 bars "good" to 5 bars "excellent").VALUEIt's much cheaper than other N repeaters out there, and I would highly recommend it. I'd say it's a super bonus that it's also a router or AP, so at some point if I no longer need to use it as a repeater, I can always use it as the original AP, whenever my dlink DIR655 dies. It's also nice that at some point I can change the firmware to DDWRT, if I ever need to.So in general, I would highly recommend it as a repeater. I think it's much much better than the hawking HWREN1 hi-gain N repeater, and much cheaper. The D-link repeater has gotten terrible reviews (even from people with Dlink routers), and most other repeaters cost twice the price.

I first bought this to use as a repeater. I was repeating my neighbors wireless (with permission) whose router was about 50 feet away in his house. I would get a strong enough signal to repeat, but more often would have to reset the RT-N12 because I'd lose connectivity or have a very slow connection. This would happen sometimes several times a day. Wireless is a mystical animal. I tried downloading Asus' newer software and some 3rd party firmware that others recommend, but nothing helped. The original firmware has been just as effective as any of the others. At first, my neighbor had AT&T, and the Asus had real problems with that gateway. My neighbor switched to Charter with a Netgear router and that worked a lot better, but I would still drop connectivity on a regular basis. I eventually got my own IP and am using the RT-N12 as a wireless router. Its given me no problems for the last month, and handles the 15mbps speed flawlessly. I called Asus about the problem of losing connectivity, when repeating, with my first purchase. They thought I had a bad radio in the router, so I returned it for another one. The new one did the same thing. I was always able to get a strong signal from the neighbor's router, but for whatever reason, the signal from the Asus would drop and no one in my house could connect until I reset the RT-N12.For the price, its a great router. If you want to monkey around with a repeater or a bridge, this may be worth a try, maybe your setup would work more favorably - who knows.

This router, with Tomato firmware on it (newer version, not the stock) has capabilities that are comparable to enterprise routers. I've purchased 10 of these in the last 6 weeks primarily to use for VoIP applications. It's become our new standard for small to medium businesses. The VoIP capabilities make this router perfect for home/office/small business to perform QoS that allows your VoIP to work well over your Internet connection. It's not exactly self-explanatory. You do need to be a little techy to get the latest firmware loaded and configured to take advantage of all the power this router has.

I am writing this review not to rate the product (it does what it is expected to do), but to warn everybody who might be lured by the "mail in rebate":In order to participate in the rebate, one needs to fill out and print an online form at a website called asus.4myrebate.comthis website is UNBELIEVABLY SLOW.Every step takes about 1-2 minutes wait time, and often brakes up.After I finally got all information entered, the final step failed, and a page came up requesting me "to call a number".==> This is just respectless towards the time of the customer, and smells very much like a deterrent to prevent people from filing cash back claimssorry, but this is not what I expect from Amazon (who explicitely markets the cash back and includes it as part of advertised price), or Asus.==> I will just return the router to Amazon.

I'm not entirely sure why these don't just ship with Tomato or DD-WRT installed. Okay that's not true I know why. But still You would think they would make it simpler to install them. Not that it's hard.Anyway. It's simply amazing hardware with crappy software. So change that as soon as you can. Though most of you probably already know that. I'm running 3 of these in various situations. 2 in homes with Tomato, and 1 in a Small business with DD-WRT. No issues at all. At least none that are the fault of the router itself. Because all three antenna are external, this model is an EXTREMELY flexible device. Add to that the 2 USB ports and MASSIVE flash memory, and it seems obvious they were aiming at the DIY market. At under 100$ it's my Go-to device for almost any network application.

I purchased the home router & it connected wirelessly at 54 mbps as advertised. Within in minutes it dropped to 24 mbps & even slower, rendering the connection useless. I tried changing the channel from "Auto" to 10, but saw no difference in performance. My laptop was ~20' from the antenna. On the 2nd floor of the house, the performance was non-existent. The same laptop works fine with a cisco-linksys wrt54gl wireless-g broadband router we have at the office. Hard wired PC connects at 100 mbps as advertised.I will continue to troubleshoot the router, do firmware updates, etc., but feel these steps should not be necessary for a brand new out of the box device.

Decided to upgrade my old Buffalo wifi router running DD-WRT.After reading good things about this router running DD-WRT I ordered one.In all fairness, I have no idea how the stock Asus firmware runs as immediately flashed it to DD-WRT.I then wasted an entire night trying to get the device to work properly. I am a network administrator and have flashed many a router to DD-WRT. Some very strange behavior exhibited by this unit.Unit would work fine for 30 minutes then the SSID would just disappear and the web interface would be inaccessible even via ethernet port. One time all the status lights were lit but only half-dim.After spending the entire evening trying to get this wifi router to work I threw in the towel and sending it back to Amazon.I'm flummoxed that others have recommended this router. I must have received a lemon. Judging from previous experiences with Asus gear, I should have known better. Seems it is about a 50/50 chance you will get a lemon from this cheap brand.

The ASUS helpline wasn't helpful at all and called 4 times before actually reaching a live person who just stated it wasn't there router but the cable modem. So contacted Comcast and they had me turn in old modem and I purchased a new cable modem. Installed the new cable modem, we are on day 4 of trying to use this router, got everything set up correctly and working fine....for 30 minutes then no internet connectivity. After setting up this router several times and calling the support line determined YES the router is defective. I did get a $10.00 refund from Amazon to cover shipping fees which was very nice. I moved to an apartment that made running Ethernet from the router to the bedroom somewhat difficult. I needed Ethernet as I have a couple of printers that are wired. Powerline networking didn't appeal and is relatively expensive.Search for a solution turned up wireless repeaters. I use Amazon and Newegg reviews to ferret out the best price/performance then go with the lowest shipping cost which is usually Amazon. OK, I'm cheap. The Asus RT-N12 is one versatile unit. Use it a a router, access point (AP) or repeater. Simple switch to select what mode you need.Setup was not plug-and-play. I needed to read the instructions (ADHD makes this tough) which I didn't find that clear (don't recall why).It all worked although there was an error/warning message about one printer being on a different subnet. Checked but it was all 255.255.255.0 but I may not have understood the message. The printer works fine and the message has never reappeared.I am using the stock Asus firmware and see no reason to change. My needs were simple and I don't need anything more although I may change just to see what the alternatives are. The option to upgrade is pretty cool though.Speedtest.net showed throughput same as the Belkin N600 router I use (also reviewed by me on Amazon) both wired and wireless.I stream music from a PC via Subsonic and a Roku box using the repeater and have no issues there but that doesn't take a ton of bandwidth. The overall experience is very favorable. The white case is different but not in a bad way (shades of Apple?) and the more common blue LED's are welcome BUT being in the bedroom it would be nice to have the option to dim (autodim would be great) them at night.I thought the case was reasonable quality given the sub-$40 price.I have picked up a number of Asus products over the last year or so (motherboards, a fabulous 26" 16:10 monitor (also reviewed on Amazon) and video card) not by design but because they offer great performance/features/design at competitive prices. To conclude, great deal, does what I need but I only use the repeater function. Buy with confidence but you may need to read the manual.

I've attempted to use many routers in the last few years. DDWRT is one of the main requirements, and some of the routers with Atheros chipset (like Netgear WNDR3700), while phenomenal with stock firmware are not very stable with DD-WRT.After awhile, I gave up on the most dual-band routers on the market, and, following the advice on DDWRT forums, tried this one. It's more than sufficient for the needs of my household (which are pretty high, considering the amount of wireless devices in the house), yet very stable -- I pretty much *never* have to reboot it. It's fast enough to stream mp4 video to XBMC endpoint, and signal is much stronger than with most dual-band routers with internal antennas I've tried (WNDR3700 with stock firmware being an exception). In short, I've been using it for over a year now, and couldn't be happier. Don't see myself looking for a replacement anytime soon.

I wanted to use this to extend my office network. We use Comcast with their cable modem of the month, an Apple Extreme Base Station router (both in the basement), and power-over-Ethernet (PoE) to supply both data and power to our ASUS access point on the second floor. I was pleased when I plugged our PoE cable into the power outlet on the ASUS, and it worked without a problem--that was an experiment on our part, since I couldn't find any documentation that said it would work. I set the ASUS router switch on the back to Access Point, and very shortly I had a great signal throughout the building on an open network called "ASUS". That was the easy part. When I connected my MacBook directly to the ASUS router and tried to figure out how to set up a password, I couldn't get anywhere. The disk included doesn't work on Macintosh, and nothing on the website told me how to proceed. So I lived with an open network for a few weeks, until a friend convinced me to give it another try. So, using Apple's AirPort Utility, I located my Base Station. On its "Summary" page, it had a link to "Wireless Clients". Clicking on that allowed me to see DHCP clients, listed by MAC address and IP address. I tried using my browser to login to all the IP addresses that I couldn't recognize until I finally was able to login to the ASUS page, with the default user and password both being 'admin'. (It would have been easier to discover the IP address of the ASUS router if I had unplugged everything else from the network, but I didn't want to do that during the work day, so I just kept trying IP addresses until I found the right one.) From there, I could change the name of the network (SSID) to match that of the Base Station network, and I could add password protection both to the router itself (under LAN settings) and to the extended network (under Wireless settings). It is a great router, once it is set up. Setup was a bear however.

I'm an electrical engineer and I have generally had great experiences with Asus products: until now. I ordered the RT 12N (B1) router while staying in a hotel, so when I experienced 0.5Mb/s wireless speed via this router, I figured that it was typical of a hotel network. Now I've moved into an apartment and Comcast is providing 24Mb/s download speeds. I get these speeds direct from the cable modem and even through the RT-12N (wired) ethernet ports. But the RT-12N wireless ethernet speed is between 0.18 and 0.5 Mb/s. In fact it's so slow that sometimes the speedtest website "crashes" the speedtest. I've only had this router for 60 days. I've found someone else on the Internet who has had the same problem. (Yes I've uploaded the latest firmware and the so-called 30/30/30 reset process.) I imagine the quality control is weak at Asus. Asus is definitely my new favorite router brand. After running Linksys routers for several years, I became frustrated with having to constantly restart the router every so often. This router has been running non-stop (in repeater mode) for the past 8 months and have never needed restarting. The signal from it is very strong. I use it in repeater mode to boost the signal on the 2nd floor of my home so now with my main router downstairs and this repeater upstairs, I have full signal virtually anywhere in my home.Setup is a breeze, in under 5 minutes this was up and running in repeater mode. I love the fact that this unit can be used as a router, repeater or access point. In the event you want to upgrade your main router, this unit will still be of use in repeater mode.In addition, the router is very fast, pages load faster and download speeds are faster (in a house with 15+ devices all accessing the internet) changing over to this router has made a dramatic difference in how fast pages load. Torrents also generally seems to receive higher download speeds than under my previous router.

The review Inexpensive Router that Works Well, April 8, 2012was primarily why I purchased the RT-N10+ and it was a good purchase.A few additional items might help others. The DD-WRT web site has a wealth of information, and a whole bunch of noise. There is a problem with the version that DD-WRT offers in the in the router database. Cllent mode does not work, and if you dig well down into the Forum you can learn that you should avoid versions 16785 (broken Client feature) and the unstable 17201. The version I used was in their cleverly concealed archive at: [...] where you find RT-N10+ build 16454. Navigate around and find the versions for all sorts of routers.I used the 90 second reset (30 powered, 30 no power, 30 power) to get back to square one, many times. And it took me days to finally get to [...] which are the instructions I needed after easily loading the DD-WRT firmware.

I want to operate in a Bridge mode. This router has a Repeater/Bridge mode. My main modem and wireless router are upstairs. I want multiple Ethernet connections in my entertainment center downstairs (for bluray player and desktop PC hooked to the TV). Bridge/Repeater mode basically duplicates your SSID on the main wireless router upstairs. This extends the wireless range better downstairs and also allows me to use the wired Ethernet adapters on the ASUS.The documentation was useless. It mentions that you just plug in the router and start your web browser and it will come up magically to the QIS (Quick Internet Setup). Did not work that way. It does mention that you do not have a proxy server set in the web browser. I don't.Then installed the CD and at the point where it tells you to connect the computer through Ethernet to the WAN port, it does not detect the computer (I forget the exact error that it gives.)So here is what I did (at least after trying so many different things, this is what I think I did to make it work):-Changed the switch on the back to "repeater"-Plug in ASUS RT-N12-Connect the PC to the WAN port.-Start your web browser-enter "192.168.1.1" for the web address.-Log into the Router with "admin" as the user and "admin" as the password-You will see the ASUS configuration screen. On that screen is three boxes going down the middle. The top one has a picture of a wireless router with a globe on it. The second one is a picture of the ASUS router and it will say "Repeater" (or something to that effect) to the right of the picture. The third box has a picture of a computer.Click on the top box (the one with the globe)-Connect to your main router (enter the passkey)-Go to the Administrator section on the left and change the admin password. (Write it down on a paper and tape it to the bottom of the ASUS!)-logout of ASUS-unplug the ASUS-Move the PC from the WAN port to the LAN port-Plug in the ASUS-Wait for IP addressShould now work. (I might have a little bit of above wrong...NOTE: now that it is all set up, i tried to get back in (connect to the WAN and tried 192.168.1.1) and it come up that it can't display the web page. (So i couldn't re-verify everything above that i wrote from memory). I'm guessing that now that it is connected it has adopted a new IP address from the main router or maybe because it is in repeater mode that generic base address wont work now...maybe I could try some other numbers...or maybe turn off the main router, re-power the ASUS and see if stays at 192.168.1.1 hmmmm...can always press the magic reset button on the back of the ASUS and start over...hah!Why can't these companies just write down the exact steps for each basic scenario?!?! (just in case the magical "plug it in and it works" scenario doesn't work. ;-)

I've used this for 2 years now as a repeater to pickup the Marina's wifi signal in my covered (metal roofed) slip and extend it out to my houseboat where I couldn't get it. There's no walls to obstruct it, just a couple of other houseboats and floating houses in the way. Distance from this router to my boat is 710 feet. I get a good strong signal from it and couldn't be happier. For the price you can't beat it in this application.

I was looking for a cheap router to install DD-WRT on, so that I could connect all my wired devices to my wireless network. What I found was this, and it was simpler than I thought it could be. Just about five minutes after reading the easy directions, I flipped the switch on the back to the proper setting, selected the network on my computer, and typed in the password. Simple as that. Now my PC, Xbox, and Playstation all are online, and hundreds of dollars cheaper than buying a bunch of individual wireless adapters. Quite happy with the ease of use, and the price.

The Asus router is an excellent choice for a single band router especially if you're thinking of customizing. As soon as I received it I installed the open source alternative firmware called "DD-WRT". Because of its internal architecture with lots of extra memory this router is a perfect fit for it. I now have a compact Linux server / router that consumes just a few watts of power!

Had this router almost exactly 3 months and yesterday it just stopped working for no reason. I tried different outlets and also different power supplies with no luck. Up until yesterday it worked great. Unfortunately I can not trust Asus with their wireless products.

I purchased this router with the intent of flashing it to DDWRT. It works well. Hasn't rebooted itself, acted odd, or given me any problems. I can't complain, especially at this price point.

This does not work as a wireless-N router as advertised. When in N mode (default) the speed at speedtest.net was about .1-.9 MB per second and many times the page wouldn't even load. From other similar reviews it sounds like this is a fairly common issue- unfortunately I didn't see them before purchasing. I called ASUS support and they seemed to know what the problem was right away and instructed me to downgrade the speed setting to G. So I paid for an N router, but only got a slower G speed. Now I'm upgrading my wireless speed, but probably won't even be able to take advantage of the extra speed. It's all very frustrating!

I bought this router with the intent of using its repeater mode to strengthen a WiFi signal from elsewhere in my house. While my laptop's internet connection did seem to work better with this in close proximity, it caused WiFi connectivity issues for others my house. It seemed like the devices didn't know which router to connect to since they both effectively had the same internet connection, just one router piggybacking off of the other. This would result in long initial WiFi pairing times, or dropped connections in other cases.Once I installed DD-WRT firmware though, it has worked much better for me. I started using the "Bridge" mode, which can be thought of as a WiFi router-to-router link that uses WiFi for no other reason. This resolved the connectivity problems with other WiFi devices in the house, since they only connect to the one AP that's directly connected to the internet. This repeater in bridge-mode allows me to plug a network cable directly into it and my laptop, and my laptop sees the connection as just a regular LAN connection. I really like that, because the repeater has a much more powerful radio than either the external USB card I bought, or the internal WiFi card of my laptop. This repeater keeps a pretty stable link to my primary AP in the house with the direct internet connection, I haven't had any further issues with WiFi in my house and my internet has just been a lot more snappy and responsive. No more laggy/dropped Starcraft II games due to my Wifi either.

Followed the highest rated comment's tutorial on how to install dd-wrt, which was very simple and worked great. I then configured dd-wrt to use the router as a bridge, which has also been working great.Definitely worth the price.
