I am a computer engineer and consider myself fairly savvy with computer parts. I should explain that the Asus RT-N12B router has worked very well over the past 2-3 months that I have owned it.First of all I intended to use this router a wireless bridge to connect my household's Magic Jack phone service to another wireless router located in the garage along with my cable modem. First thing I did was re-flash the firmware to install DD-WRT which the router explicitly supports. I used the custom firmware to enable wireless bridging with the router to allow it to wirelessly connect to the garage router as if it was a wired connection sharing the internet. The ASUS RT-N12B router located in the kitchen about 40-50 ft away with plenty of walls in between received a signal quality of about 30% on wireless-N 2.4Ghz frequence since that is what it supports. The connection stays up reliably enough where almost all phone calls have made it through fine without any issues. There was only one particular incident where the router did go down and become unresponsive but a simple reset by pulling the power and resetting the router did the trick. The router has gone down once in the 2-3 months that I've had it which is pretty nice.Installation of the firmware and setting up wireless bridging was a little tricky the first time through. I would hope ASUS did more to make these popular features with DD-WRT be more easily set up. From finding the correct firmeware to having the computer recognize the router etc wasn't quite smooth sailing but the online tutorials made it significantly easier. I do understand this is a seperate firmware that ASUS has no hand in supporting so its no big deal. I would definitely recommend this product as a reliable wireless home router if someone needed it. I did not quite use it as a typical router but I would assume it would work fairly flawlessly considering it can keep a phone service in the house working well.The box and packaging was the usual manual and cd which is more than can be said with certain manufacturers. The router itself is very white and plasticky feeling which is fine for me. As long as it did the job and doesn't feel like it well on me for poor manufacturing. A lot of detailed instructions I didn't really need but its there for those that do. Overall another solid product by ASUS.

This is my first review so please don't throw heavy stones at me. Bought this router/access point/repeater at Fry's on sale in hope to replace couple not very reliable Trendnet routers. I used this product for couple months and upgraded its firmware twice(latest installed 2.0.2o) in hope to improve Internet, my Brother MFC-8680DN High-Performance Laser All-in-One Machine with Networking and Duplex printer and my Western Digital My Book Essential 3 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive availability. It did with some success. I have 3 Desktops, 1 Fujitsu Windows 7 laptop, 1 Samsung 7" Android tablet, and 2 Samsung Android cell phones in my home network.Here are why 3 out 5 stars:1. It won't see USB 3.0 hard drives. At all.2. EzQoS is nice idea but haven't work for me yet at all.3. It won't recognize computer names in your network often, very often.4. Link to Asus website support page is wrong, it directs you to RT-N13U model that is different from RT-N13U B1's. Their firmwares are not cross compatible.5. Applying priorities to your computers on stock firmware is almost impossible because refresh rate is too high for humans.6. It is designed to sit on the table, so if you want to hang it on the wall you have to drill holes in its base.7. No 1000 Mb support8. Asus RMA is a pain in the butt.9. DD-WRT for this router is not very reliable as I know to this date. I didn't installed it though in order to avoid brickmaking.Pro's1. It has 1 USB port. For USB 2.0 devices only2. It works fine with my Brother networked printer. Please assign the printer(on it's menu) static IP like 192.168.1.15 or so. I left range of IP's from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.20 for static IPs, and set rest of available IPs(21-254) to the router to manage.3. Nice bright, blue, always blinking lights. Not for bedrooms.4. Works fine with ASUS 5-Port Gigabit Green Switch and VIP Port (GX-D1051/V2) wired switch.5. Wireless speed is OK. I can't judge it fairly because non of my wireless adapters made by ASUS.In conclusion, it is good product, but not the best for its bucks.

After reading lots of reviews on this product and other wireless extender products, I decided to purchase this router because of it's very reasonable pricing and because of the success many people have had with this router. Well, it could just be me, but it took me over two hours to figure out how to get this thing to work in my house. Our current wireless router gave us a very weak signal in the upstairs bedroom which is a bit far away from the router (through a couple of walls, up the stairs, and towards the front of the house). I had a Roku HD (the cheapest version) and it would not pick up the signal to stream Netflix on it. Previously, I had the most expensive version of the ROKU ($99.99) in the bedroom and that worked fine, but the cheaper version does not have extended wireless capabilities and would not pick up the wireless signal to finish its setup.OK, so I installed the ASUS utilities and opened up the user manual and followed the instructions and connected the router according to the diagram, and set it to repeater mode. At first, it seemed like it was working because the laptop upstairs had a couple of bars more on it and surfing was a bit faster. However, the Roku would not finish its setup and complained about the mac address (I can't remember the error, it told me to check the router and the mac address). While I was surfing around for a solution to this, the bars dropped on the laptop and my wireless connection went back to how it was before I had the repeater set up. I also tried testing it by taking my netbook (a different machine than the one I was using in the upstairs bedroom) outside in the front yard. As soon as I got near the sidewalk, my excellent connection was reduced drastically and it was behaving like it was trying to find a wireless signal. I read that some people had to set up a static IP so I tried that on the laptop that I was running the ASUS utilities and that didn't fix the problem for the Roku. I don't remember all the different things I tried but in the end, I was back to where I were with a bad connection in the upstairs bedroom. I was about to box it up and ship it back, it seemed so flaky, but then decided to try it as an Access Point since I saw some people had luck with it that way. I had to go out and buy another ethernet cable to connect it this way but after setting it up as an Access Point and placing it in the same room next to my current router, the Roku worked in the upstairs bedroom! The laptop still only shows 2 bars and performance on it is not as great as I hoped, but I know it's working because the Roku now streams Netflix. In the end, I am keeping this router, it's been a week and we're happy not to have to return the Roku and at least we have a better wireless connection on some machines. I took my netbook out in the front yard and it was picking the signal much better, and I also used my macBook in a guest house in my backyard (through two walls) and it was picking up the signal just fine. I didn't have to do anything with the IP address. Had I just set it up as an Access Point in the first place, I probably would've saved myself some headaches. The instructions are scant, doesn't quite explain things too well, it assumes success if you follow it step-by-step with very little troubleshooting help. I would've given it 4 stars except for the fact that if it hadn't been for the reviews and help of other people's comments on Amazon, I probably would've returned it and bought something else. It seems to be a hit or miss on getting it to work, so buy it if you totally understand what you're doing (which apparently, I didn't!).

I had a Linksys WRT54GL that I had used for years, first with stock firmware, then with DD-WRT, and finally with Tomato. After 5+ years of trouble-free service, the wi-fi was getting spotty (not to mention it only supports 802.11b/g), and my quest began to find another router that would provide the same rock-solid reliability while also providing more features.I had seriously considered getting a dual band router, but after looking at the technology I possess, I determined that only one device would profit from the 5GHz band. That wasn't worth the price premium a dual band would command. Ditto for the new 802.11ac spec. And considering that none of my tech was known to be triple-channel capable, I decided that 802.11n 300 would provide all of the bandwidth I need. All of this research led me to this excellent offering from Asus.Like some other reviewers, I can't comment on the stock firmware. I bought this router with the intention of loading Tomato on it as soon as I got it out of the box. Stability is of critical importance to me, and with Tomato, this router has been absolutely solid. I don't think I've had to power cycle it at all. As far as range is concerned, it blankets my house with signal and has had no problems handling multiple users with multiple devices. I don't do much with torrents, so I can't comment on that aspect, but the hardware in this box is top notch and the features that are unlocked with Tomato make this a powerhouse of a router.Here's hoping this router provides as many troublefree years of service as my old Linksys WRT54GL did (which I'm still holding on to as a backup).

I give the router a 5-star rating for its performance, ease of use, and since this is the fourth one I have installed in as many months, the Asus router line is dead simple to setup and maintain. I also love the utility that allows me to see each and every router on the network and control them individually without having to try and find it on the network--- nice touch and yes it helps that they are all the same brand. Every router function works like it should. I would like to see it pick up the MAC addresses when filtering so that I can pick from a list, but entering them is not that bad either as this particular router is setup for my office and I only use it with my computer and phone.Now onto the completely disappointing part and it gets a 1-star rating. One reason for me purchasing this particular unit (and sending a few extra bucks for it) is that I wanted to be able to connect my printer (a Canon L170 laser multi purpose fax/ copier/ printer machine) to the USB port so that I didn't have to plug it into my laptop every time I wanted to use it. The software did create the port and do everything right--- but it just won't print. I did some digging to figure out if there were any other settings to work with and then I found the list of compatible printers. To complicate things the printer is not on the list, Windows 7 64-bit is also not that high on the list for the number of compatible machines.Now, I do understand that the router can be upgraded to DD-WRT open source firmware and I have not investigated whether it has a larger compatibility list or not--- but honestly I have thought about it and have decided to leave that alone as it is a larger can of worms that I really don't need to open at this time. With that I wish that Asus would have spent the time and made it more universally worthy of a print server and I would have been more than happy to spend another $20 to have that happen right out of the box.Overall impression is that the router is as good as our other Asus units. This one does not have the external antennas which makes it a cleaner foot print as it stands up too. I know the next printer will be a wired/ wireless network printer as that is how most "modern" printers are equipped.In a nutshell I have used Cisco, Linksys, Buffalo, D-Link, and Netgear--- Asus trounces all of them in terms of being user friendly and working like it should. I don't mind taking the time to do things right, but when you fight the equipment to get it to the point of getting anywhere--- that is where I draw the line. The last two Cisco based routers that I configured worked--- for a while. The first one ended up being recycled after I ran it over with my truck on purpose as it was that bad in dropping signal and the other was for a friend--- it was returned and an Asus was installed as they had tons of problems with it dropping signal and causing a ton of havoc with network printing.

The 128MB of RAM in this router makes a world of difference to anything I've used before in the past. I cannot comment on the stock firmware, because I flashed this thing as soon as I got it out of the box. I must say that this was the EASIEST router to flash. I followed the instructions here: [...]Basically all you need to do is run the ASUS Firmware utility, choose the Tomato/DD-WRT firmware, and wait a few minutes. Done. No command line, no Telnet, etc.Once Tomato was up and running I have a solid 110MB of RAM free at any given time. I have at least 10 computers running through this at home, with probably a dozen smart phones and tablets connected wirelessly too. I've never had interruptions, or wireless stuttering even with all these devices running through it.It's awesome that the wired ports are gigabit ethernet, and there's also two USB ports. I hooked a USB flash drive to the router, and in Tomato's settings, I have that drive shared through Windows SMB, which works nicely. Also, I have turned on DLNA, so any media files I drop onto the drive, they show up on my Xbox 360.I can't comment on how far the wireless range reaches, but my two story house is completely covered, and I even get signal while in my basement.If you're looking to flash custom firmware on a router, you will NOT be disappointed with this one. The ease of flashing, the speed of the hardware, and just overall features this router offers, are well worth it. Don't waste your time with a $30-50 router. Spend a little more on this one and you'll be set.

So far I really like this router, it only took a few moments to setup. I have above average technical skills, so I simply unboxed it, and plugged it in replacing my current router. My computer automatically connected to the router to enter the WiFi SSID & Password, since I used the same info used on my previous router all my WiFi devices connected fine. I then proceeded to download the latest firmware from Asus and install it, this took about 5-6 minutes. I had a bit of trouble after updating the firmware as it seemed like the first computer that connected to it placed a lock on it, so I powered off the router, and turned it back on, and ran to my computer to refresh Firefox so it was the first. It also seemed to forget the WiFi SSID, but kept the password I previously programmed in. Once that was fixed, I plugged in a printer (Okipage 14e) that was currently plugged into a computer. This is one of the main reasons I bought this router. I was able to quickly setup the printer for LPR printing. Sweet! No more worrying about if that PC the printer was hooked up to was in Sleep mode. Now all 5 computers in my house can print to the printer any time.I haven't done much more with this yet like hooking up a USB storage device yet, or messed with the Asus cloud service. The app for Android has quit a few poor reviews, so hopefully they'll continue to improve this.So far just a few bad things:The router has a hard time detecting network devices connected to, and will only show the MAC address, and sometimes show the Name. It would also be nice to be able to see what devices were connected via LAN and those via WiFi on the Client Status page.When handing out DHCP addresses, it seems to hand them out with random IP addresses in the 192.168.1.x range, and doesn't hand them out in order. For example my android tablet was given 192.168.1.2, and one of the PC's was given 192.168.1.79. At some point I may setup the DHCP server to manually give IP Addresses.I'll update this review if I have any issues, or as I mess with more of the features.

You know, sometimes we are just stupid. Everybody gets bit by the bug now and again. For example, I recently bought this brand new router for my home network because I wanted to install an external drive to use for back ups (recent hard drive crash - few backups...oops). I shopped around and chose the RT-N16 router based on various reviews posted on Amazon and other sites. Those reviews showed love for the router, but not so much for the router's firmware.So I got the router, and immediately downloaded and installed the "recommended" firmware (DD-WRT). Now the reviews said that using DD-WRT, I would need to be at least "moderately" tech savvy. I thought that would mean 'not afraid to go into settings and change a few things around'. What they actually meant was "Are you within just a few hours shy of getting your Computer Science Doctorate?" Now, I'm not a computer noob, I've built my own computers, done some programming, I am regularly changing settings and experiment with my home network, computer, etc. but this was just way, way over my head. I have to give a great big thumbs DOWN to DD-WRT. I followed their wiki directions to the letter (what I could translate) and failed at every turn to accomplish my desired task.Anyway, I spent over a week in research and attempts trying to set up my network drive (I do enjoy solving technical problems, and I'm stubborn...) all to no avail. After talking to a couple friends, who suggested I just buy a router with the capabilities I wanted built in (which, of course, I had already done with this router) and try that. Finally, after trying a couple more versions of the software I was using, I decided to give the OEM operating system a try.It was so easy. It did what I wanted to do easily, and without the Computer science degree. It even shared the drive with my DVD/Blu-ray, so my saved movies can be watched on my tv. It has a nice, friendly GUI, scans things for you so you don't have to try to remember complicated settings, and reads hard drives formatted in NFTS. It has a function to share iTunes libraries across the home network. It has a function to make my drive accessible across the internet. Yeah, I was an idiot for not trying the OEM first.So, I'm liking the router a lot more now. Thanks ASUS!

My core router is a DLink DIR-655 and I was looking to use the RT-N12 to extend the wifi range in my house without running cables. While this router does achieve that end goal, getting there can be frustrating. First of all, if you are planning to use this as a repeater and want to run DD-WRT, go check the database and you will see that the firmware has not been updated since 2010. Not only that, many are reporting problems with the DD-WRT firmware in the forums and have reverted to the stock Asus 1.0.1.4 firmware.Unlike many home routers, the modes of this Asus router are controlled via a slider switch in the back of the unit, there is no way to change modes in the software alone. Initial config is done by connecting directly to the router via Ethernet cable and accessing the pre-configured IP address. Once the router was placed in repeater mode, I had tremendous trouble setting a static IP address and getting the unit to work on my network. I eventually abandoned this method, left the Asus router set to receive DHCP and set an IP reservation on my core router. This way the Asus will always get the same IP and it works fine as a repeater. I don't know why, but it just would not work with a static IP. If all wireless clients in your network are 802.11N capable then you can run the fastest speed, if not you will need to run a step down to support 802.11G. This router has one antennae and cannot do both. Connecting to the SSID of the core network is fairly straight forward. The trouble with this router is that it is very finicky and may take several attempts to get the config to stick and working properly. Don't give up if it doesn't work perfectly after your first try. Any change to the core configuration of the network (SSID, IP scheme, security settings, etc) will need to be manually propagated to the Asus and you will need to go through the whole connection process again. The software configuration options are very limited in repeater mode and the interface takes some getting used to, especially coming from the DLINK, Linksys, etc world. The one thing seriously lacking in this router is logging, there just isn't anything reported in repeater mode.Configuration eccentricities to keep in mind:-Router modes are controlled via a PHYSICAL switch on the back of the unit, NOT in the software.-If you switch between DHCP and static or if router cannot get dynamic IP for any reason, IP address reverts to what was last manually set in router mode.-Speed changes only take affect in "router" mode and then will stick once you change to repeater mode. You cannot change this setting while in repeater mode.-Single antennae so can only operate at 802.11N (300Mbps) or 802.11G (145Mbps). This means the uplink speed to the core + connecting clients will be affected. If you have any G clients, leave at the lower speed or they will be unable to connect.

Bottom Line:I don't often give 3 stars but this router should not have a warranty void since the default firmware is so painfully bad. That said, the router is great post DDWRT but I would HIGHLY recommend those not as savvy to go with something else. Per my experiences, it will eventually become dismally slow and unbearable in terms of throughput if more than one user connects.Pros:Price for value good at twentyUSB Printer function (not tested will update the review when I do so)flashed with DD-WRT it's nice and fastCons:firmware reflashing will likely be necessaryNotes:If you use comcast you need to clone your MAC addressReviewThese are strong words but the default firmware plain and simple sucks. A flat-mate of mine purchased this router as well and I flashed it for her and the difference between hers and mine is night and day. It has slowdown issues, it's clunky and for anyone networking savvy it just screams flash the firmware now! Even if you are only somewhat computer savvy I urge you to research flashing at your own risk in the provided mini guide at the end of this review. On that note, for those who don't know why firmware flashing is risky it is due to the warranty/return void (why I have not flashed mine yet as I may return it to amazon... not sure) and if you lose power during flashing or interrupt it the router will "brick". Meaning it will become un-usuable and therefore like a brick. If you bought this and you are at your wit's end at how slow this is and DO NOT want to return to amazon (and I recommend a return for those not networking-ept), here is a guide to reflashing.NOTE, I AM NOT LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES YOU INCUR ON YOUR ROUTER. You do the following at your own risk!!Download the firmware1. Go to dd-wrt.com and paste /site/support/router-database (amazon links disappear)2. type in 13u and click on b13. download asus-to-ddwrt.trx< note that I did not need the .bin but you may in the future. Just opt to flash it after you restart in the ddwrt interface >Upgrade your router to DD-WRT1. Connect your computer to a LAN port2. make sure windows notes itself as being connected (even without a net connection)3. Open up a browser and type http://192.168.1.14. type admin for username and for password at the prompt5. if there is a setup prompt telling you to check the ethernet cable just click "Back Main Page"6. go to Advanced Setting > Administration > Firmware Upgrade7. select the asus-to-ddwrt.trx file8. wait patiently! If you don't you risk bricking your router.Again I wouldn't recommend a flash if I didn't feel it was necessary but for this router, if you don't flash it, it is at most a 2 star product. After flashing it does become 4-5.Hope this helps.

I bought this to replace a useless wireless router (Netgear 7550) that I purchased from at&t. I was having tons of problems from the at&t router that their tech support could not help out, so I bridged it into this one. It was very easy and the Asus router walked me through the entire process. I am a hobbyist Linux user and was expecting to install the DD-WRT firmware to be happy with this router. I did not like the stock firmware that came on it 1.1.something something version. I upgraded it to [...] (3.003.434 or something like that) I really like this firmware and have had no problems at all. The at&t router had a bad range and would not allow me to use two XBOX 360 consoles running at the same time through the network. Not even with port-triggering. This router has a UPnP option that works with things like that and is very simple to configure. basically you just enable it and it does the rest. I worked on the Netgear 7550 from at&t for months and could not get that to work.I am very happy with this router and it ease of use, and its ability to grow with my network. If you don't like the stock firmware, check out the other Asus firmware upgrades before you go to Tomato or the DD-WRT.

Since purchasing this back in September of 2012, this router has actually risen in price. It's a nice solid piece of equipment, but the firmware that came with mine was woefully lacking. There has been newer firmware released by Asus, and I've heard that it is better. However, I immediately put TomatoUSB ([...])...the Kernel 2.6 (experimental) for MIPSR2 Routers (Ext version) on mine and haven't looked back. With this router and this firmware I've got everything I need.Out of the box, on the stock firmware, the wireless signal was a little weak. This unit only provides 2.4 GHz band. It is not a dual band router. The 5GHz band offered by other routers is almost useless in my situation anyway, as my signal has to travel through many walls and floors. After upgrading to the TomatoUSB firmware, I was able to tweak the signal strength and get what I was expecting...solid coverage throughout my house.Overall, this is a good piece of hardware with Gigabit ports and decent signal strength out of the box. It gets even better if you're willing to go with a 3rd party firmware and unlock its full potential.

The first RT-N12 I received was DOA, but was sold as "like new." Sounds like several people have had this experience. Second time around, I went with a new one for 10 bucks more. I am comfortable with DD-WRT firmware, and would not even give ASUS' firmware a chance after reading the reviews on it. Some claim they have fixed their problem, but why bother when DD-WRT is going to be so much better anyway?A lot of the problems I read on this site in the one star reviews seem like the kind of problems that DD-WRT would help. One downside is that with the small memory size, only the "mini" build will fit on it. For most home users this is a non issue, but if you want to run OpenVPN or another fancy application on your router you need to move up to at least the RT-N16.If you are unfamiliar/intimidated by third party firmware, don't be too put off by most of the terse warnings on DD-WRT's website. Earlier routers were much easier to brick than these more modern ones, ASUS included. Its still best to follow instructions step by step. There's more margin for error than they'd have you believe, in my opinion. For a $40 router, if you are unhappy with its performance under stock firmware, why not give it a try? In fact, why not give it a try on whatever your current underperforming router is? It might just save it and you won't need a new one!

*Update 10/07/2011*After much frustration with my entire home network, I've updated my entire network to use this as my main router. There was something odd using stock firmware with my two routers together. I set up the Asus RT-N12 as my router and my netgear WNR3500L as my repeater. After loading Tomato on my Netgear, I still couldn't get it to play nice with the Asus RT-N12. So i bit the bullet and flashed the Asus with DD-WRT. After configuring the new firmware, they started playing nice. It's been a week and I've had a stable connection ever since.The Asus RT-N12 is a very capable repeater for the price. I don't know how it works as far as a router or as an access point since I'm haven't used it in that fashion. As a repeater, it works great after I updated it to the latest stable ASUS firmware.UsageI am using it as a repeater for two computers in my office. I have a wired switch that I could have used, but didn't want to drag a cord halfway through my house where everyone walks, so I have wanted a wireless bridge.DesignIt's not the best looking router around, but who really buys a router based on looks alone. I like the white shell around the top and bottom and the silver ribbon around the middle where the lights are displaying what is and isn't hooked in.The inclusion of the 3 way switch makes it super simple to switch between a router, repeater, and wireless access point. It comes with a uplink port and 4 10/100 ports. The RT-N12 is using the Wireless N standard at 2.4 Ghz. It's not dual band, but that's ok for me. I live in the stix and there isn't too many competing signals.The antenna's come disconnected out of the box, but are really easy to screw in. Not much else to it. It doesn't have a USB Slot for network sharing, but that's ok since it was pretty cheap.FunctionalityOut of the box, it was super simple to set up. I switched it to repeater mode, plugged it in and went to the router maintenance screen. I then connected it to my wireless network and I was up and running. Odd thing happened though. Wirelessly, the router worked fine with most of my devices. I tested it on a Motorola Atrix, iPhone 4, iPad, and my Vista box. My wife's Window's 7 Laptop wouldn't connect to the internet. I was able to get a successful IP from the router, but no internet. After a firmware upgrade to the latest stable release, that solved all of the problems I was having.ConclusionIf you are looking for a cheap repeater for a media center, office, or whatever you would need it for, this is a good investment. It's easy to setup and get going. Just make sure you upgrade the firmware to the latest firmware if you are using Windows 7 to avoid any issues with the wireless connection.BTW, I would have flashed to DD-WRT if the latest firmware didn't work. I just didn't have the time or the need to tinker with it since the upgraded ASUS firmware did what I needed it to do.

I chose this for its USB torrent capability. After trying out all versions of Asus firmware, latest DD-WRT, and Tomato USB, I eventually settled for Shibby's Tomato build. It was a very pains-taking process to have to figure out how to work in so many firmware, and several times I encountered firmware installation failure that made me almost gave up on the router. But with perseverance and the wealth of related info to be found on the web, I eventually got it running stable using Shibby's Tomato USB firmware. I also added a cooler on the chip as it ran rather warm.So this is a very good buy for those looking to mod the firmware and for the USB ports. But not for the faint of heart with regards to modding to 3rd party firmware.

I had never tried an ASUS networking product before, but the overall beastly specs for the price of the RT-N16 were too hard to resist for an IT geek like me. My dad and I each ordered one for our homes and flashed them with DD-WRT.Mine had problems out of the box. Once I got mine set up, I immediately noticed a stronger signal in our home. However, over the course of a few hours, our laptops would gradually drop from 6 bars (full signal) to 5, then 5 to 4, then 4 to 3, and all the way down until the connection finally dropped completely. Resetting the router would fix it temporarily, but it would just happen again a few hours later. I tried increasing and decreasing the transmit power, downgrading from DD-WRT Mega to Standard, flashing the stock Asus firmware, and it continued to do the same thing. I even opened InSSIDer once and just watched the signal strength decline slowly but steadily.My dad's RT-N16 didn't have the same problems, but his were no less annoying. My parents have a Roku and frequently watch stuff on Hulu/Netflix, and the Roku always showed a full wifi signal coming from the router. But as soon as they started streaming a movie or TV show, BOOM - all wireless devices connected to the RT-N16, including the Roku, would be dropped completely. Dad would go reset the router and restart the stream, and then it would work fine for a few hours. They could even do web browsing from their laptop for days after that, but if they tried to stream again, the Asus wifi would crash again.Dad kept his RT-N16 and now simply does a preemptive reboot of his router before they sit down to watch anything; I returned mine for a refund. I thought about just exchanging it and giving it another try, but in my quest to find a reliable wireless-N router this was the fourth in a row that I was having trouble with. Given our personal experiences with the RT-N16 I didn't want to risk more headaches and connection issues, so I moved on.I ended up punting on the "home user" stuff entirely and going with a small business router + small business access point. It cost (quite a bit) more, but the outstanding reliability I now enjoy has been 100% worth it.

I purchased this router with the sole intent of getting a stable hardware platform, while knowing I'd likely flash the firmware to tomato or dd-wrt. It seemed well-reviewed for hardware, and criticized for its oem firmware. Frankly, I ordered the D-link DIR-655, but later learned that its usb ports were not freely shared as the product description suggested, and wouldn't play at all with macs, so I sent it back. In addition, there seemed to be lots of reports of the DIR-655 dying after 5 months.The negative reviews on the RT-16 seem to be related to stock firmware, heat output, and occasional short lifespan. Everything out there seems to have bad reviews on lifespans... I *hate* having to reboot routers, and a reliable platform was critical for me. And tomato on the trusted WRT54 (R.I.P.) was SOLID.The RT-16 is slightly larger than many offerings but is a nice rectangular brick... easy to stack. It also has keyholes in the bottom for wall mounting. Nice. Var better than velcro-tying it to the wall in the closet like my previous router.Out the the box, it is nicely assembled, and I went straight for the tomato flash. No glitches. Went through the configuration and hooked it up.It does get a little warm. No it's not hot, but it's a good bit of warmth for chips that don't have heatsinks on them. I dialed the power output back from the stock 17 to 10, which may have reduced it by a small margin, but not much. I've ordered heatsinks... and the case has enough room to add them without cutting holes.Works nicely. Even at 10db output it covers our home well. The only hitch I ran in to was with security settings. We have an older laptop that does WEP but not WPA. The combination of WEP, the RT-16, and tomato v 54 was a NO GO. Pings approached 3 seconds or just dropped altogether. Essentially zero connectivity to anything. Changed to WPA2 (will have to do something else about the older laptop) and it's been good since then.I haven't set up the USB ports yet, but I read that the throughput is pretty slow. Fine for a printer, not so great for a network disk, but usable with normal sharing standards.... cifs, ftp, etc..AFA number of stars... I can't vote per usb performance or even how good or poor the oem firmware is. So this is strictly on hardware. I'd give it 5, but will dock it one due to the extra care they could have provided in cooling. My guess is, in it's original form, heat will kill it outside of 2 years. But that's just a guess. That's still a good lifespan in this market (unfortunately). Another $3 worth of heatsinks and it'd probably last 3-4....

This buy can be gnarlyWe got it in fall of 2011 it started going bad (losing connection with internet) after about 7 or 8 months.After fighting with ASUS for a month they finally gave me a RMA # to return it and 2,5 week later i got another refurbished one back... Same damn problem couple days into it it started to lose connection with the internet.Again got a stupid RMA number and send it in... 2,5 weeks later got the same router back same damn problem... only it got worse (no internet at all)Talked to a worthless rep on the phone and he said that they would send me a NEW one...So today 1-31-2013 on the interweb you can check your RMA status and it says, "Product repair is in progress". So I called the call center again and this guy told me that, oh no sorry sir but we can't request a new one! It has to be checked out and then they can decide if to sent a refurbitched one or a new one or prehaps the repaired old one.They just blatantly LIE to you there... tell you what ever you want to hear, blowing smoke up your a ssI am tired of ASUS and there worthless repair shopThere were a couple more things that happened but I am sick of it for now

Copied from my review at Newegg:Pros: Nice form factor. Very sleek. Great performance if you know how to use dd-wrt. I was able flash dd-wrt.v24-19519_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N12B1 to the B1 just fine. After setting up the main wireless security and an open test BSSID, I noticed that upload speeds were fine, but download speeds were abysmal. I turn on "afterburner" to "Auto" (Wireless->Advanced Settings) and BINGO!--I was now seeing 20Mbps-40Mbps down. Those wireless speeds are just short of what I see using Cat 5e with my Comcast service. Oh--and this router is nearly "unbrickable"--any time I flashed a bad firmware (TomatoUSB--see below) and it seemed that I had corrupted the router, I just had to put the router into "emergency mode." Once in emergency mode, I could easily put Asus firmware back onto the router using either the firmware restoration tool, or by going to 192.168.1.1 and using the router's built-in interface. This is a very robust little router--and for very little financial investment, too! Also, most people believe this router has only 4MB of flash. I've confirmed that it has 8MB of flash!Cons: I have not been able to successfully flash TomatoUSB onto this router. Every attempt has forced me to restore Asus firmware via Asus Firmware Restoration utility, which I then replace with dd-wrt. Something about this router makes Tomato a significant challenge. No USB? The cpu supports it!Final thoughts: Okay, so I cannot get TomoatoUSB onto it. DD-WRT v24-19519 is an amazing build and it turns this <$50 router into a $200-400 router. Gibson firewall test shows this router successfully stealths all ports. It's fast, it's secure, it's slick, it's also very resilient. Thanks, Asus!

My review of the Asus RT-N16 starts off with good points: 4 GB wired ports, attractive and fairly easy web based configuration. Good wireless signal--nothing to complain about there. Also, attractive looking unit. All works well except for the following: on-line gaming, specifically video games hosted by Rockstar.What I discovered is that this router is probably setup with a very high NAT security with no easy way to set it to what most routers would call the OPEN NAT option. The default NAT (or some other option) prevents certain players to be able to join in the same game depending on how THEY have setup their ROUTERS. A call to Asus tech support and my own research was a complete waste of time on how to set the router to NAT OPEN or its equivalent setting. Note: there a few built-in settings for several games but not the one I usually play.To overcome this issue I made a direct wired connection from my cable modem to my Playstation 3. This enabled me to verify that the default RT-N16's configuration blocks me from gaming with certain of my on-line buddies.Luckily, I kept my older router. The on-line gaming issue was solved very easily this way instead of the hard way mandated by spending hours to nail down a solution with the RT-N16.If anybody knows how to make the RT-N16 work better with the PS3 and on-line gaming, I would appreciate your input.

So I bought this Router, and got it just before Christmas. I had a lot of family coming over and they were all bringing laptops, ipads, kindle fires, web supported cell phones, the point is, I needed my wireless signals to get in gear. I had a fairly new Linksys that was as reliable as a Linksys router can be, I mean compared to the other ones on the market Linksys is the best. So I read some reviews and I took a risk on this ASUS router. Since a lot of wireless devices were coming over, I decided to set this router up as a repeater, so more devices could be connected at once. Apparently this router is so good, that you don't even need the CD to set it up, so I decided to check that out. I set the router to repeater mode, hooked it up to my laptop, and it connected and was broadcasting a signal in a few clicks, it worked flawlessly throughout the holidays, No CD required. After the family left I just left the ASUS in repeater mode for the boosted signal strength so I could have a better connection downstairs. But that damn Linksys was still giving me problems, I still had to reset that thing a few times a week. I got sick of it, and pulled the Linksys off, and put the ASUS in its place. Setting up the ASUS as a router required the CD, it almost worked without, so some people might be able to do it. It was easier than setting up my Linksys router, but just a little bit easier not super easy. But, not only do I have great signal strength downstairs compared to the Linksys, but its been running for 20days straight with no problems, and setting up the passwords were super easy, and I feel the security features are much better with the ASUS, and if your a bit techy there are lot of additional options, if you are not, you can just ignore them, and it will work great. So not only is this router a 3rd of the cost of my Linksys router, it works better, it was easier to set up, and it has a better signal strength.So in case your not sure, all I'm saying is if you are looking for a new Router, buy this one, NOW, what are you waiting for.update 09/08/12I had this router for 8 months now I had to restart for this first time a few days ago not because my router was giving me problems, my modem failed me and I had to restart it. I am so happy with this router I am buying another one thank you ASUS for the great product.

almost everything about this router is "ok". It slows down communication noticeably but, I am still able to play online games with only 1 meg internet.the part that I hate about this router is its inability to port forward.the process to do so is first confusing and very difficult to figure out on your own. In case someone else tries to later you have to;1. manually assign an ip2. add ports to your "virtual server" listthe problem you will run into though is it only lets you open the port for one device for example,star trek online wants ports 7000-7500 open for game communicationi can open these ports but only for one device.so, if i have them open on my desktop a friend cannot play with me on their laptop because their ports 7000-7500 cannot be added to exception list because "this entry has been in list".I went to customer service for help and it was anything but. they wanted to know every meaningless fact about irrelevant things and i spend 20 minutes telling them my phone number etc when i just needed a 2 minutes of knowledgeable human contact. They were defiantly not american and couldn't understand anything i said i had to spell out my computer make and my name by going d and in dog etc. After this long run around they said they wanted $50 to forward a few ports for a second device! so much for customer service...Asus may not be an incompetent company but this router experience has defiantly turned me off from their products.

I will have to say Im a long time Asus customer, love their product until now. Im an IT person working at an IT company and have been using the RT-N13U Rev. B1 for some time. This model has more range and reliability than the numerous mid-end routers my company has tested for a great price. Recently however, I ordered 3 and 2 out of the three experienced the same issue. Two days after installing at 2 different locations I get calls about network issues. Upon arriving I notice the power light is not working. All of the rest of the lights are working correctly but network strength is very poor. I guess I may have just gotten a bad batch but can no longer recommend these routers to customers or use for network installs. Very Disappointed!!!!PS. Amazon's return process is not very delightful for the customer. It does not give very much information on the time it will take to process and receive a new product or credit which translates into me having to take care of customers otherwise. I tried through the Asus website which says it has no data on the warranty. I just wish it was easier when I receive a product that is pretty much D.O.A!!!

I bought this router because I had weak coverage in my 156m2 apartment. We are in Brazil, and here the walls are brick and there are also lots of concrete.My old Cisco WRT 160N V2 was enough to cover the TV room (where it was installed) and my bedroom (with a weak sign) these two rooms are approximately 15 m from each other and have two brick wall separating them with a bathroom in between.I installed the ASUS RT- N16 using the clone WAN method explained in the brochure and it worked right away, but the signal was worst!I tested using the COPEL site (Brazilian) and I got 4.8 MBps with the ASUS versus 10.6 with the old Cisco... I am puzzled; apparently router quality has decayed over the years!I will try now using the ASUS as a repeater to my Cisco signal, if does not perform well I will return it.

I've just started using this router. The firmware that came with it wasn't as featured as DD-WRT and kept disconnecting all clients often during they day. I'm familiar with DD-WRT and it is easier to sift through to set up than the firmware that came with this router. It's notorious that Asus firmware/software/drivers are not so good. But that's okay, they make decent hardware otherwise.Before I had this router, I had a Linksys WRT150N, and 80ft away I could only get a 12-20% signal, now I get 35-40% signal. The WRT-150N was decent in it's time, but now I'm going to use Asus for now on.I don't actually like that it is white, but it's a D'good router and I'm happy to have spent the money I spent on it. Before with the dying old router, my internet connection was pitiful over wireless and it would disconnect often, with this Asus, I've found stability in LAN and WAN.BUY THIS ROUTER, IT IS THE BEST!

First of let clarify that I am using and have used this device only in the repeater mode so I cannot review the other modes.I recently find myself in need of wireless repeater/bridge to use in two different spots in my house to connect my computers and device to my network without having to rewire the whole house! I work in IT and I ran a business at home so I have couple of servers and bunch of desktops and this is why I needed two repeaters.I am a big fan of ASUS and I've been using their motherboards and graphic cards for years now in my own servers and desktops as well as most of the custom built PCs and servers that I have done for others. So, I was not worried about brand reputation and support issues but I was a little bit hesitant because I never used ASUS networking equipment before. But overall the price (almost half the price of other comparable devices from other brands, features and specs where excellent. Also, I knew that I can always return it to Amazon so, I ordered two.I opened the first one and setup was a breeze, it was up and running under 15 minutes. The repeater functions flawlessly and connects to my D-Link Extreme N Gigabit Wireless Router DIR-655D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Gigabit Wireless Router easily. I especially liked the fact that setup was much easier compared to some of the 3rd party firmware that I used on other wireless routers to convert them to repeaters.I would give it a five star if it wasn't for one issue: you cannot use two of these in a repeater mode on the same network. I figured that out when I opened the second one and started to configure that and I noticed that it will not connect to my wireless network. After 30 minutes of playing and restarting the second one, finally it connected to my wireless network but I noticed the first one was disconnected. After couple of hours of trying different configurations I could not get both of them to work at the same time connected to the same wireless network. It seems that in the repeater mode you cannot change the device name (I don't mean the SSID, the actual device name). So, essentially I ended up with repeaters with identical names on my wireless network. I suspect that was the root of the problem. So, I kept one and returned the other one to Amazon. Currently, I'm using an older Linksys wireless router with dd-wrt 3rd party firmware on it as a second repeater.I also, want to clarify that I didn't do any further research and didn't contact ASUS for support simply because at the time I didn't have more time to spend on this problem. So, there might be a solution to this issue.

There are too many reviews on this already, so I will just point out a few things I like about this router.Mac Cloning - My ISP lock my internet to the MAC address of the router they provided, this router can easily clone MAC address.DLNA / FTP / Printer / Cloud server - This is so cool. There are two USB ports in the back. You simply connect your USB flashdrive or harddrive to it, log into the router and enable your choice of networking service for it. So far I only tested the DLNA feature, but it work without any problems, Windows Media Player and XBMC was able to detect the videos in my flashdrive and play it smoothly.Decent signal - It's not amazing, but I'm able to get good signal throughout the 1200sqft house and even a little outdoor.DDWRT - It work with DDWRT firmware, all you have to do is download the correct firmware and flash it. However, I prefer the original firmware with the easy interface.

I've had this thing for over two years and it is a constant source of frustration. If you want your connection to randomly drop down to 1mbps, this is the router for you. You will have random connection problems seemingly out of the blue after weeks of steady performance. It will drop your connection in the middle of a game, streaming videos, and transferring files.I've done just about everything to troubleshoot the issues with this router. DDWRT. New antennas. New wireless adapters on the clients. Heatsinks on the chipset. Adjusting power. Setting fixed channels. Setting fixed bandwidths. Twenty Hz. Forty Hz. This and that. On and off. I've concluded that this router is just a piece of junk.Don't let ASUS's good reputation fool you. I like all their other products, but they really dropped the ball on this one.

I purchased this product because I have ASUS laptop. Brand new router did not work. I returned it to ASUS (had to pay shipping) and received the refurbished router with only 90 day warranty (although my new router had 12 month warranty). This one works, however, every few days, it loses the connection. I was unable to get my printer to print wirelessly, even customer service was unable to figure it out. ASUS customer service is terrible. You have to wait on hold for an hour just to be transfererd to voice mail and they never call you back. If you are lucky to get thru the customer service, they are very slow and lazy and never resolve your issue. Since I have ASUS laptop, when I call the router customer service line, they always transfer me to ASUS laptop line claiming that is a computer issue, then the ASUS computer customer service tells me it is not their issue, but router customer service issue, etc. I never had my issues resolved thru customer service line. Do to buy this item, you will only have trouble with it.

I of course immediately installed DDWRT on this box after I got it, ran into some issues, realized I needed to run the latest release from the wiki entry instead of the stable release listed on the site. Since then, it's been running quite stable, with great performance, however, it does tend to run a bit hot, and after a storm, for whatever reason my WAN and Port3 ports both stopped working (no link lights or anything, even after reflashing to both stock firmware and latest DDWRT). ASUS wouldn't allow me to do an advanced RMA so I ended up modifying DDWRT to use a different port for WAN, and have limped along since. Waiting for it to die before I buy another, will probably end up waiting for 802.11ac to become widespread first, unless I decide to just move to power-jack based adapters first.

I bought this to supplant a Linksys WRT-54G with DD-WRT that was being a bit cranky. I specifically was looking for a DD-WRT router as the Linksys was set up with it and it is definitely the way to go for router control.It took me about an hour to install DD-WRT and cut over all the settings from my Linksys. I duplicated everything so I would not have to reconfigure any of my other devices once using the Asus.My son asked me later what I had done to the router as his throughput had increased by a factor of 3. We are limited obviously by what the devices will support in our hardware, but his tests indicated a significant increase speed. I attribute that to much more computational speed and more memory on the Asus than the Lynksys.Highly recommended.

Ok, note that everyone thinks they are a computer or network expert. Note that everyone says "I work on computers all day" Note that this is a wireless N router for less than $30 bucks.Flash back to 2001 or so - Linksys 54b (old slow B) is the top dog, costs over $100 dollars, limited power, limited software, slow wireless, etc.Now for less than $30 you get Fast Wireless N, adjustable Power output, multiple wireless mode selection (bg, gn, n), router-repeater-access point selection, custom access rules, built in guest and multiple user profiles, auto-firm update, power conservation, all with the built in software - flash DD-WRT and this little thing is jam up if you need that much customization.Do you need to be techie to use it, maybe, but if your not you can't do much more with the Cisco easy setups or any of the others brand easy setup programs.Bottom line - this is a lot of wireless router, repeater, access point for the money.Good job ASUS

This has been a very frustrating experience. After reading so many stellar reviews about this product I decided to buy one (our current router is old and not working very well).However I had maybe two days of enjoying this product before it lost connectivity (both desktop and wireless). It was fixed after unplugging it and plugging it back in, but the problem repeats itself every 1-2 days, sometimes a couple of times a day. I tried updating the firmware (both regular and beta) but nothing seemed to work. There is no pattern. Sometimes it goes out in the middle of the day, other times when I wake up I'll see that it's down again.I'm going to return it and I absolutely would not recommend this router to anyone. It's a shame because when it works, it works great. But the problems with it have been far too frustrating.

I purchased this router based on good reviews. I got the router and first thing I did was upgrade the firmware to 2.1.1.1.78.Update was successful and then I proceeded to configure the router. It worked well for few hours and then I noticed I lost connection. I waited few minutes but the signal didn't come back; I had to restart it. Over the last few weeks it has been the same everytime I used it; the router works for few hours and then drops the signal. Today it has gotten worse; I restarted the router, I see the signal, but I get no IP assigned to my laptop (tablet and phone also impacted). The connection diagnostic of the laptop says DHCP is not working, which makes sense-I manually set the IP and I am able to browse. Something is wrong with this unit! Time to return it.UPDATE: 1/16/2013I received a replacement from Amazon last week and after having performed the firmware update I can report that this unit is working. I have not noticed any connection drops.

This router is overkill for a VPN connection and what many find when they order this is, it doesn't have DD-WRT installed on it and the DD-WRT setup instructions are too difficult to follow.You can instead buy a $50 TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router , Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port , 3 Detachable Antenna x3/ IP QoS/ QSS Button and set up a persistant VPN connection to allow you to access online content from any location, on ANY device. Search the Amazon Kindle Store for "Completely Simple-Unblock the Internet". This easy to follow step by step guide will help you stream the content you want in just 30 minutes.

This router replaced my WRT54G that had been running non-stop since 2005.I installed DD-WRT on the ASUS router following instructions posted in another review. Flashing the firmware was a pretty straightforward process and installed without a hitch. It's almost unbelievable how powerful a $28 router is when running the right firmware. I particularly like the ease of assigning static IPs and the bandwidth monitoring tools.I can't comment on the stock firmware but it did look pretty intuitive. The router itself does feel a little on cheap side but it is fairly aesthetic -- Time will tell how well it holds up.

So the GUI provided by ASUS on this thing for setup is terrible. I work on computers all day and this was bad enough that it confused me as to what it was doing. It tires to do a lot and has a lot of nice features but the whole thing is too much. I also started having some weird connectivity losses after installing this as my router. I am not ready to blame this strictly on the router since I am not 100% sure this caused the issue.That said if you are tech savy this router can easily be flashed to the DD-WRT firmware and after that setup and everything else is a breeze while still offering the same or better features as the OEM firmware. Once I flashed it everything has been great, one issues with drops (again that could have been my ISP anyway) and performance has been great. If you have flashed a router before or have the technical chops to do so I would recommend this because of the low cost.

This works amazingly at my house. I upgraded to 3 9db antennas and have coverage over my entire house, and on the other side of my pond which is about 1/4 of a mile from my house. I can't complain to much with that. DD-WRT working running on this router allowed me to boost my transmit power to 251mw that coupled with my high gain antennas works very well. I can even get wireless inside my 4,000 square foot shop as long as I keep the bay doors open.If anyone is thinking of adding this router to their house they won't be sorry. I thought about going with a newer router but to be honest my computers don't require that much of a gain internally.

I purchased one of these so that I could hook up my 3tb hd and access it from work and phone. Once it was set up it worked great. AIcould was flawless and the product has been running for 3 months without so much as a hickup. It can handle all my streaming needs and connects everything. The only reason it did not get 5 stars was the initial set up. The back end is a little hard to navigate and it would not work at all with the external drive until I did a firmware update. (really my fault, I should have done that before I did anything else. I know better was just excited to get it.) The nice clean design lets it fit nicely in just about any room and once up and can forget about it.

I needed to replace my Netgear WGT624v3 because I am one of many iPhone 4s users who upgraded to ios6 and now cannot access our home wifi router. After much research, I decided to give this router a chance. I had this router working in a minute.As many have noted in previous reviews, the software on the router needs to be updated. Unfortunately, I did this after adding all 20 device addresses in my household and it was deleted after the upgrade. Kind of a pain, but not a big deal. But thought I would mention it for anyone considering to buy this and adding MAC addresses.The one feature I had on Netgear that this doesn't have is adding a name to the MAC address, i.e. iphone or kindle, so it is easier to track what devices are connected and to know which ones to delete if no longer in use.I was able to easily add static ip addresses for certain devices with no problem.This router does not support the print sharing with my two printers, so I can't comment on that feature. I plan to use the usb file sharing feature, but haven't gotten to that yet.

I've been using the ASUS Wireless-N for a year, now. I wanted to extend my current wireless signal to the back rooms of the house, and it has worked flawlessly for me. I'm a bit surprised that three are so many posts about problems. Perhaps it's because I just set it up and didn't obsess about settings and speeds. It just worked. That seems to be happening to me as I get older...I just want stuff to work, and not have to spend hours tweaking.It is a second AP in my house, and I've never seen it go down or lose IP or anything. I assigned a static IP to it, and the router automatically named itself with a part of the name from my main AP. I would've preferred to be able to name it myself, but didn't see an option for that.In the year, I cannot say that I've had one problem with it. It does a pretty good job going through several plaster walls to the back rooms of the house. I also have a Wii, DirecTV and Networked Blu-Ray player hardwired to the ASUS, and have never had a problem.

I'm replacing a Netgear that I never had issues with. I wanted to add shared storage across devices in my home, so I opted for this. It took FOREVER to get the initial GUI up after realizing my firewalls were blocking it ... not sure why since the I never had issues with the Netgear. Anyhoo ... I got it working, but kept losing internet connection. Checked and rechecked firewalls, still didnt work. Finally rebooted the router ... yea, internet. I updated the firmware with ASUS latest and 'greatest'. Connected a seagate 2T drive ... set it up ... we're all connected. 5 mins later, no internet, no shared drive. If I close my macbook and come back to it an hour later, no internet. I have to restart my computer or reset the firewalls or reboot the router. It's VERY ANNOYING. Still debating if its all worth it and if I should revert back to my old reliable Netgear router sans shared drives.Does anyone know how to work around the firewalls and internet drops? I added the IP addresses and everything on my local network of computers on my safe list, but the router still has issues. I reroute the ethernet back to the Netgear and no issues, so I don't know what the problem is. I've never had so many issues with a router.

This router is not a good choice for the average home user, difficult to setup, and mine would regularly drop the internet (WAN) connection. However I purchased this router with the intention of re-flashing with the latest open source DD-WRT firmware, after I did that the router worked fine. Again do not buy this device if you have no experience with routers, I have set up dozens of home/small office routers and this was terrible in it's "out of the box" form. The firmware loaded from the factory might be based on the DD-WRT open source project, but it bears no resemblance to the firmware you can download.

I had a D-Link gamer extreme wireless G router. I loved it! Very granular to the MAC address filtering and lots of other nice features. I bought a Gamer extreme wireless N to replace it and found out a lot of the features from the older router were not included in the new one. I didn't bother to install it and waited for something better to come along.The RT-16 is a kick ass router! It has the features that I'm looking for: Wireless and wired MAC address filtering (not mixed)TWO USB ports!Flash upgradeable to DD-WRT!128mb of memory to play with!The ability to turn up and down the power output on the radio sets. (max is 200mW, but not suggested)Bandwidth monitoring and traffic shaping.The price is right and it's better than what linksys (cisco) and D-Link are putting out now. I'll bet you that Asus won't run out on their little customers like Cisco in partiular and D-link not so much.

My N12B1 (hardware version B1, firmware 2.1.1.1.38, MAC 10:BF:48:BD:AB:xx) arrived on 8/30. I went to dd-wrt's Router Database and flashed it with dd-wrt.v24-16785_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N12B1.trx and the router entered into an endless power cycling.I managed to flashed it back to ASUS stock firmware with 'Firmware Restore' utility camewith the router. (It is also available from ASUS web site.)The thread below discussed the exact problem I ran into earlier.Please google "RT-N12.B1 Boot looping" or find it in the 1st comment.It also has provided the firmware download URL, which is not available from the front page of dd-wrt.(amazon has removed URL from my post. Please get it from the first comment of this review.)I flashed it to dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N12B1.trx from router's admin page and dd-wrt is now up and running.------------------------Updated on 9/5:Downgraded it from 5 stars to 2 stars.I have tried 3 firmwares: dd-wrt 18946, 17790, and 2.1.1.1.67 from ASUS. My router has one big problem: "N-Only" modedoesn't work! My iPad and another PC is only 3 feet away from this router. They cannot even play 1 short movie fromYouTube without pauses."G-Only" mode is very stable and smooth. Just like my 6-year-old WRT54G (with dd-wrt).This router goes back to amazon tomorrow.

As other users have reported, this router does not work correctly in Wireless N mode. It works if I force it to slow down and use Wireless-G mode, but if I leave it in Auto or N-Only mode, download speeds are reduced to about 0.5 Mbps, which is much slower than the 19 Mbps that it should be. A single defective unit is fine, but this is clearly a widespread problem judging from other users' comments.In addition, I am just past my 30 day return period, so I am forced to work with Asus's warranty procedure. I am expected to mail in the unit AT MY OWN EXPENSE and wait for them to send a replacement. All the while, I am without a WiFi router (they don't offer to ship the replacement first and then let me send mine in).ALso, their tech support has been poor. The people I have dealt with have no idea this problem exists, so they're wasting my time having me restore default settings, upgrade firmware, etc. Then when I request an RMA, I don't hear back for 3 days so I'm forced to call in to get it, where I get disconnected twice. All this for a $35 router. TIME IS MONEY, DON'T WASTE YOURS ON THIS PIECE OF CRAP.

There was only one spot in my apartment where I got good wireless internet signal (wireless router central to building shared by all apartments), so I bought this router and set it up in that spot as a repeater. It works well, and I get great signal everywhere in my apartment.However, if the internet goes out, or the signal doesn't reach the repeater for some reason, there is no indication. It just appears as if the internet won't load. This router needs to either stop broadcasting if it not connected to the source, or it needs to have some sort of indication that it is not connected to the source.

I was setting up a computer on the third floor of my house and found the signal to be weak from my existing wireless router. I searched for a router that that could be set up as a repeater. In reviewing the "ASUS RT-N12 Wireless-N 300", I found that many of the reviews were good but I was concerned in that I had never heard of ASUS as a company and with some of the 1-star reviews that were given. It was not until I had seen a 1-star review that was responded to by the manufacturer that I thought the company would be worth the risk.The setup was straightforward. There is a switch on the back to set it up as a router, access point or repeater. I set the switch to repeater and connected it directly to my computer. After starting internet explorer, it did not automatically bring up the quick internet setup (QIS) as described. The manual indicates that "If the QIS web page does not appear after you launched your web browser, disable the proxy settings on your web browser". I did not do this, but I accessed the repeater by typing the address " 192.168.1.1". This brought me to the admin login screen. Once I logged in, I was able to put in the required information for my network, rebooted the repeater and it was up and running.It should be noted that once the repeater has gained access to your network via SSID and password, you will not be able to access the ASUS repeater directly since any access will take you to the primarily router on your system (if your primary router's address is 192.168.1.1).Overall, I give the product 4 out of 5 stars. I really appreciate the ASUS feature where there is an actual switch on the back (rather than a software setting) that allows you to select the operational mode (router, access point or repeater). I was pleased with the price of $39.99 and very happy with the quick installation (completed within an hour's time). Although I cannot comment on the ASUS as a router or access point, I am quite happy with the device being used as a repeater. The signal strength is perfect now and has been operational for a little over 2 weeks with no issues. My negatives are that the documentation is a little on the light side and there should be a way of accessing the system even though it is in "repeater" mode.
