I'm using this as a repeater in my 5500 sq foot home and placed it in the second story where the kids hang out. Xbox and three computers demand high speed internet up there and this increased the DSL signal to them as if it were next to the router in the basement. Works so good, that I placed an order for one more for the main level of the house. I tried the one I have there and it provided my iphone an increase in wifi strengh from one bar to the max three bars in the bedroom and bath. For a repeater use it simple. Dont even try reading the direction...just place the switch to "repeater" mode on the back of the unit and plug it into an electric socket. It will discover the existing router (I use a D-Link dir 655 which are the best) and connect to it. This is verifiable by the blue lights on the front of the ASUS unit. For the price it's a steal and the only thing I've found out there that really works. That's why I took the time to write it up for you. Buy it. You can always send it back with Amazon's awesome return system. Good luck!

This is a great standard router for the price. I got it for in-laws who do internet surfing and streaming of Netflix via a Roku box and internet apps on the TV. It does the job nicely and works well. Can run more than 1 network - 1 for guests, and add a few others for other people - nice! Setup was a breeze, with one exception which was more of an annoyance. I couldn't figure out if it's possible to remove or disable the default 'ASUS' named network. You can rename it, but you can't just disable it, and use one you've created. It doesn't offer any USB ports for network file sharing, but for a basic 'N' router it works well.

I've bought four of these in the past two weeks, all from Amazon. I'm using two of these as AP's wired back to the DSL-Router to extend the wireless range in a customers RV park and they work great. I now have two more ordered, one for myself and one for a neighbor that wants one. The thing that impressed me the most about the RT-N12 is the user-friendly built-in setup menu. It's so easy to configure a child could set it up. You would have to just not even look at the screen to make a mistake. I never had to use the software disc that came with it. There's a 3 position switch on the back for Router / AP / Repeater modes. There is one WAN port and four 10/100 LAN ports on the back. The default IP address is 192.168.1.1 and the default login is admin for both user and password. The look, finish and overall appearance, like the built in setup menu, is high quality with good attention to detail. ASUS has a long reputation of building high quality motherboards and I've owned a couple of them and they were great. The RT-N12 looks like another well made product from ASUS.

I bought this strictly to use as an access point (or repeater if necessary). I wasn't 100% sure which would be more effective and I liked the flexibility of the unit. I had an ethernet jack where I wanted a signal booster figuring that would give me max signal strength. If not for that I would have set it up as a repeaterThe problem was with the ASUS setup. There are three (3) different configurations for this - Router/Repeater/AP. I was setting this up to be used as an Access Point (AP). I couldn't get the setup installation software to recognize my pc (directly connected to the ASUS, via ethernet) at first during the setup process. The printed instructions in the box tell you to set it up(for AP mode)as follows: cable/dsl modem > existing router > ASUS > pc/laptop, then turn everything on and run the setup CD....doesn't work that way. At least it didn't for me and I tried numerous times. However, when the setup CD booted up, it said to connect directly to the modem then to the pc, taking my current/old router out of the connection string (a conflict of the printed directions). Also, I had flipped the switch on the back of the ASUS router to "AP", since that's how I planned on using it. In their defense, it didn't say anything about touching the switch...I made the assumption that it needed to be in whatever mode I planned on using it when setting it up. Nowhere did it say to leave it on "Router" during setup then flip to Repeater or AP after installation. Had to reboot (plug/unplug) the ASUS several times as I tried to get it to work.Once I got everything setup, I moved the ASUS to the central (wired) location and it worked perfectly.Net-net is, set it up as a Router then configure (flip the switch) for AP or Repeater mode afterwards. ASUS could do a much better job with their documentation content as well as the size of the print. You need a Hubble telescope to read the details. I would give this product a "5" except for the confusion and conflict in the setup instructionsHappy with it now that it is up and running. It is only day one, but the signal is strong and doesn't interfere with my previous settings for file sharing, etc.

It is good unit, particularly, with recent $20 rebate. I spent less than half hour to set up either AP or Repeater mode, and it worked well. With the repeater mode, I was able to watch a whole HD movie streamed from DishNetwork/Blockbuster site without any buffering. I used Amped repeater before, and got buffering from the same streaming site. However, I could not make printer server mode working with my Samsung ML-2510. It got configured alright, but printed out with machine codes. Since I am using it as a repeater, and printer server is not used at the moment for me. I have not tried other advanced features, computer-free download, and as a Wireless N router.Maybe some other users have better lucks with their printers hooked up to this unit. If you are not interested in printer server, computer-free download, etc., then it is better off with ASUS RT-N12 combo router/repeater/ap (for $39.99 on amazon no rebate).

If you plan on using custom firmware (DD-WRT or Tomato), this is the router for you. Pay no attention to the other comments here complaining about Asus' firmware. If you want to use manufacturer firmware, buy a Linksys or Netgear.I'm currently running DD-WRT on it (dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin) with no problems. The GUI is by far faster than any router I've ever used. DD-WRT unlocks the full potential of this sub-$100 router.Search "dd-wrt wiki asus rt-n16" in any search engine for very detailed instructions on flashing DD-WRT firmware to this router, and follow them to the letter. At first glance, the instructions appear to be long and complicated. They are actually very easy and took me about 10 minutes total.

After reading the reviews here and on other sites and common consensus that the hardware is good but firmware is average at best, I bought this with the intent to use an open-source firmware. I ran this with the included firmware only long enough to ascertain that it physically worked properly. Within minutes after I started installing and configuring DD-WRT which runs wonderfully on this router; TomatoUSB firmware is another option, depending on needs/preferences. My signal strength is much better compared to my Linksys WRT-54, I'm still trying to determine the best power setting, hoping to get a reliable connection to my workshop. I'm not presently seeing any difference in wifi speeds due to all my devices being 802.11G rather than 802.11N spec'ed. I'm glad to see gigabit Ethernet finally showing up in more home routers.

Pros:-DD-WRT Support-802.11N-Good factory firmware-Can be used as bridge, AP, or repeater-Compact designSince I've delegated my old WRT54GS to my new office, I needed another router for home use after moving to an area that wasn't services by U-Verse. Now that I'm serviced by TW Cable, the hardware provided to me is a modem only and no longer a modem/router in one. After much consideration and talking to my sister in Taiwan, and using many Asus products already (MB, video card, lap top, etc) I decided to get the RT-N12. I really haven't had much issues with the factory firmware, if any at all. Just recently loaded DD-WRT on it and now its even better!Cons:-Super bright blue LED status indicators (if you can even call it a con, I call it a night light)

I had spent countless dollars and hours trying to find a router that worked consistently and wouldn't need to be professionally setup just to work. After trying just about everything in the local stores including using aftermarket firmware on most of them I was still having no luck. Then someone suggested trying this ASUS router and after seeing the cheap price i figured there was no way it would work out for me but i bought it anyway figuring whats the worst that could happen. Well 6 months later its still working better than anything I have ever used and hasn't required a single reset. Also this router has more features than you could probably ever imagine much less need. Hands down best router ever IMHO and Iam actually posting this comment while ordering 3 more to be given to my family members. Try it You wont regret it.

I bought this product to use as a repeater for extending a weak signal to my bedroom. Setup was simple. I set the switch to repeater, attached it to my laptop, and powered up the unit. I started my web browser which automatically opened the log in page for the device. After entering my network information and saving, the unit was operational. As an added bonus the unit also functions as a bridge in repeater mode so I was able to plug my logitech review into one of the ports. For the price I think this unit is the best deal.

I have a large area to cover and my Linksys top of the line router could not do it. I installed the ASUS as an extender/repeater and it doubled my coverage. I plugged it in about fifty feet from the router and it gave me at least another fifty feet of WIFI coverage. Installation was a breeze. It was a plug and play.

Our small business is a fan of Asus products. This router is an exception. We acknowledge that most reviews here are positive and maybe we got a lemon. However, when we tried to use this unit in its Access Point mode, it failed in an interesting way by crashing any router we connected it to. We could always connect wireless devices, but on the backend (the router side) this unit would somehow flood the routers with something that caused them to lock up and lose WAN connectivity. This was true of different routers we tried throughout our company. Again. ... maybe got a lemon. However, we cannot recommend this unit as a WiFi Access Point.

The short review is: excellent router, extremely easy to set up, great range, good stability, nice white color, absolutely no complaints. Here's the longer review:I took a total risk on this router...there were no reviews on Amazon, I'd never heard of ASUS, and wasn't convinced that ordering it was a good idea. However, the price was right, and I had just spent frustrating hours trying to configure a Netgear route. My previous router, a D-link, had a "known issue" that the manufacturer solved by discontinuing the model's support. So, I thought, let me try this unknown brand and see what happens. If worse comes to worse I'd just return it to Amazon.WOW was I pleased! Literally, 10 minutes after I had opened it, I had it configured as an access point, had logged into the router from my wireless laptop, and had set up a password to encrypt the network. I've set up maybe 5-7 routers in my life and always dread it... this was by far the easiest experience I've ever had. In the picture on the site, this router looks like it's an ugly grey color. It is a shiny smooth white - think Apple ipod aesthetic - with nice white antennas. Very aesthetically pleasing.Though the advertising for this router states "diskless setup" it come with an optional setup disk. I did not use it as I wanted to test the advertising's claim...and am pleased to say it's an example of truth in advertising!I'm also getting very good signal strength, speed and stability...I will DEFINITELY update this review if I run into issues, but overall I'm giving this thing 5 stars (and I almost never give 5 stars because I think everything has room for improvement) because it was so inexpensive and easy to set up, and performs exactly as advertised.I am using this router as an "access point" which means it is connected via ethernet cable to another router and serves to extend the range of my wireless network. There's a switch on the back that allows you to select access point mode, standard router mode, or bridge/repeater mode.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!Update 5/10/2010- still working great... I put some white electricians' tape over the blue LEDs in front as they were too bright, but other than that, no issues at all. I forget it's there - it just works all the time without needing to be unplugged every so often like my other routers.... my wireless devices are always connected to it and don't lose signal. Still a 5-star review.Update 8/13/2011- This unit is still cranking away...doing great. I NEVER have to unplug and plug it back in, it just works... no rebooting. I just bought the N16 model to replace my primary wireless router (using this one as an access point to extend the network) and am very pleased with it as well... the two work well together. STILL happy with this router!

I bought this router to use as a wireless bridge for my Sony Blu Ray player. It's a bonus that it can be reconfigured as a router for when I eventually re-organize my network, or as an emergency back-up in case my existing wireless router fails.Set up couldn't have been easier. There's a three-way switch on the back to select between router, repeater, or access point. I set it to repeater, connected it via ethernet to my PC, then surfed to the admin page at 192.168.1.1. The default login/password is admin/admin. From there I simply selected my wireless network to repeat and entered the WEP password for it. That's all there is to it. I uplugged the router, plugged it into my Blu Ray player, and it just plain worked. No fuss whatsoever. So now it's acting as both a wireless bridge for the player, and as a repeater which increases the signal strength throughout the rest of the house! The instructions that come with the router aren't the greatest, and they're printed in what appears to be a 2 point font. But it was simple enough to set up that I didn't need them so I'll still give it 5 stars, especially considering the price.

I needed at wifi repeater so I could get a signal out to the workshop above my detached garage. Setting the unit up in repeater mode took under 3 minutes. After I set it up I positioned the router where I wanted it and went up to the workshop. Success! My wifi signal went from one bar to three bars immediately. Watched a Netflix movie without any connection hiccups like I had before buying this router.Haven't used any of the modes other than "repeater" but I would say you can't get better than this for the price.

We have Verizon Fios coming into a Verizon Actiontec wireless router (wireless G only) and a Linksys 54G access point on other end of house. The house is somewhat long and has old heavy duty walls (5000sqft). We have kids with laptops, Ipads, Iphones, and Ipod Touches. I had wanted to improve our wireless coverage and speed and ordered this unit based on reviews and flexability of the device (AP, Router, Extender). If it worked well, I thought I could get another and cover the whole hoouse with Wireless-N.I plugged it into a cental portion of the house (Entertainment center) in AP mode. Came up immediately as wireless-N AP (open). Was a snap to configure and security and had some nice additional features such as setting multiple SSID's and having the wireless turn off at certain times (ie. after midnight for the kids).I have not had a Wireless-N device before and to my surprise it covered the WHOLE house. The laptops are all connecting at 130Mpbs, which is 3x more than we were getting. The range is a HUGE improvement over the wireless-G devices. All of this for under $40! I wish I had done this a year ago.

I'll get right to the point. My 95 year old father is a nursing home resident. I set him up with a notebook that he uses for photography, email, Canadian Patience Solitaire, Facebook and most importantly Skype for face to face contact much his large extended family. The nursing homes wifi gave him 2 and 3 bars on his computer. Three bars gave him so-so communication but two bars gave him none. I bought the ASUS (RT-N12)wireless-N 300, plugged it in and started set to set it up. It was up on a shelf across the small room unattached to any thing. There was immediate communication between the notebook and router. With my mouth wide open I quickly noted that the notebook was showing the maximum six bars from the nursing home network. Skype has been working flawlessly since the router set up. The repeater segment of the N-300 certainly has worked in this instance.

Received on time. Immediately changed routers to dd-wrt software which went exactly as it should. Bought four of them and they all have been working as expected. Nothing fantastic, range is about the same as our other wireless N's, but for the price it's a much better deal. I heard that any router under about fifty bucks is suspect, and hackable, but with dd-wrt this is much less likely to be a problem. Have to wonder if inexperienced users are buying low priced models and not setting them up securely by leaving the default settings. Have another order in for more of these, they're doing the job for us.
