I have had this router for just about a month now. I read so many reviews on here that said the DD-WRT firmware was so much better than the stock firmware, so right from the get-go I flashed the DD-WRT on it. The process took about 15 minutes for a first time firmware flasher, not too bad.Since I isntalled the router I havent had to touch it once. It has been 100% stable with my windows 7, Mac OSX and Android/iOS devices. I couldnt ask for a better router for my home.Cant wait to use the USB to put a HDD on it and plug the printer into it too so everyone can print from the printer. If you can figure out how to flash the DD-WRT firmware, odds are you are going to LOVE this router.GONE ARE THE DAYS OF POWER CYCLING MY ROUTER ON A DAILY BASIS! Wahoooo!

I've been using this Asus router for about a month now and it proves to be the best router I have ever used. I've never used setup CD's but, still, configuration was easy enough and it worked immediately. I even changed ISP's without any changes needed. The range of this router is very good, giving me 5 bars in almost every corner of my 1000 square foot apartment. This router seamlessly streams all my media. Netflix and even HD content play with nary a lag. It can handle wireless streaming from from my Media Center PC to my laptop altogether while I'm online. It appears to be Apple friendly too...I also have an Apple TV media device which previously, with other routers, needed to renew its internet connection every day or two. Now my AppleTV has remained constantly connected since I first setup my Asus router. With its rear USB port, this router can also serve as a network print server although I haven't yet used this function since I already have been sharing my printer through "Home Networking". Also, the USB port can be used with "flash" drives for continued downloading even if your computer is turned off.Overall, this Asus router has been phenomenal! For the price, especially with the rebate, I am very happy.

This is a very well built piece of equipment - very tasteful in design - as a router it was very easy to setup but you still need some know how to do it correctly. As a repeater or bridge forget about it - i only got it to work after hours of internet "how to" videos and actually logging on to dd-wrt site for info. so it is sold as a 1 2 3 unit but far from it depending on what you purpose for this unit. Oh and the Asus like so many other routers that support repeater and access point now use DD-WRT firmware but all the literature is for asus proprietary firmware so dont look for any help there. but as a router you are safe. So all in all a good router but you'll definitely need some assistance with the other settings - unless you really know what you are doing.

ASUS (RT-N12) Wireless-N 300 Advance Home Router: Fast Ethernet, 3 in 1 switch(Router/Repeater/Access Point) and support upto 4 Guest SSID(Open source DDWRT Support)I buy stuff from Amazon all the time but rarely do I write reviews. First the shipping speed was awesome I ordered yesterday afternoon and received this afternoon, you can't get any better than that. The reason I purchased this specific router is that one of the other reviews mentioned basically the exact use that I needed it for and that is extending the wifi signal to an 'out' building/apartment which is at least 100ft away from the house with the internet/router.All that was required was switching the hardware switch to the right setting plugging into the laptop for the initial configuration and searching for the existing network. It found it immediately, I input the security key and it was all set.I then disconnected the laptop and hooked it up to the PS3 which was the intended recipient and it works just as good as if it were next to the router in the house. This was amazingly simple and works a whole lot better. Without this we could get one maybe two bars and could not get an IP from the original router but again using this we had a full signal.I am tempted to buy another just because it is so cool. And I have used many other routers including the Linksys E-2000 with tomato firmware and the WNDR-3700 from Netgear.

Update: Wife tried to print without the printer on and now nothing works. I have tried to re-setup everything and the print server will not work. As of right now, it is just another wireless router.I set this router up in less than 5 minutes. I was able to change all of the passwords and had no problems with the router itself using the supplied firmware.I used the included cd to add a non-supported hp laser printer. The printer would show up when I looked at the router, but I could not print to it. So I clicked on the printer and clicked on the port tab. I added another tcp/ip port and typed in 192.168.1.1 for the address and then added RT-n13u as the name. After windows searched and could not find the device, I told it to use a generic card. I then selected that as the printer port and also turned off print spooling. Tried a test page and it worked. I hope this helds other people. The range is not the best. I get better reception next door than this router upstairs, but for 35.00 for a router and print server it is a steal.

The first thing I want to say is Amazon is great for its prompt shipping and return policy. Now as far as this router is concerned it is worthless. I tried for 3 full days to set a pair of these routers up as an AP and as a REPEATER with no success. I followed the simple instructions and was able to set up the AP router or so I thought. None of the laptops or desktops could connect to it even though they could see it with 5 bars. The repeater was the real nightmare with following the "easy instructions" it would never connect to the other router and then when we tried to reset it and start over it would not reset. Held the button in for a minute and all it did was flash the power indicator. We let it do that for 15 minutes thinking it was going to stop, but it never did. I have sent these items back to Amazon for a full refund and will continue my search for a good ap and repeater. I will put back the old Apple G routers that were easy to set up taking only about 5 minutes. Might have to with modified Apple routers to connect to the out side antenna. DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER SAVE YOUR SELF THE EXPENSE OF A BOTTLE OF ASPRAN AND WASTED TIME.

This is a decent low end router. I bought two of them refurbished, and my only complaint has to do with the stock firmware that comes on them. The routers are rated at 300mbps on Wireless-N. The problem is that the stock firmware does not seem to allow this, as it is locked at 20mhz (150mbps)using the factory setup. A switch to the DD-WRT firmware, and all of a sudden I can get 300mbps as advertised by simply setting the Wireless settings to 40mhz. I have seen a little goofiness in the routers if the connections sit idle for a long period of time, but that might simply be a setting in the custom firmware. Overall, I give the router 4 stars, because the performance is really great, as long as you replace the stock firmware.

Ok. I'll be honest.I've only had this router for 4 hours... but I've spent 4 hours trying to get it to work, and have ONLY JUST managed to connect to the internet.I'm not saying that it's a bad router. I've not used it enough to say.My eyebrows were first raised when during the setup process, I noticed more than a few grammatical and plain poor language errors, but I really did hope that it wasn't a sign of things to come. Please /please/ save yourself the trouble I went through, and make sure you download the latest non-beta firmware at [...]The router kept telling me that it was connected to the Internet, but I kept getting timeouts while pages were trying to load... my emails wouldn't download, Skype wouldn't connect ... etc, but according to the router, the internet connection was a-ok.Anyway, after downloading and applying firmware 1.0.2.3, rebooting my Cable modem, rebooting my laptop, and rebooting the router (are you seeing a trend here?!), AND then re-establishing the Internet connection, I'm online. Now to see if the external hard drives are any easier to connect to.

I was looking for a way to connect all of my home theater components to my network. I had already tried powerline network adapters, but they died and were too slow anyway. Running physical cable isn't practical due to the location of my network and living on a slab. Then I stumbled onto this router, which I used as a repeater to connect to my wireless network. Setup was a snap. Within minutes I had all of my components plugged into the router and connected to the network. My DirecTV receiver now downloads movies faster than it ever did via the powerline adapter, and as a bonus, the router has boosted my wi-fi signal so that I now get full bars in the living room and outside the house. It works so well I just ordered another one for upstairs.

Hello this is Matt Robison not Cliff ...anyways like I said this is a great router ! it was super easy to connect and install, I think it took less then 5 minutes. I was looking for a router to replace my dinky G-router that couldn't sustain signal beyond 20 ft...so I found the ASUS Wireless-N and I would never go back. I've had it for two weeks now and its been rock solid! I did a range test and I've got signal from nearly 75-100ft from my house, very impressive for the price!

I unboxed it, flipped the switch to repeater mode, plugged in the power cable, plugged my MacBook into a LAN port, opened my web browser, accessed the web interface at 192.168.1.1 and used the login and password I guessed (admin / admin), clicked on "AP Survey" (or somethng like that), performed a scan for wireless networks nearby, found the unlocked DLink network I was looking for, clicked connect, and that was it. It is now functioning as a repeater extending my currently unlocked wireless BG network to a building across my farm. One note... when I clicked Connect the Please Wait notification popped up and stayed there until I realized that the device was now repeating the DLink network already. So don't just sit there waiting for the page to refresh. I was lucky and smart enough to have my Android phone nearby with wifi analyzer (free) installed. That third device really helped solve the Please Wait mystery.

This router is extraordinarily powerful in terms of memory and processing power. Its range is pretty decent even without boosting the TX power.I have installed DD-WRT on this router, and as ASUS claims, it seems to be fully compatible. Once you remove the stock firmware and install DD-WRT, it's really a wonderful machine. The gigabit and USB ports are a very nice.I have, however, had issue connecting it to my iOS devices (iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPod Touch 4G). They simply cannot connect to this router--at least, in N-mode. I haven't tried it in mixed or B/G mode, as I have a separate router for that. Also, a Western Digital My Book USB hard drive connected to it won't sleep, or spin down. This is most likely DD-WRT's fault. All in all, it's a wonderful machine, and I have a feeling my iOS issues will be solved by a tweak of the settings. I'll update the review once I've fixed it, if I remember.

The product came in ahead of schedule so the company that delivered was great. The unit worked fine for about 24 hours. Then it wouldn't work. (I have other routers from this company -- NT10+, NT13U and the NT56U -- and they all work perfectly.) I found out from a local Electronics Store that they also had a lot of returns on THIS particular model. I would avoid until checking with local electroncs stores to monitor the return rates.Otherwise, the other units from this company are excellent products, seems to get good signals. These others (as well as the NT12, except the NT56U) operate as an Access Point, Repeater, and Internet connection through a modem or DSL. This is what I liked about it, you can mix and match the modes. Use as a repeater, link to another as an access point, or use as another repeater... No other company offered such versatility! The set up is a snap. The reception is great, the speeds are good (as good as and better than advertised even with low signals). And I use them interchangeably as routers, Access Points, Print servers, and Repeaters. The only other issue I have found was that the printers are supported well, but the scanners supported are limited.Overall, I am pleased with the OTHER Asus products, but this one apparently has a bad manufacutring timeframe. So, I gave them a low score for this product (N12) only because they had a slug of bad units (it can happen). But do not carry that low score to the other models. They are excellent and I have 2 N10+, 1 N13U and 1 N56U and am having NO problems. I am sure that they will work this issue out. I will wait and will probably purchase an N12 for the signal strength when they get the product bug out.

I've bought several routers over the years (most recently another ASUS router which I was very happy with) and after reading the reviews on Amazon decided to try this one. I liked the fact that it was ASUS (since my other router has run for a year without requiring reboots or me talking nicely to it), the fact that I can attach an external USB hard drive to it so I can set up a backup for my computer, and the gigabit ethernet. I'm using it as the router on my network, and then have connected it to a network switch to feed 16 ethernet lines to the rest of the house.Setup took me all of 10 minutes...the enclosed software loaded onto my computer and boom, the wireless was set up. I'm using my other ASUS router as an access point to extend the network, and immediately the two routers made nice with each other (hard wired, not repeater mode) and blanketed the house in high-speed wifi bliss.Seems like many of the reviews complain about the firmware .... but I checked the firmware on the router login page and it shipped with the LATEST VERSION.... so no issues there.Only "complaint" I have is that like other reviewers I've noticed this router runs warm. I wonder if that will lessen its lifespan or cause any other problems? So far so good, very happy. If that changes, I WILL UPDATE THIS REVIEW, PROMISE!

I was blown away with its tech specs and feature list. I ignored some bad reviews thinking that these people probably didnt know what they were doing. My problems started right out of the box when the router would not hold onto my WAN IP. The modem I hooked it up to worked fine with my PC. After a couple hours of frustration I read somewhere that in this scenario the modem & router has to be power cycled for 10 whole mins and turned back on in a particular sequence - modem first. That done, I jotted troubleshooting instructions on a post-it stuck near the router for my wife. I went on to explore other features. As always I got the latest firmware and software from ASUS and installed it; After 10 or so power cycles the router just wouldn't stay online. I had to revert to FW 1.0.1.6 just to keep it running. Next I connected a portable drive to the USB hoping to use the router as a file server. However, it would loose WAN & Wireless signal more frequently with the drive connected. The "Download Master" & torrent feature is a piece of doodoo. The torrent client on the router would not connect to most trackers (especially private) and give dismal through-puts if it even managed to keep running longer than 15 mins. The client utility does not give any info about whats happening to the torrents on the router. It does however give an ugly senseless message when the torrent client on the router crashes. These problems could be because of the portable drive and its power requirements destabilizing the routers functioning. But I get similar problems with USB sticks although not as much.I keep trying to upgrade every month, thinking I must've goofed up somewhere, giving ASUS the benefit of doubt eachtime. I read people cursing at ASUS and their firmware issues. At one time I saw a firmware release taken off their website without any notice. Needless to say that didnt work either. The same version number returned a couple of months later with a completely different date code & revision history. In conclusion this device has a lot of potential if only ASUS gets their act straight. It is in no way a trusty workhorse to replace your existing router. Tread carefully or you might see your weekends going down the drain.

The ASUS software that comes with this thing isn't the best. I tried running the ASUS software, but it wasn't stable and it didn't have all the features I needed. On the other hand; if you load the DD-WRT open source software on this thing, it absolutely rocks. I've been using it as a media center bridge to connect my non-Wi-Fi DirecTV DVR and my Samsung Blu-Ray player with NetFlix to my home network. I don't have to reboot it. It always works. It streams content reliably from the DVR to my iPad and NetFlix from the internet to my Blu-Ray player is never choppy. I even have a VoIP phone plugged into behind it, and I've never noticed any quality issues from it either. If you're willing to spend 25 minutes loading the DD-WRT software on this thing, you won't be disappointed. If it shipped with the DD-WRT software, I'd give it five stars..

I have been looking for a router with decent range, speed, support for USB based external NTFS drives and last but not the least, good QoS support for VoIP phones. Another important thing that perhaps everyone wants but forgets to mention is reliability. I expect it to keep on working once it has been setup.I have had this router for just couple of days so far and cannot comment on reliability yet, but other requirements have been met quite well. The specs were something to die for - 480MHz (capable of 533MHz) processor, 128MB RAM, 32MB ROM and runs Linux with support for bittorrent and FTP right in the firmware. Even the firmware source code is GPLed and anyone with a bit of knowledge in this area can improve it. In fact, DD-WRT (an open source Linux based firmware) is already available and works quite well with this router. With DD-WRT installed on this router, it becomes quite a powerful computer that can serve as a web server as well as a NAS once you connect an external hard drive to the USB port. QoS and Port Forwarding have been implemented quite well in DD-WRT and is the main reason why I had to install DD-WRT within few hours of receiving the router.[...]I would have given the router a 4.5 rating if I could as the firmware it came with had a few bugs. I could never get port forwarding to work and also QoS setup in the original firmware is limited. Here are some pros -1. Gigabit ethernet, excellent processor and so the performance. Asus claims 300,000 concurrent sessions, which should be enough to handle even commercial hotspots with hundred users.2. It has 2 USB ports that support various devices. One could connect a USB printer and a cheap external hard drive at the same time. The printer would work as a network printer (available to all computers in the network) and the USB hard drive will be available as Network Attached Storage to everyone without paying hundreds for one such device.3. DD-WRT availability. They are constantly improving and adding features. QoS (Quality of Service) is one such feature that is needed in any household that has a VoIP phone and lot of online activity in the background like uploading videos to youtube, p2p, online gaming etc. With proper QoS setup phone service or online gaming shouldn't be affected even with other large scale online activity.4. The original firmware is image based and looks quite nice. I found it very intuitive.Cons -1. Should have been dual band (separate bands for G and N traffic), the chipset supports it. I am running in mixed mode as several of my devices (iPhone, Fuze, Wii) support only G mode and in mixed G/N mode, N components operate predominantly at G speed.2. The original firmware is buggy and I couldn't get port forwarding to work reliably after several tries. QoS, the main reason behind me upgrading from a D-Link, is not implemented as well as I expected. DD-WRT fixes both issues but first-time owners may not be savvy enough to reload a 3rd-party firmware on their brand new router. All in all, it's an excellent purchase for the capability and price, especially when you consider Cisco charges more (sometimes twice) for routers with slower processors and much less RAM and flash memory.Update: Updated the links since Amazon yanked them. Also would like to add that the reliability is quite good so far with DD-WRT. Has been running for 3 days straight and no issues/slowdown etc.

When downloading the firmware updater onto your computer...USE THE ASUS CD..I made the mistake of just trying to download it off the ASUS website and ended up only with a chinese version. Although there is no forum directly linked to this device on dd-wrt, the standard ASUS practices of flashing new firmware and resets still apply. I actually used this router as a client bridge to link my xbox to my router because of wireless interference from my surround sound (thanks Sony). My unconventional use obviously shows the value of this router for its price...I'll never buy a router that costs more! Definitely 5 stars.

I was so excited to get this little replacement for an old DLink. Initially I was extremely happy, but then it began dropping connection. If you're on Win7 you'll see the exclamation icon of fury over your wireless connection icon. It seems to be a saturation issue. It happens when I try transferring files over my local network, when I try streaming Netflix. I wondered if it was a firmware issue so I flashed - same thing. I flashed with normally rock-solid tomato ... same thing.Tech support told me it was a "known issue" but did not do anything to resolve it. That was also disappointing. This piece of equipment is a tremendous disappointment and I do not believe that I will ever buy anything ASUS again. Definite buyer's remorse.
