This is a rock-solid item. As soon as I got it, I flashed it with DD-WRT and converted it to a wireless access point. It's been working non-stop in my home without needing a reboot since then, which was at least three weeks ago. We have multiple wireless devices, including smart phones, tablets and laptops, and everything connects flawlessly every time. The wireless throughput is great. The speed is doubled that of my old wireless-G access point that this item replaced.If you are an power-user, get this and flash it with DD-WRT immediately. You won't be disappointed.

I bought the RT-N16 thinking that I would change the firmware over to Tomato or DD-WRT, but after spending a little time with the default firmware I discovered that I was pleasantly surprised with Asus' firmware. The router came shipped with a very old version of their own firmware, so the first thing you should do is upgrade it to a new version [...].I was able to use this router to manage my ADSL service by bridging an Actiontec GT701D modem, which finally allowed me to access my router ports outside of my network. The setup was a bit of a pain to figure out, but that was mostly the Actiontec's fault for being almost too advanced for a modem.Now that I finally have everything working the way I want it, I don't want to risk messing things up by tossing some custom firmware on the Asus. For now it fits the bill and seems to be performing pretty well.

This review only covers the setup and use of the Repeater (Wireless Bridge) mode.A nice little unit for the price. As others have already mentioned in their reviews, setup for me wasn't as smooth as I would have liked. I have never set up a repeater (wireless bridge) before, maybe other brands have similar issues. I am using this in the repeater mode to provide an internet connection for my Xbox 360 and Panasonic Viera 50GT25. My existing router is a Linksys E3000 and I had the same issue as others when trying to configure the RT-N12.I skipped the quick web based setup and installed the software right away and was able to access the configuration page of the RT-N12 but never got it to connect. At first I thought I needed the hex passkey when the pass phrase didn't work (pass phrase is what the units needs). I could not find this info in the Linksys config and tried to use a conversion tool I found online which didn't work either. I then tried to use the quick web based setup, no go. Since I had the config open, I updated the firmware before giving up for the evening. The next day I started round two but this time I was only prompted to enter the login and password for the Linksys router. This never changed, and still hasn't even after I successfully set up the RT-N12. I have no idea why I could login in to the RT-N12 one day and not the next, maybe because I updated the firmware??? Eventually I was able to get it working (see below).I haven't used it extensively but I never had any drops or lag during the 4+ hours I played Call of Duty: Black Ops or when we watched an HD movie through the Panasonic VieraCast (amazon.com instant video). I will update the review should this change.My recommendation on how to set the RT-N12 up as a wireless bridge:Follow the instructions for Access Point mode then power the unit off, flip the switch to Repeater mode and go! I would recommend testing it out since you'd have the "client" plugged in to it anyway.UPDATE 3/22/11: Had my Linksys E3000 fail last week and was quickly able to grab the ASUS RT-N12 and swap it out to get the network back up and running. Flipped the switch to router mode and maybe changed a setting or two. The major change was adding the port forwarding settings I had from the E3000. Whole process took less than 10 minutes and I am getting a better signal with the RT-N12 than the E3000 from the same location. Fortunately the E3000 is under warranty at 11 months old so I can get it replaced, but I'd much rather get a refund (I paid $140) and buy another RT-N12 instead (this won't happen). I don't care if it's 4 months or 2 years, routers should last longer.

This router works very well once I updated the firmware for use with VPN HideMyAss. Update was easy. Although I was scared at first because all instructions I found online warns about bricking the router if not done correctly. I went ahead and updated anyway and within a few minutes, a new firmware was installed and I could enter VPN information on it.This router is now connected to my main Internet router and all devices connected to this are tunneled through VPN. I can watch HuluPlus on my Vizio TV and my Sony Internet-ready DVD player in Europe. I also have my iPhone and iPad connected to this router so I can listen to Pandora.

Stock firmware isn't too bad if all you need is the basics... but if you put on DD-WRT or Tomato this router becomes a powerhouse. I have been using this router for around 2 years with TomatoUSB and run a printer and NAS off the device without a hiccup. I can't ask for anything more out of this, best router purchase I have made to date.

This is an awesome router. I have been using it for 3 months now and I am impressed by how stable it is. Also the setup is easy and the best thing about this little Router is that it erases the setup difficulties about IP conflicts and all that. This Router takes care of that by searching an IP number that doesn't conflict with your computer, so if you have ATT you dont have to configure anything on BRIDGE MODE, you just let the Router set things up automatically. I love it.

I'm a moderate user and my previous router was Linksys WRT54G2 v1, which offer a reliable connection to all my wired and wireless devices (4 iphones, iPad 2, 3 PC, 1 Macbook, wireless Printer, wired streaming media player, wired Samsung internet TV). I didn't have any connection problem or signal loss in this router, but my only problems were I had a weak signal at the end on one room and I needed to connect a USB printer to the wireless network. This router seems to offer the best options as it has a usb print server and offer a superior speed and wider range. and the price was a steal as it cost me $35 after the rebate. I will summerize pros and cons here:Pros:Easy setupUSB print server work perfectly for PC (Windows Only!!)offer many optionscan install open source firmware (dd-wrt)ConsNo compatible software for mac (printer didn't work) :(signal strength just like the previous router ( still have same weak signal at the end of room)signal loss and disconnect frequentlyslower internet speed when 2 devices work at the same time (watching a youtube video on the iPad stop when browsing a webpage on the laptop, which isn't a problem with the previous router)ConclusionU get what you pay for, Linksys is a lot more superior to other brands and offer seamless and smoother connection. But the price of this router is less than buying a print server. So I decided to make it work as a repeater in the other room and print server for the USB printer.My advice its not a good option as a stand alone router for multiple users working at the same time.I will try to install dd-wrt firmware and check it offer a better connection quality.

Not as seamless to configure as the Apple world to which I am mostly accustomed. I am not a very technical person... and, had to closely read the manual to figure out how to configure. No 'plug and play' - took some consideration.

Pros:Great even with stock firmware, came with 2.0.31 which isn't even on the site, using it in AP mode.Cons:I bought an antenna with it and it turns out it is non-removable.Can't turn off WPS in AP mode but it seems off anyway.

Right after set up, wired connection was fine but wireless was effectively dead. The signal appeared, and PCs connected to it, but the speed was as slow as a telephone modem from the mid nineties or worse. Youtube videos would not stream at all. Tried restarting the modem and router, with no change. I guess I could have called customer support, or upgraded the firmware, but I dont have the time or inclination to spend time on a device that doesn't work out of the box. Sent back to Amazon.

For non-techies just looking for a simple, yet powerful router (on a budget,) you can't go wrong with the Asus RT-N12/B. It's super easy to setup as a router or repeater (has a switch on the back to change modes.) Connect it to your PC via ethernet and the setup is mostly point and click.For the techies looking for bang for a bang-for-your-buck router that supports DD-WRT, this is it! This Asus RT-N12 (revision B) replaced my old D-Link DIR-625. I originally bought a DIR-615, but after receiving it and flashing DD-WRT, I found out that it was not able to have OpenVPN installed (something about too small of a flash RAM - 4MB.) However, even though this RT-N12/B also had a small flash RAM (same 4MB,) there was a small version of OpenVPN created for it. I immediately, and easily, flashed the DD-WRT firmware file (it was much easier than flashing the DIR-615) and then, just as easily, flashed the small OpenVPN file, and I was in business. Presently, it's working overtime without a hiccup; It runs my wireless network (w/ WPA2 personal encryption and, because you can have up to 4 SSID's (VLAN's,) it's also running a VLAN with WEP (so my old Mac G4 w/ OS9 can connect.) Finally, it's handling VPN (via Astrill) so that I can either have all connected devices tunneled or, how I have it, tunnel just a specific device (in my case, my Roku.)I plan on purchasing another one to use as a repeater.

I used this router with the intent of sticking it to the man (AT&T) and using it as my main router but alas its quite difficult (if at all possible) to get this to work at home while also using their lame modem/router (3801HGV).So I know use it as work router and it comes in handy when I need quick connectivity fixes. It served its purpose as a repeater for the past 2 months and will continue to use it when the need arises. Great product for a great firmware.

Use as a repeater, in conjunction with Airlink Router. Use it for MagicJack Plus phone. All went well. Just switch the button in the back of the unit to "Repeater" instead of the default "Router" switch position. Press the button on my Airlink router for Bluetooth device finder and then press the reset button on the ASUS button, and that is.The MagicJack Plus phone is now be place anywhere in the house. No need to be near the modem or router.Convenience, and save on long distance phone call. total cost == $44 (ASUS repeater/router) + $45 (MagicJack Plus) + $20/year (for Magicjack plus subscription per year)== around $110, now can cut the landline cord with Verizon phone company for ever. No garbage taxes and interstate line support fee, no long distance call fee, and etc. Phew!! what a freedom, and saving. For econmically minded people out there, it worth the initial setup cost, but then you will save on landline telephone bill hopefully forever. $20/year, can not beat that saving.This unit is highly recommend for anyone that want internet connection but do not want hardwire to the remote unit. Works very well, cost effective. This unit can be reverse back to router if I no longer need it as a "Repeater" unit. There are three switches in the back: "Router", "Repeater", "AP" (Access Point). Just choose the function that applied to your situation, and bingo, all done. Hope this will help some people out there with unsure of this unit functionalities.By the way, the manual with the unit is very minimal, need to access website and info on provided disc to obtain more info. don't expect much from the manual provided. Good luck!!!

I got this as a budget router. It sucked so bad haha. It dropped out all the time. I mean a few times a day. Terrible. Then I did the flash with DDWRT and now it rocks! I haven't lost connection since and that was about 5 months ago. Nice and fast with good range. Great little router. The switch to DDWRT is super simple. Doesn't take any skill; just read the instructions online.

It finally made a router that I could be satisfied with. So far no problems and it works very well with multiple devices connected to it. I couldn't ask for more except maybe to TURN THE BRIGHTNESS DOWN ON THE LEDS!!!!Besides the Brazilian carnival it projects onto my bedroom ceiling, it's flawless.

I used to only use Netgear routers, but after having to replace them after about 1 - 1 1/2 years of use, I decided to go with Asus brand. I have always trusted their computer products and this router works without flaw all the time without needing the occasional reboot that the Netgear needed from time to time. I highly recommend Asus brand to anyone if they want reliability and ease of use.

overall a very good equipment. The convenience of plugging any HDD and using is as a network drive, or a printer and have a network printed is great. The range of WiFi did not extend over my prior one, which was a disappointment since i was expecting an increase in range.

The RT-N16 router is an inexpensive router that has 2 USB ports to allow plugging in an external drive for use as a NAS. The print sharing is great. I have my Brother HL-2220 printer plugged in and allows me to print wirelessly. This router also runs DD-WRT if you don't want to use the ASUS firmware.

I now have two of these, one is used as a router and the other as an access point. Both are loaded with dd-wrt. I have put a USB drive on the access point and plan to load samba on it shortly for use as a backup device. These replaced my Buffalo routers (also running dd-wrt) that have been work horses for the past several years.

I bought this router to flash with an open source firmware based on reviews in a lot of forums. I was able to flash it without issue and got the functionality I wanted. So far its been running great and I'm very pleased with it. Hopefully that remains the case in the long run.

I use it as a repeater and it works great. I have a Sony Blueray DVD with wireless and it was constantly getting stuck and loosing connection, now I attached the DVD via Ethernet cable to this device and no more lost connections.
