this hd been working great for 6 monthsthen it just start giving me freeze ( bad sector stuff )now i dont know what to do with it since i live in middle east and cant change itmy other seagate 1 tb drive the other hand been working great for 10 monthswestern are overratedgo with maxtor or seagate or even heihachi is better than thissry for my bad english

I did some reasearch before getting the 1TB drive. The WD Caviar Black and the Green were both highly rated. So far I am happy with them, but I sadi the same thing about the 250GB Maxtor One Touch. Bought several of those for myself, and recommended them to my computer side job customers. If only I had know then only beat the 18 month warranty by a few months.What I have read tells me these 1TB Caviar Black will work as advertised. The speed, drive size and price were right.

This is a great hard drive, with good speeds, size, noise and heat. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some great storage. I actually used it to replace the system drive in my Mac G5, and it's great!However I returned the drive shipped to me by Amazon because of the poor packaging, and spent an extra $20 to buy it a BestBuy so it would be in retail packaging. The extra money was worth it to me to ensure that it wasn't beat up in shipping. Amazon needs to change their shipping habits of sensitive items like hard drives and camera lenses to name a few.**Buy this OEM Bulk hard drive from Amazon with caution!!**Good luck!BZ

Thank you for such prompt service. I do understand that hard drives give up now and then. Was able to save all my company's data that was on my computer before any crash but I did have to purchase a new one so I was up and running in no time. Even my old drive was under warranty and was replaced as a spare for the network. I have come to rely on Amazon for so many things to keep my business running and to keep me entertained. Thank you very much

I bought two of these from Amazon and they have worked perfectly for the past 3 months. They are very fast and quiet. Cheaper than buying raptors when performance is important. I'm not sure why the other reviewer received his packaged poorly but mine were each packaged in a small box, inside an anti-static bag, sandwiched between two very thick pieces of foam. Mine were shipped two day with Prime if that makes a difference. All my drives are WD and I have never had any DOA, failures or issues.

This is a very good product for the money. The question is - do you need this much space? I always recommend getting two small disks instead of one gigantic one just in case it crashes. Two of these drives would go nicely with a new PC build.

Received hard drive in a very timely matter. The packaging was horrible ... only 2 airbags, one top of the drive the other on the side of the drive. Bottom of the drive was touching the box and the drive was sliding all over banging the 3 unprotected sides. WD specifies if approved packaging is not used then it will void the warranty. I seriously doubt this is approved packaging. I did not even try to use the drive, I immediately RMA'ed it back to amazon. Drives shipped in this manor do not last long. I usually buy from the egg place but according to their reviews they also ship with poor packaging and have constant DOA drives. I posted a "customer" image of what the packaging looked like.

The Western drives are good including the "Green" drives. But the Caviar Black rules them all and are the fastest drives I have ever used. I have set these up in raids and they work very well in HD video editing. I tested them with Black Magic's test and they are plenty fast for that need. I was delivered one that was damaged in shipment probably because it was outside the packing. It was returned and I received another which works perfectly.

I have 8 of these drives currently. They run quiet, fast, and cool. They come with an enterprise level warranty of 5 years. I have 4 working in a RAID 5 array it it works perfectly. Best cost per GB as well. I would only by WDC Bulk drives from Amazon. Stay away from Segate. Hitatchi drives run fire hot and have actually burned my fingers when touching them.

product works great in spite of the horribly bad, actually dumb packing job by the guys at Amazon. a piece of bubble wrap loose in the box and the HDrive. Even the box has "handle carefully" all over it. Amazon just slap and seals the box, away it goes. Note the other reviews said this problem had been solved. "NOT" . I sent 2 back andthe 3rd was a bubble wrap sheet and a inflate bag. Amazon needs to train packers

Poor Packing only one bubble wrap in a small box but arrived ok. This is a bare bones drive with no instructions. You need to install into computer, then confirm it shows up in the bios, and in the device manager under disk drives. Then go to computer management and then select disks. You must initialize by right clicking and then assign a drive letter and format (create a simple volume -- this is a right click also while on the drive in the list) the format takes a long time on a large drive (about 3 hours) I did not try the quick format as I was not in a hurry. Works great.

When I first received it I installed it in an Other World Computing Mercury Elite Al Pro case(my 3rd) and ran a disk utility(continually performed read/write actions on entire drive) for 2.5 days with out any errors. Then I converted(rip is such an ugly word) about 200 DVDs from my library onto the drive which fills it up. Having owned this drive for almost 4 weeks it is too soon to comment about it's long term reliability.I opted to try an 'enterprise' quality hard drive over the less expensive models hoping that it perform reliably for at least 3 years. My past experience with low cost hard drives(and external enclosures) from most manufacturers is they fail far to often(usually between 1.5 and 2.5 years). When you consider the time and effort it takes to recover(even if the contents are backed up), cheap equipment is no bargain.

Great drive, but be sure to put it through its paces early to find out if it needs to be replaced. Not only can the drive be bad, but there could have been an issue during the shipping and handling from Amazon. Do a full format, run the WD diagnostic tools and check the S.M.A.R.T. readings on the drive.If it isn't fast and quiet, there may be a problem. If you're hearing odd clicks from it, that's not a good sign. If the drive turns itself off after some mild activity, it may have a heating problem or bad drive controller. The drive should not get hot enough to need to shut off under regular usage, even if your case doesn't have the best airflow.My drive shut itself off two times about a week apart and it had decent airflow. None of my other drives have ever done this. Up until it shut down, you'd think the drive was mint. WD will be happy to replace the drive for you.

I choose this product because of it's storage size and "reported" speed. However, I found later that the speed, for some reason, is lost if you install it into a RAID. To get the full speed advantage of this hard drive you should install it as a single hard drive in a PC, rather than as a second drive. It works fine, but the premium price is wasted because of this limitation (sort of like buying a Ferrari to drive to the grocery store). SATA connection is supposed to be 6 times faster than USB connection; mine is only 2 times faster. Also, there is a noticeable start up noise when I go to that drive's directories.

I bought this drive to, well, digitize my entire life. I'm not sure I will ever fill it. Drive is solid, installs easily, Windows recognizes it right off the bat. I will echo what other reviewers have said, though: this is an OEM drive, which means you get the drive in a box and that's it. If you need instructions, or drivers, or cables, or rail screws, either be prepared to obtain those things separately, or buy another drive.

I purchased 4 of these from Amazon. The manufacturer packages these with almost no padding, rattling around inside a box. Three of the four drives had burst silica gel packets inside the antistat bags, covering the drives with dust. I considered trying to clean the drives, but as pellets of gel kept falling out from under the pc boards, I decided to return them all.If they had that much impact damage during shipping, they are likely not reliable. If you buy this product, I suggest a retail store purchase.

I ordered this drive next day air cause I needed this for a friends setup (last minute request). Anyway, I received the drive late due to UPS shipping issues and honestly I was amazed the drive still works. It was shipped in a tiny box with only padding on the top the drive (so it can still move around the box). I tested the drive for a few hours and luckily everything passed.I will give the product 5 stars, but the shipping 0 stars...sorry Amazon.See pictures (from my blog):[...]

Extremely disappointed, the drive was shipped without and protection and arrived dead, it was packed loose in a oversize box.. When I opened the box I immediately wondered if it would still work..You can check my history, I am not a complainer and accept this as a total loss. Not even worth my time to send it back.I did feel that the shipper was negligent and took my time to write this review to warn other to take my loss in consideration when buying from a irresponsible sellerRegardsEric

I purchased this drive in May, and it died tonight. In one fell swoop, I've lost all of the files that I copied over to it, as well as any new documents and other files generated in the last 4 months.This is simply terrible. From now on, I'm avoiding any and all products by Western Digital, and am going Raid 1 for all future hard drive purchases.

This is my first time purchasing a Western Digital Product, and a hard drive as well. I have to say, I was a little skeptical buying this brand after hearing that they fail soon after a month or so. Well it's been over a month and it is still going strong. I use this as my main hd and my original hd as a backup. After transferring my OS onto this one, my boot time is faster, fetching files is faster and my whole computer is pretty much working faster. I definitely recommend purchasing one of these bad boys for extra hard drive space or to replace and existing hard drive. If you decide to purchase one, I highly recommend getting a cooling fan also. I ran this hd at first for only thirty minutes to see how hot it would get. Believe me it was scorching only after thirty minutes. Good thing I bought a hd cooler with it. I think many of them fail because they are not properly ventilated. Either way,highly recommend just protect your investment, get a cooling fan.

I have had a number of WD drives and liked them all. But, this one is special. It is huge, and it improved the speed of my Acer Aspire e360 desktop system.It has done nothing to call attention to itself. It just quietly does its job.What more could you ask of a disk drive?

I've had this drive for almost a month now and everything seems to be running smoothly. The Mac Pro makes installation extremely easy, since they provide the frame and the screws already pre-installed. I would recommend to anyone looking for additional storage, especially if you're doing anything with video or media graphics.

Amazon ships this with but two small bubble wrap things around the drive, allowing it to shift in box and hit the sides. The bubble wraps also apparently got hit with enough force to deflate.We'll see how long the drive holds up, if at all--I'm still deciding if I should just RMA it without even trying to install. This is the WORST packaging job they could have done for a fragile hard drive like this. A box of popcorn from Amazon gets a better packaging job. Come on people!

You want speed and free space? Here you go.Reviews/benchmarks across the net show that this is one of the fastest single drive, non-SSD solutions there is, without paying for overpriced hard drives. Sure, you can get a 300GB Velociraptor, but you'll end up paying 4x as much, and an improvement of perhaps 1.5x times more.Running HDTach, this drive gets 90-95 MB/s read and write, with a burst speed of 120MB/s. Using an AMD SB750-based system.For something more "concrete", that's 5.9 in Vista Experience, and 6.4 in Windows 7.On the downside, yes, it's on the loud side, but it's either sick speeds or extreme silence. I went for the speed route.

A suggestion about PC proection offered by some IT professionals is to have a physical clone of system HD including all softwares,settings, drivers, and updates. This WD drive is the highest quality WD, big enough, and good price. So I did it, and plan to repeat cloning once in 6 to 12 months. So in case bad things may happen to my PC, including virus and corrupted or pesty softwares that could not be removed, I just plug in my spare HD. Within 15 minutes the system should be running as a charm.

Although Amazon bundles this with raid controllers, WD does not support this drive in a RAID configuration. look for the 'RE' designation on WD drives for a raid supported drive.Other than that this is a good drive.

This hard drive is serving my purpose.This has pleanty of room and can be divided according to my needs.I moved all my storage to this drive and left the system OS to the old drive.i mean all my music videos documents will be stored in this drive now.i can share this "My documents between different Os's and dont need to worry about reformating the OS when needed.I can share this on network and it has good speed.So far no issues.

I bought this drive for my Mac Pro (Mac Pros, at least when I bought mine 3 years ago came from Apple with WD 250 GB hard drives). I have installed about 10 WD drives, upgrading this time form the WD 500GB drives, and this drive with its 32MB cache is indeed a bit faster (10-20 percent) than the 500GB. The ONLY downside at all to this drive is that is a bit louder when the heads are seeking, with the drive seek "clatter" more noticeable than the previous 500GB Western Digitals I just replaced (I needed more storage). Not bad tho--it's just that my Mac Pro is absolutely silent and I notice the least little additional sound and never really heard the 500's, the 1TB I hear now--but don't get me wrong it's not bad and there certainly is no drive "whine" when idling--these are quite drives. I guess whizzing across 1TB of data is a little more strenuous on the heads. I have bought about 20 Western Digital drives since 2000 and not one has failed on me--unlike LaCie--ick.

Realmente se siente renovada mi computadora con este nuevo disco, sumamente r?pido, y aunque en otras revisiones indican que es ruidoso, realmente se escucha un sonido leve cuando est? buscando informaci?n. Adem?s, tiene un mont?n de espacio y mucho cach?, es excelente en multitareas.Lo recomiendo, no hay que pensarlo mucho para comprarlo. Ahora estoy pensando en un WD Caviar Green como disco secundario.

Like others have reported from Amazon, this drive is great, but it appears that there are problems with their OEM. I installed this drive in my IMAC. Everything restored beautifully, and I instantly noticed how much faster it was than the stock Seagate that was installed in the computer initially with a smaller buffer.Unfortunately, I also noticed a slight "click" about every 4-5 seconds coming from the computer that was never there before. At idle, the hard drive should not be making any noise, so I contacted WD via email, and they told me to unhook the drive and see if the problem remained. Not being able to do that on the Imac, they told me to back everything up immediately and return the drive.So, great drive, not so great when it takes 1 1/2 days to install and restore when you get a bad drive. I have used Amazon for years and never had to send a faulty item back. Still a great return policy, just a pain in the you know what.

So after reading all the other reviews about the bad packaging I expected the worst packaging ever. This drive actually came in a padded box (with a lot of rubber foam) then that box was put into an Amazon.com shipping box with the air bags stuffed in there so packing was actually better than, uhm.. that egg store.Popped the drive in with cables I already had because that is what OEM is - just the drive - and it started up fine. I replaced a 2 disk Raid-0 array with this single drive and performance is pretty much the same which is awesome for a single drive.With Seagate quality totally going through the floor, I am glad to see that WD is coming back strong with good reliable performance drives.I have an Antec Solo case, which is pretty much silent, so I can hear any type of excess drive noise which this thing does not have.

I have used this harddrive for over a month now in a USB/eSATA enclosure and have had no problems with it. Harddrive partitioned easily and does just what it should.I did choose this one over Western Digital's "Green" 1TB drive, but I do not know if there would be a noticeable performance difference between the two or not.Would definitely purchase again!

I will start by advising that if you are purchasing an OEM drive, choose a vendor other than Amazon. Allow me to describe the packaging they used: drive in anti-static bag placed on bottom of box, air-filled bag-type cushioning placed loosely on top of drive. The drive was therefore totally unprotected on the bottom side, and the wear on the anti-static bag showed it. In what alternate dimension is this an acceptable means of protecting a hard drive? They're supposed to be protected from vibration. Duh!As for the drive itself, it seems to be a quality piece. It seems to have survived Amazon's shipment abuse test, though only time will tell if its lifespan was shortened any. The drive is louder than the WD 3200AAKS-75SBA0 drive that shipped with my system. That's not a major concern to me though.It's a shame I cannot assign a rating to this experience with Amazon, as that would be zero stars. The four stars are for the product only. Buy it somewhere else!

This is a sensational drive. It is FAST, and it is quiet. It came very well packaged (in spite of what some of the other reviewers have noted) so that it could not have sustained any damage during shipment. The shipping from Amazon was (as always) unbelievably fast. I used this drive to replace my old boot drive, so I put it in the computer and then installed Windows Vista 64-bit on it without any difficulties. The drive works flawlessly, and I could not be any more pleased. Buy it!!!

Always have trusted Wester Digital hard drives over the competing manufacturers. I have never yet had a single WD drive fail on me, and I have purchased dozens of them over the years. Some of the older ones are still being used daily.I primarily work in video production, and these drives handle everything I throw at it in an edit. The new "Black" designation on these drives brings higher speeds and a larger cache. What's not to love?I recently bought 4 of these to use in a RAID 5 configuration and so far there isn't a huge difference over the older drives (also WD, but fairly recent purchases themselves). Mainly I needed more storage, but I'm seeing some speed gains as well.
